YEAR II REDESIGNING BUS TERMINUS AT BADAMI, KARNATAKA THE DESIGN AIM WAS TO REDESIGN THE EXISTING BUS TERMINUS AT BADAMI, KARNATAKA.

BADAMI CAVES ARE A PART OF UNESCO DESIGNATED WORLD HERITAGE SITE CANDIDATE UNDER THE TITLE “EVOLUTION OF TEMPLE ARCHITECTURE- AIHOLE-BADAMI-PATTADAKAL” AND AN UPCOMING TOURIST ATTRACTION. HENCE TO MAKE THE CITY OF BADAMI MORE INVITING, IT WAS PROPOSED TO REDESIGN THE EXISTING BUS TERMINUS EQUIPPED WITH ALL THE NECESSARY FACILITIES. THE MAIN AIM WHILE DESIGNING THE BUS TERMINUS WAS TO MINIMIZE CLASHES OF PEDESTRIAN, VEHICULAR AND BUS TRACKS SO THAT SMOOTH MOVEMENT OCCURS AROUND THE TERMINUS.

ELEVATION WAITING AREA DISTRIBUTED ON LOWER GROUND AND GROUND FLOOR FOR TRAVELERS WHO HAVE BUSES IMMEDIATELY AND WHO HAVE TO WAIT LONGER FOR THEIR BUSES.

PARKING FOR FOUR WHEELERS AND TWO WHEELERS

A DROP OFF IS PROVIDED FOR TRAVELERS IN FRONT OF THE MAIN ENTRY. THE BUS MOVEMENT IS PROVIDED ALONG THE PERIPHERY OF THE SITE TO AVOID INTERSECTION OF BUS AND PEDESTRIAN MOVEMENT AND CAUSING ACCIDENTS.

THE MAIN PEDESTRIAN ENTRY IS PROVIDED ON THE GROUND FLOOR. THE CONTOUR DROP OF SITE FROM THE POINT OF ENTRY TO THE END OF SITE IS 5 METERS WHICH WAS USED AS AN ADVANTAGE TO CREATE THE LOWER GROUND FLOOR FROM WHERE BUSES ARE BOARDED

HERITAGE INTERPRETATION CENTER FOR RANI KI VAV, PATAN MAIN CONCEPTS USED: Ÿ AXIAL PLANNING Ÿ TELESCOPIC VIEWS

EVOLUTION OF FORM

DESIGN PROJECT

AXIAL PLANNING RANI KI VAV IS AXIALLY PLANNED. ONE MAJOR AXIS DIVIDES THE VAV INTO 2 MIRRORED PARTS.

Propose an interpretation center as a prelude to the city of patan and rani ki vav creating awareness among tourists about the UNESCO world heritage site.

TELESCOPIC VIEWS THESE CAN BE OBSERVED IN RANI KI VAV. VAV IS DIVIDED INTO 7 LEVELS AND FROM EVERY LEVEL FRAMED BY THE PILLARED PAVILIONS, A CARVING OF SHESHASHAYI-VISHNU, IN WHICH VISHNU RECLINES ON THE THOUSAND-HOODED SERPENT SHESHA, WHERE IT IS SAID HE RESTS IN THE INFINITY BETWEEN AGES IS SEEN.

THE CENTRAL COURTYARD HAS A DECAGONAL COLUMN WHICH WILL HAVE CARVINGS OF ALL THE TEN INCARNATIONS OF VISHNU (DASHAVATARS) ON EACH OF IT’S FACE, WHICH IS CENTER OF BOTH THE VISUAL AXES.

THE FOLLOWING FORM IS SEEN EXTENSIVELY IN THE CARVINGS OF RANI NI VAV AND USED IN PATOLA DESIGNS (FOR WHICH PATAN IS FAMOUS).

TOWARDS RANI KI VAV AV ROOMS AMPHITHEATER

THE COURTYARD IS SURROUNDED BY 16 COLUMNS EACH DEPICTING APSARAS ADORNING THEMSELVES (SOLAH SHRINGAR). EXPERIENTIAL ZONE
