COURSE WORK

TEXTILES FOR APPAREL Course Description

Three hours lecture. Two hours laboratory. Basic and intermediate study of fibers, yarns, fabic structure, dyes, color application and finishes. Factors influencing selection, appearance, and care/serviceability. Testing textiles for apparel.

Course Project

Using a type fabric, create a storyboard on Illustrator that reflects a future design. Utilizing necessary materials, design a garment that will be sustainable for the chosen fabric. This design can be hand drawn, painted, or created on Illustrator. After creating the design, create a clothing brand and care label for the garment.

“The Crowning Moment”

The storyboard reflects “the crowning moment” with pictures chosen from Miss USA winners and Sherri Hill couture gowns. I chose these images because I wanted to create an evening gown with tafetta fabric.

The Crowning Moment M. Taylor Couture ‘95

mtcouture@yahoo.com

The garment I created on Illustrator features a sweetheart neckline with Swarovski crystal beading on the bodice, an overskirt, and a mermaid fitted skirt made with tafetta fabric. I researched the taffeta fabric, and created a care label for the “M. Taylor Couture” evening gown.

VISUAL MERCHANDISING Course Description

Two hours lecture. Two hours laboratory. Principles of window and interior display, individual and group participation in designing and executing displays for commercial and educational purposes.

Course Project

Create a Belk lab space on Visual Retailing software. This lab space will be utilized by future Fashion Merchandising students in Moore Hall. The lab space must include the following fixtures: fitting rooms, 4-way and 2-way racks, shelving, and a cash wrap. The merchandise must come from the Belk website and rendered into the Visual Retailing software. Flooring, walls, and lighting costs will need to be presented to give a realistic view of the cost of the lab space.

There are two departments for the lab space to utilize both men and women apparel, accessories, and shoes. Each department has 4-way and 2-way racks, shelving, floor racks, a cash wrap, a TV, a wall shelving unit, and a table set.

The departments also have one fitting room and sitting area for the customers. These fixtures were chosen because students will be able to merchandise a variety of different fixtures.

This is an overhead view of the lab space that my group created. An overhead view allows the space between each fixture to be seen. This space in between fixtures is for handicap accessibility. To the right of the overhead view are 3 images. These 3 swatches include a hardwood flooring swatch, an accent wall brick swatch and a paint color swatch for the walls.

This image is the 4 different views of the lab space. A cash wrap view gives a perspective of the employee which is important for surveillance of the lab. Two different views from the men’s and women’s department which allows a better perspective of the types of merchandise included in the lab. Then, a right side view is included to give a perspective of a customer’s point of view of the lab.

SELF-DIRECTED PROJECTS

I created this quilt using a sewing machine, and a basic block quilt pattern. I sourced fabrics that were muted, and added a poppy red accent to add a pop of color. This quilt is 12 x 15, and was machine quilted.

I created this window display was at R. Tabb & Co. in Starkville, Mississippi as a free-lance project. I used 5.5 x 12 boards to create the swings that were used to display items such as purses and shoes. Each dress form was styled for the spring 2017 season.
