Question three

What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why? The company I feel I would want to an they would be willing to sell my genre of music magazine is Future PLC for many reasons including their target audience and the magazines they have so far. Even though Future PLC does have 3 music magazines I don’t think they touch upon my genre that much, the magazine total guitar focuses more on classic rock and the blues however in some issues they have touched upon metal and punk but my genre which is clearly the heavier side of rock and alternative rock hasn’t really been touched upon. The magazine guitarist when it comes to interviews focuses mainly on once again the blues, classic rock and folk rock however once again they have started to touch upon alternative and modern metal something I think my magazine represents but I think still there is a gap in this industry for my magazine which focuses mainly on modern metal, alternative rock and heavy rock with a Kerrang style to it as this is something their magazines so far do not have therefore meaning I feel my magazine will appeal and bring a younger audience to the company. This magazine focuses mainly on guitars and the history of people who have become the greatest players in the world; they update the reader on latest news on certain guitar makes and give tips on playing one. This therefore is very different to my magazine as mine is clearly just on the gossip from upcoming and well known bands telling and informing my reader on their lifestyle and their journey in the music career. Finally the last magazine they have to offer is called Rhythm which is a monthly drumming magazine which basically does the same job as the magazine I have just mentioned, therefore still allowing the gap for a magazine like mine.

Future PLC is an online magazine company which is most likely to be visited by males aged 25 to 34 the magazine publisher also publishes magazines on paper back, I think this is a good place to start as my magazine is aimed predominately at males therefore the target audience is half way there however the ages of males is not what I have aimed my magazine at, my magazine age range is from 17 to about 28 but neither the less I still think because the magazine publisher publishes online the younger generation will be quickly targeted as the magazine also touches more upon gaming and modern technology making my magazine well-known as well as the publisher among the younger generation. I think my magazine would be better off with a medium publisher because the major ones already have magazines which target my audience however the medium ones still have many of the resources my magazine would need and they still have a large fan base therefore giving my magazine the foundations to grow. The reason I wouldn’t make my magazine go independent is that there is more of a chance that my magazine won’t be able to reach everyone in my target audience due to lack of resources, time and money. In today’s society for something to normally be successful you need to know people in high places therefore I think going to a medium publisher would be

better as I would already have the resources and money to create my magazine meaning it would be able to hit my target audience quicker than if I was to do it independently. The only big risk with going with a magazine company is that they may want me to change elements of my magazine something if needed and with the right input I would be willing to do but as I am only going to an online medium publisher I feel they are less likely to change my magazine that much as they haven’t got something like mine and I think they are in need for a magazine like mine to target the younger generation. Only 3 in 10 magazines titles survive their first four years however I think with this company my magazine will be able to survive a lot longer and become successful as I said before this company doesn’t have a magazine of my music genre that focuses on the gossip of the lifestyle lead by the rockers.

I would of probably if I could have chosen the major publishers like Bauer and IPC media as they are larger and have both online and paper versions of the magazines they publish however Bauer has the magazine Kerrang one which I have tried to base mine upon therefore there is no gap for a magazine like mine as they already have a very successful one. The same goes for IPC media they have the NME magazine which once again touches a lot upon my music genre therefore they would not be likely to take another magazine on which is basically the same as one they have already got. My magazine is an online one which is mainly down to the magazine publisher however this publisher also creates paper back magazines so therefore I think big UK distributors like ASDA and WH Smiths would more than likely distribute my magazine because Future PLC is a large company so it has the money to pay these distributors to have my magazine sold there. I think with my magazine Future PLC and myself would agree there should be some sort of radio station if my magazine was to be as successful as ones such as Kerrang, this is because then my magazine and the genre of music would be able to reach a much wider audience it also promotes my magazine making the target audience reach a large scale, also because my target audience would be more than likely to listen to the radio station on either their phones or the music channels. I feel Future PLC would be more than happy to create something like this as they haven’t got a radio station for any of their music magazines also because they are clearly a publisher who is more about keeping up with modern society and I feel something like this would allow them to benefit from.
