As summer draws to a close, we can look back with fond memories on a season of great events and record-breaking temperatures for the region. And although the dry period has been a struggle for many growers, it’s still looking like a bumper crop as 18 Issue 6 we head into the traditional harvest period that sets the scene and inspiresSep/Oct this issue’s front cover; with a hint of our lead feature too of course - weddings.

A Classic Weekend At Southwell The magnificent medieval cathedral of Southwell Minster, once again provided the spectacular backdrop for Southwell Music Festival over the week of the August Bank Holiday.
N
ottingham’s classical music sensation, cellist Sheku Kanneh-Mason, returned for his third festival. On this occasion to perform Elgar’s iconic Cello Concerto as part of the evening concert on the Saturday in the Minster. Since his first visit to the festival as a school student being mentored in Southwell Festival’s Young Musician Masterclass, Sheku has won BBC Young Musician of the Year, and become the youngest-ever cellist to reach number one in the classical charts and top 20 of the official music charts. The Kanneh-Mason family was also represented by another of the talented siblings; 17-year-old pianist Konya KannehMason, the third member of the family to appear at the festival. Konya recently won the biennial Nottingham Young Musician of the Year competition. At just 11 years old Konya achieved Grade 8 Distinction on the piano and the following year was awarded Grade 8 Distinction on the violin. Among those also performing included pianist and rising star Clare Hammond, who won the 2016 Royal Philharmonic Society - Young Artist Award. She performed a recital programme including Haydn and Debussy. Jazz appeared in the main programme for the first time this year when Manchester-based trumpeter Graham South premiered his new compositions based on the five spirituals, which Tippett used in A Child of Our Time. He was joined by regular collaborators from the thriving Manchester jazz scene in a group drawn together specifically for the festival Due to the event’s phenomenal success last year, the festival ran for an extra day this year and a number of the performances were completely sold out ahead of the event.

Alison Leckenby.
If you enjoy getting out and about then you may have already come across ‘In North Notts’, the region’s dedicated ‘what’s on’ website. If you haven’t, it’s well worth visiting to find hundreds of upcoming events across the whole of North Nottinghamshire.
O
riginally launched in 2015 by Alison Leckenby “to bring events to local people and people to local events”, In North Notts has become the region’s go-to website for local events and things to do, for all ages and interests. Now, it has just been given a makeover and a brand new website to give an even better online experience for visitors and those posting event details and information. Working on the new website alongside Retford-based design company Createinn, Alison explains: “We decided to launch a brand new website because we’ve evolved and technology has changed since we launched In North Notts, some three years ago.

Go Ape Nets Kingdom Opens The Made team.
Made visited for a team building day and came back bouncing!
I
n July in the heart of Sherwood, Go Ape opened a new adventure area for visitors – Nets Kingdom. The Made team were invited down to test out the new treetop thrills and spills and thoroughly enjoyed it!
house sits among the nets for a little respite from the bouncing and swaying, providing some great views of the forest, letting adventurers regain their composure before bouncing about again.
After one of the ‘Go Ape Nets Kingdom’ team took us through the safety procedures, we were let loose on the nets that cover over 200 square metres. The morning involved climbing, bouncing, rolling and very ungracefully falling over. Huge laughs were had as we all attempted to gain balance and grace and completely failed, although several new proposals are likely to be accepted into the Ministry of Funny Walks.
We we’re really impressed with Nets Kingdom and we will definitely be returning on a regular basis. It’s a great few hours of fun for not only office teams, but is also family friendly as well as a great laugh for friends of any age. There’s a dedicated area for kids (although if they’re daring enough they can venture straight into the other four big bounce nets), with ramps to climb in, slides to escape on and giant balls to play with.
Bouncing around on nets over 9 metres from the forest floor wouldn’t necessarily have been the first choice of activity for a few of our team, but once we had climbed into the treetops the views and the experience were awesome. A tree
It makes a great addition to Go Ape along with the Tree Top adventures and the Segways. If Robin Hood was still hiding out in the forests here, we definitely know where we’d find him and his band of merry men!
Win! Win four tickets to Go Ape Nets Kingdom Sherwood! To win the four tickets simply email to: competitions@madeinn.co.uk with the subject: ‘Made Go Ape’ State your name, email and contact number. Double your chances by looking out for the competition link on the Made facebook and twitter pages.
Good Luck! The winner will be drawn on the 15 September 2018.

J
ane Hufton, manager of local charity, Flower Pod, was really touched when one of the clients told her “I love it here, I’d come every day if I could. It makes me feel relaxed. We are learning about what we can grow to eat, and it’s inspired me to grow stuff at home”. Lizzie, a client at Reach Mansfield, is growing fruit and vegetables in her own “alittlement” in Flower Pod’s garden, one of the latest projects at Reach Learning Disability. Reach has built quite a reputation for growing beautiful cut flowers at Flower Pod, and is now growing fruit and vegetables too. Clients with learning disabilities have been busy creating “alittlements”, raised beds and planters where they can each grow what they would like. Jane explains: “Supporting clients to take initiative is really important to us, so when they asked for spaces to grow vegetables, the whole team worked to make it happen. Fortunately funding from the North of England Horticultural Society has enabled us to purchase materials to create the raised beds.” Flower Pod is currently looking for volunteers to help in the garden so if you have a couple of hours to spare please call: 01636 918271 or email: flowerpod@reachuk.org for further information.

Charter Mayor Celebrates Worksop Railway Station Refurbishment Representatives of the organisations involved in the refurbishment of Worksop Railway Station met recently to celebrate the completion of the work and to look forward to an exciting future for the station.
N
etwork Rail, supported by the Railways Heritage Trust, and contractors CML, has now completed an authentic restoration of the historic, Grade II listed, Worksop Railway Station. The station canopies, roofs and windows have been carefully refurbished and repainted, as has the signal box, located at the Carlton Road crossing. Those behind the project say it has captured the imagination of everyone involved. The Charter Mayor of Worksop, Cllr Madelaine Richardson, was joined by Janet Turlington and Gary Booth (Network Rail); Andy Savage (Railway Heritage Trust); Raj Sharma (CML); Cllr David Pidwell and Beverley Alderton-Sandbrook (Bassetlaw District Council); Rick Brand, Barry Coward and Sharon Richardson (North Notts & Lincs Community Rail Partnership (NNLCRP)); Philip Jackson (Worksop Business Forum); Paul Maina (The Railway Café); Richard Allsopp and Alan Smalley (Friends of Worksop Railway Station); Richard Isaac (Northern Rail) and Bob Fleming and Peter Bartrop (Bassetlaw (North Notts) Railway Society) to celebrate the refurbishment at Worksop Railway Station and discuss opportunities to further improve the station.
sonally worked on building the signs in his own time. Network Rail customer manager Janet Turlington said: “Network Rail is delighted to have carried out this project with the Railway Heritage Trust and to be positively contributing to the experience of the community in and around Worksop.” Rick Brand, vice chair of NNLCRP, said: “We are very grateful to Network Rail, the Railway Heritage Trust, Northern Rail and contractors CML, for completing these works so sympathetically. When Northern Rail is able to introduce its new services during 2019, Worksop Railway Station will provide an even better service to commuters and leisure travellers alike.” Andy Savage, of the Railway Heritage Trust, was delighted with the outcome of the work by Network Rail and CML and is identifying future projects for investment, in partnership with North-
ern Rail, to further improve the station. Cllr David Pidwell, Cabinet Member for Transport at Bassetlaw District Council, said: “It’s fantastic that so many organisations have worked together to complete this important restoration.” The new colour scheme replicates what was originally used by The Great Central Railway (GCR) in England, which came into being when the Manchester, Sheffield and Lincolnshire Railway changed its name in 1897 in anticipation of the opening in 1899 of its London Extension. The GCR was the first railway to be granted a coat of arms. The arms were granted on 25 February 1898. On 1 January 1923, the company was grouped into the London and North Eastern Railway (LNER). Worksop Railway Station will feature in this year’s Worksop Charter celebrations, on Saturday 8 September.
Charter Mayor welcomes those involved in Worksop Railway Station refurbishment.
Network Rail allocated significant additional funding to complete the heritage detailing. Alan Smalley, a transport heritage specialist, specified and designed the Worksop running-in boards to original specifications and CML site manager, Darren Arno, per-

Osberton International Horse Trials Some of the world’s best riders will descend on the Osberton Estate from the 26 - 30 September, for The Osberton International Horse Trials, with stars of the future looking to show what they can do.
O
sberton promises to be a star-studded event, with Olympic medallists gracing the course. The Young Horse Championships give you the chance to see the star horses of the future. And if that wasn’t enough, the novice competitions give those riders who are new to the circuit a great opportunity to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with their idols. The event this year will also see a much awaited return of shire horses, following their debut last year. Bringing together 50 of the best working shire horses from across the UK, you can see for yourself why these magnificent animals are so symbolic of Britain’s heritage. Displays from England’s oldest coach horses will include a ploughing competition, plus you can marvel at their beauty as they parade around the arena. It’s not just horses who have a chance to shine at Osberton; the event will also include its very own dog show. Some of the best canines from across the region will take centre stage, so if you’re a dog-lover, you’ll be in good company at Osberton. Osberton’s shopping village continues growing year on year. From fashion to homemade jams, crafts to gifts for your pets, visitors are sure to find a hidden gem amongst the stalls. And of course, the International Horse Trials wouldn’t be complete without a variety of equestrian products too. Perhaps this is a chance to get a head start on your Christmas shopping. The Osberton International Horse Trials will take place from 26– 30 Sep at the Osberton Estate in Worksop. The Estate has been home to the Trials since the 1960s and each year welcomes more visitors than ever before. For details visit: osberton-horse.co.uk

Making Riding Accessible Grove House Stables makes riding accessible for all and tells us how horses can be a powerful inspiration and help individuals in many different ways
N
estled in the picturesque North Notts countryside, surrounded by canals and rolling fields, Grove House Stables LLP is a hub of equestrian activity for riders of all ages and abilities. Established in 1991 by British Equestrian Federation Elite Recreational Coach Andrew Stennett, the stables, based in Misterton, has grown into a well-respected equestrian centre that is constantly evolving to become more inclusive, making riding an activity that is accessible to everyone. As a British Horse Society, Pony Club and Accessibility Mark approved centre, staff are experienced in providing lessons to riders of all levels, including disabled riders following training with the RDA to gain their Accessibility Mark accreditation. After the launch of I–Pegasus CIC (Community Interest Company), Andrew
hopes to be able to extend their services to help disengaged young people, through their riding club, competitions and events aimed at riders in the local community. “It is exciting times at Grove House Stables as we look to the future and how horses can do more than just teach people to ride,” said Andrew. “Spending time with horses can be incredibly powerful, particularly for those that have become disillusioned with main stream education. “Through these developments I am hopeful we can open up more opportunities to youngsters in the community who wouldn’t previously have been able to enjoy such activities and help them find the right path in life.” The training facilities include a 20m x 60m indoor arena, an all-weather outdoor riding arena, a jumping paddock and a cross-country course, all of which are available to hire. www.grovehousestables.co.uk

ina, who runs the family-owned Tinderbox Sport Horses, will be competing in the four year old and six year old championships at Osberton. This will be Tina’s fourth consecutive Osberton Horse Trials and she told Made she was looking forward to the challenge again this year. “The ground is amazing and you know whatever the weather it will be good. It always feels like an honour to ride at such a fabulous estate.” Osberton will come at the end of a typically busy year for Tina. Competing almost weekly, she takes part in events across the country, as she has done for the past 28 years. “It’s a very busy time. It’s rare we have a weekend at home.” Osberton will see Tina taking part in the 4 and 6-year-old championships.

This exhibition will run from 15 Sep to 27 Oct 2018 and will include work by Ted
Hamlyn, Janet Buckle, Neil McGregor, Ann Everitt, Hilary Cartmel, Kate Houghton,
Polly Warren, Maggy Milner, Rosemary
Firth, Chris Campbell, Carol Eason, Julian Grainger, Kate van Millingen and Michael Johnson. The artists all live or work in the
Retford area and have worked with flowers as a subject, often over many years.
The exhibition seeks to visually explore
why, in these super high tech times, does this subject, often perceived as soft and genteel, still hold relevance to artists working today.
For many artists, flowers are an absorbing and demanding subject. They are short-
lived, so a lack of time is an additional
pressure for the artist to solve the problem of colour and form and expression.
The show will include a range of paint-
ings, collages, drawings and printmaking
approaches with several works by each artist.

Running now until 7 Oct LAID: A sculptural installation by Laura Ellen Bacon The Harley Gallery, Welbeck Estate Using silver birch gathered from around the vast Welbeck estate
in Sherwood Forest and willow from Somerset, artist Laura Ellen Bacon has created a huge, new, ‘human-scale’ sculpture to twine around the ground floor at The Harley Gallery.
“I’m fascinated by enclosures, including hedges and the ancient craft of hedgelaying. It’s the life-seeking sap that inspires me most, how the hedge responds to the skilfully wielded, fierce blow of the billhook - and flourishes as a result.” Laura Ellen Bacon
The entire installation is made by hand. Bacon and a small team of
helpers knotted, weaved, twisted and plaited the birch and willow over hundreds of hours to create a form at once strange and familiar, straddling the natural and the man-made world.
LAID is Laura Ellen Bacon’s largest ‘woven space’ in a gallery setting for nearly four years. Her works embrace, surround or engulf architectural and natural structures.

Festival of Food & Drink This year’s Festival of Food and Drink is bringing a new look and an all new celebrity chef line-up to the National Trust’s Clumber Park on Saturday 15 and Sunday 16 September.
T
he line-up starts with Michelin star chef Dan Doherty, who will make his festival debut alongside his TV judging colleague Chris Bavin, both star on BBC’s Britain’s Best Home Cook alongside Mary Berry and will appear on the Saturday the 15th. On Sunday, Clumber Park will welcome Masterchef 2016 Champion Jane Devonshire and actress Gaynor Faye, best known for her roles in Coronation Street and Emmerdale, but now also making regular appearances in the kitchen on ITV’s Lorraine promoting Yorkshire cooking.
All of the celebrity guests will be demonstrating their culinary skills in the free-toattend Cookery Theatre, with seating for around 500 with standing room around the sides. They will also be meeting food fans and producers as well as signing copies of their books and taking those much-coveted selfies. Festival organiser Bev Channell said: “We are thrilled with this year’s line-up of guests. They each bring such different cooking styles but the same passion for food to the event and I’m sure they will be a massive hit with visitors.” To celebrate its sixth year as the region’s biggest event of its kind, this year’s festival will see some exciting new interactive features launched as well as a brand new look.
The first new feature is the launch of Gin School in association with Savour Magazine. For just £10, ‘pupils’ can learn all about the quintessential British spirit from our GINstructors, taste testing seven different gins. As well as ‘ginspirational’ ideas on how to drink and what mixers, students also receive a goodie bag featuring discount vouchers and guides to try out crafty concoctions at home. Alongside the mouth-watering menu of producers on offer in the Food & Drink Marquee, the festival vibe continues with live music throughout the weekend, alongside street food traders and pop-up cafes.

Business
Leading For Tomorrow – Big Questions! In the last issue, my message talked about ‘change’ being inevitable, indeed all predictions demand we should expect change hitting us at a speed we have not yet experienced nor can
I
imagine. So, what is normal? What is today’s business as usual?
remember working with a forward thinking CEO in the publishing industry about 20 years ago and she told me about a couple of her colleagues who said in terms of a current ‘change’ initiative and the disruption caused, there was “light at the end of the tunnel”. She responded: “I told them, learn to love the tunnel!” So how will ‘change’ impact on your organisation? And how will you ensure your business is ‘fit for purpose’ in a world of constant change? How will you thrive in the ‘change tunnel’? Inevitably this involves your people, often your most expensive resource, and so here are some big questions to consider as a ‘real time’ exercise. I urge you to take a few minutes quiet time and reflect on these questions, whatever your role in your organisation – change will, without doubt, affect us all.
What changes in the world, the market place etc, will impact your business in, say, five years? Create your headline responses and beyond these, consider what’s likely to happen in the following areas, all of which will impact your working world: What change might happen: politically; economically; socially; technologically; environmentally? It’s a prediction and best guess of course, but our challenge is to read the signs and gear up for change.
and expect from their organisation in return? What do they need from the organisation in order to thrive? Note your thoughts and move on to my last question. Given your responses to the three questions above:
What is the implication on leaders and managers throughout your business? What are the qualities and behaviours you need your managers to show in order to achieve all of the above? Create your list and refine it later.
The Hats We Wear
Leading
Coaching
Managing
So given your answers to this:
In order to thrive in the future, what do you need, want and expect of your people in every role, throughout your business? Brainstorm a list of what great contribution from people might be; what qualities do you need to see and how do you want to experience people behaving and contributing? From here, another challenging question, yet important to respond to, would be:
If people in your organisation are going to respond and contribute as you’ve outlined above, what might they want 32
Consider this model, when thinking about people in your organisation with the title of leader or manager. My view is that any of us with the title of ‘manager’ is usually required to wear all three hats as shown in this model. Leading: When you read the word “leader” what springs to mind? Usual responses distil down to future direction, vision and working in a way where people ‘choose’ to follow.
In order to thrive in the future, what do you need, want and expect of your people in every role, throughout your business?

Managing: Again, when distilled down, usually this is about being ‘in control’! Monitoring achievements, KPIs etc, monitoring budgets and making sure people are doing and achieving what they should be. Coaching: Is about building performance capability, success and enabling people to achieve their potential. Just reflect on this then and consider where your managers and especially you, spend the most amount of time. Go a step further and put a percentage on it. I conduct straw polls during my leadership programmes and most of the time managers tell me they spend 70 to 80% of their time wearing the ‘manager’ hat! We then question the value this adds to the business. Surely this is ‘spreadsheet management’ and this can be done largely from behind the desk with the aid of a computer! We’re talking about change and people here, so if we’re bogged down in little more than a glorified admin role (ouch!), how can we hope to lead our business and people through change? Adjusting our priorities and gearing up to spend more time wearing the leading and coaching hat is essential. How could you do that? How serious are you and what will you change this month?
ADVICE YOU CAN MEASURE THE VALUE OF

It can be done! As I write this, I’m away with one of my major industrial clients, working with senior leaders as part of a programme spanning 12 months. Today I’m hearing that two senior leaders have created space in their diary to the tune of four and six days per month, as a result of attending more to leadership matters, rather than being bogged down with management/control issues. Simply assessing where they add real value, letting go of a little perceived control, trusting people’s capabilities more and getting out of the weeds, has resulted in these leaders adding more value and being more effective.

For better or for worse? How to succeed in business with your spouse By Simon Shaw, Director at Duncan & Toplis
W
ith over 1.4m UK businesses being run by couples in 2018, what is the secret to ensuring business stays business when you work with your life partner? Big UK companies such as Emma Bridgewater, Jo Malone and Go Ape! were all started by husband/wife teams, and with Emma Bridgewater turning over £17.6m in 2017, it’s clear that, if you get it right, you can turn your business partnership into a story of spousal success. I met my wife Tracy in 1992, when we were working together at another accountancy firm. In 1998, after we got married, I was looking for a change (of job that is!) and heard about a job at Duncan & Toplis. Tracy joined the team in 2016 and, although we work in different offices now, the “onefirm” approach that Duncan & Toplis
emphasises means that there are many overlaps.
My top tips for working with your spouse: • Leave work at work - no one wants to argue about work problems at home, but when you work with your partner, this can be difficult. Try to make a conscious effort to turn your business emails off and spend time with each other as partners, as opposed to colleagues. • Be your own person in the office - treat your partner like a colleague, and, as with leaving work at work, try and leave personal issues at home too. • Pretend you don’t work together. Asking someone how their day was when you were there may seem pointless, but it helps to separate that professional attitude with how someone may actually be feeling. Let your partner vent if they want to, and listen, not as a colleague, but as a spouse. Tracy and I have found working together to be a positive experience but unfortunately, marriages sometimes don’t work out. What do you do if your personal relationship breaks down but your business is still thriving? One of our clients, Loopwheels, has their own advice for making it work.

Gemma Pearce and her husband Sam put a more formal governance structure in place last year. “We’ve always worked well together,” says Gemma, “but every business decision is personal. With another staff member joining the team and an independent chairman it’s working really well for us”. At Duncan & Toplis, we’re regularly asked to help people organise their business affairs and our client’s needs are at the heart of our work. Wild Inspiration Made visits Laura Baxter, metalsmith & jeweller, in her studio on the Welbeck Estate & discovers the creative process inspired by nature & realised through beautiful & unique pieces of jewellery. 36
L
aura Baxter takes inspiration from the plants and birdlife she sees all around her. Working from her studio on the Welbeck Estate, she makes handmade, contemporary jewellery, using nature as an inspiration and guide. “I’m trying to capture the essence of plants and things that make me smile or what I really enjoy drawing. But I don’t want to duplicate what nature already does so well. What I’m interested in doing is capturing what interests me and stylising it,” says Laura. Laura makes intricate jewellery from precious metals such as silver and gold and gemstones including emeralds, tourmalines and rubies. Her pieces include daisy rings and earrings; buttercup stick pins; wildflower brooches, violet bud stem earrings and seed pendants. All beautifully hand-crafted and many pieces are bespoke. Her studio gives a fascinating insight into the whole creative process, with several pieces of her work at various stages of completion. She surrounds herself with inspirational photos,

sketches, dried flowers and intricate specimens that she has gathered from her walks, her garden and from the roadside. She loves to experiment using other materials at the beginning of the process, working with paper and metal. She also often makes pieces in copper or gilding metal ahead of the precious metal stage, before being completed. “I hand make all my own work from metal sheets and wire using traditional silversmithing techniques including piercing, shaping, raising, die-pressing, soldering and forging techniques,” says Laura. “Detail is very important to me. I hand make all my own jewellery fasteners and findings including brooch pins and catches so they add beautiful finishing touches to my work.” It’s been a particularly busy time for Laura, who, after featuring on BBC 1’s Countryfile, finds her self inundated with orders from people up and down the country wanting their own piece of her beautiful work and to take part in her jewellery workshops. “Typically people come to the workshops from as far afield as maybe an hour or two away, but after the Countryfile appearance I was getting people in from further afield.

“I’m trying to capture the essence of plants & the things that make me smile” “Last week I had three people form Aberdeen and London filling the workshop – it’s been quite interesting. It’s incredible what a few minutes of television has done. Laura in her studio on the Welbeck Estate.
“Most people come with no experience and I have four to five people, because I find this is the right number to work with. People come and make something that exceeds their expectations and they get that one-to-one time with me that they feel they want.” Originally from the Lincolnshire Wolds, Laura did a degree in 3D wood, metals, ceramics and glass at Manchester Metropolitan University, before moving to Brighton for a while to run her own jewellery business. She says her career took off after showcasing her work at tradeshows in the USA. “It was fantastic, really, really good out there and I found out that my part-time job at Hove Museum wasn’t really a part-time job anymore. I was going to New York three to four times a year, doing shows.” Laura enjoys developing new ideas and lines, but is happy to work with clients to further develop her work. “People do come to me for one-off rings, engagement rings and wedding rings. I’ve a client here for instance, who has ordered a primroses pendant with five primroses in gold and earrings – and instead of gold centres they are having all diamonds. “I do like the bespoke work, partly because it’s a brief and I respond well to that way of working. It’s about a mixture and a meeting of their ideas and mine and I don’t mind compromising as long as it retains its integrity.” Laura is keen to look at ways of expanding her creative work and is currently in the early stages of developing a new range of jewellery that is quite different to her signature flower and bird themes. Laura’s next big event is Handmade at Kew, at the Royal Botanic Gardens, from 4 - 7 October. “Kew is the perfect backdrop for my botanically inspired work and has become my main London show for the year”. “I am a metal smith and jeweller and that will always be my principle role, but I am also a designer and I always like to think about different ideas and work in different ways.” View Laura’s work on her website www.laurabaxter.co.uk

Lawn Master, Let The Recovery Begin! Ian Stephens from Lawn Master Nottinghamshire and Lincolnshire shares his top tips for bringing your lawn back to life and keeping it in the green!

amilies returning from their holidays and preparing for children going ‘back to school’ signals the end of one of the most stressful summers in a very long time... for lawns anyway.
Grass is remarkably resilient and despite drying out and going into natural dormancy, looking brown or even yellow during the heatwave, a lot of them will have begun to bounce back. However, you may notice bare areas, uneven growth and poor colour, in which case a visit from a qualified turf professional is highly recommended as this is an ideal time to renovate your lawn. Lawn Master can easily transform its appearance; in fact, without digging any grass up, former Golf Course Manager Ian Stephens and his team at Lawn Master Nottinghamshire and Lincolnshire can turn it in to a beautiful green lawn in just a few short weeks.

Consider cutting back overhanging trees and shrubs, which cast shade onto the lawn. Letting as much sunlight and airflow as possible through dries morning dew, helps prevent turf diseases and reduces moss formation. Ian always recommends that customers have their lawn aerated over the winter, but this year it is even more important. Soil that has become very dry will cause problems, stopping the water from percolating through as it should. Aeration helps move water from the surface through the soil profile and gives roots room to ‘breathe’. As the soil loosens it gradually collapses into the holes which will also helps reduce compaction. If you have been struggling to get your lawn to grow properly for a while now, contact Ian to see what he can do for you. Having an expert manage your lawn means that they can see which areas need more work than others. With continued care, they get to know any particular problem areas and focus on soil and plant health, preventing problems before they occur. As daylight hours shorten, grass needs all the help it can get to build its strength up ready for winter. One of the most important jobs that should be done on a regular basis this time of year is the clearing of leaves. Although it can be a nuisance, clearing them most days is really beneficial for the grass. Even if a lawn is covered for just a few days it starts to weaken, which makes it easier for weeds and diseases to establish in the turf. Moving garden furniture and children’s toys from the lawn onto hard standing also helps.

Update old furniture with a new paint finish of dark matt colours and combine with vintage fabrics, providing both functionality and unique styling. Display a collection of curiosities such as vintage ornaments, stuffed animals and glass to create a talking point or use a collection of old mirrors and fairy lights to bounce light around an otherwise dark space. The possibilities are endless and with a little help from internet sites such as Pinterest and Instagram, you will find plenty of inspiration. So, before you throw away that old set of drawers or update that fitted wardrobe, look at the endless possibilities open to you with a little paint and creativity. Do not be afraid to use what is around you and have fun hunting out those quirky pieces. Your home is a reflection of you so let it speak and be loud.

Ask The Expert We have asked the experts for their advice for couples about to wed, so that you can relax a little & plan your big day with ease.
The Big Plan
A Perfect Place The Venue Ye Olde Bell Hotel & Spa
Jewellery - The Wedding Ring David Fowkes Jewellery
Take any potential stress out of planning your big day by hiring a wedding planner. Wedding planners can work with you to plan the perfect day for you and your guests, acting as coordinators to bring everything together as smoothly as possible.
Choosing your wedding venue is a massive decision, it will set the tone and provide the backdrop for what essentially will be the most exciting day of your life.
Wedding rings are a symbol of love and commitment and will be worn for many years to come, so it is vital that they are given time and careful consideration.
There are many factors to consider, but most importantly you need to feel at ease with your surroundings and the people who are going to help you through the planning stages.
Think outside the box: a wedding ring does not need to be a traditional, plain band. A ring can be bought already made: the process of client commission gives the couple an opportunity to truly personalise their rings and capture the uniqueness of their relationship. One couple recently engaged at Everest Base Camp in Nepal chose to have mountain-inspired wedding rings, capturing the majesty, beauty and colours of their surroundings. They appreciated the opportunity to create truly unique rings to represent their union.
Wedding Planner
Choosing the right planner for you is the first thing to consider. Look at a number of planners before making any decision, after all they are going to be working with you for the long haul. Speak to the planners about your budget and your overall vision for your wedding. Ask them about their previous work and the venues they have worked with. Make a shortlist of potential favourite planners and then contact them with your wedding date to double check availability. Confirm pricings. Once you have made a decision arrange an initial meeting to discuss your wedding in details. Prep for any meetings by bringing ideas and photos with you that will help give a flavour of the wedding you desire.
The service you receive from the moment you make an initial enquiry at a venue will give you an indication of what to expect on the day, only settle for excellence. Naturally you’ll want your wedding to be unique and tailored to your own personalities, so find a venue with the flexibility and desire to deliver your dreams. Kate Firth, General Manager, Ye Olde Bell Hotel & Spa events@yeoldebell-hotel.co.uk www.yeoldebell-hotel.co.uk
All That Glitters
Where the wedding band is worn alongside an engagement ring, they must be perfectly matched: if not, rings can be damaged through contact. Engagement rings can be modified by specialist Goldsmiths to achieve a snug fit, or modified to add details such as engraving, diamonds and gemstones. Do get your engagement ring serviced before the big day. Pop them into a specialist Goldsmith so that they can be cleaned and polished in preparation for the exchanging of rings! Gorgeous Gowns The Wedding Dress Frances Day Bridal
Whether wedding dress shopping is something you have always dreamt about or not, it is more than likely to be the single most expensive clothing purchase you will ever make. So it is worth ensuring you spend time choosing the right one. Most bridal boutiques operate by appointment only, so in the first instance, it is always wise to get in touch and book your slot. At the boutique, you will be guided through the designer collections on offer and be asked to select around five gowns to try on to start with. When our bridal consultant sees you in a gown and understands your body proportions, they will select some ‘wild-cards’ for you. It is always really beneficial to keep an open mind during this process. Not every dress is blessed with hanger appeal, but with a body in it, it can really make the couture detailing come alive. You will be invited back to the boutique around two months prior to your wedding to begin your alterations. The majority of brides need around three fittings. The week prior to your wedding you may be asked to come and try your dress on for one final check. At this point your dress and veil will have been pressed and packaged ready for you to take home and get married! Frances Day Bridal hello@francesday.co.uk www.francesday.co.uk

Beers & Ales Welbeck Abbey Brewery
With so many style and design variations on the market, choosing the perfect wedding cake can be daunting, but it is possible to take away the stress and enjoy the experience.
If you fancy something a little different from the traditional wedding cake, have you thought of cheese?
Here at Welbeck Abbey Brewery we love good beer and we love a good wedding, and the two can easily go hand in hand.
The Cake Patacake
The first step is meeting a cake designer! Book in for a consultation where you can sample cake flavours, view their work and discuss your needs. Visiting wedding fairs/ venues is a good way to source designers, as well as recommendations, but remember, it is also good to have a personal connection. Book them in quickly. Bare in mind some designers book one to two years in advance, so the sooner the better. Discuss the styles you like - classic, vintage, rustic, glamorous, but remember to choose a cake that reflects you as a couple and is compatable with the style of the venue. Depending on the size, design, flavour and intricate details of the cake, the price will vary. Always set a budget, the designer will always offer alternatives to help you stay on budget. Always obtain a copy of your cake contract so you know exactly what to expect. Lastly, don’t worry! Enjoy planning your wedding and enjoy your day, we are professionals, and will make sure you have your dream cake on your dream day. Cheese wedding cakes are becoming very popular, and it is something that couples can create on their own, for a bespoke cheese centrepiece. Aim for around 100g of cheese per person. Many couples choose a cheddar, a blue (such as Stichelton, made here in North Nottinghamshire), and a soft cheese which caters for a wide selection of tastes. It is recommended that the couple tries the different cheeses beforehand to make sure that they like what they’re ordering and not to try to please everyone, after all the ‘cake’ is for them and their big day. When considering ordering look at suppliers and companies that source farmhouse cheeses from across the country, as many will often be able to order cheeses especially for your occasion. Welbeck Farm Shop work with Neal’s Yard Dairy to provide a great variety of cheeses on their specialist counter. The next step is to consider how to present your cheeses; whether a decadent cheeseboard or stacked like a traditional wedding cake. Choose a supplier to work with who can help you understand the size of each cheese and how well they stack (so softer cheeses don’t get squashed!) to make a great selection that will wow your guests. Welbeck Farm Shop farmshop@welbeck.co.uk www.welbeckfarmshop.co.uk
A Fine Brew
For a spring or summer wedding we recommend a light, citrusy beer that’s easy on the palate and pale in colour. For an autumn or winter wedding, go with a more traditional, slightly darker beer, like our auburn ale Red Feather, and perhaps a case or two of stout for those who fancy something more robust and warming. Try contacting local breweries directly, as this is often more cost effective than buying from supermarkets or the venue, and allows more flexibility when choosing quantity. Most breweries sell individual bottles, polypins (36 pints) or proper cask (72 pints). Remember, keep the ABV low without compromising on taste. There are plenty of locally produced low gravity beers on the market that are well made and boast big flavours! Welbeck Abbey Brewery info@welbeckabbeybrewery.co.uk www.welbeckabbeybrewery.co.uk
SUITS
Tipples & Toasts Wine Accompaniments Mr & Mrs Fine Wine When choosing the beverages to accompany the many different parts of your wedding day, speak to someone who has knowledge and experience in recommending the perfect type of wine or fizz. A light refreshing white wine or perhaps a fizz to greet guests before the reception, a wine to complement the chosen meal choices and a champagne to toast. Meeting with a wine seller is advisable, as they will work closely with clients to select the best wine choices based on food pairings, guest numbers or budget.

Why not consider setting up a Wedding wine list for your guests? A custom-built list created with their tastes in mind to create a dedicated and personal wine collection to enjoy. As a married couple perhaps you can even create lists to start your own wine cellar or a collection to celebrate and enjoy memorable anniversaries. Work on six glasses of sparkling per bottle; guests will have one glass for the toast and consider two to three glasses per guest for the reception. For red and white wines, consider six glasses per bottle and allow half a bottle per person for dinner. It is also worth working with a company that will be able to offer free local delivery and sale or return as part of the service.

More is definitely more when it comes to dressing your venue, use all the space available to you – ceilings, floors and walls – to create drama and a stage for your wedding day.
Entertainment between the main elements of the day shouldn’t be overlooked. While drinks are being sipped or guests are waiting for their call to action with the photographer there are plenty of ideas for a little light entertainment, perhaps something to do or nibble. Make it part of the wedding theme and a talking point too. Add a little ‘wow’ factor to your day. Create moments with a personal touch.
Photography is certainly another part of your wedding that is worth investing in. These are images that will capture your big day for future generations to view, so making sure you get this right will pay dividends.
Make table centre pieces a talking point by mixing up your floral arrangements with antique pieces and curiosities, along with table games and books. Create an air of romance by using cut glass, pearls and candles to bounce light around the room, creating an opulent feel. Don’t forget your ceiling space. This is often overlooked, but when dressed, provides the room with a dramatic and cosy atmosphere - try using mixed umbrellas, floral displays or lanterns. Add a modern touch by replacing flowers with succulent plants to provide a simple yet elegant feel. Not only an up to date look but also great keepsakes for guests to take home – win, win. Most importantly, have fun and let your imagination go. Georgie Muirhead Design hello@georgiemuirheaddesign.co.uk www.georgiemuirheaddesign.com

Include games, indoor or outdoor, depending on the season or treats for guests to help themselves to. It helps when little ones need entertainment and keeps the day flowing and the adults and children happy. After all, there’s a child in us all, who’s eyes light up at the sight of anything sweet or fun to do. If your wedding theme includes treats, give thought to your favourites as a child, perhaps flavours that remind you of good times, or maybe pick a blast from the past inspired from the decade you met. That kind of personal touch takes a wedding treat from being nice to being memorable. And remember, Love is sweet, so why not enjoy a treat!

Meet with your photographer in advance to discuss your needs and make sure you are happy with their approach. Go through what sort of photos you are looking for - modern or traditional? Look through their portfolio to see if they have the feel you want and speak to them about your expectations from the shoot do they offer rehearsal shoots for instance? Look at their social media pages to view comments and to see more examples of their work. Has the photographer worked at your venue before – this could be an advantage as they may know the best places and views for great shots. Remember, your photographer, like you, wants to get the very best images from your big day, so work closely with them on the planning to ensure you get the best results.

Beautiful Blooms Floristry Flowers By Kay
Before the apprearance of social media and website blogs, people would look down more traditional routes to help them pick their flowers and choose a florist. Brides would choose arrangements from a catalogue of commercially produced styles; the designs and flowers available were very limited and I would hear ‘I’ll have that one, in peach’. Today everything has changed and it is rare not to meet a bride who hasn’t found her inspiration via social media. I have a love/hate relationship with Pinterest however! It can be an incredibly useful tool but it can also be very misleading. Most images feature American floral displays and beautiful images that are there to be admired but can often cost thousands of pounds to replicate. A good wedding florist will show you their own designs, advise and choose affordable seasonal flowers that will compliment you and your personality, your styling preferences and adhere to your budget. Save The Date!
Church On Time
Wedding invites and other related stationary give you the chance to put your own personal mark on your wedding right from the outset.
With so many options for different types of wedding transport, it’s advisable to plan this area of your big day in advance.
Your closest friends and family will be receiving an invite through the post, so getting this right will help you set the tone for the wedding ahead.
Vehicle options include traditional, modern, vintage and alternative transport, with budgets to suit all pockets. Traditional vehicles are popular and offer classic backdrops for photos, while modern vehicles offer a wide choice of styles and sizes. Open top busses, campervans and helicopters have all been used and this change from the traditional is proving increasingly popular.
Invites
Professional stationary suppliers will not only produce stunning results, they can often also help you design the perfect invite. Choose from a variety of designs or go bespoke and have original artwork produced, just for you.
Transport
Maybe look to keep designs seasonal and in keeping with the time of year you are getting married.
Choose a wedding vehicle that suits the theme and feel of your big day and ensure there is enough transport and space to cater for those in the wedding party.
As well as invites, you may also want to consider ordering place cards, table numbers, menus, thank you and R.S.V.P cards and envelopes.
Discuss detailed wedding arrangements with the vehicle supplier – talk about the route and any possible pick up and stop off points. Each wedding is different so there are plenty of options and ideas out there. The fun bit is choosing what is right for you.
Perfect Wedding Pieces To add finishing touches to your venue, find quirky & memorable pieces that make your day truly your own, visit Elizabeth & Stevens, this emporium of ideas will inspire and also will also hire out one-off pieces for your big day.

Adding The Magic Entertainment DnC Events
Choosing entertainment for your wedding is an exciting and fulfilling part of planning your big day. Whether you are looking to book a DJ, hire dancers, a string quartet or other type of entertainment, getting this element right can make all the difference and will ultimately be very rewarding. First of all, look to book your entertainment early. Make sure you think ahead here to avoid disappointment. Look at lots of different entertainment options. What have you seen that has proven popular at events you have attended? There are plenty of new and exciting innovations in entertainment that are growing in popularity. Look at arcade games, casinos and selfie mirror photobooths, for instance. Consider the size of your venue, is there room for the type of entertainment you are thinking about? The amount of room you have to play with could ultimately decide what entertainment you choose. This is one of the most important days of your life so look for great value and a good reliable service. We all have our own budget but don’t always look for the cheapest option. Rest & Refresh Guest Accommodation Norwood Park
Having your closest friends and family with you to celebrate is definitely a priority when planning your special day. Accommodation choice is, for many, essential, allowing arrival in good time and providing the opportunity to freshen up. Plan ahead and consider how long you need to book the accommodation for, especially if a long journey is part of the plan and your guests have to travel long distances. One option for the bride and groom is to look for accommodation that is close to the chosen wedding venue or by selecting somewhere that will allow you exclusive use for the wedding and to accommodate your guests too. Consider extending your stay around the wedding day itself allowing you to arrive and relax with friends the day before, perhaps to enjoy a glass of bubbly whilst getting ready and catch up with those you have not seen for a while. Exclusive use also means that at the end of the evening, your guest won’t have far to go to their own suites, taking away the worry of finding a taxi or the decision of who is going to drive home You can all meet for breakfast, a perfect time for sharing a story from the night before, reliving magical memories and for family and friends to wish the newly weds further congratulations. Friends & Fun Stags & Hens Blyth Activity Centre
Modern stag parties, hen parties or even ‘sten’ (both stags and hens together) are much more diverse than before. Creating a fun, memorable (for the right reasons!) day for all to remember can be a difficult task. Firstly you need to consider the individuals in the party; age, physical ability and price per head, thought has to given to providing fun from 7 to 70 year olds. Finding the right activity can be quite a challenge. To make it easier use a company that can organise a bespoke package. As a local company, we have had years of experience organising this type of activity and know that it is more entertaining and enjoyable for the party if something specific to them can be created to offer a great experience. If your group is quite an active party, something all-inclusive such as archery, is a great bonding and banter experience – everyone loves a competition. All events should include something unique and something very few have experienced, perhaps even something very different, tractor driving for example! Dressing up is always fun, perhaps consider prizes throughout the activities and check how the party will be catered for food and refreshments, as you might want to plan ahead and around your activities. Whatever you do, make sure it’s a great way to send the bride and groom off to their ‘happily ever after’. Blyth Activiity Centre contact@blythactivitycentre.co.uk www.blythactivitycentre.co.uk
s t i a w A e s i d a r Pa Honeymoons When your big day is over, there is nothing more enjoyable than knowing you can disappear off to enjoy your well-earned honeymoon. Look at the schedule. Are you going on honeymoon straight after the big day or will you be taking time out before you set off to your dream destination? Are you looking to a far-flung destination or something nearer to home? Relaxed and informal, or action-packed and dramatic? Seasonality is a big checking point. What time of year are you getting married and does this match up with the weather you had in mind for your chosen destination? Just because it is summer here for instance, doesn’t mean it’s going to be a scorcher on the other side of the world. Making a check list and planning early is a good idea, giving you a chance to organise vaccinations or making sure that the name on passport is correct. While there is plenty to think about in planning for the big day itself, remember to put aside time to plan the break at the end of it all. Honeymoon’s do require a certain amount of time and planning but get this right and you’ll make the dream break that will create you perfect memories for years to come.
Tropical blue seas, beautiful white sandy beaches and hot weather are beckoning you from the Indian Ocean. These clusters of paradise islands include many, but the most visited are The Maldives, Seychelles and Mauritius and have been attracting honeymooners and those seeking heaven on earth for many a year.
H
ere at Just Journey we believe that developing the trip by combining a second destination can give your holiday more depth and substance and most importantly, make the trip so much more memorable. With Emirates flying from Birmingham, it couldn’t be easier to create these multi-centre holidays and to include the unique city of Dubai.
This desert city has something for everyone; have supper in the world’s highest restaurant, feel the adrenaline as you bounce through the dunes in a 4x4, or experience the souks (markets) and haggle for gold trinkets and souvenirs.
For those looking for more culture, the island of Sri Lanka is a great choice. Great beaches, history, food and wildlife are all on the agenda in this wonderful destination. Depending on how much or little time you can afford, we can make something special for you. Sri Lanka’s Golden Triangle is a perfect region for explorers. The ruined ancient capital of Anuradhapura with its elaborate palaces, massive monasteries and medieval ruins, make for some excellent exploring and photography opportunities. Climb the historical spectacular rock citadel of Sigiriya, perhaps Sri Lanka’s single most extraordinary sight, to name just a couple.
After all this excitement sit back and enjoy a cup of the finest tea from your balcony, whilst you enjoy the view of the sun setting over the very tea plantation your cup was grown. Now the Indian Ocean calls, from the tiny lagoon islands in the Maldives, the luxury resorts in the Seychelles to the pristine beaches of Mauritius. Enjoy all the luxury and indulgence you can handle, you deserve it! For travel advice, booking and information speak to Just Journey. West Bridgford’s independent travel agency.

Beautiful Brides Sarah Louise’s guide for the bride to be, planning your make-up & pampering in preparation for your big day.
H
aving worked within the bridal make-up and hair industry for over eight years, both as a salon stylist and a self-employed artist, I have come across many brides and bridal parties with similar queries and worries about their wedding day pampering and the timescale leading up to the wedding. All beauty professionals will have their own way of working with each bride to ensure the day is as special as possible. This could be advice on how to apply your own make-up and what products to use for your wedding day, or if you choose to get your make-up done professionally, working with you to find which ‘look’ suits you and your personality best. Here are some helpful tips to consider, from booking your wedding, to the big day itself:
1. Research your ideal make-up artist. Look at a make-up artist’s current work on social media and online portfolios. Take recommendations from people you know who have used particular artists before that you like the style of. You may feel more at ease and have a better peace of mind using beauty professionals that have been recommended to you.
64
There are so many different styles of make-up, so pick someone whose work you like the look of and can imagine yourself with that style on
your wedding day. After all, an intense smoky eye is not everyone’s style. What you consider to be a ‘timeless’ make-up look, that represents you as a person, is essential for you to be happy with your wedding photos in years to come.
2. Book in advance. Most of the time it is best to start looking at your make-up and hair suppliers as soon as you can after booking your wedding, just to check availability. Some will book two years or more in advance, others may not open their diaries until six months before. However, it is important to check with your desired professional to avoid disappointment. It is also very rare to find a wedding supplier who does not take a deposit on booking to secure your date. This is not just as security for the supplier but also for you to ensure your date is safe.
3. ‘The trial run’ I always recommend to my brides they have a trial, even if just for them – this doesn’t have to include the rest of the bridal party unless you feel this is necessary. Although make-up and hair professionals know their timings on the day to ensure the bridal party is ready on time (usually allowing extra time), a strong outline of what is required for each person will help with punctuality on the day and keep your pamper morning as stress free and enjoyable as possible.
My advice for any bride having a trial is to have it at around two to three months before the wedding day. This allows time to gather any final details needed, such as hair accessories and lipstick choices. I also advise that when coming to a trial, the bride brings photos (or selfies) of their usual make-up and hair choices, as well as ideas they like and don’t like. This can instantly give the make-up artist more of a feel for the client’s personality and comfort zones. Bring a select few, or a single trusted friend along to your trial if you wish. Having someone there you know for advice is sometimes helpful. It is however important to bear in mind that it is ‘your day’ and too many conflicting opinions can be more stressful.
4. Wedding make-up starts with your skincare regime at home. At least three to six months prior to your wedding day, begin your skin care regime with products suited to your skin. It is important to work out your skin’s needs and the best way to care for it, to avoid those troublesome breakouts and also give your wedding make-up the lasting power from the outset. If you’re already one step ahead with your skincare routine, why not seek some professional advice on other preparation treatments for the skin such as microdermabrasion or dermaplaning.
sarahlouisemua facebook.com/SarahLouiseMUA www.slhairandmakeup.co.uk
s l a i t n e ss e y a Wedding d A few recommendations to ensure that picture perfect look throughout the whole day. 1. Estee Lauder - ‘The Illuminator’ - Radiant Perfecting Primer & Finisher £26 Primer is essential to prepare the skin for make-up, to keep hydrated and looking radiant throughout the day and to keep make-up on for longer.
2. Laura Mercier- Translucent Setting Powder £29 Setting Powder is essential for keeping make up in place. Laura Mercier is my personal favourite for a natural, long lasting, flawless finish, that doesn’t look cakey.
3. Charlotte Tilbury - Luscious Lip Stick in shade ‘stoned rose’ (online exclusive lip liner and moisturising lipstick duo) £38 Whether you’re getting your make up done professionally or having a go yourself, it is an absolute must to have your lipstick with you to top up for photograph moments, and keep lips looking and feeling soft and moisturised.
4. Urban Decay - ‘All Nighter’ Setting Spray £24 Not only do setting sprays help to keep your make up in place all day, but they are also great for a spritz and refresh at intervals throughout the day.
False eyelashes – are they really essential? My opinion...Yes! Once again it is personal preference depending on your style and comfort zones. However, I always include strip lashes in all of my make-up pricing. Especially on a wedding day. I always explain to brides how it’s important to have ‘stand out features’. Where the bride may not want a lot of eye make-up or a strong bold lip, lashes are a great way of opening up the eyes and making a feature of them, whilst keeping to a minimalist make-up look. If you’ve decided against having your make-up professionally done, why not trial a set of semipermanent lash extensions or ‘Russian lashes’ to take away the stress of applying lashes on the day.

Game On Made met two of the tutors at The School of Artisan Food, men with a passion to inspire and teach, but there’s no playing around when you’re on a mission to put game on the menu.
B
utchery tutors Chris Moorby and Rich Summers are on a mission to tempt people into eating more game meat. Whether it’s woodpigeon, rabbit, hare or venison, it’s game that should be making more of an appearance on our plates according to the pair, who deliver a number of hands on butchery courses at The School of Artisan Food on the Welbeck Estate. They use their individual knowledge of working within the meat industry to pass on their skills at various events and venues across the country, but come together to work as a team at the School throughout the year. Their courses include curing and smoking, BBQ cooking, making your own sausages, beef butchery, British pies – and at this time of year it’s game meat.
68
Their game courses include the popular ‘Game in a Day’, which shows people how to make the most of seasonal British game meat. While the likes of chicken, beef and lamb have established themselves as firm favourites among many, it’s rabbit, pheasant and venison that Chris and Rich would like to see taking up more of the spotlight. And, as Rich explains, it’s about changing people’s view of these meats. “When we talk about game bird breast, for example, we like to get people thinking about it as chicken. Look at the dishes you do now and substitute the chicken in those dishes for pheasant breast or rabbit leg, something like that. “When people start to think about venison, for example, sometimes we’re a little bit limited in our thinking. Just
think of beef or pork, it’s similar to this type of meat. We’re trying to change people’s perception of game, make it more accessible. Venison is also good from a nutritional point of view for instance - it’s high in protein and omega 3s. “It is traditionally seen as a preserve of the wealthy and the aristocracy – accessibility and the seasonality of it can be little bit problematic. However, it can be sourced from reputable butchers and good online retailers.” The pair’s ‘Game in a Day’ course takes people through practical butchery techniques needed to prepare sustainable meats that can be used to create delicious dishes. Those on the course, which takes place on October 7, will learn about various techniques including how to identify the age of game, how to determine the best preparation methods and how to best use offal for pâtés and terrines. “Game is a great food to eat and it really should be used more than it is,” says Chris. Chris explains it is common for people to use the saddle and the haunch (the prime cuts) of venison then chop the rest up to put in a stew – in his opinion, these parts should really be taking centre stage. “It’s these lesser used parts that are chopped up that people can really make better use of. We show people how to make the most of these rather than just the prime cuts.” Much of the game used in their courses is sourced from the Welbeck Estate, including the venison. Catch Chris and Rich on their ‘Game in a Day’ course on October 7 at The School of Artisan Food. Other courses being staged by Chris and Rich include a professional four-day ‘Artisan Charcuterie’ course starting on September 6 which provides in-depth knowledge and practical skills on the processes required to produce charcuterie, including curing and smoking, fermentation and air-drying; ‘Curing and Smoking’ on October 21 and ‘Continental Sausage Making’ on November 10.

Applies better, more ethical efficient approaches to livestock and meat production. East Markham Apple Day East Markham Apple Day, Sun 7 Oct
An Apple a day In a quiet corner of a North Nottinghamshire village, is an orchard that is doing its best to help preserve varieties of old and rare apples.
T
he East Markham Heritage Orchard is the creation of John Hempsall, a retired fruit farmer who bought the land some 25 years ago and then set about planting apple trees in a bid to preserve the old varieties for the new millennium.
Over 20 years the orchard has grown from 50 to over 500 trees, which have been sourced from gardens all over the U.K. and abroad. John is always seeking varieties he has yet to find e.g. Scriveton Pippin a rare Nottinghamshire apple.
Today the orchard is home to more than 300 different vaieties of apple both dessert and culunary - including 13 from across Nottinghamshire. The orchard has varieties of both rare and comon apples all of which are nurtured with the same care and attention and which John prunes himself. John has propogated his own variety Markham Pippin named after the village.
The autumn is a busy time for John with orchard preparation for East Markham Apple Day, when all of the different varieties are on display together with apple identification, tasting sales and PYO. And then on to the Bramley Apple Festival at Southwell where he displays 100 different varieties. He has been involved with the Bramley Apple Festival for the last 10 years and his display is one of the highlights of this annual event which, this year celebrates its 25th anniversary.
John says that varieties that are hundreds of years old such as Bess Pool, King of Pippins Court Pendu Plat, Lamb Seedling and Emperor Alexander, to name but a few, are quite rare and are worth preserving. The Heritage Orchard was launched in 1998 and this year will mark its 20th Anniversary at East Markham Apple Day on Sunday 7th October, with Jon Stirland and Martin Fish and open to the public.
72
The festival is growing from strength to strength and is really busy. This and the East Markham Apple Day are the highlights of their year, John says. Harvest time is obviously a very busy time at the orchard. All the apples are picked and processed into cider locally at East Markham Cider Bewery and marketed as Scrumpy Wasp cider.
V
isitors to this year’s East Markham Apple Day will be able to see more than 300 varieties of the fruit at the event, which this year celebrates its 20th anniversary. The event takes place across the village with the focus on the Heritage Orchard, which was opened in 1998. Visitors will be able to get hold of apple recipes, try apples at the free tasting tables, have the chance to pick their own apples at bargain prices and talk all things apple at a special advice centre. There will also be dozens of applerelated stalls along with gardening and craft stalls. There will be a special cider bar, that will highlight Scrumpy Wasp Cider, which is produced in East Markham itself and refreshments and entertainment throughout the day. The Heritage Orchard, a focal point of the apple festival, was opened in 1998 by well-known gardeners Jon Stirland and Martin Fish – both will be revisiting the orchard to mark the 20 years that have passed since.

Exploring Southwell

Travel writer and photographer Sally Outram tells us the best way to explore Southwell; a market town rich in history with plenty to see, eat and discover. Happy rambling!
T
his is a beautiful and interesting walk, which begins in the heart of Southwell; a small market town in Nottinghamshire, which rivals many, with its idyllic setting and its historical past, it can only be described as a true cultural gem. Centre stage has to be Southwell Minister, it is undoubtedly one of the most magnificent examples of Gothic architecture in the county, and has cathedral status, which was given in 1884. It also boasts one of the finest Norman naves in Europe. The twin ‘Pepper Pot’ towers are absolutely striking and inside there are even more hidden gems; the impressive brass eagle lectern being just one example. It originally belonged to Newstead Abbey, but during the dissolution of the monasteries, was hidden in the lake and was not re-discovered for another 250 years. Auctioned by the 5th Lord Byron, it was obtained for the Minster in 1805. As well as being for quiet contemplation and worship, this wonderful ecclesiastical space is also the heart of the community, holding events, festivals, showcasing art exhibitions, concerts and recitals of differing genres, attracting visitors from all over the world. Southwell is also home of the iconic Bramley apple. The original tree is in a cottage garden on Church Street and is the source of the variety we know today. Loved all over the world, the Bramley apple is celebrated by an annual festival, which is held at the Minster every October. Performers and musicians entertain you as you walk through the streets; it’s very much a community and global event with visitors from around the world taking part in this wonderful celebration of the humble Bramley apple. As you stroll through the town, notice The Saracens Head Hotel, it has a long and rich history dating back to the Norman
Conquest of 1066 and was originally known as the King’s Head. Kings, nobility, legendary writers and poets frequented the inn. It is said that King Charles spent his last night of freedom in the King Charles Suite, before surrendering himself to the Scottish Commissioners at Newark Castle the very next day. Genius writer, Charles Dickens and flamboyant poet, Lord Byron, have also stayed. It is believed too that the hotel has many ghostly goings on, which add to the charm of this unique building. This historic hotel is now family run, and has a super restaurant, with lovely alfresco dining in the attractive courtyard. The town’s Industrial revolution is clearly evident throughout and this walk encapsulates some of that. If you get the opportunity, a visit to The Workhouse is a must. It was built in 1824 and its design set the standards for others in the country. This interesting building takes you on a journey through time where you can follow in the footsteps of the inmates, experience the conditions they endured and take part in interactive events, a place where the past comes to life. There are mill buildings to explore, and the beautifully tranquil River Greet, is an absolute haven for wildlife, with plenty of places to stop and admire all that nature has to offer. This superb walk takes you along part of a disused railway, and is known as the Southwell Trail; popular with both walkers and cyclists. The line opened in 1871, predominantly servicing goods trains and offering only limited passenger services. It finally closed in 1968. Since then it has become a natures paradise, for all to enjoy. One of the best ways to discover and explore this wonderfully pretty, eclectic market town of Southwell, is definitely by foot! So, put on your walking shoes and enjoy!

After a short distance, to the right you will see a super pub, The Final Whistle; the perfect quirky pit stop! It serves a variety of fine ales and is famous for its pork pies! The beer garden is definitely worth a look as it replicates a 1920’s style platform, with original track from the disbanded Southwell line. After enjoying a refreshing pint, continue right along Station Road until you reach the crossroads. 6. Cross straight over and walk along the leafy Burgage Green. To the right is a stone gatehouse, once part of a 19th-century House of Correction. Here turn right into a narrow alleyway, this is called Becher’s Walk. Follow this back to Church Street, turning left where you will return to the car park and Minster opposite. 7.
