THE
ART OF LIVING IN
LONDON
COVER AND CHAPTER IMAGES by Bella Kotak
Bella Kotak is a fine art photographer based in Oxford and London. An art lover from a young age she always knew that she would work within the creative industry. Photography changed her life when she picked up a camera and began a 365 project on Flickr. From that moment she was hooked by this medium that translates thoughts and imagination into tangible form. Inspired by fairytales, nature and strong feminine characters Bella’s pictures lift the veil of the overlooked and reminds us that there’s magic in the most ordinary of spaces. She is an ambassador for Phase One, SmugMug, Canson Paper, and Vanguard. Her work has been featured in exhibitions in New York, London, and Paris.

MAURIZIO ANZERI Maurizio Anzeri makes his portraits by sewing directly into found vintage photographs. His embroidered patterns garnish figures like elaborate costumes, but also suggest a psychological aura, as if revealing the person’s thoughts or feelings. The antique appearance of the photographs is often at odds with the sharp lines and silky shimmer of the threads, such as in Giovanni where Anzeri has delicately stitched over the figure’s face - almost completely obscuring it - to create a new and beautifully eerie portrait. The combined media gives the effect of a dimension where history and future converge.

THE
ART OF LIVING IN LONDON
L
ondon is a majestic, magical city with an unrivalled tapestry of art, music,
history, culture, people, places and businesses - all of which constantly inspire.
However, one can also be forgiven for feeling somewhat overwhelmed by the sheer choice when it comes to where to go or what to do, which was our foremost challenge in bringing this, our first collection, together.
London’s living canvas is vast and constantly evolving, and we think that the best way to
find your way around is to ask people who live, love and breathe in the city. So that is what we did. Every business showcased in the following pages comes with a Londoner’s personal recommendation, so we know you will have a truly great experience visiting them.
The first six chapters are introduced by people, whose passion and knowledge of London, but particularly their local part of the city, is exceptional and we are extremely grateful for their help and contribution in making this book so special. Chapter seven, London Icons, presents some incredible businesses from all over the capital and they all come with our personal stamp of approval.
We hope you enjoy volume one of The Art of Living in London and when you do go to see our friends in these fabulous places, please tell them we said hello; they really do make this city one of the best places to live and work... in the world!

MAYFAIR
MAYFAIR

Introduced by
ARINA PRITCH FASHION DESIGNER
Mayfair is one of the most affluent areas in the city and is definitely the key luxury lifestyle destination with its variety of restaurants, bars, galleries, hotels and shops. Being in fashion myself, to me this area of London has a special and unique aura. It has its hidden gems not visible to the public eye or to tourists; stores of mot only established brands, but also new unknown brands with amazing designs and craft behind their work. Bruton place & Bourdon street with the shops of Ara Vartanian and Chalayan are my favourite. 41 South Molton Street featuring my brand, PRITCH London & Ganor Dominic is also a great lifestyle destination featuring various artists every month. Mount street and New Bond street are great destinations for shopping established brands. Shepherd market, which some people call “A hidden village” is great if you want to feel the old British aura and experience the culture of British pubs. Mayfair is also an art destination with Halcyon and Maddox galleries, being in my opinion the ones to watch. Both galleries feature some incredible art by outstanding contemporary artists from all over the world.
The Arts Club is an iconic membership club in the heart of Mayfair, this spot is like a little world. Being a hotel, live music club, restaurant and bar all at the same time it is my favourite place to hang out. Without realising it, you can spend hours there meeting new people, enjoying a friendly atmosphere and delicious food. The Connaught Bar is perfect for aperitivo or a chilled drink, and with its dark and mysterious atmosphere is a perfect location for a romantic date. Isabel Mayfair a trendy restaurant and bar on Albemarle street is a hot spot with Mediterranean cuisine - great for a weekend dinner followed by good music and drinks. Casa di Stefano is a cosy Italian restaurant serving up delicious cuisine and all with very friendly staff and a welcoming ambience. Scotts is a legendary and elegant seafood restaurant with great outside seating area, oyster and champagne bar. Harry’s Bar is a Venetian inspired private members’ club with outstanding décor and great food.
The window display that inspires me the most in Mayfair is Patek Philippe on New Bond Street, it is always so detailed that you can literally feel the amount of craft invested in each little detail. Burlington Arcade with its timeless little vintage shops. Lancashire Court is my favourite hidden street in the area. During summer you can even feel like you are somewhere in a Mediterranean town.

HIDE The most eagerly awaited restaurant opening of 2018, Hide is the new project from chef Ollie Dabbous and Hedonism Wines. MEET JO HANSFORD MBE ‘The first lady of colour’ Currently celebrating her 25th year in business, Jo Hansford has been showered with accolades throughout her career. This “first lady of colour” and “best tinter on the planet” is legendary. She is known as much for her expertise in colouring and business acumen as she is for the famous clientele. HRH Duchess of Cornwall, Elizabeth Hurley and Erin O Connor wouldn’t trust their tresses to anyone else.
Congratulations on your 25 year anniversary Jo. What did you do to celebrate this fabulous achievement?
what I do but I could never run the business side of things which she does, so we compliment each other very well!
We have decided to celebrate throughout the year with lots of lovely things. The main event is a party at the Soho Hotel to thank all our lovely staff for their loyalty and support over the years. Some have been with us since day 1! We are also thanking our clients throughout the month of May by inviting them to enjoy bespoke cupcakes and champagne as well as producing a limited edition sleeve for our best selling Illuminoil hair product!
Working with the right people is intergral to success - tell us about the team at Jo Hansford?
What have been some of your personal highlights (no pun intended!) over the last 25 years? I am very lucky to be in a career that I am completely passionate about and I have had so many wonderful experiences over the years with my clients, our staff, press and industry figures. One of the most memorable moments is receiving my MBE for services to the industry in 2010. Others include launching our ‘Expert Colour Care range of products and now having the amenities in all the rooms and suites of the Mandarin Oriental Hotel, and moving to larger premises in 2012 where we could create a much more contemporary modern salon for our staff and clients.
Tell us a little bit about the beginning of your journey to the top of the hair industry? Originally I wanted to be a make up artist but I could not start my training until I was 19 so was told to do hairdressing as it would be useful. I lived outside London and was very timid but ended up having the opportunity to work in a salon in Mayfair and took the chance even though I had no idea where it was! I discovered the colour room and realised where my passion lay and soon after joined Vidal Sassoon where I rose to the top and became one of his top colourists. After partnering with another hairdresser for 13 years and it ending acrimoniously I decided I need to work for myself and create my own destiny, and with the support of my husband, that was when Jo Hansford was born. It was not easy starting a business as a woman in a man’s world, and in the middle of a recession with 8 staff, but I never gave up and had huge self belief in what I could achieve. We now have 58 staff and a 4300 square foot salon in the heart of Mayfair and look after up to 400 clients a week.
Name one person who has been a major influence in your professional career so far, and why? My daughter has been a huge influence and she is the Managing Director of Jo Hansford. She came into the business in a serious way about 3 years after we opened and took over the reins from my husband when he died 17 years ago. I am an artist and love
We have an incredible team and a range of people who are all very talented. We like to have experts in every area so different team members are highly skilled in their craft, whether that is highlighting to styling, extensions or balyage, everyone has a niche. This means we retain the top people in our field and people who are completely passionate in their area of expertise. Many of our staff have been with us for over 10 years and that brings real sense of pride to me. Being a family business means we can nurture and support everyone where needed and look after them from a personal point of view if required as well.
The hair industry is constantly evolving - what do you do to keep the salon at the forefront of current trends? Our team members are always up to date with what is going on in the world as they love their industry and the world of fashion and beauty. We look after many press which gives us further insight in regards to trends and some team members work on shoots and shows outside of the salon. We create our own trends bi-annually which is important from a team perspective as everyone gets to voice their ideas.
What do you love most about Mayfair? Who would not want to work in the top area on the Monopoly board?! It’s full of amazing architecture, we are surrounded by the most premium shops and designers in London and it is full of interesting and stylish people! I feel very blessed to be here every day, it really is unique and special.
On a day off from work, what are we most likely to find Jo Hansford doing? I should say in a spa being pampered or in a fine dining restaurant having lunch, but realistically its probably in a garden centre!! However, I do love travelling, so being on a aeroplane to an exotic location is another answer!
If you had to recommend one (or two) of your favoutite places in London, where or what would it be? I love Mount Street Gardens, which is a secret little pocket of London that has a beautiful church and pretty manicured flower beds, with benches to sit and watch the world go by. It is very peaceful and no-one would know it was there unless you resided or worked in the area. I also love the Victoria and Albert Museum.

NOVIKOV Located in the heart of Mayfair, Novikov Restaurant & Bar has 2 distinct restaurants and one stylish Lounge Bar. Novikov combines cool and contemporary interiors with a superlative culinary offering. A real feature of the Novikov Asian Restaurant is its open kitchen. Fronted by an amazing display of seafood and vegetables, it evokes the atmosphere of an Asian food market. The atmosphere here is at once welcoming and relaxing, but subtle enough not to distract from the food itself. The menu uses novel flavours and texture combinations, inspired by Chinese and Pan Asian cuisine. As soon as you enter in Novikov Italian Restaurant you cannot miss the imposing wood-fired oven, suede wall panelling, mirrors in solid oak frames and the rustic chandeliers. The indulgent menu offers regional Italian dishes with a contemporary twist. The Lounge Bar is a must-visit destination, with an extensive cocktail menu, live music and performances by some of the world’s top DJs

STEFANIE HEINZE Stephanie Heinze’s work at first glance appears to be no more than hallucinatory abstractions. Upon closer inspection, one can discern intermingled figures who are caught in mid-action. Hunger (Suspicious Blinds) is a cacophony of bright, colourful and chaotic forms, with the shapes and colours blending into one another. Her style can be viewed as a culmination of her use of “clumsiness” as an artistic tool.

LOCK AND CO. HATTERS Lock and Co. Hatters started as an inconspicuous hat shop for the gentry in 1676. 341 years later, Lock & Co. Hatters has become the iconic hatter for generations of discerning men and women. Revered for centuries-honed craftsmanship, Lock and Co. Hatters innovative designs have graced the heads of some of the greatest figures in history. Admiral Lord Nelson wore a bespoke bicorne into the Battle of Trafalgar. Sir Winston Churchill adopted the Cambridge and Homburg hats as his trademarks, as did Anthony Eden and numerous other British statesmen. Dashing author Oscar Wilde was a fedora fan, while the equally debonair Beau Brummell procured Lock hats as part of his sartorial repertoire. From across the pond came Franklin D Roosevelt and Jackie Onassis who made sure to visit for a hat and even today the shop sees a stream of international royalty, musicians, sportsmen and women, and actors alike. Lock and Co. Hatters luxury hats are not only borne out of fashion, but also functionality, as the celebrated Coke (bowler) hat testifies. Named after nobleman Edward Coke, who commissioned Lock and Co. Hatters in 1849 to create a style hardy enough for his gamekeepers, the hat has transcended time to become a true classic, made all the more memorable by the silver screen: Bond villain Oddjob wore it in Goldfinger and Charlie Chaplin made it as much of his act as his moustache. No matter the customer, what they have all come to expect from Lock and Co. Hatters is the best: the best designs, the best fabrics, the best service. These principles were established at the beginning by founder Robert Davis and continue to be upheld by the 10th generation of the family, who still run the business from the same shop at 6 St. James’s Street today. Two Royal Warrants attest to Lock and Co. Hatters commitment to quality that is trusted. Lock & Co. Hatters womenswear centres on two collections. The women’s ready-to-wear range offers timeless styles, with a sprinkling of seasonal pieces that set the hatting benchmark. Whilst Lock Couture showcases the most exquisite hats, handcrafted by the label’s new milliner Prudence. For men, the Lock & Co.Hatters label offers core classics. They include the celebrated hats, from the Bowler and Panama, to rollable trilbies and wide-brim fedoras. They also include traditional caps, including flat caps made from British tweed, and infamous Baker Boy ‘Peaky Blinders’ six and eight-piece caps in hardy leathers and herringbone. Exclusive designs pepper the collection, such as an opulently embroidered velvet smoking cap and a leather-trimmed helmet that harks back to the explorer hats of the 19th century, each finished with luxurious branding and presented in an iconic, white Lock hatbox.

‘Image courtesy of Saatchi Gallery, London’
KATE MccGWIRE Though her works may be considered abstract, MccGwire’s structures are distinctly organic. Part of a lineage of British sculpture tied to Henry Moore and Barbara Hepworth, their shapes, albeit abstracted, follow the lines of the human body. By using feathers in a repetitious, obsessive way, MccGwire venerates the typically overlooked to create forms that are bodily yet also alien, animalistic and strange. The sculptural work Corvid is a dark, reptilian form comprised of 20,000 slick crow’s feathers. Seemingly frozen in time, you expect it to begin twisting and moving at any moment.

SOUTH KENSINGTON
SOUTH KENSINGTON

IVAN NYGAARD ROSENSCHEIN Publicist and CEO of Ivantainment
For 11 years South Kensington has been my home...and it just keeps getting better. Knocking on the Knightsbridge door and only 5 mins from Hyde Park, South Ken is a little Chelsea village with a big cosmopolitan vibe. Old Brompton Road is the main ore in South Ken, with a fabulous mix of local gems, both during daytime, through the evening and into the night. I enjoy my daily coffee at La Bottega, breakfast at Muriel¹s Kitchen, and for my extra healthy injection I’ll go to Squirrel. The afternoon tea and meetings tend to be in the lavish surroundings of The Ampersand Hotel or Queens Gate Hotel. The perfect expresso martini can be found at The Blakes Hotel, an institution in South Kensington, founded by Anouska Hempel, and the mother of the boutique hotel concept. Their restaurant also serves a superb brunch and is a very cozy place in the evening with a discrete and sexy bar in the basement. I enjoy some of the best Spanish tapas at Tendido Cero, and their sister restaurants across the street. If you are looking for a super steak then I fully recommend Macellaio, who also do take away for home cooking and offer a great selection of superb wines.
For delicious taste of the East (and lethal drinks!) then I fully endorse Nam Long, a legendary bar/ restaurant that’s been here since 1987. Rocca is a
laidback Italian restaurant, always packed and only a quick wait if you walk in. If you fancy superb pizzas and burgers with the family then The Goat is a great place to visit. For my oyster kick, we always visit The Wright Brothers and then KULU KULU is great for all your sushi cravings. For the best Italian ice cream, I go to Bute Street - Odono Ice Cream. I am a founder member of Albert’s, one of the coolest membership clubs in London. I DJ from time to time, they offer amazing Italian food and funky dancing till late. I also love the South Kensington Club a private members’ club, founded by Luca Del Bono. SKC has a great restaurant, spa, gym, lounge and terrace - it’s great place to work and socialise and occasionally I DJ and host nights there because of the wonderful vibe. Finally, if I am not able to go and see The Blues at Stamford Bridge then you’ll most likely catch me watching the match at the Duke of Clarence.

STANLEY CASSELMAN Born in Phoenix, Arizona 1963 Stanley Casselman is a multidisciplinary artist. Known early on for his innovative work with LED’s, Casselman rose to international prominence by taking on New York based critic Jerry Salt’s challenge “to fake a Richter”. After three years of fully exploring Richter’s take on a flexible edge squeegee Casselman was drawn back to re-explore his roots of working on an open screen. Consumed by the mantra “innovate or die” Casselman has recently forged several new visual languages and one of the worlds leading authorities on Abstract Expressionism, Dr. David Annam agrees. Casselman’s influence and philosophy lies in realm of abstract expressionism. He remains committed to the notion that color, line and form have the power to affect and change consciousness. Casselman has had numerous solo and group exhibitions in the United States and in Europe. His work is in the collections of the Frederick R. Weisman Art Foundation, Los Angeles, CA; Flint Institute of Arts, Flint, MI; Coral Springs Museum of Art, Coral Springs, FL; Georgia Museum of Art, Athens, GA; New Orleans Museum of Art, New Orleans, LA; Museum of Modern Art of Bologna, Bologna, Italy as well as numerous corporate and private collections. The artist lives and works in New York City.
Explanation of process, Untitled Presence series All of the work in the Untitled Presence series is acrylic on polyester screen. The screen is typically used for silk screening, but Casselman has been painting on it or more literally pushing paint through it for over thirty years. This piece was created from the backside of the screen by pushing paint in the direction it’s being viewed. The concept may be novel, but what’s possible because of it is anything but. Casselman’s technique includes throwing, splashing, pouring and then manipulating the mass with a squeegee. Applied paint simultaneously closes the surface and from the backside acts like tape. Furthermore, why his approach to picture making is unique, regardless of the actions made from the backside of the painting it will not affect the front side that has already been laid down. Thus expression and gesture can be preserved while action painting occurs around it. Untitled-Presence-Moment-1-44 is a section out of a larger painting. Casselman believes the overall size was 80 x 100”. Regardless, the point being the larger painting was only good and not at the level of perfection which is necessary in order to leave the artist’s studio. Furthermore, he’s not interested in trying to “fix”or manipulate a piece from the front. Marks made on the surface whether by a paint brush, air brush, squeegee or otherwise would leave a characteristic imprint and not be consistent or in harmony with the paint that was pushed from behind.

SOHO
Introduced by
JORI WHITE OWNER, JORI WHITE PR
I had just turned 18 when I arrived in London from America and first visited Soho. The energy, creativity, decadence and disruptive nature of the area totally rocked my world, and I spent evenings, weekends and late nights dancing to its beat. When I started my career, Soho was the only place I could imagine working. My first Jori White PR office was in Ganton Street and I hung out at The Sun and 13 Cantons a lot. Then I took a bigger space in Brewer Street on the 5th floor (there was no lift and the stairs kept me seriously fit!) and Soho House was my hang out. Finally I arrived in Bourchier Street where I’ve spent 15 gloriously creative years having lots of fun with my teams. Soho is without a doubt the busiest square mile in the capital, buzzing with activity 24 hours a day. It’s hedonistic, seductive, sybaritic, creative, big-hearted, electrifying, noisy… and I love it. The area has everything one could need, right on the doorstep, from unique food shops like Lina Stores and Camisa to the best place for drinks in the world Gerry’s (they have everything here one could ever want to drink). There is of course Liberty, whose very name is synonymous with design, alongside various hidden gems in Carnaby Street with their mix of highend cult labels and emerging niche brands. A personal favourite is Agent Provocateur on Broadwick Street. I still remember the stir that Joseph Corré and Serena Rees caused when they first went into the lingerie business in 1994. (And Azzi Glasser’s original scent she created for Agent Provocateur has been my personal scent for 20 years.) Their fabulous
designs really did help bring lingerie and sex toys out of the seedy back streets and into the mainstream. Another of my great loves – food – is also brilliantly served in Soho. There are literally hundreds of restaurants and it’s quite hard to pick one I would recommend over all others. That said I do have a bit of a soft spot for a glass of champagne with a delicious meal at Bob Bob Ricard in Upper St James Street, and Polpo in Beak Street I adore too. Ronnie Scott’s is the best place for live music and I’ve had some amazing experiences there, from seeing Sting sitting in the audience and spontaneously joining the band on stage to singing Brown Eyed Girl with Van Morrison. There are other jazz clubs in the capital, but nothing quite like this legend. I guess if I had to choose just one venue which sums up the vibrancy of this very special part of London it would have to be the Groucho Club. This place has become part of my life and the team there are like family. It’s filled with amazing contemporary art and as this is one of my passions, I’m always stimulated to see what’s new. This place pulses with the Soho beat like nowhere else. Soho is my home. I move with its rhythm. P.S. An organisation that has done so much over the years to make the district a better place in which to live, work or visit is the Soho Society. If you care about this iconic area as much as I do, please consider becoming a member.

DANNY FOX Danny Fox is a self-taught painter from Cornwall. His large-scale paintings, exploring themes of myth, magical realism and colonialism are reminiscent of the works by Gauguin and Alfred Wallis. Fox relates his work to the tradition of history painting, presenting the human figure as a hero from a tale. Ice Cream Seller depicts a cowboy walking through a sparse landscape, influenced from his travels across America and Thailand. His paintings are full of life and colour and he often repeats specific motifs and figures throughout his work.

THE DANE Entrepreneur, sales and marketing specialist, mobile geek and successful in a number of businesses - we caught up with partner and marketing manager of MASH Restaurants, Mikkel Glahn, for a coffee and a quick chat.
LB: Why did you choose London for your first MASH restaurant outside of Denmark? MG: For us London is the largest and most important place in Europe to be when it comes to branding and the food scene. What do you particularly like about being based in Soho? Soho is a place we can be ourselves as a brand... Soho has a local flavour but it is also an international destination for every visitor from around the world. How long has MASH been here in London? MASH is 5 years old now and our reputation is flourishing! We have local recognition and a great dialogue with our neighbours. Where else in the world is MASH? There are now seven SOON to be 8 MASH restaurants in Denmark and two in Germany (Hamburg and Dusseldorf). What makes a visit to MASH special? We always try to exceed customer expectation. Obviously we have premium quality steaks from the world’s best cattle but there is also a superb wine list that matches the excellence of the food.
Finally the passionate, knowledgeable and dedicated staff, in this unique location, all blend together beautifully to creates the ambience and atmosphere we like to call the MASH Experience! MASH has a reputation for making exceptional cocktails - do you have a personal favourite? My absolut favourite is still the classic negroni.. What about hobbies? Yes, during the colder part of the calendar I enjoy game-hunting and shooting. In the warmer times, we sail as a family and I play tennis with friends and the kids. Finally, the one place you always go or thing you always do when visiting London? My favourite place for a nice lunch and meeting is 5 Hertford Street and Dean Street Townhouse in Soho for breakfast... But my absolute favourite time when visiting London is when I go for my morning run in Hyde Park.
Thanks Mikkel! Now, time to pay a visit to MASH...

DANIEL CREWS - CHUBB Daniel Crews-Chubb graduated from Chelsea College of Art in 2009. His bold and vibrant work employs a traditional, expressionistic, painterly language wrestling with his primary influences – primitive art, ancient rituals and amateur anthropology. Crews-Chubb depicts the human body in intensely formed male and female figures, as can be seen in Rituals (bumba and belfie pink). His style closely references the raw expression of the French painter Jean Dubuffet and his Art Brut style.

MARYLEBONE
MARYLEBONE
Reece at Home House by Paul Griffith Photography
Introduced by
REECE WILLIAMS Boundaried north and south by two of the Royal Parks (Regents and Hyde respectively), the charming High Street lined with traditional pubs, beautiful boutiques, excellent local restaurants and historic hotels running through its heart, Marylebone is most definitely THE London space to spend time at your own pace. Throw in the home of the ubiquitous fictional detective Holmes and his sidekick Watson, Selfridges, the ever expanding department store, the links to the Beatles and the birthplace of the SAS, and you have probably the most eclectic, fascinating but welcoming residence in London. But despite its very central location and glamorous history, Marylebone still engenders the feel of a traditional London neighbourhood; principally through the efforts of the family-run Portman Estate. They are custodians not just in their responsibilities as landlord, they care greatly about the history and provenance of the architecture as well as the lifestyle and inclusion of residents, businesses and visitors alike. Curating this section of the book, I began to wonder how a perfect day would unfold… I spent over eight years working in the very heart of Marylebone at the wonderful Home House Member’s Club on Portman Square, and so it is here that I would probably begin. From here, a short stroll to Daniel Galvin’s salon to be cared and cosseted by any one of their myriad of talented stylists. Then on to the breath-taking Wallace collection for some cultural nourishment, before a trip round the corner to Yosma on Baker Street for the best Anatolian food and drink in town. Once fed and watered, off to Eliska Interior Design; the antipodean lady with a sharp eye for wonderful decor for a welcoming cuppa and cha. Then a brief round or two at BXR Gym for some pugilist-driven exercisebefore a notso-brief round of afternoon tea in the Zetter Townhouse lounge. Then, via a relaxing stroll in the vast and beautiful Hyde Park, I would finally make my way to the Chiltern Firehouse for dinner and a little celebrity spotting accompanied by a glass of the sommelier’s current favourite.

EAST STREET 2015

DALE LEWIS Dale Lewis completed his BA in Fine Art at London Guildhall University in 2004 before completing his MA in Fine Art at the University of Brighton in 2006. Lewis lives and works in London and paints from observation and situations he has imagined. His use of layering on large canvases and dark humour feeds into his paintings, making his work chaotic, intense, and bold. The scenes Lewis paints are expressive and tend to comment on society, as can be seen in East Street. His style often presents a choreography of figures which refer to mythology and modernist iconography. The pieces are twisted and mundane, and what is ordinary often reveals itself as bizarre. His experience of seeing areas of desperate poverty next to the super-rich provides him with plenty of satirical content.

Saatchi Gallery’s role is to bring contemporary art in all its forms to as wide an audience as possible, wherever it’s happening, and to champion the works of young and emerging artists. It aims to provide an innovative forum for contemporary art, presenting work by largely unseen or international artists whose work has rarely or never been exhibited in the UK. Through its commitment to creativity, innovation and forward-thinking, Saatchi Gallery has built up one of the most exciting and up-to-date “living” collections of contemporary art in the world. When Saatchi Gallery first opened over twenty-five years ago, it was only those who had a dedicated interest in contemporary art who sought out the Gallery to see work by new artists. However, the audience has built steadily over the years, and now - in its 10th year at Duke of York’s Headquarters in Chelsea - visitor numbers exceed 1.5 million per annum, with over 2,000 schools a year organising student visits. Many artists showing at Saatchi Gallery are unknown when first exhibited, not only to the general public but also to the commercial art world. Many of these artists are subsequently offered shows by galleries and museums internationally. In this effect, the gallery also operates as a springboard for young artists to launch their careers. The Saatchi Gallery website also displays over one thousand works that have been exhibited in the last three decades as a study resource, and also gives full details about the art in forthcoming exhibitions. The website has become a global meeting place for people interested in contemporary art.

BACKGROUND Founded in 1985 by Charles Saatchi, Saatchi Gallery attracts more than one million visitors a year and is the only contemporary art museum of its size not to charge entry to curated shows. Now located in the former Duke of York’s Headquarters on the King’s Road, the Gallery hosts regular temporary exhibitions, and is home to the Saatchi Gallery collection of contemporary art. Exhibitions have showcased numerous contemporary art movements such as Minimalism, Neo-Expressionism, and works by the Young British Artists, and it was the first UK museum to introduce the public to exhibitions of Cy Twombly, Brice Marden, Robert Ryman, Sol LeWitt, Anselm Kiefer, Richard Serra, Jeff Koons, Philip Guston, Sigmar Polke, Bruce Nauman, Cindy Sherman, Damien Hirst, Jenny Saville, Sarah Lucas, Glenn Brown, Andreas Gursky, John Currin, Ron Mueck, Grayson Perry, Jake & Dinos Chapman, Cecily Brown, Martin Kippenberger, Peter Doig, Carl Andre, Dan Flavin, Richard Prince, Charles Ray, Duane Hanson, and Alex Katz, among others. In recent years, it has presented surveys of emerging artists from China, India, the Middle East, Korea, Russia, South America, Africa, Germany, United States, and Britain, many of whom have achieved international success. Over the last five years, the Saatchi Gallery has hosted 15 out of the top 20 most visited exhibitions in London, and also has more followers on social media than any other museum in the world.
ORIGINS AND HISTORY Saatchi Gallery first opened in St John’s Wood, London in a 30,000 square foot ex-paint factory. Initially resembling a high security prison with a steel front door, and only open at weekends, the Gallery could display only a small part of Saatchi’s permanent collection, which at the time focused on established American contemporary painters and sculptors. In 2003 the Gallery moved to County Hall, the Greater London Council’s former headquarters on the South Bank, creating a 40, 000 square foot exhibition space. The opening show included a retrospective by Damien Hirst as well as works by other YBA’s such as the Chapman Brothers, Tracey Emin, Jenny Saville and Sarah Lucas. The Gallery remained at Country Hall until 2005, when it was announced that it would take on the entire Duke of York’s Headquarters building in Chelsea. This put a halt to London shows while the new premises were being prepared. During the period in between premises, the Saatchi Gallery website began an open-access section where artists, art students and cultural institutions could upload works of art and a biography onto their own pages It also gives artists not represented by galleries a digital platform to show their work to a global audience. It has become the world’s leading gallery website. Saatchi Gallery reopened on the 9th October 2008 in the entire 70, 000 square feet Duke of York’s Headquarters building on Kings Road where it currently resides.

MOTHER 2015

MONA OSMAN Mona Osman’s diverse heritage of Hungarian Judaism and Sudanese Islam has undoubtedly influenced her work, which examines the complexities of modern life and the anxiety of the individual. Through her work, she builds up narratives and inner logics through which she expresses a universal need to belong. In Mother, one can see the influence of Gustav Klimt and Piet Mondrian through her swirling use of colour and curving figures. The isolation of the two figures in relation to one another evidences Osman’s preoccupation with the dynamics of relationships between human beings, and the loneliness of existence without connections with others.

THE IVY CHELSEA GARDEN The iconic Grade II listed building that houses the restaurant is owned by Martin’s Properties and dates back to 1722, when it was a licensed public house – Six Bells – famous also for its bowling green. The building has been sensitively and substantially refurbished by Martin’s to create a new London destination restaurant, notable for its exceptional garden and outside space. The look and feel of The Ivy Chelsea Garden is manifestly British and engagingly vibrant. The restaurant is made up of various areas, each with a distinctive character. These include a bar and bar lounge, café, restaurant, orangery, terrace and garden. The interiors have been designed by Martin Brudnizki Design Studio (MBDS), and cleverly combine vintage with luxury, resulting in a space that is both alluring and down-to-earth. The garden has been created by Anthony Challis and Dan Curran of Ginkgo Gardens, and encompasses trailing wisteria and climbing roses adorning the garden’s pergolas, stone clad fountains and leafy trellises. The menu serves modern British and international dishes from dawn till dusk and a comprehensive and hugely enjoyable cocktail list includes a combination of classics and some inventive concoctions which the bar team has come up with.

Influencer & Notting Hill Business Owner
Boundaried north and south by two of the Royal Parks (Regents & Hyde respectively), the charming High Street lined with traditional pubs, beautiful boutiques, excellent local restaurants and historic hotels running through its heart, Marylebone is most definitely THE London space to spend time at your own pace. Notting Hill is one of the most visited places in London for good reason. The iconic area hosts the internationally famous Portobello market, is featured in award winning films, regularly showcased in artwork and now also a favourite back drop for Instagram influencers all over the world. I have lived in a number of areas of London in the last 15 years, but never felt quite at home with any of them. It was as if my subconscious was gently moving me every few years until I reach Notting Hill, where I firmly settled. My most favourite thing about Notting Hill is the cultural mix, that and the fact that you can wear sunglasses absolutely anytime, anywhere, regardless of the weather and no one bats an eyelid (great for us influencers and our Instagram posts). I moved to Notting Hill the same time I decided to leave my career and immerse myself in the lifestyle and wellness industry. With boutique gyms, clean eating restaurants, organic food shops, juice bars and trendy vegan eateries, Notting Hill is one of the ultimate places to be if you enjoy a bit of clean living. On the flip side slick restaurants and bars such as Beach Blanket Babylon and E&O are home to many fashionable Notting Hillbillies, that like to enjoy a highbrow evening, without having to venture into central London. The mix of art galleries, unique fashion brands and quirky corners of Notting Hill, alongside previously mentioned gems (and oh, don’t forget the sunglasses rule), were the many reasons why I opened my lifestyle and wellness space, Not Just Yoga in the area. Residing above cleaning eating restaurant Pomonas, there was no better space to the complete the lifestyle and wellness circle that is Not Just Yoga. In short, whether young, old, fashionable or quirky. Notting Hill is an area that oozes stye and has something for everyone.

Not Just Yoga grew organically from a yoga brand established in 2011. It was rebranded in 2016 as an online lifestyle and wellness concept as the founder wanted a space for others to experience their own wellness and success journey just as she did. She left the corporate hustle in 2010 after falling ill through exhaustion, to pursue a life in health and well-being. For full story click here. She’s currently well known for her Yoga, but wanted to incorporate the things she loves and has helped on her journey. Not Just Yoga’s online social media presence (@notjustyoga) grew rapidly and in 2017 the brand launched their own venue in London (@notjustyogalondon). With collaborations showcasing yoga, fashion, art and anything else lifestyle and wellness orientated. You can really see it’s Not Just (about) Yoga.
Not Just Yoga hosts an annual charity fashion catwalk - Travel in Style. Travel in Style is a series of charity fashion shows centred around holiday destinations. Our most recent event was Solis, where unique designers showcased ‘what to pack’ for a luxury winter sun getaway. As our ethos is wellness first, regular fitness classes and workshops are ever present at our space. Our instructors have all come from a wellnes journey of their own and our guest speakers are invited to give talks on nutrition and food. This combined with Pomona’s menu inspired by healthy living the Californian way, Not Just Yoga provides a full circle of wellness. BARRY’S BOOTCAMP Barry’s is known around the world for sculpting some of Los Angeles’ most celebrated bodies (when you’re name-checked in Entourage, you know you’re a bonafide Hollywood institution.) Little wonder then that they’ve achieved cult status since arriving in London in 2013. Classes sell out within seconds, their instructors are household names, and not only do clients get proven results thanks to a signature combination of strength and cardio training - but with fellow bootcampers including Ellie Goulding and David Beckham (who describes it as “like a bonding session”) there’s a great chance of bumping into an A-lister on the neighbouring Woodway tread.

Themes of journeying, of foreign places and otherness play a part in his artistic practice, and Anholt’s works very often have strong narrative elements. We talked exclusively with multi award winner Gina Conway owner of three successful Aveda Lifestyle salons in London, as well as a luxury lifestyle home service called Gina Conway PrivĂŠ.
GINA CONWAY What made you decide to open a salon in London? I am a California girl through and through, where I am a sun seeker, a nature explorer and bit of a tree hugger. I am lucky to have lived in the best cities in the world, taking something from all of my cultural influences. I have a San Francisco mentality, with a dash of London cool and a nod to Paris chic. I am inspired every day. I wanted to bring the California sunshine to London. I spent my youth traipsing through forests looking for plants to eat, and smell, and being so environmentally conscience about polluting my beautiful land. Believing in flower power and being a city lover, I tell people “I am a little bit Country and a little bit Rock and Roll”.
Your salons have such a great energy in them. How do you create this? Positive vibes run through my veins and I wake up every day on the right side of the bed. I walk down a street and pick up rubbish, I always take the time to tell the lovely ladies passing me that they look really beautiful today, and I mean it. I find beauty in all people. It has been my job since I was 18 to make people look great and feel great about themselves. I expose my guests inner beauty and give them confidence and power. I share my secrets and stories, we have a laugh. I listen with all my senses to them so I can connect with them deeply. My heart is open and overflowing and I hope that I can share this with everyone I meet. I sprinkle all of my clients and team with fairy dust. Just for luck.
What is your “Why?”
What is the secret to the unique style you have?
I spend my days innovating and improving my business
The salon on Fulham Road is the first incarnation of a dream I had. Having worked in some of the top salons and spas in San Francisco and London, and completing a fashion degree, I wanted to combine my loves and share my art. Fulham salon was originally an art gallery and hair atelier. I wanted to create a place where people wanted to want to come to work, and where our guests would want to come and stay. Notting Hill and Wimbledon salons and spas soon followed as my clients moved and begged me to open in their neighbourhood!
so that I can say I have the best salons in London among the best salons in the world. I go to work thinking about how I am going to make an impact in others lives. I look at the world through a creative lens and make sure that everything I touch is better for my influence on it. My mother taught me to “make the world a better place than you found it”.
You have won many awards, how do you do it? Our multi award winning salons are filled with hand picked artists and visionaries. Their passion lies in giving a bespoke service above and beyond expectations. Essentially, we are daymakers. Filled with American style customer service, and beautiful interiors, our sanctuary is a haven and once you close the doors from the hustle and bustle, you are really transported to our world. We use Aveda products and beautiful natural haircolour which helps us create gorgeous looking hair and award winning results. Aromatherapy and massages await every guest experience, a smile is freely and warmly given. 203
GINA CONWAY - SALONS AND SPAS Gina’s salon in Fulham has been providing premium hair colour expertise since 2001. This gallery-inspired Salon was originally a hair atelier whilst curating art exhibits. It has a very loyal following as guests enjoy the cosy atmosphere and customised service that goes with such a dedicated, friendly team. A living moss wall along with a grand feature eco-light art installation, cleverly designed to make guest’s look and feel their best encompass Gina’s mission to make the world a better place. Gina has been keen for some years to create her own brand of ethically sourced products made by local artisans, is delighted to have the first products from her range ready for market; a timeless, elegant candle, a reed diffuser to die for and oh-so-relaxing organic bath truffles. The hand-poured candles are made from natural wax (free from toxins and petroleum) and our infusions have one of the highest percentage of natural fragrance available on the market. The Bath Truffles are deliciously indulgent and hand-made ensuring that great care has been taken to make these exclusive products. The stylish Reed Diffuser will enhance and scent a room for up to nine months and is a best seller.

MR FOGG’S GIN PARLOUR
There are more than 300 different types of gin on offer at Fogg’s Gin Parlour! For the uninitiated gin swiller, the bartenders will happily guide you through some of the more unusual flavours. Audemus Pink Pepper Gin is served with a giant chunk of ice, chipped off a large block out the back, dried slice of lemon, thyme and red pepper corns. The tonic water, Fever-Tree in this case, is matched with each gin to ensure the flavour doesn’t overpower the spiciness of gin. All along the back wall is a long wooden bar with marble counter, silver champagne bowl and cut crystal water jugs. There are three bartenders dressed in waistcoats and lace shirts. The room makes you feel like sitting in a Victorian living room rather than a bar. It has a cosy feel but isn’t too crowded. However, the real joy is the large glass of gin between my hands. At Fogg’s gin parlour, gin is more than just a spirit slung in to a G&T. Here, it is all about the combination of gin type, tonic, garnish and slither of ice.

Working with all ingredients, from the simplest to the noblest, Gregory and his team strive for authentic, original culinary creations graced with impeccable seasoning and his now-famous touch of acidity. Gregory’s cuisine is described in turns as generous, inspired or daring, but it is always a source of surprise and delight. Marchand has worked in critically acclaimed restaurants including the Mandarin Oriental in Knightsbridge, Georges Vongerichten’s Vong in Hong Kong, NYC’s Gramercy Tavern, Jamie Oliver’s Fifteen (where he gained his nickname) and many more. Using the world as his larder, Gregory’s instinctive approach to cooking delivers simple yet sophisticated dishes rooted in French cuisine and transformed through inspiration from his international repertoire.

RANNVA KUNOY Rannva Kunoy is an artist from the Faroe Islands whose unique work challenges artistic norms. Her use of vibrant crystal paint, which is normally used on luxury cars, dictates the movement of the eye across the canvas’ gradient. By scratching into the glossy surface, she creates energetic gestures that guide the viewers’ eye across the canvas. Through this technique, Kunoy encourages shifts in visual language and explores the psychology of perception. Kunoy graduated from the Royal College of Art in 2001 after completing her study of painting at City and Guilds of London Art School, London in 1999.
