Modernist™ Guide to Sheffield, is a printed guide featuring a selection of the best local modernist architecture from the 50s and 60s. Over 30+ listings including Park Hill, Moor Street Substation and the Arts Tower show Sheffield to be a mecca for fans of modernist architecture and design. We are delighted to launch this guide at Park Hill on Sat 13 / June 15.00 — 17 .00. There will be a talk by Emma England, Regional Director of RIBA Yorkshire. Copies of the guide will be available to buy. The city of Sheffield embraced the excitement and architectural optimism of the fifties and sixties. It planned and built new revolutionary social housing and architectural developments that invested heavily in a vision for a brave future. Modernism isn’t one style; many different 20th century styles can be characterised as Modernist, but they all can be seen to share certain core objectives: a belief that design and technology could transform society through innovation and planning; a move away from historical references and applied ornament; a preference for abstraction and minimalism. Each guide has a large A2 map that showcases the sites where modernism took root and developed. The Sheffield Guide is a collaboration between MADE NORTH, the RIBA and The Designers Republic™.

In 1965 one of the most ambitious and effective information design projects was launched in Britain. The British Road Sign appeared on our streets for the very first time 50 years ago and has occupied an important role in our lives ever since, from instructing us where to go and a safe speed to travel at, to making us aware of any hazards or road works. The signs designed by Jock Kinneir and Margaret Calvert standardised the road network, creating many of the signs we see today and produced two new typefaces: Transport and Motorway. The signage system was launched in 1965 and to celebrate its 50th anniversary we are planning a series of events that connect the north and south of England in 2015. To mark this 50th anniversary we are inviting leading British artists and designers to transform the familiar circle, triangle and square signs. Invited collaborators can create their own content for the signs developing concepts that evolve from current signs’ function of instructing people of speed limits and directions to poetically disrupting our everyday with designs that make us stop, look and think about design and our environment in a slightly different way; less instructions and more pauses for thought.

12

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

We wanted the project to link the North and South of England and so we plan to install a selection of the collaborative signs at MADE NORTH Gallery and in the city during Sheffield Design Week. We are also working with the Design Museum on a launch event for the project during London Design Festival, when a larger collection of signs will be displayed across London. In the 19th century, the city of Sheffield was referred to as ‘one great workshop’. The network of factories in Sheffield shaped the physical, social and economic landscape of the city. The past, present and future of Sheffield’s industries, large and small, is tied to changing relations with energy in the workplace. The Future Works strand of the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) project, Stories of Change, based at the School of Architecture, University of Sheffield, aims to uncover stories about the relationship between energy, industry and landscape in the English Midlands. One Great Workshop will focus on the stories of Sheffield and include a design exhibition and range of events.

Home or Hospital? — How will the design of health technology integrate within our homes? -----------------------------------------------------------------------------An ageing population and pressure on health and social care capacity are driving demand for the design of innovative solutions to support independence at home for people living with long term conditions and disability. Assistive technologies are increasingly proposed as one such solution. Healthcare that previously has resided within the hospital is now extending into our home. The workshop will explore how this might be integrated into our every day life and within our personal home space.

Using Design to Improve the Experience of Work -----------------------------------------------------------------------------UK employers are under pressure to respond to challenging and rapidly changing business conditions. One dimension of that pressure is around talent attraction and retention. Becoming an employer of choice is the order of the day. We contend that using design to develop the physical asset of workspace - into a talent-attractive strategic tool for growth - is a smart investment. Research from the UK Design Council reinforces this. They found that for every £1 invested in design, businesses can expect a four-fold return in profit. Work settings designed to improve the experience of work will delight, inspire, stimulate, and engage. They have become diverse landscapes populated with user-defined work tools. Interactive neighbourhoods support different user preferences and varied activities of work. Dale Office delivers compliant, thoughtfully designed interiors for companies going through change. Fingers firmly on the pulse of the future of work, we live and breathe office design. These talks are for anybody interested in improving workplace effectiveness. In particular, how that relates to employee engagement, innovation and the future of work. It’s your chance to ask our team any burning workspacerelated questions you may have. We look forward to welcoming you into our space and sharing our best thinking on using design to improve the experience of work.

Jefferson Sheard Memorial Talk — Bryan Jefferson -----------------------------------------------------------------------------As part of Sheffield Design Week and in conjunction with the launch of the Modernist Guide to Sheffield, Tom Rhys Jones of Jefferson Sheard Architects will be giving a talk on the life and work of their founder and former RIBA President, Bryan Jefferson. Jefferson was born in Sheffield in 1928 and, following the death of his father in the first blitz on the city, was sent to be educated at Lady Manners School, Bakewell before studying architecture at the University of Sheffield. Upon graduation he joined the new practice set up in Derby by the distinguished Irish architect Major Sam Morrison before being sent back home to open the practice’s Sheffield office. The Sheffield venture metamorphosed via Morrison Partners and Jefferson into Jefferson and Partners and, by 1957, with the arrival of Jefferson’s friend and fellow alumnus Gerald (Gerry) Sheard, into Jefferson Sheard and Partners. Early commissions included a series of private houses in the Huddersfield area - something of a hotspot for progressive residential design at that time with Peter Womersley’s Farnley Hey having been recently completed - but Jefferson’s bigger opportunities arose back in Sheffield where post-war reconstruction and a radical remodelling of the city was gathering momentum. Perhaps the most enduring - and, certainly, the most talked-about - of Jefferson’s major buildings was one of the first, the immaculately detailed Brutalist behemoth of an electricity substation commissioned by the CEGB in the early 60s. Commended in the 1968 Financial Times Architectural Awards and statutorily Listed Grade II in 2013, this is one of Sheffield’s best-known landmarks, floodlit by the Council in 2010 and greatly loved or reviled despite a large part of the citizenry having no idea what goes on within! The switching-on of the floodlighting was the occasion of Jefferson’s last official visit to his home city and an abiding memory is of him signing copies of the artist Jonathan Wilkinson’s specially commissioned painting of the building whilst surrounded by a new generation of admirers eager to meet its creator.

No less starkly dramatic, but less visible, was another grittily utilitarian public work, the City Council’s Olive Grove depot, displaying a similarly skilful touch in its detailing, following which the practice embarked on a series of less muscular but still elegantly nonsense-free developments such as a Cinema and Entertainment complex on Pond Street (known to subsequent generations of Sheffielders as the Fiesta, Roxy or O2), offices for the Amalgamated Union of Engineering Workers (now the AEU) and for Eagle Star and the Probation Service. — Excerpt from Bryan Jefferson’s obituary written by Tom Rhys Jones, published in the AJ and RIBA Journal in 2014. ------Jefferson Sheard is a leading team of architects working out of offices in Sheffield, London, Peterborough and Manchester. With almost 60 years’ experience of working in sectors as diverse as retail, education, transport and healthcare, the practice puts creative ideas to great use where they improve space and the experience of space users, balancing form and function; technically excellent and design conscious in equal measure. www.jeffersonsheard.com -----------------------

This is an experimental form of product design. Concerned with identity — mine, yours, theirs, its individually, collectively, socially. Exploring duality and alternative function through narrative, metaphor, surprise, invention disinformation. Provocative and playful. This exhibition has been created by Darren Richardson, Artist/Designer based at Yorkshire Artspace. He says about the work: “The work invites active engagement, seeking to undermine complacent attitudes: the possibility of the improbable. This is an expression of my disillusionment with… product design entwined with consumerism, advertising, and over-production, democracy and the continuation of government… institutional practice.” Set within the context of design for health, prosthetic possibility is a promotion of emotional and physical wellbeing. A dialogue, a pathway to salvation, it represents the beginning of a strategy of extraordinary design.

Peter & Paul are working with Heeley Development Trust to launch a campaign to raise money to maintain & improve the Heeley Park. Peter & Paul have teamed up with NORMA & Heeley & Meersbrook Woodcraft Folk, as together we wanted to give the Heeley People’s Park a proper launch & something real. We’re using our collective skills to design & build a Heeley Shed to be used by the People’s Park and owned by the people! We’re launching the shed at the Heeley Festival, 20th June, so come & check it out. The Heeley People’s Park is a beautiful community run park with some big plans. They want to raise funds for a permanent stage, for more places to play, boulder and bike, relax and gather. But these are things they can only achieve if we all get together and give. In fact, if we don’t all give, residents and businesses alike, we lose it altogether - just keeping the park as it is costs £45,000 each year. That’s a very lean £1.23 per square metre per year, making Heeley People’s Park one of the most efficient parks in this city. But if we want more for this place, we have to make more.

Creative Enterprise ------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Anthony’s story — I left school at 16 with a place at art college which I wasn’t able to take – it just wasn’t what happened on a Leeds council estate in the 1980s. I was apprenticed as an engineer, then got into joinery and worked in London for many years. I finally enrolled at Leeds college of Art in 2000 to study furniture design. In early 2010 I took the plunge and created my first range of bespoke furniture. My pieces are usually in plywood, using intense colours and contrasting shapes. I also have a range of affordable, accessible designs for the home and hospitality markets. We have restored and refurbished what was once a dilapidated old building in Haworth, to create Damside Mill, a fully-equipped studio with space to host regular studio classes and showcase our products. The Creative Industry Finance programme was an opportunity to really build the business. Exhibitions are a real catalyst for our sales, offering great exposure to the design world. The first loan enabled us to grow our exposure internationally. Recognition that we are a valuable and sustainable business is important to us. Sustainability was crucial when Damside caught fire just when we’d got it all up and running. We lost all our work but we started again and brought it back to life. As a result, I reassessed the way I produce furniture and I’ve been able to significantly increase my capacity to deliver more pieces in a year and the quality is probably even higher now. Working again with Creative Industry Finance is helping us to move to the next level again. We’re now purchasing the Mill, consolidating our product range, reaching out to new retail partners and taking stronger steps overseas with new marketing and an invitation only design fair in Shanghai on the cards for early 2016. Eames — The Architect and the Painter ------------------------------------The husband-and-wife team of Charles and Ray Eames are widely regarded as America’s most important designers. Synopsis — Perhaps best remembered for their midcentury plywood and fiberglass furniture, the Eames Office also created a mind-bending variety of other products, from splints for wounded military during World War II, to photography, interiors, multi-media exhibits, graphics, games, films and toys. But their personal lives and influence on significant events in American life - from the development of modernism, to the rise of the computer age - has been less widely understood. Narrated by James Franco, Eames: The Architect and the Painter is the first film since their death dedicated to these creative geniuses and their work. The film uses extensive interviews to frame the story. There are eight subjects, including Richard Saul Wurman, the founder of TED, Irish architect Kevin Roche, and screenwriter Paul Schrader; Lucia Eames and Eames Demetrios, Charles Eames’ daughter and grandson; and three former Eames office designers: Jeannine Oppewall, Gordon Ashby, and Deborah Sussman.

A user’s guide to the modern world according to Jacques Tati. The films of comic genius Jacques Tati take us on a tour of modern life, pitting Monsieur Hulot against the cities, buildings, cars, trains, furniture and gadgets that define our era. Synopsis — Playtime is French director Jacques Tati’s fourth major film, and generally considered to be his most daring film. It was shot from 1964 through 1967 and released in 1967. Jacques Tati’s gloriously choreographed, nearly wordless comedies about confusion in an age of high technology reached their apotheosis with PlayTime. For this monumental achievement, a nearly three-year-long, bank-breaking production, Tati again thrust the lovably old-fashioned Monsieur Hulot, along with a host of other lost souls, into a baffling modern world, this time Paris. With every inch of its superwide frame crammed with hilarity and inventiveness, PlayTime is a lasting record of a modern era tiptoeing on the edge of oblivion. To make the film, Tati built his own Paris. He and architect Eugëne Roman created a minimetropolis at Saint-Maurice, to the south-east of the capital. It was no ordinary film set: it contained two steel and concrete buildings, its own power plant, tarmacked streets and working traffic lights, plus several towering trompe l’oeil facades. Many factors contributed to the difficult two-year shoot, which began in October 1964: bad weather destroying part of the set, Tati’s perfectionism and tendency to reshoot, and financial problems that necessitated the prime minister, Georges Pompidou, intervening to rescue the production. Koyaanisqatsi

--------------------------------------Koyaanisqatsi contrasts the tranquil beauty of nature with the frenzied hum of contemporary urban society Synopsis — Drawing its title from the Hopi word meaning ‘life out of balance,’ this renowned documentary reveals how humanity has grown apart from nature. Featuring extensive footage of natural landscapes and elemental forces, the film gives way to many scenes of modern civilization and technology. Given its lack of narration and dialogue, the production makes its points solely through imagery and music, with many scenes either slowed down or sped up for dramatic effect. Prepare to experience a truly remarkable film, a cinematic masterpiece so extraordinary that it regales the senses, stimulates the mind and actually ‘redefines the potential of filmmaking’ (The Hollywood Reporter). Celebrated director Godfrey Reggio, innovative cinematographer Ron Fricke and Golden Globe-winning composer Philip Glass have created a ‘spellbinding [film] so rich in beauty and detail that with each viewing it becomes a new and different film’ (Leonard Maltin), ‘Koyaanisqatsi contrasts the tranquil beauty of nature with the frenzied hum of contemporary urban society. Uniting breathtaking imagery with a hauntingly evocative, award-winning score, it is original and fascinating’ (People) ‘One of the greatest films of all time’ (Uncut). Design is One

In 1965 Massimo brought the Helvetica typeface to the U.S. Notable projects include: New York’s subway signage and maps; the interior of Saint Peter’s Church at Citicorp Center; Venini lamps; Heller dinnerware; furniture for Poltrona Frau; and identity programs for Knoll International, Bloomingdales, Saks Fifth Avenue, Ford, and American Airlines. Synopsis — Italian-born Lella and Massimo Vignelli are among the world’s most influential designers. The work covers such a broad spectrum that one could say the Vignellis are known by everyone, even by those who don’t know their names. Throughout their career, their motto has been, ‘If you can’t find it, design it.’ Their achievements in industrial and product design, graphic and publication design, corporate identity programs, architectural graphics, and exhibition, interior, and furniture design have earned worldwide respect and numerous national and international awards for over 40 years. Leaders on the frontline of the design profession, the Vignellis continue to be mentors to other designers. Their archive is being housed in a new building - The Vignelli Center for Design Studies at the Rochester Institute of Technology, which will enable future generations to appreciate the Vignellis’ contributions. Many from the world of design - from architects Richard Meier and Peter Eisenman to graphic designers Milton Glaser, Michael Bierut, and Jessica Helfand, among others speak about the Vignellis’ work and tell us anecdotes. The film brings us into the work and everyday moments of the Vignellis’ world, capturing their intelligence and creativity, as well as their humanity, warmth, and humor. Session #3

Made You Look — Screening

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------Made You Look is a documentary about the UK DIY graphic arts scene of the 21st century. Via candid interviews with top British creatives, publishers and agency owners we explore the fact that more people than ever seem to be turning to analogue means of creating things, even though we are living at the height of the digital era. Hear the Director speak about his reasons for making the film. ------------------------------

Synopsis — The last 15 years has seen a boom in the UK graphic arts and illustration industry, with a DIY scene emerging and prospering alongside new and affordable leaps in technology. So much of our lives is now spent in the virtual digital realm, so what will become of the tactile objects we all hold so dear? Will we see books disappear in our lifetime? And why are more and more creatives moving away from the computer and getting back to using their hands to create art, both commercially and for art’s sake. Made You Look is a documentary which sets out to explore the landscape of the commercial arts in the 21st Century. It’s a film that gives an insight into how modern creative people feel about the challenges and triumphs of living in a hyper digital age. This film is a rare and candid insight into the work of some of the UK’s top creative talent, including beautifully shot footage of artists at work and play in their own creative environments. madeyoulookdoc.co.uk @lookandyes -----------

Assemble champion a working practice that is interdependent and collaborative, seeking to actively involve the public as both participant and collaborator in the on-going realisation of the work.

Gian Luca Amadei (Session Host, Design Programme Manager, British Council) ------------

Holly Jayne Smith (Fashion Designer)

Holly Jayne Smith’s works take its inspiration from people and human nature. She has an interest in human psychology within social environs, specifically related to how an individual’s descision making is influenced by their immediate surroundings and shaped by pre-conceived ideas. These themes are conveyed within highly coloured, adapted sportswear silhouettes that overpower the body. Intricate panelling, cut-outs and lighthearted details are combined with a free use of intense yet harmonious colour pallets and print design to create her signature aesthetic.

How important is it for designers and architects to experience a different environment or cultural context? Can being exposed to a different design community have an impact on their practice, influence their design methodologies and stir their creative instinct? Designers who have recently participated in British Council residencies reflect on their experiences overseas and explore how these opportunities have influenced their practices. The session will be followed by a panel discussion and will also provide an opportunity for designers wishing to apply for residencies run by the British Council’s Architecture Design Fashion department in various countries including Brazil, Iceland and Morocco. -----------
