BHM Bridge

The bridge is named after a civil rights activist who worked to build personal bridges between Boston’s diverse communities. Compared to all other bridges in Boston, this one is extremely innovative and ahead of its time. It stands as a symbol of the same characteristics the client embodies in their daily culture:

Bold Color

The initial color inspiration derives from the reflection of light off of the bridge at night. The color was translated into the space to purposefully align with the three different space divisions. Green symbolizes discovery and growth. orange symbolizes energy and optimism, while salmon symbolizes innovation and deep thought.

PlanningNeeds

Public, Clinical & Staff

MPHC is driven by creating a safe environment for those who need affordable healthcare. They need a space that can be broken up into three different groups: public, clinical and staff. This division of space is to protect the privacy of those coming in for treatment.

SpacePlanning

The adjacency diagram was used in the planning phase to echo back to the client that we understood how important their division of space was, while also supplying all three sectors with accessibility to each other. The diagrams were mainly used to decide what the most efficient method of planning would be to respectably fit everyone into the building.

Reception

The reception space was designed to be very welcoming and calming. This was achieved through the use of natural materials, double-height space and greenery. Guests are greeted at an accessible reception desk, and then have the choice to sit throughout three different waiting areas all equipted with varying options of seating and activities for children.

CoffeeBar

Desert Roast Co. was founded by two Arizona natives who dedicated their lives to travelling and coffee. They were able to continue traveling while owning a coffee shop by creating a space that is runbythe consumer. This was accomplished by designing a service counter with selfserve coldbrewdispensers, alongside a wall of 20+ syrup dispensers, and self checkout.

DetailStudy

Creating a custom millwork piece was essential to meeting the client's needs for their self-serve coffee bar.

Roose Row puts a self service spin on your average wine bar. The planning of the area was centered around the consumer being able to walk up, pour them selves a glass of

Client Family of Four

Family of four trying to navigate the post-pandemic world. The goal is to design a space where both parents can be productively working from home while two young children are also taking school from home. They also have the addition of one grandmother living in the basement.

SpacePlanning

The adjacency diagram was used in the planning phase to ensure all necessary rooms the client wanted would fit into the final design. It was also used to play around with space adjacencies to determine the best layout for the family. The final design solutions consists of a public entry level floor, and the other two levels being more private for the family.

FloorPlans

Located on Pine Street, which is now nationally registered as a historic district of California, sits the three story project site.

StudyNook

The study nook accommodates for the family's postpandemic needs by providing a space that children can do online schooling from while parents are working, cooking or relaxing in the adjacent rooms.

SpacePlanning

The four-story historical site had many design elements worth celebrating and restoring. The space planning was carefully designed to allow for views and places of interest to be enhanced. The addition of the central circulation element in the courtyard allowed for additional views out to these historical elements, as well as a view out to the city of Phoenix on the lookout deck.

Concept

While working with a historical site, we wanted the design concept to reinforce the idea of being rooted in Phoenix. We found that the Desert Fairy Duster plant historically grew on the project site before the building was built. We resonated with the plant as it stands as a reminder of the history of Phoenix, and the building. The building features Italian gothic style architectural elements, and the plants colors are also found within Italian gothic style architecture.
