I want to achieve a piece of work which highlights:

Leaf Cuttings A theme and technique I decided to develop further. I wanted to focus on the idea of a journey the leaf takes.

Snow Experiments After the snow fell I tested out using it as a medium. People often write and draw on sand and so I thought about testing this in the snow. 1. I found an animal’s footsteps which had been dotted around the garden and decided to test out drawing the outline of the animal. 2. An experiment to see how text would form in the snow. 3. Markings left behind by other people. 4. A larger illustration of an individual snow flake. 2.

Knightshayes Court I decided to create an illustrative piece of work which also worked with type. So I decided to design a type of sign/ plaque to represent a national trust property which worked hard on a plant conservation scheme. I took into consideration the type of property this was and created my design to reflect this style.
The Large Blue I took another topic from the National trust and decided to create a small leaflet/ page for a magazine advert.
I started by first illustrating the butterfly by using a graphics tablet and then illustrating a map and where in the country the species could be found. I then worked on putting the page layout together.
Animal Cut Outs Going back to the theme of animal conservation and the disappearance of animals, I decided to create a cut out which would show a silhouette/outline of an animal (which does or used to live in the environment). I tested this in the day and night to test the different effects of sunlight and artificial.
The Badger Article I took an article from the guardian newspaper, about planned culls of Badgers to reduce the risk from TB. I wanted to use my illustration in a specific context and felt this would be a good starting off point. This is my first attempt to the article. I soon realised that the image didn’t reflect the article well enough.
The Badger Article I started to rethink what I needed to do for the imagery and text to relate. I started by sketching ideas and making the original image darker as well as producing more material. I also used a found shotgun pellet to work with my illustrations.
The Badger Article After playing around with layouts this was my finished piece. I also adjusted the type and made the title bigger and more eye catching.
The Grant Museum of Zoology I went for a visit to this museum which had a big collection of animals and bones (some which are even extinct). I decided to do quick five minuet sketches of objects. I found this quite hard to do but felt it was a good exercise to do.
The Big Garden Birdwatch I wanted to create a piece of work, using my style of illustration to make people aware of a Bird watch which takes part every year in the UK. It is a way of tracking and keeping count of birds in different areas and migration patterns. After illustrating the bird I decided to use the text they had already created for the website. I wanted the poster to link in with the website (where you could download sheets and also enter the viewings).
The Big Garden Birdwatch RSPB Above shows my pen illustrations developing into watercolour. I wanted to bring some more colour into my work. This was my second design for the bird watch. I am a lot happier with this poster design. I feel it is more eye catching and direct. It is also important to include the RSPB logo as it is recognized. I tried to link the logo and the type on the poster so they would work together.
Bird Illustration I started to research further into the effects humans have on the planet and wildlife. The effect of litter on animal is a huge issue around the world. I started sketching out how this affects birds. I then thought about how I could use lino animals and portray them when caught in litter.
Sea Gull - Lino Print I wanted to create a lino of a bird which I could then take further and show it being caught in rubbish. A lot of waste is washed up on beaches as well as on land. I also wanted to create an animal which is on a larger scale like this sea gull.

An image I took at the beach of fishing wire and nets which could hurt animals. I don’t feel this image is a strong as it is not the physical cut out. I tested the image in a poster format for ‘Global Ocean’.
Mussel shells Litter along the coast also affects species of plants and other animals. I collected these shells and also collected rubbish I had found on the beach. I wanted to create something 3D which would reflect the message that litter left and washed up can affect wildlife.
Once they were completed I decided to take the back to their environment and photograph them as a set. I then wanted to use them to create a poster, which would be unusual and eye catching.
Hedgehog lino Cutting
Hedgehog lino Cutting Hedgehogs are disappearing and the causes do not seem to be known only theories. I started by producing a simple lino and then photographing. I then thought about creating a worm lino (4 in total) to represent the types of food hedgehogs eat.
Poster designs Two designs for the British Hedgehog Preservation Society. I wanted to highlight the disappearance of hedgehogs and making people aware. I decided to create two speech bubbles out of lino so it seems like the hedgehogs where speaking. I was happy with both designs but the second one is to reflect an ash heap and it trying to communicate that people should check a bonfire before lighting. I feel this message is not conveyed strongly enough.
Interactive information I thought about creating an information popup/interactive book. My aim was to make people aware of how to care for a hedgehog if found in your garden. My first image was to show that you should never feed a hedgehog milk as it makes them ill, and so the image slides up to reveal the correct thing to do.
My next slide was to show that it would be silly to pick up a hedgehog in need with bare hands. Thick garden gloves would be more sensible.
Ill and abandoned hedgehogs can often be affected when the weather starts to get cold, before hibernation. If they are found they should be wrapped in a towel onto of a hot water bottle.
Overall Analysis of the Pop-up Book I really like how this design interacts, and feel it was a good test to do. I think it would work well as a mini book. But I feel there are some technical issues, such as how it fits together and the neatness of the design. For this to work I think that it would have to be printed onto stronger paper/card. So that the movement works better and is not stiff to pull out or put back in. To make to design work better: I would need to use type to explain the story and design a few more layouts to make it a book.
Barn Owl Lino
Barn Owl Lino A full size cutting of an owl. Barn owls are quite rear and have been declining over the years. After reading about a scheme to encourage owls to survive I decided to create a piece of work in relation. Farmers are being encouraged to leave patches of their land untouched and not farmed to encourage a variety of species such as voles which owls then hunt. Owls go back to the same breading/ nesting grounds every year and so when farm land changes (hunting areas and nesting) the owls will not stay in that area. The new scheme is called Conservation Grade. I decided to test out illustration with the print first to see how I could illustrate different surrounds with the same print. I will extend this print by adding colour and also testing out colour with the lino.
I tested out an article design. But feel the image is too large and looks more like a poster. This is something I am working on further now to develop. But I was happy with lino cutting images I captured on farmland areas.
A few further tests of photographing and using the speech bubble idea again.
Screen Print I recently tested out a new technique of screen printing. This processes allows you to draw directly onto the screen with a special solution, Instead of exposing an image. I tested a mixture of colours. I do not feel this process allows you to illustrate in the same way especially as you used a paint brush and so on a smaller image it is hard to show any detail as you could with a pen. I am glad I tested this process but am not sure whether I will use it further with this project.

On the left shows a mind map of my next ideas and take the hedgehog ideas further. In the next week I will be creating more prints for this particular species, and experimenting with the narrative. Above shows my timetable, I feel I will have more of a direction after another week. After completing my next task I will have a more precise view of where this will be going. I feel that it is the right time to now narrow down on a particular species and to start researching and finalising and finished product.
