This residential project for the Hay residence in Oxford, Georgia was completed in November 2018. I served as the project manager for the duration of the project, from the conceptual design process through sitework, masonry and planting installation.

The clients’ final deliverables included: conceptual renderings and sketches, a comprehensive planting plan, hardscape and sitework plan, landscape lighting plan, and complete construction details. Our design intent was a complete garden renovation on this farm property, which included replacing many of the overgrown, crowded and improperly selected existing plantings that surrounded the exterior foundation. We desired a clean, comfortable scale to open up the gardens and to allow the plants to complement the elegant simplicity of the architecture.

We provided site entry and parking concepts, and eventually decided upon a pea gravel parking court with reclaimed antique cobblestone banding and aprons to complement the farm setting. We softened and concealed the existing rear parking area with a fragrant tea olive hedge. The pool garden received a perennial garden for cut flowers, as well as new buffer plantings and the addition of climbing roses along the pool fence for privacy. The rear courtyard undewent a major renovation, with the partial demo of an existing brick terrace and relocation of a number of massive boxwoods that had outgrown their home. We replaced the solid brick terrace and extended access to the pool garden with brick “step-pads”, allowing for planted joints to soften the hardscape. The existing lawn was in poor shape due to excessive water pooling in this garden after heavy rains. Our solution was to implement an effective “french drain” lawn drainage system beneath the sod. A crisp Korean Boxwood hedge was installed to contain new garden plantings. The final touch was an 1800’s Limestone trough fountain, paired with an antique weathered granite post which holds a custom designed bronze spout. I hand-sourced these unique masonry elements and coordinated with subcontractors to install with proper plumbing.

The Martin residence in Chattanooga, Tennessee, is a beautiful historic home that underwent a complete architectural and site renovation. The client requested the addition of a swimming pool, therefore we had the unusual and exciting opportunity to design a pool garden in the front of the home. Because of the site’s gentle sloping lawn and the addition of a masonry retaining wall, the fninshed pool was nearly undetectable from the street. New Oak trees, drifts of Azalea and Hydrangeas, and climbing roses on the stone wall and helped to lend privacy while concealing the pool from street view. A panel of Zoysia lawn surrounds the pool coping to soften the surrounding hardscape. I created the preliminary conceptual renderings and inspiraton imagery, and assisted with the design of the smaller rear courtyard garden. I also helped to create the final planting plan documentation and worked with our landscape installation crew to select flowers and perennials for the cutting garden surrounding the pool. PRINT DATE

The Berry residence in Atlanta, Georgia, is a charming brick colonial style home. The clients had a deep appreciation for classic architecture and requested a garden renovation to allow for outdoor entertainment and relaxation. The client’s existing concrete driveway was in poor condition and was replaced with a crushed angular gravel drive with a brick apron and edging to match the exterior of the home. We extended and replaced existing retaining walls in the back to allow for a larger garden off the garage and motorcourt. This section includes an elegant lawn panel, perennial garden for cut flowers, and space to accommodate a future “garden folly” inspired potting shed. I assisted in the production of custom Iron tuteurs to support climbing roses in the cut flower garden. I also designed a cedar garden gate in keeping with colonial style millwork. The final outcome of the rear garden was a feeling of HAY RESIDENCE CARSON MCELHENEY being enclosed in a quiet and contemplative “garden room”.

This project was a design I helped to envision during my internship at the Vine Garden Market in Saint Simon’s Island. The site originally was a 1930’s bungalow home that was reinvented as a charming boutique hotel located centrally in the historic Pier Village area. This design called for new plantings and site furniture that complement the historic character of the hotel, while lending an eclectic feel to its intimate, enclosed spaces. The new design includes a bocce court, updated custom signage, a new pool and spa, and interesting site furniture. 26 27

OTHER WORK: BOTANICAL & PLANTING DESIGN

During my time interning for The Vine on Saint Simon’s Island, I had the opportunity to design and install creative container plantings and botanical compositions for clients. To this day, I continue to create montly orchid and moss installations for CMLA’s conference room. I also create 30+ planted arrangements with amaryllis, orchids and moss annually as holiday “Thank You” gifts to cherished clients. I’ve also had the opportunity to assist with planting selection and layout for cut flower and kitchen gardens during my time at CMLA. This detailed, hands-on type of work is immensely gratifying, and I cherish having this creative outlet.

VEGETABLE POTAGER GARDEN : I managed the design and installation of these Fieldstone masonry be for a client in Buckhead. The client’s family loved to cook and desired a kitchen garden they could use throughout the year. I designed the planting layout, which included winter vegetables such as cabbage, kale, ornamental lettuces, fennel, chives, nasturtium, and creeping herbs. Bamboo tuteurs were also added for growing beans and tomatoes later in the season. The client later decided to add cut flowers to this mix; I researched compatible pairings of flowers and vegetables, and we filled the garden with pockets of Dahlias, Mexican Sunflowers, strawberries, and more.
