rarity arrived in Madison in late October. Twin colts Tim and Tiny made a journey from Carberry, Manitoba
in Canada all the way to Sunshine Oaks in Madison. The two brothers are somewhat of a wonder. “For all three of them to survive, the mare and both babies, is a one in 10,000 shot.” said trainer Clare Pinney. “It’s very, very rare.”
Pinney and her father each bought one of the twin colts. The twins come from the lineage of a famous horse. “Their father Walsh is a son of Seattle Slew, Pinney said. “He was the last winner of the Triple Crown.” Seattle Slew won the Triple Crown in

Tim and Tiny were born without any health problems, another rarity of twin horses. The twins are already training, but starting out with the basics. “Just having to stand and be patient is something they have to learn,” Clare said.

oliday decorating became a year-round passion for Carol Redd when her son Roy was born in 1974. Her home in the Colinwood Estates neighborhood off Gillespie Road now glistens with Christmas cheer for her grandchildren. While baby Roy napped, Carol

ordered kits to make ornaments and decorations. “My friend Pat helped me. I know what I like, but she has a real knack for decorating,” she said. As Roy grew up, Carol decorated for holidays practically year-round. Now Carol focuses on Christmas decorating for grandchildren Hailey, 10, Brody, 4, and Claire, 2. “I love the magic
of it,” she said. “I love to watch a kid just glow.” Roy, wife Tara and their children live in Parma, Ohio. Carol’s grandchildren call her “Bama,” so “they’ll know they have a grandmother in Alabama.” Eventually, Carol hopes to move near them in Ohio.

With her holiday themes, Carol avoids a monochrome scheme by mixing colors yet carries a theme in each room. She uses many animated toys because “the kids love to push buttons. I keep them entertained to have good memories of Alabama.” The Christmas spirit starts outside with candy canes and snowmen. In the foyer and dining room, Carol uses angels, Santa and Mrs. Claus, cats and mice, along with Anna Lee cloth decorations. The foyer’s 9-foot Christmas tree glitters in crystalline, silver and red, while snow, red berries and pine cones offer a natural touch. “This tree reminds me of living up North after the first snow — all crystal outside,” Carol said. At-attention nutcracker soldiers and snowmen frolic in the living room. Christmas geese, deer and fairies are gathered in one corner. The fireplace mantle features an oversized wreath, adorned with nutcrackers and drums. Hydrangeas add focal points. Carol’s kitchen is lively with Santas, a Danbury Mint train with Mrs. Claus, M&M candy decorations and gingerbread trimmings at the ceiling. Even the laundry room is in the Christmas spirit with a snowman grouping on a ledge. In 1956, Carol’s parents Mary and Johnson Redd moved from Meridian, Miss. to Huntsville for Johnson’s work with NASA. Carol married in 1971, moved to Ohio, later divorced, and returned here in 1997 to help her parents. Carol retired after 30 years in civil service and 12 years with the district attorney’s office. Her most cherished possession is a manger her mother made in ceramics. “When Mother passed away, I found a caroling scene with animals and angels. My dad made and painted the stable,” Carol said. She added a miniature baby grand piano that plays Christmas music. Angels grace several rooms and are named for loved ones who have passed away. A few angels honor friends “who haven’t got their wings yet,” Carol said. In the “kids’ room,” Carol incorporated a blue-andwhite chintz tea party set for a theme tree with doilies and porcelain dolls. An angel and a two-tier, Victorian tree skirt share the same fabric. Twas the Night Before Christmas is the retro theme for children’s books Carol collected in the 1960s. “The books have fuzzy, felty material,” Carol said. Carol finagled her 101 Dalmatians tree after seeing a Happy Meal at a McDonald’s in Kentucky. She called restaurant headquarters and paid $101 for a complete set, which she wires on multiple, staggered trees. Already thinking ahead to Christmas 2013, Carol plans to decorate a Christmas tree with her mother’s costume jewelry and vintage purses.

ost teenagers are usually busy worried about getting dates or being accepted into their favorite college. Continental Coffee owner 19-year-old Jillian Boozer is not your typical teen. As owner of Continental Coffee in Madison, Boozer is more concerned about meeting payrolls and making pastries since her business opened June 5. “I just have a lot of drive and perseverance,” said Boozer, a graduate of Westminster Christian Academy in Huntsville, the Women’s Business Center of North Alabama, and the prestigious Ivy League Barista Academy. “I’ve always wanted to work in coffee,” Boozer said. She got her start working with Atlanta Bread Company and quickly set her sights on owning her own business. With support from her parents, Robby and Tina Boozer, she began to take business classes. She eventually moved to California where she enrolled at Coffee Trade School and learned coffee shop management. Boozer returned to Madison where she grew up and decided to take a leap of faith into the business world. She believes she is one of, if not the youngest, business owner in Madison. “I never thought it would be possible so soon, but it has been a dream for a really long time,” she said. “It’s going better than I ever expected and I’m happy with the success of the first location. Making it a franchise is the overall plan.” While she began with the idea of selling coffee and other beverages, Boozer knew she wanted to offer even more for her clientele – and not just something shipped in from other places. Everything she serves – soups, sandwiches, pastries, muffins and other items – are all whipped up in the restaurant’s kitchen by her three employees, Boozer and her mom, who has a full-time job at Redstone Arsenal, along with her husband. “It’s a group effort,” said Boozer. “My mother helps out a lot, especially when one of the employees is out. She can get really creative and is very supportive. We have a lot of fun together.” Boozer’s soups were a little slow catching on since she opened at the start of summer, but she said they are “taking off ” since the weather has turned cooler. Soups include tomato basil, broccoli and cheese, gumbo and jambalaya. She offers three types of panini sandwiches and

chicken salad, plus “a lot of organic food” to cater to her vegetarian customers. Of course, the main attraction is the coffees, lattes and cappuccinos. Coffee lovers have many flavor and
milk options, including dairy milk, soy milk, almond milk, coconut milk, and multiple syrup flavors, some of which are sugar-free. Flavored coffee such as caramel mocha
has been a hit with customers, said Boozer. While Continental Coffee is a place to enjoy a good meal, it’s also a place to gather with friends to socialize through Open Mic Night every Saturday evening featuring local talent. “We just want a place for the community to come and enjoy themselves,” said Boozer. “Our purpose is to serve our customers with the highest grade coffee one can offer, and to teach the valley all about coffees of other continents.” The restaurant also offers free Wi-Fi and partners with local gyms to provide a list of healthy food choices for its members. Continental Coffee is located at 7663 Highway 72 West, Suite A, across from Outback and Arby’s. It is open Monday-Friday, 6 a.m. to 7 p.m., and Saturday, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., and includes a drive-through. best wireless corporation in America. The best feeling ever is when a customer can walk into our store and we know their name — or remember a story they tell us”. Verizon is offering several innovations in service and phones. Apple’s iPhone 5 has access to Verizon’s 4G LTE network. Motorola Razr Maxx HD offers amazing battery life and 4.7inch screen. Verizon’s Home Fusion gives an alternative to home Internet service. In addition, Verizon’s Home Phone Connect cuts cost with unlimited calling to anywhere in the United States for $20 per month. New Share Everything Plans can connect a maximum of 10 devices and share data, plus provide unlimited talk and text for the entire family. Sure Response from Verizon gives peace of mind at home or out of town by pressing a button to call 911, finding directions or making a call. Melissa Cain with System Dynamics International said many coworkers use Verizon with phones ranging from iPhone 4S to the latest Droid 4. “Heather Balcerek is the best representative SDI has had. Heather gets back with us quickly and looks for the best deal with rates and cell phones. I’ve never received a complaint about reliability of Verizon service,” Cain said. “Having Heather as point of contact makes all the difference in the world.”
Because of national travel, SDI employees rely on their Verizon phones for business, Cain said. “If phones weren’t dependable and service wasn’t great, customers wouldn’t be happy.” “Cellular Center GA-AL lives by the highest of values that include professionalism, friendliness, integrity, accountability, innovation and recognition,” Balcerek said. “These values play an important part in how we operate our stores every day.” In Madison, Verizon is located at 8498 Madison Boulevard in the Madison Festival Plaza with Mattress King, near the intersection of Hughes Road and Madison Boulevard. It is open Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Sunday from noon to 6 p.m. For more than 10 years, Verizon has been a part of the community. The business first opened as In2Wireless on Hughes Road and U.S. Highway 72. “We are still here providing the same great service. We do have some new faces including the new location manager, Nic Onuszkanycz,” Balcerek said. “Whenever you think of Verizon, think of Cellular Center, your local Verizon Premium Wireless Retailer, here in Madison.” For more information about Verizon, call 256-464-3311, email Madison20@ccgaal.com or visit Facebook/ccgaal@ Cellular_Center.

new approach to exercise and weight loss, all set to music, has Madison feeling the burn. Owner Meredith Davis leads group exercise classes at Pure Barre in the Shoppes on Main in downtown Madison in 55-minute sessions. Barre refers to the wall-mounted bar at Pure Barre, the same bar ballet dancers use. Clients first warm up with light weights at the center of the room.
38 Madison Living
“The warm up is fast-paced and quick to get your heart rate up,” Davis said. Next, exercises focus on small, isometric movements at the barre to tone thighs, seat and abs, while stretching sections in between movements. “You end with final ab work in the center of the room and stretching to cool down,” Davis said. “You’ll find yourself doing push-ups, planks, abdominal teasers and tricep dips to name a few.”
TOP: Instructors and students practice knee dancing, which works the top of one’s thigh muscles. ABOVE: Exercise equipment at Pure Barre. FAR RIGHT: Owner Meredith Davis, Lyndsay Moon, Mallory Hooker, Shawna Jensen, Brandi Crump and Chelsea Lavish practice the High V, which works one’s inner and outer thighs. While the technique incorporates elements of cardio, toning is the emphasis. Except for stretching, the class has no breaks. The entire class has the same set up, strengthening a muscle group immediately followed by stretching. Clients finish with “a burning sensation from basically just holding still. The class makes you feel re-energized,” Davis said. The workout targets all of the body’s large muscle groups with which women tend to have problems: back of the arms, abs, thighs and seat. The client’s movements are small and isometric — a pulse, a tuck, a press-out with the knees, moving up and down an inch. Pure Barre has “its own technique that fuses elements of ballet, yoga, pilates and strength training,” Davis said. “The technique itself is very challenging, but it’s very effective. Clients see results after just 8-10 classes. I have literally seen people shrink in front of my eyes!” Music is a major component in a Pure Barre class. “The entire workout is set to the beat or tempo of a song. You’ll hear all genres of music in class but definitely top 40 hits,” Davis said. For stretching and cool down, clients hear soft rock, like John Mayer, David Gray and Ray Lamontagne. In addition to losing weight, Pure Barre students lose inches and body fat. “Over time, you will change fat into muscle. We all know muscle weighs more than fat, but overall you will walk out with a smaller jean size, a higher self-esteem/self confidence and a better outlook on your own personal well-being,” Davis said. Why do clients get fast results with Pure Barre? “The technique works,” Davis said. Founder Carrie Rezabek Dorr conceptualized and designed the entire workout with careful thought. For example, the first part of the class focuses on the legs. “Your goal is to fatigue them, because the second half of the class you are sitting down, giving those legs a rest.” Davis has worked with Pure Barre since January 2010, first as an instructor in Birmingham. In February 2011, she opened a studio in Huntsville on Whitesburg Drive. She plans to open a third studio in her hometown of Hudson, Ohio later this year. Pure Barre is located in the new Shoppes on Main center at 14 Main St., Suite A. For more information, call 256-684-5549, email Madison@purebarre.com or visit www.purebarre. com.
