BECAK N G A B E A N ISSUES Yogyakarta is one of the biggest tourist destinations in Indonesia. There is a big amount of tourist with private vehicles such as bus and cars, and this brings disadvantage to the city. It causes pollutions and traďŹƒc jams. This also brings disadvantages to becak kayuh community. Becak kayuh is Yogyakarta traditional transportation that has become a part of the city culture. Sadly, the traditional becak kayuh are nearly extinct because they lose to the escalating amount of private vehicles. Becak drivers are struggling to get customers every day.

PROBLEM SOLVING The idea is to create a system within a place that will directly create a positive impact: proďŹ ted the becak kayuh community and gradually reduce the use of vehicles. The place will be a becak community center and bus terminal integrated with public space and tourist attraction. The integration intended to providing proper space for the community to develop, while also targeting the people that use the parking lot and terminal as their customer. The design will gradually change the parking lot into public space with three stages: introduction, seduction, and acquisition. The design hopefully will accommodate the community while proďŹ ted the city, culture, and society.

TRAINING AND EDUCATION CENTER ISSUES

Government work style are commonly known as rigid, and so does the environment. The new study found that collaboration could increase the overall work quality. In order to enhance collaboration, a certain space and place need to be designed accordingly.

PROBLEM SOLVING

To overcome the problems, collaboration needs to be happen. Co-working spaces will be the place to collaborate. Each co - working spaces need to be integrated. Innercourt will be the design core and integrations between each co-working spaces.

DESIGN STRATEGY

The design will accomodate collaborations with bunch of co - workking spaces inďŹ ll into the building. This co - working space expected to be fulll with activities such as meetings, group discuccions, also group training. The location of each coworking spaces design to have indirect contact with outside and the innercourt. Innercourt would be the core of the design and green spaces.

E(ART)H ISSUES & PROBLEM SOLVING

The project started with the thought of relationship between choreography and architecture. Choreography are one of the form of art that contain movement. Architecture are where the movement take place. We found that architecture in Burkina Faso mainly use earth blocks as it main material. That's where the idea came : the further relation between earth, art, and architecture. We want to create an architecture choreography, a guided sequences of spatial experiences through building compositions.

DESIGN STRATEGY

There is a desirable issues about this project to be a catalyst of change and change construction pattern. We decided to go with curved massing in order to solved both issues. The form itself are standout, dierent, yet with the earth blocks material, it still have the Burkina Faso identity and locality. The ow of the new building consider the existing, without too many demolition of existing Green Amphitheater. Instead, we emphasize the existing vegetation to support the concept of natural elements. We separate the Labo, Work, and Show area based on existing conditions. The circulations are create so the visitor could feel the spatial experiences between natural elements and building thoroughly.

It’s risen up several problems : overpopulation, land subsidence, flood, and lack of clean water.

PROBLEM SOLVING In addition to the intangible problems that have been mentioned above, indirectly these problems also have an impact on people's lives through health aspects that tend to be not good for the physical and mental aspects. For example the lack of clean water can cause disease, as well as the efforts needed to obtain clean water by buying and spending a lot of money, become social problem for some of the citizens. So, what is the fundamental element as a solution to these problems? How was the condition of old Jakarta and its people? How did those people deal with the problems in the past? REVIVING JAKARTA AQUATIC ECO

Country: Indonesia City: Jakarta

Jakarta is one of the capital city which classified as a metropolitan city. As the center of economic sector and Indonesia government, Jakarta ignites the process of urbanization. The urbanization that occurs raise urban problems and life necessities, where it is also overlap with the natural conditions and geomorphology Jakarta.

WATER PRESERVATION AS IMPULSE Water are required to support biodiversity. Without sufficient water, stresses on specieses and decrease the number of biodiversity (UNESCO, 2019). Water could be recycled but not replaced. That’s why we need to preserve it more. Water cycle are heavily influenced by the ecosystem. Ecosystem are one of the aspects of biodiversity. The problem about water and ecosystem are both real in Jakarta. Growing population and rapid urbanization affects on water quality.

OVERPOPULATION Based on data from BPS 2018, the population of DKI Jakarta in 2019 is projected to reach 10.5 million. This figure increased by 0.73% from the projected population in 2018 of 10.4 million people. While in 2025, the population projection says that there will be 11.033.969 (BNPB and BPS). This indicates an increase of life necessities including the use of land and space. If Jakarta is densely full of people and their needs, how to deal with the remaining natural conditions?

GOALS : INCREASING BIODIVERSITY

LAND SUBSIDENCE In geological context, land subsidence will be naturally occur in Jakarta through a long period of time (hundred years). However, this situation is accelerated by human factors, it does make change in topography component and land surface height decrease faster 25 cm per year (Sukmandaru Prihatmoko, Head of Ikatan Ahli Geologi Indonesia based on the research done by geodetic team from Institut Teknologi Bandung)

There are four aspects of biodiversity : ecosystem, species, genetic, and functional. The more diverse those aspects, the higher biodiversity could get. The biggest aspects from all of this is ecosystem, because more ecosystem means there will be more habitat to various species. That’s why in our design, we choose water as impuls because water are required to support biodiversity. The strategy of water preservation brings new ecosystem and increase the number of biodiversity.

FLOOD Geomorphologically, the majority of Jakarta land is formed by the results of fluvial process, and is located in the northern part of Java Island. So that these conditions make the Jakarta area vulnerable to the dangers of meteorological hydro, especially floods. Jakarta is a lowland area with an average height of 7m above sea level. In flood-prone areas, to handle floods, there is a provision of early warning system and the flood itself will be sucked with pipe. The height of the flood varies from 50 cm - 2 m.

CLEAN WATER The availability of clean water in Jakarta is facing a crisis time due to overtake but minimal conservation. This is also one of the factor which causes land subsidence. In some areas in Jakarta such as West Jakarta and North Jakarta, the condition can be worse where in the dry season there is a scarcity of clean water. (Tempo, 2019)

BIODIVERSITY INDEX based on singapore index

Besides the four aspects of biodiversity, there’s biodiversity index applied in Singapore in a form of regulations. We take some part of it to be implemented in our design. We will evaluate our design from this index and aspects in order to increase the biodiversity. We hope that Jakarta could restorized their biodiversity and be a nature-friendly city.

THEN, HOW? In addition to the intangible problems that have been mentioned above, indirectly these problems also have an impact on people's lives through health aspects that tend to be not good for the physical and mental aspects. What happens if we go back there?

WET LAND

KAMPUNG MARUNDA : Accumulate, Spread, Restore Located in Cilincing district, North Jakarta, the site is a wetland area (marshes) in Kampung Marunda. This area is known for its difficulty of clean water access especially in dry season. Clean water, which is supplied by PAM has slow flow rate and each houses should/would buy clean water from (carts seller berapa liter gitu per hari). This area is also a lowland that is often affected by tidal floods. The wetland condition is surrounded by densely populated settlements with the character of a close, populist community. Marunda village itself has a strong historical value because it is notable as Kampung Si Pitung (local hero).

BIODIVERSITY BEFORE The existing area is an empty land which turns into wetland area filled with wild-growing plants. The water tends to be brackish due to the location in lowland, closed to the sea, and periodic tidal floods.

Public Space The high density and lack of adequate open space for the community encouraged the idea of creating public spaces that were integrated with constructed wetlands. Public space in the form of nodes located on the pedestrian path as part of the wetland park is designed with selected vegetation as an urban forest which functions as water absorption while maintaining air temperature to create cool micro climate so the public spaces can be use comfortably.

CAFETARIA AND CO-WORKING SPACE ISSUES When children enter school, they will be placed in large classes and forced to interact with each other. Adults tend to label children who don't talk much, telling them how quiet and shy the child is. Entering the next stage of education, children will be encouraged to join in group activities, even though this method is not an ideal learning method for some children. Even though it has a good purpose, this method makes the child suggest that their innate character — introvert — is not a good character.

PROBLEM SOLVING Environmental pollution problems: air, water, soil, noise, radiation, light and heat, damaging our environment, both in the short term and in the future. This problem is a crucial problem that is expected to be resolved by green building, as a response to futuristic (future) issues. Green buildings are buildings whose design, construction, and operation reduce and eliminate negative impacts and generate positive impacts on nature and the environment. There are 4 main elements in green building, namely materials, energy, water, and health in order to achieve sustainable building.

But these business and industrial activities somehow has triggered urbanization and giving impact on the emergence of slums and social inequality. And side from the social aspect, those activities combined with the lack of infrastructure in the form of water bodies and green areas in the city also triggers high environmental temperatures (urban heat island/UHI) and pollution, that makes it one of the hottest city in Indonesia.

WATER FEATUR

PROBLEM SOLVING The proposal design is River Spine, a building relocation project for slum inhabitats in Surabaya which maximizes green land and water features in high-rise mixed-use buildings. Water features manifested in the form of falling rain inside the building, reservoir and capillary pipes which has a function to lower the meso climate temperature in order to overcome UHI. Falling rain is the adaptation of river which built vertically. We try to interpret river because it is mostly found in the slum environment, used as the source for washing, bath, etc, and has become identity.

BUILT PROJECT

GERIATRIC UNIT REDESIGN of Dr. Soerojo Mental Hospital ISSUES Dr. Soerojo Mental Hospital is one of the oldest mental hospitals in Indonesia. This hospital known as the biggest and one of the best asylum in Indonesia. Nonetheless, the geriatric unit of Dr. Soerojo Mental Hospital still needs a lot of improvement. There are deficiencies both in terms of environmental quality and completeness of the facility. For this reason, redesign is needed as a solution to the problem.

DESIGN STRATEGY

The right approach for this design is milieu therapy, which is the process of manipulating the environment to become a healing environment. In the preparation process the authors found three main problems that became the basis of this design: 1) How the geriatric unit development strategy within the context of redesign, 2) How to apply milieu therapy in the context of redesign, 3) How to apply milieu therapy in optimizing the function of the geriatric unit . The concept used in this design is "Home for All" which refers to the milieu therapy approach. The ultimate goal is to manipulate the environment so that it feels like home. This is caused by the atmosphere of the house is a form of the right environment for healing elderly psychiatric patients. Concepts are raised in various aspects, from zoning in design to interior and landscape design and arrangement.

TWIRL TOWER ISSUES

This project located in central city of Jakarta. We challenged to design a highrise building with oďŹƒce as typology. There is no particular problem or issues, because the real challenge is we have to use computational design are as our design approach. In that case, we are obligated to use rhinoceros and grasshopper as our main software in this project.

PROBLEM SOLVING

We choose one particular problem to solved : sun heat. We want to respond the sun movement so the building mass and shading are particulary designed to respond the local climate. We simulate the sun movement and insert the data of local climate for one year in order to have the average number of radiation for the building surface.

DESIGN STRATEGY

After we got all the numbers, we design the shading according to the data. Surfaces with higher sun radiation are coded with red color, and the less radiation coded with blue color. We designed the shading density according to the color code. Higher radiation surface will have more density to block the sunlight.

AR-RAHMAN MOSQUE ISSUES

The 2018 earthquake in Lombok has affected so many people in Lombok. Many public facilities has terribly collapsed. This happened with the public mosque of Guntur Macan, Gunung Sari, West Lombok, NTB. The mosque that build in 2015 are collpased due to the earthquake, and people are in need of new mosque.

PROBLEM SOLVING

The mosque are located in between the neighborhood. The site area aren’t too big, so we have to maximizing the site capacity. With the building area of 324 m², it can accomodate around 100 people inside. Another request from the people there, this building need to be completed in a short time, due to the activity.

DESIGN STRATEGY

We decided to make it simple : a steel structure with fabricated grc wall. The design concept are brought by the owner and we try our best to executed it well with careful planning. With the help of people, this mosque construction was start in September 2019 and finished in April 2020.
