Jared Anderson is a regular volunteer at Saved Me Adoption Center. He has been a volunteer there for five months. He has a full-time job and spends his lunch breaks helping out at the rescue. When asked why he volunteers his time at the animal shelter, he spoke about wanting to get another dog himself. His younger dog whom he used to go on walks with suddenly died. Instead of getting a new dog, his wife suggested he volunteer his time and walk the dogs at the shelter. He usually takes the dogs on 10–15-minute walks. He talks to the dogs on their walk to help soothe them and acclimate to the city noises. He has personally seen dogs grow more comfortable with the city nose through the help of many walks. When he walks the dogs, he lets the sniff whatever they want. Since time outside is limited, he lets them have fun.

Sidra Droese has only been with Save Me Adoption Center for a month. She spoke about how she tries to help the dogs acclimate to the city bustle. New dogs are usually nervous in the shelter because there are so many dogs they are constantly barking. Sidra has enjoyed her month working at the shelter so far, she says that it is very rewarding work. She enjoys helping the dogs and working with the other women at the shelter.

The impact of covid on the shelter has been significant. They have seen many dogs come back to the shelter or being returned to the store they bought them at. Since people are going back to work, they have found they cannot care for their animals anymore. Also, some of the animals have separation anxiety, being always with their owners and then being left alone has impacted the dogs.

Devan Kluver puts a new collar on Tillman in Saved Me Adoption Center, 2609 Federal St Philadelphia, PA 19146, on Tuesday, April 12. He and his sister Marabelle also arrived that morning from Georgia. Both are super shut down and learning to trust humans. It’s clear they had a rough start to life, and we can’t wait to see them come out of their shell.

The shelter usually gets a shipment of dogs once a week. They receive dogs from AACT Philly when their shelter gets too full or from down south. On those days they have to get their vaccinations and microchips. On the right, Marcy is getting a vaccine in the top photo and getting checked for a microchip in the bottom photo. Sunday is a big transport day, where they send their dogs in the shelter to stores, foster care or to be adopted. They send their clammer quitter dogs to Doggy Style Pet, a pet store they work with. They usually get adopted quickly there.

In the mornings they clean out the kennels. Middle of the day they try and get the dogs out on a walk at least twice a day. They clean the kennels again during the closing shift and make sure everything is set up for the next day. When there is downtime they do laundry, wash the blankets and sheets in the dog kennels, and check to see if the dogs need more water. They also write notes on the glass of the kennel to remind workers and volunteers of an illness they may have. The rescue received some new dogs that had heartworms. If they suspect a dog may be sick, they will test them to ensure they treat them correctly.

Clyde (L) is a male one-year-old retriever/mix standing next to Audrey (R), a one-year-old female bull/mix at Saved Me Adoption Center, on Tuesday, April 12. They are enjoying the outdoor section next to the Saved Me Adoption Center. They arrived that morning from Georgia after spending nearly a year kenneled at one of the vet clinics down there. There is such a lack of adoption interest in the southern states that some dogs will just live their lives being boarded somewhere because there are simply no adopters in the area. That’s why we bring them up here where there are hundreds of interested adopters looking to add a new family member to their home. Spring 2022 11

Saved Me Adoption Center has a piece of land right next to them where the dogs can run around freely. On warm days, they fill up the pool and try and get the dogs to take a dip. Kurt is dipping his head in the pool to get a treat that they have placed in there at Saved Me Adoption Center, 2609 Federal St Philadelphia, PA 19146, on Tuesday, April 12. Kurt is their longest-term resident and has been with Saved Me since November 2020. He has had no interest and gets any applications, but they are all patiently waiting because they know his home is out there somewhere. He’s a very good boy who just wants to run and chase tennis balls all day. He’s a staff and volunteer favorite. He loves people and is super friendly. All he wants is to play with his toys and take naps. They are hoping someone will step up for him soon.
