Hello Fellow Opera Goers, We close our mainstage productions of the 2015-16 season with the fabulous The Tales of Hoffmann. Thank you so much for joining us here at the Overture Center; we look forward to seeing you again next season for another exciting and varied lineup of classical and newer works. Now it’s on to summer. Be sure to join us on Saturday, July 23, at 8pm for our unique Opera in the Park in the natural amphitheater of Madison’s Garner Park. It is the 15th anniversary of our free gift to the community, and the whole family is welcome. Garner Park opens at 7am the day of the concert, and blankets, chairs, food and beverages are welcome, so come early to secure a prime location and bring a picnic. Neither our mainstage productions nor Opera in the Park would be possible without your generous support. If you are not already a supporter, why not turn on your smart phone during intermission tonight and make a donation at madisonopera.org? Your contribution will not only support our public presentations, but also our educational activities in schools, libraries, and retirement centers. Thank you for your support and for joining us at the opera!

Dear Friends, “What is your favorite opera?” I am often asked this question, and while I have one quick answer (Mozart’s The Marriage of Figaro), the list gets longer after that, and The Tales of Hoffmann is always in the top five.

Hoffmannn was one of the first operas I fell in love with, in part due to a Metropolitan Opera telecast when I was in high school. I swiftly memorized that particular production, and to this day could describe the staging and musical choices. Many people consider this one of their favorite operas, and yet none of us have seen or heard the same version. Offenbach died while the opera was in rehearsal, so there is no completed or correct version; the premiere in 1881 even cut the Giulietta act. As decades have passed, new music was written, lost music was rediscovered, and each production invents anew how to bring this glorious opera to life. Hoffmann lives first and foremost because the music is wonderful, whether it is something Offenbach stole from himself (the barcarolle), one of the first arias he wrote for Hoffmann (Nicklausse’s violin aria), or something written by someone else 25 years after the premiere (Dapertutto’s aria). But it is also theatrically and intellectually compelling on a very deep level, with many ways to look at its story and meaning. If you don’t already love this opera, I hope you will see after today why I do. As summer approaches, please be sure to put July 23 on your calendar for Opera in the Park. Starring Emily Birsan, Angela Brown, Scott Quinn, and Sidney Outlaw, this Madison summer tradition celebrates its 15th anniversary this year – help us make it the greatest concert ever! Please also join us for our 2016/17 season, which covers 224 years of opera: Romeo & Juliet, Charlie Parker’s Yardbird, and The Magic Flute. Whether you are a newcomer to opera or an opera omnivore, we have something for you in the season! Thank you for being here and joining us on this fantastical journey. Cheers,
Kathryn Smith General Director 7 Madison Opera

THE STORY OF THE OPERA PROLOGUE Inside Luther’s bar, the poet Hoffmann is roused by a chorus of spirits of wine and beer. He leaves for the opera house next door, where his girlfriend Stella is singing in a performance of Don Giovanni. The Muse appears and bemoans Hoffmann’s attachment to Stella. She calls on the spirits to help her, then assumes the guise of Nicklausse, Hoffmann’s friend. Councilor Lindorf bribes Andrès, Stella’s servant, to give him a note intended for Hoffmann. Inside is the key to Stella’s dressing room. Lindorf decides to keep the appointment himself. An intermission crowd fills the bar, followed by Hoffmann and Nicklausse. Hoffmann is troubled; the crowd urges him to drink and sing. He begins a ballad about Kleinzach the dwarf, only to digress into recollections of love. Lindorf goads Hoffmann into an exchange of sarcastic insults; the encounter leaves Hoffmann with a sense of foreboding. When the crowd teases him about his current infatuation with Stella, he offers to tell the story of three past loves.... ACT I The inventor Spalanzani admires his most recent invention, the mechanical doll Olympia, with which he hopes to recover money he lost in the collapse of a banking house. Hoffmann arrives, eager to see Olympia, whom he has only glimpsed through a window. The mad scientist Coppélius sells Hoffmann a pair of magic glasses through which he alone perceives Olympia as human. Spalanzani and Coppélius haggle over their share of the doll’s profits and Spalanzani pays off Coppélius with a promissory note. Coppélius suggests that Olympia be married off to Hoffmann. Party guests arrive, and Olympia sings an aria for them. Hoffmann is enchanted, oblivious to the periodic running down of the doll’s mechanism. Alone with her, Hoffmann pours out his heart and believes he is loved in return. Nicklausse suggests that Olympia might not be alive, but the poet refuses to listen. Coppélius returns in a fury, having discovered that Spalanzani’s bank draft is worthless, and vows revenge. The guests return from dinner to waltz. They are joined by Hoffmann and Olympia, who whirl faster and faster, until Hoffmann falls and breaks his magic glasses. Coppélius tears Olympia apart, and Hoffmann finally realizes she was a robot.
Intermission ACT II Crespel has fled with his daughter, Antonia, to Munich, hoping to end her affair with Hoffmann. Alone, Antonia sings a plaintive love song. Crespel begs her to give up singing: she has a weak heart, and the effort will endanger her life. He instructs his servant, Frantz, to allow no one into the house while he is gone. Hoffmann arrives, and Nicklausse, citing his past experience with love, tries to persuade him to devote himself solely to art. Antonia 9 • Madison Opera
THE STORY OF THE OPERA appears and she and Hoffmann swear eternal love. Though her father has forbidden her to sing, Antonia convinces Hoffmann to sing a love duet with her, but she soon falls ill. Crespel returns and is alarmed by the arrival of Dr. Miracle, who treated Crespel’s wife the day she died. The doctor conjures Antonia’s spirit, questioning her and commanding her to sing. He offers medicines to save Antonia, but Crespel forces Miracle to leave. When the real Antonia returns, Hoffmann begs her never to sing again and she reluctantly agrees. Miracle reappears, taunting Antonia with prospects of fame as a singer. Miracle brings a statue of Antonia’s mother to life and declares that her mother wants Antonia to equal the glory of her own fame. Antonia sings more and more feverishly until she collapses. Hoffmann rushes in, only to find her dead.
Intermission ACT III In a Venetian palace on the Grand Canal, the courtesan Giulietta joins Nicklausse in a languid barcarole. Hoffmann mockingly praises the pleasures of love. Giulietta’s current lover, Schlemil, jealously acknowledges her apparent affection for Hoffmann. Giulietta invites her guests to the gaming tables. Nicklausse warns Hoffmann against the courtesan, but he denies interest in her, declaring that should he fall in love with her, the devil may have his soul. Dapertutto, overhearing them, produces a large diamond with which he will bribe Giulietta to steal Hoffmann’s reflection, just as she already has stolen Schlemil’s shadow. Lured by the diamond, Giulietta agrees. She seduces Hoffmann and he falls in love instantly, as Giulietta carries out Dapertutto’s command. As Schlemil returns with the guests, Hoffmann realizes that he has lost his reflection. Hoffmann demands that Schlemil give him the key to Giulietta’s room; when Schlemil refuses, Hoffmann kills him in a duel. Hoffmann rushes to Giulietta’s room, only to find it empty. He watches as Giulietta leaves with Dapertutto. EPILOGUE Hoffmann has finished his tales, which each described a different aspect of the same woman, Stella. Now he wants only to get drunk and forget. Arriving in the bar after her performance, the opera singer finds the poet barely coherent. She is about to leave with the triumphant Lindorf when Hoffmann interrupts to sing one last verse of “Kleinzach.” Alone in the bar with only the Muse to console him, Hoffmann contemplates life and the nature of love.

Jacques Offenbach (1819-80) died while The Tales of Hoffmann was in rehearsal, without having finished the score.
•
Hoffmann, the title character, is named after E.T.A. Hoffmann (1776-1822), a German writer whose most famous story now is the one on which The Nutcracker is based.
•
Offenbach based his opera on a play by Jules Barbier and Michel Carré, which premiered in 1851, before Offenbach was established as a composer. The two men had used three of E.T.A. Hoffmann’s short stories to form the tales.
•
The dress rehearsal for the first production ran over 4 1/2 hours, so they eliminated the Giulietta act entirely and put some of that music in the Antonia act and Epilogue. This meant the Antonia act was now set in Venice, not Munich.
•
Opening night had to be delayed because the son of the head of the OpéraComique had been seriously injured fighting a duel. The opera finally opened on February 10, 1881 to great acclaim.
•
The barcarolle, which opens the Giulietta act, was first written for an Offenbach opera called Die Rheinnixen, which had been a failure in Vienna in 1864. Offenbach borrowed the tune from himself.
•
Much of the traditional Giulietta act was not written by Offenbach. “Scintille Diamant,” Dapertutto’s aria, was first used in 1904 or 1905, based on a tune from the overture to another Offenbach work. The Septet in that act was also added at this time.
•
Offenbach always intended the order of the “tales” to be Olympia - Antonia Giulietta, but for much of the 20th century, they were performed as Olympia Giulietta - Antonia, in part because Antonia is the most musically “complete” tale.
•
Music that may sound “new” to longtime opera goers, such as Nicklausse’s violin aria and the apotheosis at the end of the opera, was in fact some of the first music Offenbach wrote for Hoffmann, but it was lost in boxes for almost a century.
•
Offenbach wrote over 100 stage works in his lifetime. The majority were one-act operettas, but many were full-scale works like Orpheus in the Underworld and La Perichole. The Tales of Hoffmann is considered his first serious opera.
•
Offenbach had a dog named Kleinzach. Madison Opera • 20

Play Your Part! Since 1961, Madison Opera has brought the beauty and power of professional opera to the stage. Won’t you help us continue the tradition? Eight Great Reasons to Give to Madison Opera 1. Support a world-class team of artists who create the performances you love, from beloved classics to provocative new works.
2. Give a deeper experience. We bring opera into our community via our education and
engagement programs that are largely free to attend, such as Opera Novice, Opera Up Close, previews in libraries and senior centers, and more. Our Student Matinees bring thousands of middle and high school students from across our state to a fully-staged opera, while our High School Apprenticeship program opens the doors to the world of opera both on the stage and off to a select group of students.
3. Opera in the Park. Our annual free concert, which celebrates its 15th year this summer, was attended by over 16,000 people last July, giving us the highest per capita attendance of any such event in the country!
4. Training for the next generation of artists. Our Studio Artists, young singers in
the transitional period between university and their professional careers, gain valuable experience and exposure, while serving as Madison Opera’s artistic ambassadors to our community.
5. We are a not-for-profit company. Without our generous donors, there would be
no Madison Opera, as ticket income pays for only one-third of the cost of bringing our operas to the stage.
6. Gifts of ALL sizes make a difference. Your donation, no matter the amount, is the driving force that helps to support our performances and community programs.
7. All gifts are tax-deductible to the extent allowed by law.
