About Shangri

When Madison Academy o something for their school to write something that could embody the energy and enthusiasm of their students and staff.

Having taught at the school and worked with the teachers before made this task fairly easy. When I approach writing music I am always thinking about how it will feel to perform the piece I am writing. It is this connection that I think brings me closer to the audience and the players.

The word Shangri-La is associated with a place of paradise, and this song describes a place that I used to go to everyday when I lived in New Orleans. It was not a place of luxury or abundance but rather a quiet place of contemplation. Friends would gather there throughout the day, during work breaks, and in the evening. Occasionally you would have Shangri La to yourself and you could take in the peaceful tranquility. There was one wise old man who lived there whom you could talk with about anything. This Shangri-La was very close to the Mississippi River and when it was quiet you could hear giant cargo ships passing in the water.

know a place under a canopy

The birds fly high and the grass smells sweet t’s a place you won’t read about f you want me to, I’ll show you the route

The wind blows air, pure to breathe You will see

Night comes Ships gliding past Night sky flickering with birds and bats

Nothing here to fear

But wait! What's that in the shadows?

I think I see it grinning at me

It's just a cat

I know a place under a canopy

In this place you can forget your worries

Fresh fruit trees grow under the canopy Playing bocce ball on the green grass

Laughing with the moon that shines above Giving darkness light

There's a place under the canopy A place you might think ‘it can not be’ ‘What’s this place?’ ‘Can it be?’

Shangri-La. It can be It is Shangri-La
