colorado house
The project in colorado is one of a series of houses in different climatic zones designed for the same client, an olympic artist FRoM THE 20TH CENTURY specializing in athletic illustration and photography. volumes are derived from using two dimensional silhouettes of athletes to define three dimentional space by subtracting the extruded silhouettes from a rectangular volume. the result creates strange moments where figural and orthagonal intersections occur. the project is represented in a way that reinforces the interplay between 2d and 3d through it’s use of silhouettes, and by rendering the house in elevation, visually flattening its appearance. the project also suggestS scalar ambiguity by misusing human silhouettes at the building scale, and is graphically represented with objects, textures, and contexts being displaced.

CALIFORNIA HOUSE
THE PROJECT IS ALSO APART OF A SERIES OF HOUSES DESIGNED FOR AN OLYYMPIC ARCHITECT PROMINENT IN THE 1920’S, THIS ONE IN CALIFORNIA. THE HOUSE REFERENCES THE CLIENT’S INTEREST IN THE CURVATURE OF THE HUMAN FIGURE BY BEING ORGANIZED IN PLAN BY FIVE CIRCLES THAT ACT AS HINGE JOINTS, CONNECTING THE ENTIRE HOUSE TOGETHER AND MAKING UP THE ENTRY FOYER, KITCHEN, DINING ROOM, AND TWO BEDROOMS. CIRCLES AND OTHER CURVED FIGURES ARE USED TO ERADICATED STRAIGHT LINES IN THE HOUSE TO FURTHER EMPHASIZE THAT ARTIST’S FLUID PAINTING STYLE. EACH CIRCULAR ROOM HAS A LARGE THREE DIMENSIONAL WINDOW ORIENTED TO PROVIDE OPTIMUM LIGHTING AT APPROPRIATE TIMES OF THE DAY, AND EACH ROOM IS SITUATED AROUND A BELOW GRADE COURTYARD TO PROVIDE SHADE TO THE OUTDOOR SPACE. BY KEEPING THE ENTRANCE VOLUME OPEN, THE COURTYARD UTILIZES CROSS VENTILATION TO HELP REMAIN COOL IN HOTTER MONTHS.

florida HOUSE
The project off the coast of florida is also one of the series of houses in different climatic zones designed for an olympic artist. the house is composed of an exterior sheLl that provides shade and shelter from rain, and a seperate interior structure that supports the walls of the house. the shell is derived from the exhaustion of linear geometric elements characteristic of art deco ornamentation, resulting in the articulated surface of the shell also serving as its structure. since the shell is only comprised of a single module of timber, it forces scale to be read through the proximity of linear elements as opposed to the width of individual timber members. the shell also provides a buffer from weather and sun shading.

synthetic stratum chair the vmodern furniture design competition entry explores digitally reinterpreting the notion of stratum, the layers of sediment that compose rock. instead of using sediment type to distinguish layers, the chair defines layers in side elevation with pre-existing obects. each layer is composed of a single object that is replicated, manipulated, and booleaned. since each layer uses a different object, layers of the chair ARE DEFINED by the different formal properties of each individual object, similar to how layers of stratum are defined by different sediment properties. from front elevation and top plan the chair inverts this method of layer division by using solid lines to divide an otherwise continuous formal condition.
SCIENCE ISLAND - MFGA
The Competition entry completed by the team at Mark Foster Gage ARchitects is for a science and innovation center in kaunas, lithuania. The project is designed as a picturesque cluster of rectangular volumes connected by an equally irregular ground condition. each volume is articulated by manipulating fractal geometry produced in part using mri software. it pioneers the use of new technology in architectural design and the potential for the authoritative application of near infinite levels of articulation with fractals in architecture. The entry was awarded one of five honorable mentions in the international competition, the only team recognized from the united states.

sweeps - t4t lab
sweeeps is apart of the t4t lab with guest professor adam fure and in collaboration with Ricardo gonzalez, abby stock, and julia pena into the nature of figure and mundanaity. figures are derived from baroque floorplans and aluminum window profiles, diminishing the figure’s symbolic importance and resulting in its ontological flattening. the exhaustion of a mundane opperation like the orthographic filleted sweep creates a surface condition of paradoxical complexity making the origin of the figure difficult to track. The figures only become recognizable when the objects are cut orthographically via plan or section, capturing a moment of the figure in flux, leading to a redefining of the sweep as a digital brushstroke that diagrams the digital existence of the figure.

object redux - t4t lab The objects are individual work completed as preliminary studies for the t4t lab with adam fure that investigate various digital techniques. the first reinterprests the process of stitching to create strange intersections between digital textures. another uses photogrametry to 3d scan earbuds as a base for creating objects that can be read as biologically alien or unnaturally canyoness. the final object explores the definition of a hypercube, which is a 4d object that exists in multiple three dimensional states at the same time. It overlays multiple 3d “views of a hypercube, and is repclicated and arranged into the same hypercube shape at a larger scale, using a geometric principle of fractals to further index exploratory geometry.
FASHION PAVILIONS
The project in Houston, TX is for a commercial PAVILION AND A show room pavilion designed for Vivienne Westwood. Both are created USING CONTRASTING diagramatic processes, with one designed through the analog transgression of plans of the Gwathmey Residence, and the other designed through the digital translation of a Vivienne Westwood dress. The PAVILIONS explore the ambiguity between 2D and 3D. The analog pavilion IS designed axonometrically, applying a two dimensional drawing technique three dimensionally. The flat linear pattern of the project adds to it’s 2D appearance, and originates from the pattern of the diagrammed dress. The digital pavilion indexes the other by using spherical volumes that manifest as circles in plan and section.

light tower for sherlock
the tower for is for a popular fictional detective well known for his personality quirks and unmatched deduction skills. the tower provides a consultation space for clients, a lab to conduct analysis and experiments, and a room for introverted use with a view to the subterranean entry path below. the design stems from juxtaposing complexity and simplicity, relating to the logical process the detective uses to unravel difficult cases. The faceted skeletal structure is derived from the traditional use of thread on image boards used to make connections in cases. the building’s red hue at the base along with the path’s curveature resemble a smoking pipe, an icon of the sherlock holmes stories. the black tower blends into the surrounding landscape, mimicing sherlock’s studies in urban camoflauge.

floating food market
the project is a collaboration with nikki o’donnell IN the floating village of chong kneas in cambodia. the structure uses a base of barrels held together with wood trusses to create a buoyant frame. The building’s structure exploits the stability and rigidity of triangular geometry to create a structurally stable building that is cost effective by using less material. The building is accessible on all four sides by boat, the most common method of travel in the village. It provides two floors for vendors to sell and store various food items. by having open airflow on all four sides, the building provides needed ventilation to comfortably operate the market.

ninja training circuit
the project is apart of a studio effort to design a facility for a group of ninjas. each individual project has a designed landscape with a river and a sacred tree, and contains a path, an excercise mechanism, a meditation space, and a sleeping quarters for one of the ninjas. this project uses axial pathways and vertical hierarcy to empasize importance of the meditation tower. the REPEATED LINEAR ELEMENTS OF THE tower FUNCTION AS A LADDER THAT TERMINATES AT MAIN MEDITATION SPACE overlooking the sacred tree. the excercise apparatus operates by a ninja pushing a lever connected to a gear below the floor, which turns a gear connected to the bottom of the meditation tower, allowing the ninja to alter the direction the tower is facing. the sleeping quarters uses a wall of shutters to provide flexibibility IN ITS LEVEL OF ENCLOSURE.

The BOX ABSTRACTS the overhanging roof plane AND LINEAR ROOF ELEMENTS TO CREATE A CENTRAL CORNER CONDITION THAT BEGINES TO ORGANIZE THE REST OF THE BOX SPACIALLY. THE 3 PALE RECTANGULAR PANELS ARE DERIVED FROM THE PATH ALON THE EXTERIOR OF THE HOUSE, AND ARE COMOSED AS AN OFFSET FROM THE CORNER CREATED FROM THE ROOF ELEMENTS. THE BOX arranges theSE ELEMENTS to focus on the square formed by the negative space between the smaller copper linear elements and the green corner condition.
