LYOPHILIZATION The lyophilization process is where perishable food or material is frozen and the water found in the material is sublimated – changing from a solid sate to a gas state without ever entering a liquid state. The water vapor is then removed, the

material

is

lighter,

more

stable, and can be stored easier. Another term for the process is freeze-drying, or cryodesiccation.


DATA LOGGERS To monitor and validate the temperature data during the lyophilization process, the user must have a logger that can record in ultra-low temperatures. For most lyophilization applications, the data logger being used should include a temperature sensor or probe that is long, thin and flexible for easy manipulation and vial insertion.

The harsh temperatures that a lyophilization data logger must record in can cause its sensors to eventually become less precise and need recalibration. Data loggers must be calibrated regularly to keep your recording values

accurate. When you first receive your product, look for the calibration certificate to confirm the date of the calibration and make note of the date when the next calibration is recommended. Another important factor is the manufacturer’s warranty, and if made available, the extended warranty. Check this out to know what is covered and what is not, should something happen to
