Hello! It's issue 36, here to keep you entertained now that the children are back at school and the weather is starting to shift towards those autumnal vibes. For those foodies out there look out for the Festival Of Food & Drink in Thoresby this September, marking its 10th year running this year, it’s always a thrill to visit.

The eyes of the sporting world will be on Nottinghamshire this September when the historic county hosts stage four of this year’s Tour of Britain, the UK’s leading cycle race.
Over 100 riders from the world’s leading teams will tackle a route between Sherwood Forest Visitor Centre, which has never previously hosted the race, and Newark-on-Trent on 6 Sep.
Centuries in the making, the legend of Sherwood continues to grow, with the stars of cycling set to add their stories to the tales of Robin Hood and his heroic acts that played out in the woodlands he is said to have roamed.
Along the way the peloton will also pass through the National Trust’s Clumber Park, Worksop, Harworth, Retford, Southwell, Tuxford, and Collingham as part of a 170km route.
The winner of the race’s latest visit to Nottinghamshire will be crowned close to the banks of the River Trent and just a short distance from the town’s famous castle and the spectacular St Mary Magdalene's Church.
Colombian sprinter Fernando Gaviria triumphed when the race last finished in the town six years ago, winning a dramatic four-way finish involving Italian Olympic champion Elia Viviani, European champion Alexander Kristoff and five-time Tour of Britain stage winner Dylan Groenewegen.
This stage will mark the Tour’s fourth visit to Nottinghamshire in seven years. Last year’s visit to the county boosted the local economy by £4.34m thanks to an estimated 225,000 fans lining the route.
Nottinghamshire is also home to the reigning champions of the race’s National Land Art Competition: the community-inspired Spike on a Bike hedgehog creation in Keyworth was the unanimous winner of the 2022 prize.
Councillor Ben Bradley MP, Nottinghamshire County Council Leader, said: “The
Tour of Britain’s return is fantastic news, and I cannot wait to welcome the teams as well as the spectators who will come to our towns and villages in their thousands to cheer on the riders.
“The stage will once again provide us with a brilliant opportunity to showcase Nottinghamshire to a global television audience of millions and help shine a light on why it is such a great place to live, work and visit.
Councillor John Cottee, Nottinghamshire County Council’s Cabinet Member for Communities, said: “Our wonderful county is known across the globe for its sporting heritage and hosting the race for a fourth time in seven years is recognition that we have what it takes to successfully stage major sporting events.”

the world’s best riders for our last stage in Nottinghamshire in 2022, it makes perfect sense to return there this year! I reckon we’re going to be treated to another thrilling day of world-class, free-to-watch, sporting action, set to a backdrop of some of the most spectacular scenery Great Britain has to offer.
The Tour of Britain 2023 will begin in Greater Manchester on 3 Sep and culminate eight stages later in South Wales (10 Sep). Along the way the riders will race through Wrexham, East Riding of Yorkshire, Suffolk and Essex, creating an unforgettable sporting spectacle that is free for all to watch.

Journey from first sketches to award-winning books in John Burningham’s Bedtime Stories showing at The Harley Foundation, North Nottinghamshire, from 7 October 2023 until 7 January 2024.
From featherless geese to flying cars, this Christmas exhibition promises to transport visitors into the magical world of Burningham's imagination. John Burningham’s stories have captivated generations of readers. So whether visitors are reconnecting with childhood favourites – or discovering Burningham’s work for the first time, they are sure to enjoy this exhibition.
Original sketchbooks, models, and photographs will reveal John Burningham’s creative life. The nine awardwinning books in the exhibition include: Borka, The Adventures of a Goose with No Feathers, Harvey Slumfenburger’s Christmas Present, and Ian Fleming’s Chitty Chitty Bang Bang – illustrated by John Burningham.
In Burningham’s first book (pub.1963), we meet the
featherless Borka, a goose different to all the other birds because unlike her family, she needs a woolly jumper to keep her warm. Borka’s flightless adventure is a story about being different and finding belonging – even in unconventional places.
Following the success of Borka, Burningham illustrated Ian Fleming's 1964 children's book Chitty Chitty Bang Bang – creating the iconic design of Chitty, which was replicated on film four years later. The original illustration – with Chitty flying over a French vista – will be on display alongside Burningham’s original model of the car.
In the Christmas classic Harvey Slumfenburger’s Christmas Present, Burningham’s rich illustrations show Father Christmas’ convoluted journey to deliver one final undelivered present. In his epic voyage far, far away up Roly Poly Mountain, Father Christmas uses some unexpected means of transport including a plane, Jeep, motorbike, skis, and a hot air balloon.
With a career spanning 60 years, John Burningham's wild and wonderful stories pioneered a change in books for children. The 1960’s marked the start of a new creative era in picture books with artists and illustrators experimenting with new developments in colour printing and more daring themes and ideas.
“John was a true original, a picture-book pioneer and an endlessly inventive creator of stories that could be by turns hilarious and comforting, shocking and playful. He never spoke down to children, always treating them

The Air and Space Institute students graduated from the RAF Cranwell Main Auditorium, Whittle Hall in late June. The ceremony marked a momentous occasion for the exceptional students in the Civil Aviation and Military & Defence fields, shared with their friends and families.

Baroness Vere, Minister of Aviation, said: “You will be designing the future of aviation. And this is an industry that is undergoing a transformation larger than at any point in its history. It took 30 years to grow from our first commercial flight in 1919 to the world's first passenger jet in 1949. Now, that was a monumental achievement, but an achievement that we must now eclipse, because in less than
30 years, aviation, which has become wedded to fossil fuels over the last 100 years, must become carbon neutral or away.
“We're going to need your talent and your ingenuity to drive progress and your ingenuity to drive progress on things like sustainable aviation fuel, hydrogen fuel cells, more efficient production, and even fully battery electric aircraft. [All] new challenges which need a new and diverse generation of pilots, of engineers, programmers. We need everybody to help us solve these challenges. But of course, they are not just challenges, they are opportunities as well.”

Ashfield District Council is launching two new grant schemes to support local businesses.
On the weekend of 16/17 Sep 2023 it will be sixty (60) years since Avro Vulcan XM594 entered operational RAF service with the Vulcan Wing at RAF Scampton, just north of Lincoln. Some twenty (20) years later, in February 1983, XM594 was retired from service and joined the Newark Air Museum.
To mark the anniversary, the museum is hosting a two-day event, which will allow visitors to get close access to the aircraft, and
the chance to talk to former Vulcan air and ground crews who help look after the aircraft at the museum. In addition there will be free to attend talks by former Vulcan personnel, visiting display sand an outdoor Aeroboot aviation sale.
The museum will be open from 10am to 5pm.
Admission costs to the museum site are: Adults £10, Over 60s £9. and Children £5.50.

Applications are now open for the two schemes, the Enterprise development grant and the Hucknall High Street shop front improvement grant. The schemes are one of the initiatives to support local businesses being financed by the Council’s £3.2 million UK Shared Prosperity Fund, which was secured from the government in December 2022.
The Enterprise development grant is aimed at new and existing businesses, in the District’s town centres and shopping centres, that have a viable plan to grow their business that will lead to the creation of new jobs. Businesses that are eligible can apply for grants of up to £6000.
The Hucknall High Street shop front improvement grant is specifically for small businesses located on the southern end of the High Street (between the junctions of Watnall Road and Station Street/ Duke Street). This scheme will enhance the character, value, and appeal of the businesses whilst improving the appearance of that end of Hucknall High Street. Grants for eligible properties will pay for up to 80% of the project cost (up to maximum grant payment of £9600).

Tracey Annable credits Lincs & Notts Air Ambulance (LNAA) for saving her life after sustaining horrific injuries following a road traffic collision. Now she is using her second chance to teach defibrillator training to healthcare professionals in Nottinghamshire.
It was Good Friday, 2000 and Tracey and her boyfriend were travelling on the A453 towards Nottingham looking forward to a relaxing Easter weekend when her car collided head-on with a small goods lorry.
The impact left her with a fractured skull and multiple facial wounds, a collapsed lung as well as nearly every bone broken in both legs, her right arm, and numerous fingers.
But the quick actions of the Lincs & Notts Air Ambulance team, who arrived at the scene in rapid time, made all the difference. They administered the lifesaving treatment that she needed before taking her by helicopter to Nottingham’s Queen's Medical Centre.
Despite suffering two cardiac arrests, Tracey survived. She remained in hospital for four months before being allowed home.
Today, Tracey (47) is happily married and living in Sandiacre, close to the Nottinghamshire border, and has a beautiful five-year old daughter. Yet she still suffers from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder on occasions. She is eternally grateful to the crew of LNAA who treated her and said: “I should have died that day, after suffering such serious injuries and having a cardiac arrest.”
Her experience motivated her to give back to the community and as Lead Trainer for Basic Life Support at Nottingham City Care, Tracey now teaches basic
life support combined with CPR and defibrillator training to people in the health care industry. As she says: “This is my way in playing a part to ensure other lives can be saved.”

Most people who live in Retford and the surrounding area will be familiar with the work of Andy Massey, whether they realise it, or not. Andy is the artist responsible for many of the large murals in and around the town including the huge Spa Common Sheep Fair mural, which transformed the main thoroughfare from the town towards the Bus Station and Spa Common itself. The mural was commissioned by Retford Civic Society and was co-ordinated by the tireless Pam Barnsdale. Andy has also produced a mural on the gable end of a cottage on Carr Road in the town, which reflects the rich history of The Chesterfield Canal.
‘Since then, I’ve enjoyed painting a mural of Retford buildings inside Edi’z Kitchen on Carolgate, and the ‘Blossom’ mural at The Clumber Inn, Ordsall. Painting on walls is not all Banksy, but it is fun; it requires a bold approach, sometimes a head for heights, and not worrying about detail, but trying to get the overall effect.’
Andy has also worked on an important project marking the working life of Firbeck Colliery, (which closed in 1968) with a mural and associated paintings that can be seen in Langold Village Hall. He was also commissioned to produce a mural for the school there, depicting life in Victorian times. Retford Little Theatre has also benefitted from Andy’s talents, ‘they invited me to paint some of the background scenery for their productions – another form of mural, I suppose – and that’s been fun, whether it’s York Racecourse, the Australian Outback, or Cornish beach scenes. I revel in the accolade of ‘Scenic Artist’ in the programme!’
Andy’s beautiful watercolour paintings also adorn the hugely successful Retford Heritage Trail booklet, now
in its second print run and available from Retford Arts Hub, Denman Library, and Bassetlaw Museum.
Andy Massey came to painting relatively late, after a successful career in Education. He began to paint in watercolours, inspired by David Curtis and Rowland Hilder and became involved with Retford Art Society where he developed his artistic skills and broadened his knowledge and contacts. He branched out in to oils with techniques learned from Martin Kinnear in Norfolk and began to sketch from life and develop ideas with notes and photographs, painting both local views and those he found on his travels with his wife Ginny, including North Yorkshire, which feature in a new exhibition of his work at Cath Ray Gallery on Bridgegate in Retford. Visitors will be able to see the full breadth of Andy’s work and his development as an artist. Despite only painting since his retirement 15 years ago, Andy’s work and achievements are incredible: paintings, murals, stage sets, illustrations for cards and promotional materials, book illustrations (with his friend, author Peter Tully), President of Retford Art Society, the list goes on, and a conversation with Andy always turns to what he is planning to do next! There will be a chance to meet Andy and talk about his work past, present, and future, when there is a ‘Meet the Artist’ event at the gallery on Saturday 21st October (2-4pm).
The exhibition runs from Friday 29th September to Saturday the 4th of November. There will also be the chance to improve your own painting skills with an eight week course in ‘Colour Mixing’ running throughout the exhibition, taught by resident artist, Cath Ray. Animal Trail, Church Treasury and Bishop

St Mary Magdalene Church, Newark
Visitors will be able to see the church's Treasury, a crypt that sits under the High Altar and items from the Bishop White Library throughout the festival. The Bishop White Library hosts a collection of books gifted to the church by Thomas White (former Vicar of Newark) at the end of the 17th century, and includes texts from the period 1600 to 1800 in English, Latin, Greek, Hebrew and other languages.

Visit the Town Hall to admire the designs of local students who entered the John Carr 300 competition this summer. Students were challenged to redesign the upper floors of the Town Hall in honour of its architect's 300th birthday. Nottinghamshire’s best loved food and drink fair returns for its annual autumn slot at Southwell Minster this October.
Dozens of stallholders offering a wide range of delicious food and drink including pies, chocolates, jams, chutneys, pickles, sausages, gin and much much more will be in attendance for this its 30th year.
The fair will be held on 28 Oct, 10am – 4pm and there will be children’s activities in the Chapter House too!
Over 2,000 people visit the fair every year, many enjoying the free samples that a lot of the stallholders give out. So, if you like your food and drink, there’s never been a better time to visit.
Glenn Formoy, Head of Marketing and Events at Southwell Minster, said: “We are delighted to once
again be hosting the everpopular Bramley Apple Festival here at the Minster and welcoming some of the finest food and drink producers in the region.

This lecture covers surprising attempts to create some graphic unity, even in the 1860s and 1870s expansion of the London Underground and the need to create some cohesion between the different operating companies. It covers Lesley Green’s architecture, the arts and crafts movement, Frank Pick, Edward Johnston’s typeface, Charles Holding’s architecture and the Streamline Moderne/Art Deco movement, the New Works Programme, post war austerity/ design, the Victoria line, the loss of Johnston and rescue by Kono, the Jubilee Line Extension/architecture, the creation of TIL, as well as covering recent schemes, and the future works planned for the underground, including the Elizabeth Line/Northern Line extension to Battersea etc.
Trails of Discovery.
The Arts Society Dukeries has several Trails in this area. With the help of Tickhill Town Council, the Society has created a Trail of Discovery for Tickhill. It is downloadable to a mobile device and has multiple choice questions about places of interest in Tickhill.
Trailblazers times Two in Tickhill!
The Arts Society Dukeries invited children from both primary schools in Tickhill to a Launch Day at St Mary’s Church, Tickhill to trial the new Trail of Discovery for the Church. Year 6 from Estfeld Primary School visited in the morning and Year 4 from St Mary’s C of E Primary School came in the afternoon. They were the trailblazers –the first ever children to follow the Trail which leads you round the Church by asking questions about local history, architecture, stained glass etc. All the children worked really hard to find the answers and had a great time discovering new information.

Ruddington’s popular Makers Night event returns for another year on the 15 September, 4-9pm.
Ruddington's annual showcase of talented artists and designers, Makers Night, is returning this September.
Organised by the award-winning Ruddington Village Market, the event showcases more than 70 high-quality regional crafters and makers across multiple indoor and marquee venues around the village centre, bringing everything from fine art to exquisite jewellery.
The event will be taking place on Friday 15 September, between 4pm and 9pm, and will be hosted at the Framework Knitters Museum St Peter's Church, The Cottage Hotel, and Ruddington Methodist Hall, and this year extends to the village green to include a maker’s marquee, street food zone, bar and music.
Stella Dickie of the Ruddington Village community partnership, the team behind Makers Night and Ruddington Village Market, said: "Makers Night is one of our favourite events of the year, with so many talented artists, designers, makers and crafters coming along.
“The whole village comes alive, and many of Ruddington's fabulous indie shops and cafes open late, joining in with their own popup stalls. It all adds to the brilliant atmosphere in the vil-lage on the night, with visitors staying to enjoy drinks at Ruddington's bars and pubs."

Hundreds of motorcyclists from across Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire are planning to take to the streets this September for their charity ride out.
The ‘Ride to Save Lives’ annual 62 mile biking event, will take place on 3 Sep and will be raising much needed funds for the Lincs and Notts Air Ambulance (LNAA), Lincolnshire Emergency Blood Bikes Service (LEBBS) and Nottinghamshire Blood Bikes (NBB).
Roland Johns, volunteer and joint organiser of the event said: “This will be the sixth year of our charity ride-out and we hope to make it the biggest yet. Starting at Newark Showground, the circular route will make its way through some of the most glorious countryside and villages in Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire, where we will be greeted by supporters from each village we pass through. Supporters there will be holding their own events, whilst cheering and waving to the riders along the way – creating a real buzz of excitement.”
“We all know that bikers and their families recognise the important role the LNAA plays for many different communities. The enhanced level of pre-hospital critical care delivered to patients at the scene, gives people with the most severe injuries and medical conditions the very best chance of survival when minutes matter. And with the crews on call 24 hours of the day, 365 days of the year, the highly skilled doctors, paramedics and pilots are there to help people across Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire, involved in life-threatening incidents every single day.
Together with rising costs, especially in the cost of fuel, the amount needed to keep this life-saving charity operational for this year is now set to top £10 million with each mission costing on average £4,000.”
The Emergency Blood Bikes Service (LEBBS and NBB) are run solely by volunteers and like the LNAA rely solely on public donations. They provide an out-of-hours courier service transporting essential medical items such as blood, pathology & microbiology specimens, medical notes, pharmaceutical products and donor breast milk between hospitals and healthcare facilities. This service is offered completely free of charge. They also take life saving blood and plasma to the LNAA every evening of the year.
Roland continued: “Whatever make and model of bike you ride, it is amazing to see so many bikers from all communities coming together for a fantastic event. It truly is a wonderful sight”
Erica Ley, Senior Helicopter Emergency Services (HEMS) Paramedic at Lincs & Notts Air Ambulance, added: “We have helped so many bikers, and with that, they often recognise the importance of our service. Whilst we hope that they never have to see the inside of our helicopter, we want to be there for them if they do need us.”
“As a Charity, we rely on the support from the public to do this, and our annual Ride to Save Lives is just one of the ways in which bikers can help to raise vital awareness and funds to keep our helicopter in the sky.”

Angela has been dealing with extreme anxiety and depression and creating art helps her through each day. She said: 'To start with, it was so hard just to sit at a table let alone paint, but little by little it helped me through the hard days, that is why I called my exhibition "Simple Things", they are the important things that make life worth living and special.'

There is a sensational line up of celebrity guests appearing in its 500-seat Cookery Theatre on 16 & 17 Sep, including renowned Saturday Kitchen host Matt Tebbutt, Bake Off The Professionals judge Cherish Finden, Bake Off finalists Janusz Domagala and Sandro Farmhouse, and ‘Dirty Vegan’ Matt Pritchard, amongst many others. As you stroll around a wonderful wetland site such as Idle Valley Nature Reserve on the edge of Retford, it might be hard to contemplate just what a perilous state our wetland habitats are in.
Across the UK we have lost a shocking 90% of wetlands over the past century and rising temperatures, combined with potential future loss of coastal habitats, mean that inland wetlands are more important for wildlife than ever before.
Since the formation of Nottinghamshire Wildlife Trust in 1963, the protection of wild green spaces has been central to our work and whilst we also care for fine ancient woodlands including Treswell, Eaton and Gamston Wood Nature Reserves east of Retford; beautiful meadows and valuable heaths - most of the land in our care is areas of restored gravel pits.
Here in Nottinghamshire, we are blessed with a wonderful network of restored former sand and gravel quarries throughout the Trent Valley. These include our four largest wetlands – Idle Valley, Attenborough – south of Nottingham, Besthorpe – west of Newark and the subject of the spotlight focus in the last issue of MADE - and Skylarks at Holme Pierrepont – just a stone’s throw from Nottingham.
Together, these four sites cover some 1700 acres and represent over 50% of the land in our care – a somewhat surprising figure given that we look after over 40 separate sites across the county. They are home to some of our county’s most iconic and
threatened wildlife from bitterns to otters, marsh harriers and turtle doves. Whilst managing sites on the scale of these jewels offers the potential for ambitious habitat restoration, their sheer size presents real challenges. Alongside the difficulties of maintaining water levels, the single biggest challenge, shared with all wetland managers, is halting the inexorable establishment of trees and scrub in areas of reedbed and wet grassland. If left unchecked on wetland sites, scrub encroachment leads to loss of feeding and nesting areas for wetland birds such as lapwing, redshank and snipe –and ultimately results in fragile wetland areas drying out.
As we mark our 60th year we are very much focussed on looking forward rather than back. We are of course reflecting on our past successes and the amazing legacy that our forebears and supporters across the decades have created, especially in terms of our nature reserves - but our energies and efforts are fixed on ensuring that we are well placed and well resourced to rise to the challenges of the next 60 years. Part of this requires us to be open and honest and willing to ask for help - and we certainly need help to ensure we can keep these flagship wetland sites in tip top condition.
These wonderful wetland sites have long provided havens for both wildlife and people, but we need support to ensure that they continue to act as refuges for wintering wildfowl such as tufted duck and summer visitors like sand martins. Through careful management, harvest mice will be given the opportunity to nest in reedbeds and oystercatchers provided opportunities to feed on the sites’ shores come spring.
Over the past few weeks, we have been seeking to raise at least £45,000 to enable us to plan ahead for our autumn and winter work season confident that we have the funding to crack on with vital management work. Across the four sites donations could help support sensitive clearance of shrubs and trees from islands and water edges so oystercatchers can nest; large-scale restoration of wetland habitat for birds like lapwing and redshank and restoration of reedbeds for species including harvest mice and the booming bittern.
For over 60 years we have been able to nurture nature’s recovery on a grand scale. Caring for such large areas of wetland wildlife presents real opportunities – but there is no escaping that it presents real challenges too and that is why we launched our Wetlands for Wildlife Appeal.
As ever, our members, donors and partners have been generous in their support - pushing us towards our target, but with nature in crisis it would be reassuring to know that we have more funds available than we need for our immediate requirementsespecially with costs rising across the board.
As summer segues into autumn, the mix of species frequenting our wonderful wetland reserves will morph with the seasons. As the last of the swifts, swallows and turtle doves depart, the ducks, geese, swans and winter thrushes that choose to spend the winter on our wetlands will steadily arrive. Amidst this annual changing of the guard we can also look forward to seeing other birds such as whinchats, warblers and wheatears as they pass through in search of pastures new.
Against this ever-changing backdrop, marginal wetland habitats, wet grassland and reedbed are all naturally trying to evolve into various stages of scrub and woodland. This means we must sensitively and regularly intervene to maintain the vital mix of habitat that make our wetlands so valuable for wildlife and such fascinating and rewarding places to connect with nature.
Support for our wetland work can help ensure that our Longhorn & Lincoln Red cattle can continue to eat and trample saplings alongside the beavers that are already doing such a fine job controlling scrub at Idle Valley Nature Reserve. It can also ensure that our volunteers have the tools they need or enable us to engage specialist contractors to help clear large areas of scrub.
As we face up to the combined climate and ecological emergencies, these four nature reserves are the physical embodiment of the Trust’s commitment to nature recovery. With public support we can continue to improve habitats year-on-year to make the reserves even better places to see and experience nature on your doorstep.

Lauren Martin is a theatrical milliner and university lecturer, born in Melbourne, Australia, where she trained as a costume maker. She relocated to the UK in 2006, setting up home in Nottinghamshire in 2013 were she now lives with her partner, five-year-old-son, and as we go to print, a new baby due any day! Made caught up with her to understand the wonderful world of hats…
Lauren first trained as a costume maker at Swinburne University and studied millinery at Melbourne School of Fashion, leading to a number of roles that included an eighteen-month stint at the Australian Ballet and three consecutive seasons working on Melbourne Cup headwear at the Essential Hat in Prahran.
Fast forward a few years and she’d embraced a new chapter with a relocation to the UK in 2006, securing a coveted role in the workroom of Philip Treacy until 2013, which included working on a number of high-profile events such as the Royal Wedding. She also worked as a freelancer for London based milliner Jane Taylor.
Whilst initially Lauren spent time on occasion wear, she discovered an interest in working more in theatrical lines involving pieces from varying historical periods and embracing a number of interesting themes. It was the beginning of the chance to put her passion into creating some truly unique pieces for not only the theatre but for the film and TV industry and ultimately carving a niche and name for herself.
By 2013 Lauren had moved to Nottingham and completed the final year in the BA(Hons) Costume Design and Making course at Nottingham Trent University.
Lauren now enjoys the freedom and variety of working for herself as a vintage milliner, based rather fittingly in the heart of Nottingham’s historic lace market. Along with making hats and headwear for theatre and film, she mostly now concentrates on recreating historical styles for museums and heritage organisations, applying the couture skills learned in London to her recreations.
Made discovers further that Lauren rather fascinatingly also collects vintage and antique millinery materials, alongside a growing collection of women’s Victorian and Edwardian headwear.
This keen interest in dress history led her to embark on an MA by research at the University of Huddersfield, which she completed in 2021 with a thesis titled ‘Millinery and headwear
in 1830s England’. Her current research focuses on recreating bonnets from extant garments that date from 1830 to 1880, with the long-term aim of one day publishing her patterns.
It’s very clear when we speak to Lauren that there is a real love in the work she does, designing and creating specific pieces, and restoring her collection items. Something she is keen to impart on to other budding young designers, with two days of her week dedicated to lecturing and teaching costume construction and millinery at Nottingham Trent University.
We asked her to give ups a heads-up (no pun intended!) on some of the areas of expertise she enjoys the most. Of course, theatrical millinery cropped up first...
Lauren smiles “From thirties glamour to Bollywood bling, there really is so much to do. The more historical though the better and I really love incorporating vintage materials. Also, I have a knack for picking up hats that look ready for the bin and transforming them into something spectacular!”
TV, film and theatrical commissions have grown over time as Lauren has established herself within the industry as a freelance designer. With no day the same, there are always multiple projects and often tight deadlines from clients with urgent deadlines. “It’s part of it”, Lauren laughs. “I prefer the variety of working on various projects at once and I am now used to very quick turnarounds from frantic clients who need something really specific for a show, or play, or something like that. I might take a request from overseas where they send me a material or drawing the next day and then need it couriered the day after!

“It’s always wonderful to see your work emerge on the stage, particularly as theatrical requests are so immediate. It’s completely different to the film and TV industry as filming can take a while and you can wait years before something is aired and your pieces are shown. And of course, costumes and hats for panto are only seasonal.”
We wondered if Lauren preferred designing or making her pieces. “Ah”, she muses. “I draw, and I enjoy drawing, but with hats we have to remember they are three dimensional so it is impossible to draw how it will sit on the person’s head, or the angle or way they will wear it. So, I am more of a ‘take a concept and make it as I go along’ designer. I enjoy the craft work, particular in restoration projects.
“You have to be mindful also that you may not know who is going to wear the hat, or how they will wear it so as a designer you need to make sure it is fool-proof and always looks good. It is your reputation after all.”
Lauren also still does projects and bespoke work in fashion millinery. “From big hats to little hats, practical and the ridiculous, I have tackled them all at some point! I’ve provided hats for people from all walks of life and for all manner of occasions”, she adds.
We were also keen to understand whether Lauren works by hand or machine. “I do use machine on specific parts but mostly work by hand, and that is what I love the most, and where you can create real beauty in detail.”
We discover also that Lauren prefers to work with natural fibres, such as silk, wool, fur (rabbit as a bi-product of the meat industry) and felt. These, she believes, support sustainability and are much preferable to mass produced synthetics.
Lauren’s Etsy store opened in 2014 and has gained in popularity. Her clients come from all over the world, with American orders taking over 50%. “They have a lot of re-enactment and renaissance fairs over there”, she explains. “There seems to be great interest in early 19th century bonnets and in Tudor and Henry VIII hats.”
As we finish our chat with Lauren, we cannot wonder how she could pick one project as her greatest achievement –her portfolio seems quite remarkable. But we soon learned that her proudest moment has been the acceptance onto the British Hat Guild. “To be included in their lists alongside other incredible people in the industry, it really is quite humbling, and so incredibly special to me.”

Jessica Collin, the jeweller behind independent Nottinghamshire based brand Cast & Found, expertly crafts bespoke forever rings and wedding day keepsake jewellery, from the leaves, bark, blooms and stems that her customers send her. From an early age Jessica’s love of nature and passion for jewellery seemed to be in her soul. As a child she collected for the nature table and then in the early noughties, when studying Jewellery and Silversmithing at Loughborough University in Leicestershire, Jessica developed a technique to cast nature’s finds into precious metals.
After honing her skills as a goldsmith, she took the leap with her own creative practice in 2006, creating pieces of jewellery inspired by nature. Cast & Found was inspired by Jessica’s own 18ct gold wedding rings which were crafted from twigs and bark collected from a special woodland where the couple have treasured memories together.
“As a small child my mother encouraged me to collect for the nature table; maybe that’s where it started, when I became a curator of nature. Always making, always gathering. A love of nature and a passion for jewellery seems to be in my soul, crafting our wedding rings from found bark and twigs from our families coppicing woodland was just the most natural, beautiful process for me.”
After first establishing her business Cast & Found, Jessica was commissioned to make a wedding band. The ring happened to be for a tree surgeon whose love of trees resonated with Jessica. Working with bark from their favourite tree, which nestled on a cider farm deep in Devon, a ring was made with joy to express two loves.

Jessica describes being able to connect a person with a place and ultimately capturing an emotion, as such a privilege and her main motivation for the business she runs today. Norwood Park is an exclusive private country estate in Southwell that has been lovingly restored to its original grandeur and plays host to year-round weddings, events and celebrations. Made caught up with some of the venue’s wedding and event's team members to find out more about its exquisite wedding offerings.

As we soak up the rather splendid setting of the house flanked by its beautiful gardens, we discovered that weddings and celebrations have actually been performed here since the late 1650s, giving the venue an incredible 350 years of experience. In a nod to this heritage the house has retained many of its original features, such as its lavish furnishings and the statement sweeping staircase. It’s clear too that conscientious decisions have been made to successfully add contemporary notes; the result, a venue brimming with emotions that merge cherished traditional with modern day excitement.
Couples and families come from all across the country to experience for themselves a wide range of events, retreats and celebrations, along with enjoying the estate’s beautiful accommodation, with the venue providing bespoke options to cater to all manner of gatherings, both private and corporate.
Undoubtedly though, Norwood Park has established its name primarily as an exceptional wedding venue.
We discover that the house has a number of different ceremony spaces, including its Drawing Room which seats up to 80 guests, the Long Gallery which seats up to 160 guests, and the outdoor Starkey Bandstand which can seat 140 guests and offer standing space for up to 50 more. Wedding Breakfasts can be enjoyed in a choice of two delightful venues; the Dining Room for more intimate gatherings, and the Gallery for larger celebrations. Evening receptions and partying can continue into the night in the Clock Tower and the Long Gallery, with ample space for bands, a huge dance floor, full bar, and outside courtyard.
Its events team, who are a close-knit group of really warm and welcoming individuals, combine their experience, expertise, imagination and a real passion for making couples’ dreams a reality.

We asked Maddie how she thought Norwood Park was able to remain such a popular modern-day wedding choice given its traditional style. “Couples seem to love that we can provide a genuinely beautiful Georgian venue but are still able to capture contemporary elements in their photos. Our modern gallery with its white walls and chandeliers never fails to impress!”

It’s clear that the heritage setting, and various offerings are ticking all the right boxes, but we wondered just what is involved to ensure that each event is successful and lovingly remembered.
“Ah, the key to a successful event”, explains Maddie, “is that you have to remember that you can really do as much pre-planning as you want, and for years, but ultimately it boils down to enjoying the day. I always say to couples to grab some time together on the day and just soak it in. Enjoy the moment.”
Her thoughts are echoed by Events and Marketing Assistant, Olivia. “Absolutely. Be in the moment. We always say to couples to relax, and hand over the reins to family you trust and the team around you. You’ve done the pre-planning now give yourselves chance to enjoy the day and let others manage it for you.”
Richard, too, Norwood’s Events and Catering Manager was keen to tell us the secret to ensuring the house and its team really create magic. “It’s a winning mix of preparation, organisation, communication and teamwork.”, he explains.
“You know the old saying; fail to prepare then prepare to fail. The preparation for us here is key in every department. We are meticulous in ensuring everything that couples ask for, every single detail, is covered and that we have everything ready to run like clockwork.”
“It’s a truly collective effort”, Maddie adds. “Everyone involved from the very first moment a couple visits us will be involved
in some capacity on the big day. It’s reassuring for couples to get to know our team and build rapport and trust through the planning stages. We really pride ourselves on communication and investing in that relationship. You know, sometimes we even feel as though we are losing a friendship once the wedding has passed – we have spent so long talking to couples, especially the brides, and being a part of their special day.”
“Also”, adds Olivia. “We are often involved in creating a series of events and activities both in the run-up to and immediately after the wedding day, and this really gives us a sense of involvement. We take it really seriously as if we were planning our own special day.
“We are increasingly seeing interest in pre-wedding rehearsals and post wedding dinners, with couples often choosing now to spend additional time with their guests, so again, we really build such a close relationship with the couples, helping them through all the planning and bringing their ideas alive. “
The more we chat to the team we really sense that this isn’t a job to them, but something they actually love and take pride in.
“What makes us stand out against other popular venues”, explains Richard, “is that what we really do best is listen to our couples. We aim to make the experience as bespoke as possible and we know that what is right for one couple isn’t necessarily right for another.
“Many venues can operate with a ‘no’ culture, but if something is even remotely achievable then we will find a way to make it work so couples really get to live their dream.”

Speaking of dreams, conversation soon turned to trends and we wanted to know what’s popular at the moment and what the team think will be emerging in 2024.
I’ll answer that!” says Olivia enthusiastically. “We’ve seen a real trend for audio books in the past year, also content creation. Couples are enjoying behind the scenes footage and capturing the day in a more authentic and ‘as it happens’ way, rather than the standard videography we have seen in the past.
“I think this trend will continue into 2024 and beyond”, adding “I think we are also likely to see smaller bouquets with bolder colours and a lean towards minimalism.”
Our final question turns to the elephant in everyone’s room; the cost of living crisis. We are conscious that whilst we all have dreams, is a dream wedding affordable now given the current economic climate?
“We aren’t seeing any change in the volume of bookings”, explains Maddie, “but I’d say couples are taking longer in their planning. Whereas typically you would book 12 months, sometimes 24 months in advance, we are now seeing 36 months appear more frequently. So rather than compromise on what they really want, couples are preferring to save for longer.”
Olivia adds “Yes that’s right. And we are seeing Thursdays becoming increasingly popular, not just because of the saving in comparison to a weekend date, but also it is easier now for couples to do this. The rise in shift working, remote/hybrid and changing lifestyle patterns means most guests can still attend, and often prefer this.”
“We have also adapted our menus to two-course options with dessert tables rather than individual desserts, and our broad drinks packages have been designed to accommodate for every budget” Maddie explains. “We are certainly mindful of helping couples in subtle ways, so they still receive high quality but have the affordability”
“Always spend on your venue and food” suggests Olivia, “but I say to couples who are working to budgets, save on décor, and flowers. You can be smarter with these without anyone noticing and really save money. I think it’s worth re-using bouquets and aisle flowers, for example. Have them moved after the ceremony into your wedding breakfast space, and wedding favours also are not now expected. You can trim in little ways but still have a really wonderful day.”

A wedding florist has an essential role to play on your big day creating the most beautiful floral arrangements that will bring your wedding style to life!
By Kay Gill, Flowers By Kay.From bouquets to boutonnieres, altar arrangements to centrepieces and more, before you can start choosing flowers, you'll need to find the creative professional who will make it all happen. These key questions to ask a wedding florist before hiring will ensure that you and your florist are on the same wavelength.
1. Are you available on my wedding date?
In your first correspondence with a potential wedding florist, you should definitely check to see if they're available on your wedding day. Some florists do get booked up a year in advance so do your homework quickly and get in touch with your preferred florist to see if they are available for your date.
2. How long have you been in business? How many weddings have you done? There's no right or wrong answer to this question, but you do want to hire someone who has experience in the field and has specifically worked on weddings. A professional wedding florist has likely handled a host of unique weddings and can problemsolve quickly based on years of experience.
3. Can you offer some ideas or suggestions for achieving the look I’m going for within my budget?
A wedding florist's pricing doesn't work the same as, say, a DJ or photographer. There aren't usually set packages, and much of the cost depends on the number and types of arrangements you'll need and the flowers you'd like to use. That's why it's important to come to your first meeting with a potential florist with a desired floral budget in mind, as well as some information about your wedding—an estimated guest count, how many people will need personal flowers, and the style you're going for. Florists are the best at finding creative ways to work within a variety of budgets, so be upfront about your desired spend.
4. Have you worked at my wedding venue/ with my other wedding suppliers before? Your wedding florist will work directly with many of your potential suppliers, from your venue to your wedding planner, caterer, cake designer, venue decorator and more. A good relationship between your suppliers will mean smoother sailing during both the wedding planning process and the big day.
5. Do you have other weddings or events on the weekend of my wedding? (Or do you plan to book any?)
If you're working with a larger floral company, it's entirely possible (and likely) that they may be able to handle multiple events over the same weekend or on the same day. A smaller business will only normally take on one wedding but depending on the amount of flowers required they could do multiple weddings if they wished to do so.
6. How would you describe your floral design style?
As creative professionals, experienced wedding florists are accustomed to working with a variety of clients with a variety of styles. However, some florists specialise in a certain type of floral design, like English garden, minimalist, contemporary or may just use only British grown flowers.
7. Can I see a portfolio of your work?
A picture's worth a thousand words, and your florist likely has hundreds, if not thousands, of photos of their work to show exactly what they can do. Ask to see photos that represent the florist's favourite and best work—that way, you'll know what you're seeing reflects their sense of style. 8. Which flowers do you recommend given my colour scheme, vision, and budget?
Whether you're a flower fanatic or can't tell a carnation from a craspedia, you'll need to trust your wedding florist when it comes to choosing in-season blooms that work best for your style. While you don't have to choose your exact wedding flowers at the initial meeting, this question will give you a sense of a florist's breadth of knowledge about the industry, flower availability, colours, and more.
9. Tell me about your process when it comes to working with clients.
You may be looking for a florist who you'll want to collaborate with throughout the wedding planning process, or you may prefer a florist who works more independently. Also, ask if your florist provides mock-ups before the wedding, but note that these live examples usually incur an additional charge.
10. How will you transport the flowers?
Will you work with my ceremony and reception sites to find out any rules about installation?
Will your florist simply drop off the floral arrangements for someone else to set up or will they handle the process from start to finish? Ideally, you should hire a florist who will take care of everything for you—you'll have enough going on before your wedding and shouldn't be tasked with setting up the floral décor, too! It's also essential that your florist understands any policies put in place by your venue around times of access and recollection of any hired items the day after.
11. Are there any additional fees I should know about, such as delivery, setup, breakdown, or overtime charges? These extra charges can add up quickly, so it's important for your wedding florist to be upfront so you can factor any additional fees into your total floral budget.
12. What other items can you provide, and at what cost?
Some florists can provide certain items to rent including vases, votives, candelabras, and more from their own stock, which can make your planning process much easier.
13. Do you handle breakdown at the end of the night?
At the end of your wedding reception, your vendors will need to leave the site exactly as they found it. Who will handle breakdown and removal of any rental items, such as vases (the flowers themselves should be yours to keep)? Again, your florist should be aware of any rules from your venue regarding breakdown and make you aware of their terms and conditions for rental of any items and what happens to your flowers.

There may be mounting confusion about what you really want the day to be like as everyone seems to be full of ideas and opinions on what you should do. The planning can quickly get out of control, become stressful and even cause arguments, culminating with a day that wasn’t quite what you dreamed of.
There are many resources to help, occasionally that in itself can be confusing or lead you down well-trodden paths when you want to carve out your own.
So how do you create the day of your dreams? Before you head too far down the planning path take some time out to create a mood board.
Mood board or Vision board, what is the difference? A mood board is often used by designers when putting their ideas forward to their client on decorating schemes. They use swatches of materials, paint colours and pictures of furnishings. It conveys to the client how the room will feel.
A vision board is used in self-development and normally shows the life that someone wants to create. It may show the car they want to drive, the holidays they want to take or the dream house they want to live in. It is a visual representation of their aspirations.
When you bring these two together you create something special that can act as the guide for your wedding planning.
How to create your wedding board.
Put some time aside for this when you won’t be interrupted, and you can relax and enjoy the process. Think about who you want to be involved in creating the vision. It often comes down to just one of you to drive the process but it is a special day for you both. It may be that you want this to be a wider collaboration, do you want parents, children and friends involved? If you expect differences in opinion, you may want to get everyone involved now so they can give you their input early then you can decide which ideas work for you and which don’t.
What don’t you want.
Working this out first helps take a lot of options off the table from the start. You won’t want to be focused on this as you plan so get it all out on paper and let it go.
Things to think about.
It’s easy to jump straight in and think about things like location, clothes and the cake but these are easier to think about once you are clear on the emotional aspects.
Who do you want to be there and why?
It may be a day you want to share with those who mean the most to you both, who have supported you in good and bad times
and who will understand just how special the day is for you. Alternatively, you may want to include all members of your family and use it as a reason to get everyone together, or to see friends you haven’t seen for years.
How do you want to feel?
This is a day for your love for each other to shine through. Do you want to achieve that through romance, through laughter, through sharing or in some way that is unique to you both?
What memories do you want to create?
This is a day you want to be able to remember with joy. Do you want to remember the two of you sharing your vows, the people you were with, the time it took to get all your photos, the delicious meal, the stunning cake, your first dance or the wild party? Maybe all these things, maybe something else is more important to you.
When you have an idea of what you do and don’t want it’s time to go through a pile of magazines to find pictures to represent those ideas. When doing this you want to be open to any picture that catches your eye. There’ll be a reason, but you might not know what it is just yet. It could be an idea for the cake, but it could just as easily represent a feeling of joy and being loved.
Putting it all together.
When you have a nice stack of pictures ready it’s time to start collating them on the board. As you go through placing them some will jump out as being perfect and others may not make the cut. In fact, you may even wonder why you picked them out in the first place. Others may seem right to be included but you don’t know why…yet. It may be that one of you wants to include a picture, but the other doesn’t. It’s better to have the discussion over why now than further down the line. Trust in the process. Place the pictures first before sticking them down. If you can use something to stick them that will allow for changes.
Once your board is complete and you sit back and look at it you should feel like you are already experiencing your day. If it doesn’t put a smile on your face and fill your heart with joy it might be time to start over.
Using your wedding board.
Hang your board where you can see it every day. Take photos and use it as your screen saver on your computer and your phone. This will work with your subconscious mind to remind you of what you want. Take time out during the planning process as your day approaches to check to see if your plans meet that vision. Share it with everyone involved in the planning process. It can be a great short cut when it comes to explaining what you want to all those involved.

Your soil is now warm enough to encourage root growth and stays consistently moist so is the perfect time for planting most perennials, shrubs and trees. With bareroot season near, think about taking advantage of cheaper plants sold this way.
Now is prime time to reap your produce rewards, but also think of the coming months. Homemade soups or frozen vegetables from your plot are a real treat in the stark months ahead. Do what you can to store, preserve, freeze and dehydrate, and even think about hanging flowers for drying for displays like the team do here at Clumber.
Your earlier flowering perennials may need tidying about now. We like to leave the upright seedheads such as Phlomis, Erigeron and Eryngium as structure in the garden, but the soggy leaves of perennials such as Day Lilly could be trimmed and added to compost. Also take final notes for any edits now.
If you haven’t already, it’s worth buying your bulbs. Garden centres should hold stock, but the best ones will sell out quickly. Planting a few bulbs now pays back tenfold in the spring after a cold winter. You will be so glad you took the time when those first few shoots emerge.
It’s a time of abundance in the veggie patch and orchards. Another “crop” are the deciduous leaves that will be falling soon. Collect these with a lawn mower or rake and add them to compost, rot down in bags or build a corral (an open pen made with chicken wire and stakes). You will create some wonderful, free soil-conditioner that is second to none.
Although the days are becoming shorter, you’ll have chance to enjoy the low light at the start and end of the day, a time when the garden truly looks at its best with long shadows and warm light.

Ingredients
275g pasta eg. penne, fusilli
1 tbsp Borderfields garlic infused rapeseed oil
1 small red onion, very finely chopped
225g wedge of pumpkin, peeled, deseeded and grated
1 courgette, grated
4 tbsp crème fraîche
1/4 tsp grated nutmeg
100g dolcelatte cheese, diced
To Serve
1 tbsp chopped parsley, parmesan cheese and black pepper.
Method
1. Cook pasta in a large pan of boiling salted water.
2. Place the oil into a medium sized pan, add the onion and cook gently for 2-3 minutes.
3. Add the grated pumpkin and courgette and cook gently for a further 7-8 minutes.
4. Stir in the crème fraîche, nutmeg and dolcelatte cheese and heat through until the cheese has melted.
5. Drain the cooked pasta and add to the sauce.
6. Serve garnished with shavings of parmesan cheese and a little black pepper.
Serves 4
Cooks Tip. Butternut squash can be used in place of pumpkin. Great served with a couple of sausages!
Use low fat versions of mayonnaise or crème fraîche in recipes if preferred.
Ingredients
130g diced and peeled pumpkin
300mls double cream or milk
60g brown sugar
2 eggs
¼ tsp each of ginger, cinnamon & nutmeg
Method
1. Preheat the oven 150ºC Fan/Gas 5
2. Cook the pumpkin in 4-5 tbsp water in a small saucepan until softened.
3. Place into a food processor with the remaining ingredients and blend until smooth.
4. Pour into 4 ramekin dishes and place into a roasting tin.
5. Pour boiling water into the tin to come half way up the ramekin dishes.
6. Bake for 18-20 minutes.
Serves 4
Ingredients
250g shortcrust or sweet pastry
250g pumpkin - peeled, deseeded and diced
2 eggs, lightly beaten
50g soft light brown sugar
3 tbsp double cream
¼ tsp mixed spice
Method
1. Preheat the oven to 200ºC Fan/Gas 6.
2. Roll out pastry and use to line an 18cm fluted flan tin. Chill for 30 minutes.
3. Line the pastry with greaseproof paper and fill with ceramic baking beans or rice.
4. Bake for 14 minutes.
5. Remove the paper, beans or rice.
6. Cook the cubes of pumpkin in boiling water for 12-15 minutes.
7. Drain the pumpkin and blend until smooth. Allow to cool slightly.
8. Combine the puree with the eggs, sugar, cream and mixed spice and mix well.
9. Pour into the pre-cooked pastry base and smooth it level.
10. Bake for 35-40 minutes at a reduced heat of 180ºC Fan/Gas 5 until the filling is set.
11. Serve the pudding warm with cream or ice cream.
Serves 6.
Ingredients
300g mixed dried fruits - cranberries, sultanas, raisins
200g thinly sliced apricots, prunes & figs
300mls left over cold black or fruit tea
250g diced pumpkin or canned pumpkin puree
2 large eggs, lightly beaten
50g dark brown sugar
2 tsp mixed spice
1 tsp bicarbonate of soda
200g plain flour
Method
1. Place the dried fruit into a bowl with the tea and microwave it for 5 minutes. This will plump the fruit. Leave to cool slightly.
2. Line a 20cm square cake tin with non-stick paper. Preheat the oven to 140ºC Fan/Gas 3.
3. Place the pumpkin into a bowl, cover and microwave for 5-6 minutes alternatively steam until softened.
4. Place softened pumpkin into a food processor and process until smooth. Add the eggs, sugar process again.
5. Sieve together the spice, bicarbonate and flour and add to the pumpkin mixture and finally fold in the plumped fruit.
6. Spoon the mixture into the prepared tin, levelling the surface and bake for 50-60 minutes.
7. Leave to cool on a wire tray.
8. Cut into 12 squares for serving. Serves 12.
Cooks Tip. For the pumpkin fruit cake you can use any dried fruits you have in your store cupboard. Canned pumpkin is available in larger supermarkets when fresh is not available.

The Brewery’s secret to making great cask beer is part science; part alchemy… with the ‘creativity’ in beer making rooted in the latter. This creativity is showcased though seasonal beers - a unique and exciting way to capture seasonal quintessence in a beer.
Seasonal flavours are commonly recognised, although there are flavours that transcend seasons and form a year-round beer offer. Creating a distinctive ‘standout’ seasonal beer is the aim.
These beers are not only concerned with taste, but also texture. For example, a summer beer may be light, hoppy, and refreshing, as opposed to a dark, unctuous malty winter beer. Welbeck Abbey Brewery has recently brewed Elder Maria, a superb extra pale 3.9% elderflower cask ale, using 30kg of local foraged Elderflowers. The result is delicate, light and refreshing and perfect for sunny days.
Interestingly, seasonal beers provide fabulous opportunities for food pairings too. Smashing Pumpkins, a 5.7% warm and spicy auburn beer pairs superbly with a chunky chocolate hazelnut brownie - perfect as the days draw in and you fancy a beer in front of a roaring fire!

Ready for another adventure? Then slip your walking boots on, make a hot flask, and have your camera at the ready! This super ramble is jam packed with magnificent views, following stunning countryside tracks through pretty North Nottinghamshire villages, which amble along by peaceful waterways, sprinkled with interesting snippets of history and local legend to enjoy along the way.
Just a stone’s throw from the North Nottinghamshire market town of East Retford, lies the small hamlet of Welham, and this is where we begin our walk. The small community was first mentioned in the Domesday book, and it was originally known as Wellun, Wellum, and by the 16th century Wellom. In around 1775 various local maps and documents referred to the hamlet as Welham and has been established by that name to present day.
Its name originated from an ancient spring and holy well, with the well situated on Bonemill Lane, which was formerly Wellhouse Lane. It became a bath house spa in the 1700s, and the waters were renowned for magical healing qualities, which were said to be cures for many ailments such as rheumatism and skin conditions because of the ‘high mineral content, soaking from the gypsum in the Clarborough Hills’. The stone bath still exists under the floor of a private cottage, and the spring pours into a dyke close by.
The Baulk at Welham is a high ridge country lane and ancient highway, with wonderful panoramic views over the surrounding countryside, which leads directly to the neighbouring village
of Clarborough and beyond to Little Gringley. It is an absolute paradise for wildlife, and the hedgerows are always bursting with life, especially during the Autumn, where the berries are bountiful. I love to come up here with my dog and my camera, it is lovely whatever the time of the year.
The Chesterfield Canal runs through Clarborough, and during the industrial age of the 1700s provided passage to the river Trent; with a wharf, the former Gate Inn public house, such a different environment to its peaceful tranquillity of today, as it carried coal, agricultural goods and most famously, 250,000 tons of local stone, which was used in the construction of the Houses of Parliament. The canal totals forty-six miles and is known as the ‘Cuckoo Dyke’ The stretch between Clarborough and Whitsunday Pie lock is so peaceful and picturesque, with the occasional barge chugging along or the gentle paddle of a kayak or canoe. Wildflowers such as violets adorn the bank side, and if you are lucky, you may see a Kingfisher, Heron, or a Tern diving for a tasty morsel.
One of the many local folklores is centred around Whitsunday Pie Lock. It was said to have been named so, due to a lady who lived in a cottage close by, baking a huge mouthwatering pie for the industrious navvies who were excavating the locks one Whitsunday; a tradition of pie eating at the lock still takes place on Whitsundays by visitors and boaters alike. One for the diary and do not forget your pie!

Travel writer and photojournalist Sally Outram takes us on an adventurous ramble in North Notts.
1. We begin this lovely walk on the old Welham Road which runs parallel alongside the main A620. With the public house behind you, walk along the road until you come across the waymarked footpath to your right. Proceed through the gate and continue keeping the hedge to your left. After a short distance you will cross a stream, continue until you reach a stile.
2. Cross over the stile, proceed on and you will come to the railway crossing. Advance over the crossing taking extreme care, as this line is still in use. Once over the railway line, walk along the tree lined track/lane ahead for approximately ¼ of a mile.
3. At its end you will reach Little Gringley Lane. Turn left, crossing over the road with care, and proceed to the junction (large corner on the A620).
4. Here turn right along the footpath which merges onto a lane (Pinfold Lane). Continue along (slight incline) for approximately ¾ of a mile, to an intersection. Follow the path to the left and onto The Baulk. The views from here are superb, and on a fine day you can see for miles around. Continue along crossing over the railway line, descending the baulk until you reach the village of Clarborough and onto Church Lane. (Whinleys Road is to your right).
5. Bear left onto Church Lane along the footpath, passing the pretty church of St. John the Baptist. (It is worth taking a few minutes to explore this beautiful
grade 1 listed building). Continue along Church Lane until you reach Main Street A620.
6. Turn right along Main Street and walk for a short distance, until you are opposite Big Lane. Here, cross over with care and proceed along Big Lane until you reach Broad Gores, turn right, and continue along Broad Gores until you reach its end, where you will merge on o a field.
7. Follow the track/path (bear right) over the field, where the path forks bear left and head to the play park area.
8. At the play area join the footpath to the right then immediately turn left, follow the path and head up towards the main road and the canal bridge. Cross over the bridge and join the tow path. Turn right proceeding under the bridge and walk along the canal path passing the former Gate Inn pub. If you are lucky, you may even see a narrowboat or two, as they often moor here, especially during the spring and summer months.
9. Follow the pretty towpath, go under the next bridge at Bonemill Lane, (formerly Wellhouse Lane, another great photo opportunity). (There are super views over both sides of the bridge. Continue along the towpath until you reach the legendary Whitsunday Pie Lock. You can leave the route here and cross over the main road back to the start point or continue a while longer along the towpath to the next bridge opposite the Hop Pole, and cross over here. I prefer the latter!

Now more than ever it feels like resilience is a key attribute to be able to draw on as our collective lives seem to be hit with issues around money, health, family, work and just about any area of life you care to think about on a weekly basis!
The American Psychological Association define resilience as “The process of adapting well in the face of adversity, trauma, tragedy, threats or even significant sources of stress.”
Yep, that just about covers all our issues but are some of us just lucky enough to be born with the ability to cope or can it be learned and developed, like a skill so that we can all get the benefits?!
Well, it’s true that some individuals are more naturally resilient, but the good news is that with practice we can all build this skill in readiness for whatever life wants to bring.
Key areas for development include Mental, Emotional, Physical, Social and Spiritual Resilience, with only small changes in your routines and behaviours seeing improvements in how you deal with and recover from adversity.
Here’s a few quick examples: Mental & Emotional – Regular journaling/self-reflection to become more self-aware of our cognitive distortions, triggers/reactions and thought patterns allows us to start to view ourselves non judgmentally and start to deal with these through reframing and restructuring how we think and act.
Physical – Look for small changes in lifestyle that can build with consistency over time. More walking, more stairs, less alcohol, that kind of thing. A fitter body is more able to cope with the stresses of life.
Social – The way we feel about our lives often depends on our interactions with others so try practicing the same compassion with our most challenging relationships as we do with our best friends in order to become less tightly wound.
Spiritual – Look to find meaning and purpose in something that is much greater than ourselves, get more connected to nature and the environment, things that leave you in awe!
The key is to find what works for you, a bit of trial and error and then consistency and practice. Once you feel like you have mastered a few and have the capacity to do more, build more on top.
Working at and developing strategies that give strong, balanced foundations across all these areas will help us all when dealing with that next emergency that life will inevitably throw our way. As always, I’m here if you would like some support.

Central to the Volante experience is its electrically-operated ‘K-fold’ roof.
