W elcome ! Arcata Main Street welcomes you to the 26th anniversary

of Arcata’s Humboldt Bay Oyster Festival on the historic Arcata Plaza! Arcata Main Street’s Oyster Festival is now the largest one-day event in Humboldt County. Every year, more than 13,000 ecstatic festival-goers and community gather on the Arcata Plaza to celebrate and showcase our local aquaculture and savor the delicacies that have earned us the reputation of the Oyster Capital of California. Food lovers will be lured by the salty siren song of oysters, and other fare, while quenching their thirsts with local craft beer, hard apple cider and locally-made wines, many from locally-grown grapes. Taps close at 4:30, so plan ahead! Local chefs will compete for the Best Raw Oyster, Cooked Oyster and Non-Oyster awards, while dancers frolic on the grass to live, local music. Kids will want to visit the new FLUPSY (Oyster Nursery) for games and activities, T-shirt coloring, wax hands, balloon creations, giant puppets, concessions and free ice cream. It’s located on 9th Street between H & I Streets. We also have an expanded Merchandise Booth on G Street this year, and a bigger-than-ever Art Market, on H Street between 9th & 10th streets. Both the Art Market and FLUPSY are near our new entrance at the corner of 9th & H Streets. Don’t miss the quirky, ritual Oyster Calling Contest at noon with Dave Silverbrand; then at 2 p.m. contenders will be slamming down bivalves in KWPT The Point's Shuck-and-Swallow Contest. And you don’t want to miss the chance to “dunk a librarian” for a good cause! Oyster Festival is about celebrating North Coast culture where our merchants, restaurateurs, volunteers and guests embrace locallygrown and prepared foods, drinks and art. When you leave the Arcata Plaza, you’ll take a renewed appreciation for our home, our marshes and our bay with you. You can also take away some cool gifts from our Oyster Festival Gift Shop! Happy Shucking,

Vicky Joyce, President / Arcata Main Street Nancy Stephenson, Event Coordinator / Oyster Festival

L ocal ocal E ntertainment ntertainment Absynth Quartet melds the

familiar and the avant-garde with a unique and provocative palette of tone and texture. This is streetcorner swing with a sense of humor, bluegrass with footstomping danceability, all intertwined with playful forays into the depths of sophisticated musical experimentation. The synergy of these seemingly divergent styles ends up sounding something like Yonder Mountain String Band meets Phish ... with a little bit of firelit gypsy caravan folk thrown in for good measure. The Eugene Weekly places the sound "somewhere along the spectrum of acoustic-improvisational-gypsy-jazz ... with a dash of Eastern European exoticism that puts you in a smoky, understated hash bar kind of mood." Listening to the AQ is akin to being served an exotic meal (or mind-altering beverage) one could never hope to replicate at home. You have to go out for this kind of stuff. In a new addition to the always-popular Oyster Festival, Arcata Main Street (AMS) invited Humboldt State’s Advanced Illustration students to develop posters, graphics and branding for the 2016 Arcata Bay Oyster Festival.

Jacqui Langeland The project was presented to students as an optional assignment for credit, offering students a client-based opportunity to develop images for posters, T-shirts and merchandise. To add to the real-world application of their projects, students with selected designs helped coordinate production details with Arcata print shops.

Nine students participated, submitting 11 designs. A number of the proposed posters ended up being very popular, making choosing just one very difficult. Input was received during Arcata Main Street’s Oyster Festival Kick-Off/Office Opening party, during Arts! Arcata in March, and later on Facebook. Travis Nguyen

Ultimately, one of Jacqui Langeland’s submissions was chosen as the signature image for the 2016 Oyster Festival. “The elegance, versatility, naturalness and feedback we’ve gotten about this design helped us finally make a choice,” said Event Director Nancy Stephenson. “Posters, T-shirts, sweatshirts, aprons and more are being developed with variations of the artwork.” Because the submissions are of such high quality, AMS decided to utilize more than one design, offering a collection of art and merchandise to the public surrounding the Oyster Festival, all produced locally, with pre-sales available online and in town. Special thanks to students Jacqui Langeland, Amanda Freemantle, Sadie Finney, Travis Nguyen, Julia Rodriguez, Becca Baldwin, Marie Campfield, Clarissa Maria King and Claire Stephenson for their time and talent with the proposals, and art professor Brandice Guerra for her role as art director, mentor and client representative. “I think this was a great experience for the student illustrators,” said Guerra. “Those who participated were super excited about the opportunity and remained engaged throughout the project. It gave them a taste of what it’s like to be part of a real design process where they have to collaborate with an art director. It also allowed them to get feedback from someone outside of our classroom, which is a very valuable experience for them.” Arcata Main Street hopes to do this again next year, since the quality of the artwork was outstanding, and getting HSU students involved in the downtown community is a big win for everyone.
