A man walks into a local shop on Madeline Island and asks, “Is this a floating island or is it attached?” The speechless owner quickly recovers her wits and replies, “It floats, which is handy when we want to move it down south for the winter.” Whether true tale or island myth, the story points out the obvious (or not so obvious to some!) relationship between Madeline Island and Lake Superior. In the words of that old Frank Sinatra song “Love and Marriage,” You can’t have one without the other! Many of us love this island and this lake, which is why we choose to live, own property or simply enjoy our vacations here. But what makes this lake so superior?
It’s vast, containing ten percent of all the fresh water on Earth and is the largest lake in the world by surface area. If you stretched the shoreline of Lake Superior out to a straight line, it would be long enough to reach from Duluth to the Bahamas.
It holds a lot, containing as much water as all the other Great Lakes combined (plus three extra Lake Eries!). There is enough water in Lake Superior to cover all of North and South America with water one foot deep. It also hosts nearly 80 different types of fish. It’s deep, with an average depth of 483 feet. The deepest point is 1,333 feet. It’s clean, with underwater visibility of 27 feet, making it the cleanest and clearest of the Great Lakes. (continued on page 12)

Island Magic: A Billion Years in the Making There are 22 islands in the archipelago, 21 of which make up the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore. Madeline Island is the only island on which there is a small town, La Pointe established in 1834. Today about 250 residents reside year-round on the island and during the summer months the population swells to around 2500 people. Madeline Island bridges the gap between wilderness of the islands and the “creature comforts of modern civilization.” exploring the living quarters and tool sheds of the The geology of the Apostle Islands dates back more In 1855 the Sault Ste. The sand feels like silk on your feet and squeaks a tune while under foot. Bring a picnic lunch and enjoy some beach time! The natural splendor of the islands and geological wonders are prominent on Madeline Island as well. At Big Bay State Park, the Point hiking trail leads you to cliffs above sea caves made of ancient sandstone. The State Park offers more than nine miles of trails, several scenic picnic areas and many breathtaking views of Lake Superior. The 1.5 mile beach between the State and Town
Park rivals Julian Bay. Nestled in the trees along the beach is a boardwalk over fragile plant life and foliage, which also offers glimpses of Big Bay lagoon. Adv-Vac offers half day kayak tours from the Town Park to the sea caves and cliffs of Big Bay State Park. Tandem (2 person) kayaks make it an effortless, smooth paddle. During the tour, you can get out of your kayak to climb around the rocks and explore. Depending upon the time of year, some people like to snorkel the sea caves, cliffs and rocky outcroppings. Whether it be the awe of mother nature’s beautiful red sandstone, the escape of a pristine beach or the imagination of a life style living off the resources of the islands; your experience in these islands will be one you never forget.

More Ways to Play on the Island Families with younger children will want to explore the Madeline Island Historical Museum up the hill from the Ferry Dock. History unfolds at the museum in displays describing Native American life, the fur trade and arrival of missionaries, 19th century fishing, logging, brownstone mining and local maritime lore. A lively musical slide show introduces the visitor to the “Story that is Madeline Island.” The gift shop offers books, crafts and jewelry and gifts rooted in the island’s history. When the water beckons, kayaks and canoes are an obvious answer. To rent a canoe, paddle or rowboat at Big Bay Town Park lagoon, call Bog Lake Outfitters at (715) 747-2685. When you’re ready for a bigger adventure, consider paddle boarding, kayaking, snorkeling or scuba diving. Experienced guides and all the equipment you’ll need for any of these activities are available through Adventure Vacations (visit www.Adv-Vac.com or call 715-747-2100). If you prefer a less strenuous water-based outing, consider a sailboat cruise offered by Animaashi Sailing Company or Catchun-Sun Charters. Boat tours and fishing excursions also are available through Adventure Vacations. Golfers will appreciate the Madeline Island Golf Club (MadelineIslandGolf.com), which features an 18-hole, Scottish links-style course designed by Robert Trent Jones, Sr. Huge double greens add a new dimension to your golfing experience.
If you’re up for a hike, check out the trails. With trailheads on two of the island’s main arterial roads, The Capser Trail is a step into the lush and majestic interior of the island within walking distance of downtown and the ferry. This familyfriendly gravel trail winds through the woods, starting at about one-third mile from the ferry on Big Bay Road and ends about one mile up Middle Road.
Inline skating fans should plan to be on the island on Saturday June 15th for the 4th Annual Apostle Island Inline Marathon. ~6~

Creative people have long been drawn to beautiful, wild places so it’s no wonder that dozens of artists have chosen to live and create their art amid the inspiring natural splendor of Lake Superior and Madeline Island. This is good news for visitors who enjoy seeing art — as well as those who may be looking for a special souvenir, memorable gift or fine art to display at home or in their island retreats. Madeline Island is replete with high-quality, locally created oil, watercolor and pastel paintings, sculptures, woodcarvings, clay works, candles, handmade jewelry, rugs, shawls and greeting cards. You can even find an island-based childrens books written by a local writer.
Bell Street Gallery — A “Must See” Art Destination Bell Street Gallery features more than 40 local and regional professional artists who create one-of-the-kind handmade artwork. New visitors to the gallery typically say “WOW!” upon entering this visual paradise. A former turn-of-the-century fishing shack has been restored and expanded to become Bell Street Gallery. Check out the outdoor pottery garden where you can meet artists, watch pottery demos, see paint fly onto canvas, catch local music or share a glass of wine next to the wood-fired bread oven. The outside sign that promotes “Art made fresh daily” means featured artists change weekly and you should check in regularly. At Bell Street Gallery you will find a special wedding, birthday or thank you gift, including amazing hand made jewelry. Fine wall paintings in all media and styles fill the walls, and wearable art (such as scarves, leather bags and clothing) are in the Garden Boutique. Bell Street also offers glass, wood and metal sculptures that dazzle the eye, as well as pottery that’s whimsical, functional and provocative. Friendly and welcoming staff is on hand to assist you in the selection process, shipping, installing and hanging of your fine art discovery. To find Bell Street Gallery look for the bright colored flags on the corner of Bell Street and set back from Middle Road. The gallery is across the street from Tom’s Burned Down Café, and behind the Island Market. Open daily with evening hours Wednesday through Saturday allows for a leisurely stroll before or after dinner.
Find the Magic Island Carvers Chris Thompson and Ken Peterson opened the doors of their studio/gallery in 2005 and the wood chips have been flying ever since. Chris primarily spends her time in the studio carving magical fairy creatures and gnomes, which allows Ken to venture outdoors to transform ordinary stumps of wood into interesting and popular sculptures with only the use of a chainsaw for his artistry. Check out his live chainsaw sculpting demonstrations every Saturday between 1:00–3:00 pm during July and August (weather and wedding dependent.)
Art with Heart Many island artists lack private gallery or studio space. Happily, that’s not a problem thanks to the generosity and foresight of former St. John’s United Church of Christ on Madeline Island pastor Otto Schroedel, his wife Velma and island resident Tom Woods. The three teamed up, along with island residents who provided free labor, to build and open Woods Hall in 1955.
Gallery Hours: Mon.–Tues. 11am–5pm Wed.–Sat. 12pm–7pm Sunday 11am–2pm
All of our artwork is handmade. The materials and artists’ creative process are clearly visible: from a potter’s thumbprint to a painter’s brushstrokes to the finely crafted silver of a piece of jewelry. These are the things that make each piece of artwork special and offer a tangible connection to the artist who created it.

Today, Woods Hall is a thriving community ministry providing a creative outlet for all islanders and visitors who want to make useful art. In addition to providing weaving and pottery studios, Woods Halls operates a sales outlet for the crafts during the summer. A percentage of the profits funds the cost of operating Woods Hall with the rest going to the artisans. Woods Hall is the place to visit if you’re looking for a unique hand woven rag rug or a wide variety of clay pots and artistic objects. Handmade jewelry, polished rocks and candles also tempt visitors. Woods Hall is next to St. Johns United Church of Christ across from Joni’s Beach in downtown La Pointe.

Madeline Island School of the Arts Madeline Island School of the Arts (MISA) is an important part of the vibrant Island art community. It supports the local artisans and business community and attracts instructors and artists from all over the country. This facility within the Apostle Islands is special because there is unlimited inspiration for all artists who come here. Opportunities for plein air painting and nature photography abound, and equally writers and quilters flourish in the serenity of our unique location. The school offers five-day workshops for adults in writing, painting, quilting, photography, yoga and other genres May through October.
Testimonials from teachers and students capture the magical experience you will find here. “The school has incredible grounds blanketed with flower filled meadows and trees that recess in layers upon layers. There are plenty of options for relaxing, dining and sleeping on the island: from luxurious to basic. Visitors who are interested in renting a cabin or lake home should check with the Inn on Madeline Island or Madeline Island Vacations — both represent dozens of rental properties. (See www.MadelineIsland.com for helpful links.) Before you make your selection, think about what you want to do here. For folks who just want to get away from it all, lodging further away from town offers a quiet nature experience. Families with young children or teenagers might be more interested in housing closer to downtown, where they can bike into town to enjoy ice cream from Grampa Tony’s after dinner, splash around at the Inn’s pool (pool use is free for anyone who rents a property through their office or available to all for a small fee), play tennis, or just hang with friends down by the dock. Other options for accommodations include camping at either the Big Bay Town Park or Big Bay State Park, and several comfortable motels including the Island Inn just across from the Ferry Dock. A word to the wise: make your reservations as early as possible. Madeline Island is an extremely popular summer vacation destination, particularly during the Fourth of July holiday! Memories of a Superior Lake (continued from page 1)
It’s powerful. There have been about 350 shipwrecks recorded in Lake Superior, including the infamous Edmund Fitzgerald. The biggest wave ever recorded was 31 feet high. Staggering statistics aside, Lake Superior leaves all other lakes in the proverbial dust for another, more compelling reason: it’s our lake. Like a beloved, feisty (and occasionally temperamental) grandfather, it compels us to return every year like far-flung family members returning to the ancestral home to celebrate, play, rest and come back to our collective senses. The first time my husband and I visited, as casual tourists seeking a restful weekend, we knew we were home after experiencing the brilliant full moonlight reflecting off the lake near the south shore. We literally had to pull off the road, stop the car, and stare in silent reverence. Suddenly we felt wondrously alive in that moment as sky, water and moon seemed to melt into eternity before our dazzled eyes. In the many years that we’ve been coming home to Madeline Island since then we have compiled a cornucopia of other lake-related memories, many of them by accident.

Celebration
We’ve laughed and occasionally cried with friends and family (with the lake as our silent witness), forgotten our troubles while collecting and climbing on beach rocks, and planned our future while strolling the familiar sandy shores hand-in-hand like the middleaged married couple we’ve become during our many years together here.

But no matter how many times it happens, climbing aboard the ferry in Bayfield after the long drive from St. Paul, we always drink in the beauty as if for the first time, and we allow this Superior Lake to once again cast its magic spell.

Once we happened upon a dozen young Amish couples sitting quietly upon the sand at sunset — each strategically spaced about 30 feet apart from the couple to their left and right — shyly staring together at the lake and softly talking. Another time we observed (from a respectful distance) as a lovely young couple exchanged marriage vows in the formal presence of family and friends in the gentle pink twilight at Town La Pointe Center for the Arts Park Beach. Last summer we were entertained by a passing yacht transporting a lively informal band playing patriotic tunes on a hot Fourth of July afternoon down by the marina. And many times we’ve watched dozens of white sailboats lazily drift about the lake like impressionistic subjects on their way into a
Summer Solstice
We’ve also watched our once skinny little boys build castles in the sand and now marvel at the strong young men they’ve become as they skip stones across the water. And we’ve “oohed” and “aahed” with family and friends as fireworks brilliantly exploded over the water down by the Beach Club, where we shared our leftover bread with eager ducks earlier that same day.
