LOVE IN STEREO REMI BENNETT

WILLOW GREENE The approach of March calls for our thirteenth issue of Mad Sounds, and...wow! I cannot believe how far we've come. Thinking about all our previous features with so many talented creatives, I am constantly astonished by the amazing talent of the young artists we feature. March marks a monumental milestone for Mad Sounds, as we've recently hit over 5 million impressions on our publication. Thinking back to our start in 2013, my adolescent self would not be able

to fathom 5 million people viewing our publication, let alone reading and submitting to the very magazine I started in my junior year of high school. Nonetheless; our thirteenth issue explores the theme "Love in Stereo", as inspired by Sky Ferreira. This month, I challenge you to fall in love; whether that be exploring your passion or learning to love life itself we encourage our viewers to find love in March--wherever that may take you. Here's to a great spring, and an even greater issue of Mad Sounds! Giselle Melendres Founding Editor-in-Chief & Creative Director

"Never should you be committed to someone and feel dejected at the same time. Always remember that the most important person to commit to is yourself."

Love provokes many different emotions. You can be in love and still feel extreme discomfort. You can love your ex-boyfriend/girlfriend and still have no respect for him/her. You can not make yourself stop loving someone.Love comes naturally. It is not forced upon people and it can not be knocked out of someone. NO. 13 — LOVE IN STEREO

I stand out like a rose among thorns when I am with your friends. I am the girl in neon prints among them In their pleated skirts and crisp white blouses. They are bland and timid, Yet they crave attention but play dumb. I am colorful and audacious, and my intelligence is one of the only things I have going for me. I see everything-I am a constant viewer, Omnipotent, you could say. Your inadvertent flirting is the antithesis of sublime. I feel like I am drowning, always. I think your world is pinning me down and taking me by the throat, I don’t know if I can handle it.

It’s worse than a blade through the intestines, or a failed standardized test. More agonizing than menstrual cramps or a hangover after getting shitfaced the night prior. I’m losing my grip, and slowly but surely losing myself. All because of what I have seen. I have seen you touching me, Kissing me, loving me. Cradling me, soothing me, screwing me. I have seen you touching her, Kissing her, loving her. Cradling me, soothing her, screwing her. Now all I can see is you haunting me.

NO. 13 — LOVE IN STEREO

“My style changes up all the time depending on my mood. I tend to gravitate towards black, of course, but I rock basically anything neutral or grey. I like to mix glamour with vintage and sometimes a little bit of grunge.” HI KERSTYN, THANKS FOR SITTING DOWN WITH US HERE AT MAD SOUNDS TODAY. TO BEGIN, TELL US ABOUT A DAY IN THE LIFE OF KERSTYN INOUYE: On a work day (which is three days a week) I get up around 7am, get ready, and head over to REBEL8. At REBEL8, I work on styling, creating content, and basically anything else to do with marketing. On my off days I am either shooting new styles, heading to events, or working on projects for my blog. The weekends you can catch me enjoying the nightlife in Hollywood. You never know who you’re going to run in to!

YOU’RE THE FOUNDER AND CREATIVE MIND BEHIND DIPPEDINBLACK.COM, WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO CREATE THE SITE? I had really good feedback from all of the outfit posts I was making on Instagram, so I figured it’d be cool to keep an archive of all my favorite fits. Also, it allows me to share multiple photos from the set instead of just sharing one via Instagram. HOW DID THE NAME “DIPPED IN BLACK’ ORIGINALLY COME TO BE? Honestly, it just kind of came to me one day. I wanted to incorporate the fact that I was known for wearing black all the time. The other option was ‘drenched in black’, but I feel like Dipped In Black was a better decision. AS A FASHION BLOGGER AND STYLE GURU, HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR PERSONAL STYLE? My style changes up all the time depending on my mood. I tend to gravitate towards black, of course, but I rock basically anything neutral or grey. I like to mix glamour with vintage and sometimes a little bit of grunge. WHO ARE YOUR BIGGEST STYLE ICONS? I love Danielle from We Wore What and Desi Perkins. They are mega babes!

YOU’RE AN LOS ANGELES BASED STYLIST AND BLOGGER; WHAT DO YOU LIKE MOST ABOUT THE L.A. LIFESTYLE? I love that LA always has something going on. I always have to be busy, so LA allows me to stay on my feet 24/7.

Top shop, Nasty Gal, and Forever 21 INSPIRED BY ONE OF YOUR GREY POSTS, “DO YOU EVER LOOK UP?”, WHAT ARE SOME OF THE GREATEST LESSONS YOU’VE LEARNED FROM PHOTOGRAPHERS OVER THE YEARS? They never stop creating, and I love that. IF YOU COULD ONLY SHOP AT ONE STORE FOR THE REST OF YOUR LIFE, WHERE WOULD IT BE? I’m torn between Top Shop and Nasty Gal. I could live in those stores forever!

My wardrobe essentials consist of high waist black skinnies, leather jacket, a body con dress, black booties and a vintage graphic tee. You can dress them up or down and go from day to night. IF YOU COULD STEAL ONE PERSON’S CLOSET, WHO’S WOULD IT BE? Danielle from We Wore What. She has the most AMAZING pieces from all sorts of designers. Closet envy for sure. “Fashion is a way to really express yourself. It allows me to create the person that I truly want to be and be represented as.” WHAT IS YOUR LEAST FAVORITE FASHION TREND?

DO YOU HAVE ANY UPCOMING PROJECTS THAT OUR VIEWERS SHOULD LOOK OUT FOR? I am getting bored with the typical “street style” looks that every blogger is doing. I’m ready to set myself apart and make a statement in the fashion industry. Watch out for some conceptual shoots coming soon. WHAT DOES FASHION MEAN TO YOU? Fashion is a way to really express your self. It allows me to create the person that I truly want to be and be represented as. DO YOU HAVE ANY LAST ADVICE FOR ASPIRING BLOGGERS, STYLISTS, OR CREATIVES IN GENERAL? Network, network, network! It truly is about who you know, and who you have good relationships with. Have an inviting personality and be open to working with new people!

Hmmm, I think the worst trend that came about is ugg boots and wearing leggings as pants. WHAT HAVE BEEN YOUR FAVORITE COLLABORATIONS ACROSS INSTAGRAM AND DIPPEDINBLACK.COM? I have collaborated with SO many talented individuals and companies, but every time I link up with my best friend who runs House of CCUOCO, the imagery is always top notch.

LIZ STRUPAT

NO. 13 — LOVE IN STEREO

Meet Liz Strupat, a Laguna Beach based lifestyle and swimwear photographer with a passion for the unique and enchanting. A photographer of mermaids--Liz sits down with us to talk about her life in Laguna Beach and her creative aspriations. Read the exclusive interview to learn more about the voice behind the lens.

HEY LIZ, THANKS FOR SITTING DOWN WITH US HERE AT MAD SOUNDS TODAY, TO START OFF TELL US ABOUT A DAY IN THE LIFE OF LIZ STRUPAT? To be honest, every day is different and that’s a big reason why I love this job. Usually its some combination of answering loads of emails, scrolling the feeds for mood board inspiration, and trying to finish out the daywith a shoot at the beach. The best part of the day is honestly seeing who has reached out to me to work on a new project. I love the excitement of a new collaboration.

HOW DID YOU FIRST DISCOVER YOUR PASSION FOR PHOTOGRAPHY? I've always had a propensity for art. Photography entered my life in high school when I was thinking about colleges. Originally, I had wanted to pursue filmmaking, but I fell out of love with it and drifted into the world of still images. Being able to control the final outcome so much more is what excited me. It meant that I could really take people somewhere with an image and that's what I wanted to do all along. WHO ARE SOME OF YOUR FAVORITE PHOTOGRAPHERS? Tyrone Lebon, Petra Collins, Henrik Purriene, Tim Walker

YOU’RE A LAGUNA BEACH BASED FASHION PHOTOGRAPHER, WHAT IS THE LAGUNA LIFESTYLE LIKE? It’s quite a unique experience. The concept of ‘perfection’ is a bit different in Orange County. I think there are a lot of negative stereotypes that are associated with this place—fake boobs, unhealthy body image, and prideful behavior are just some. Having grown up here, I think I can have a sense of humor about it though. My style focuses on the opposite of that stereotype and I try to keep everything very natural.

WHERE DO YOU FIND INSPIRATION FOR YOUR PHOTOS? Favorite photographers. I love the way that Tyrone Lebon manipulates lighting. He makes studio settings dreamy/strange/ultimately not boring. Beyond that, I find inspiration everywhere, from a certain clothing item to a model to a new location. Everything can be inspiring. It's just a matter of how you look at the world.

NO. 13 — LOVE IN STEREO

“I wanted to look at swimwear from a female perspective where the motive is more about the fashion, or just the idea of snapshot of your friends. I don't feel like there are that many people doing that.” YOU SHOOT A WIDE VARIETY OF BEACH ANDSWIMWEAR FASHION BASED PHOTOGRAPHY, WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO TAKE ON THIS PARTICULAR FIELD OF PHOTOGRAPHY?

Leaving uni, we were encouraged to think about a niche that we could fill. Where do we fit in the market? During my time living in London, I realized how much I needed to be near the beach because that’s where I can produce work that really speaks of who I am. Naturally, this became swimwear photography. The swimwear niche also interested me because it's completely over sexualized because so many of the photographers are male and have a male perspective. I wanted to look at swimwear from a female perspective where the motive is more about the fashion or just the idea of snapshot of your friends. I don't feel like there are that many people doing that.

WHAT DO YOU HOPE TO PORTRAY WITHIN YOUR PHOTOGRAPHY? It can definitely vary from shoot to shoot. Sometimes I want the vibe to be dreamier and more surreal and sometimes I just want the photos to look more candid--moments from a fun day with your friends. WHICH HAS BEEN YOUR FAVORITE SHOOT THAT YOU HAVE DONE THUS FAR? This is definitely a tough one, so I'm going to have go with the top three in no particular order. First is a final project from uni, an editorial shoot called Weirdo's Club. Then, Laurel Thoma for Kokoa Swim in the summer time was an example of when every roll of film I took was spectacular. Last, would be a shoot I did with a girl named Toni at sunrise last year at these pools carved into the rocks near the ocean. DO YOU PRIMARILY ENJOY SHOOTING IN DIGITAL OR FILM? 35mm film. I would avoid digital completely if I could, but it's 2016.

“Be persistent. [...] You’ll get there, even if you’re the last one standing. It doesn’t matter if you’re original or you’re the first to do something." IF YOU COULD CREATE YOUR DREAM SHOOT, WHAT WOULD IT CONSIST OF?

HOW HAS INSTAGRAM INFLUENCED YOUR CAREER/PASSION FOR PHOTOGRAPHY, AND WHAT IMPACT HAS IT MADE ON YOUR LIFE THUS FAR? Instagram is the only social media I've ever used for my photography and I love it. I think it's so great to get feedback not only from your friends, but from people all over the world. I love how easy it is to find new people to shoot with and become inspired. DO YOU HAVE ANY LAST ADVICE FOR ASPIRING PHOTOGRAPHERS OR CREATIVES IN GENERAL? Be persistent. I’m a very big believer in not letting anything or anyone get in the way of what you want. You’ll get there, even if you’re the last one standing. It doesn’t matter if you’re original or you’re the first to do something. You just have to be the most famous person to do that thing and I think a lot of that is down to being persistent.

Young Kate Moss, Versailles, giant couture wardrobe/mixed with sportswear basics. IN YOUR OPINION, WHAT MAKES A 'GOOD' PHOTOGRAPH? A photo that makes me wonder how they achieved that or a photo that transports you to another moment or place is great to me.

NO. 13 — LOVE IN STEREO

Meet Kingston, an L.A. based photographer and world traveler, whose work has seen the face of Cadillac, No Cure Magazine, and many more. Today we sat down with Kingston and talked about his photographic inspiration, traveling, and his advice for creative adventure. Read on to learn more about @kingstonphoto, and his passion for creative innovation.

HI KINGSTON, THANKS FOR SITTING DOWN WITH US HERE AT MAD SOUNDS TODAY. TO START OFF, DESCRIBE TO US A DAY IN THE LIFE OF @KINGSTONPHOTO Well it just is dependent on the day, everyday seems different. But as I saddle up for the trip I'm about to take hours after this gets handed in, I'll be on the road and gearing up the Jeep to travel 5 days to Nevada, Southern Utah and Northern Arizona! Everyday is prep for the next day. HOW DID YOU FIRST DISCOVER YOUR PASSION FOR PHOTOGRAPHY? I actually discovered not by choice! I was an “art kid” so I spent a lot of my time in the those classrooms vs sports or whatever else you do in high school. I took all the art classes I could, and ended up not having anymore to take junior year. So my teachers suggested photography classes. and well--it was determined then that's what I was going to do for the rest of my life.

WHAT PRIMARILY INSPIRES YOUR PHOTOGRAPHS? A lot has to do with nature, and traveling. as you travel more and more you learn that theres just sooooo much more to see. so you want to do it more and more and thats what gets me pumped on all my travel / outdoor photography. Which is my favorite. but i do like shoot portraits a lot and i really like combining those two worlds. So i just drive my inspirations from my locations and the vibes it has while I'm there. WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR FAVORITE SHOOTING LOCATIONS? Tahiti was a favorite, its gorgeous there and i got to spend a lot of time while being there to see the island. so that will be up there but in the states i think my favorite place is yosemite. it never gets old. but there are some places on my list that could beat any of those places! just gotta get out there.

"Most of the people who come from New Hampshire usually don't stray very far from it, so if I can get out and do all the awesome stuff I'm doing, why cant anyone else? I hope that shows anyone can do what they want--it just takes some effort." WHAT DIFFERENT MESSAGES/FEELINGS DO YOU HOPE TO PORTRAY WITH YOUR PHOTOS?

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE TYPE OF PHOTOGRAPHY? I think I prefer landscapes, it allows me to travel and be able to just enjoy both taking photos and experiencing the places I go. WHO ARE SOME OF YOUR FAVORITE PHOTOGRAPHERS? Ansel Adams & Mario Testino. I dont follow many photographers, solely to not get too inspired by other peoples work. but those two are just masters at their craft. YOU’VE COLLABORATED WITH ONE OF THE LARGEST BRANDS IN THE WORLD: CADILLAC--WHAT WAS IT LIKE SHOOTING FOR THE COMPANY? It's awesome, that partnership is so fun. For being a car i grew up around I never thought I'd end up working with them. But here I am. It goes to show you just gotta get out there and put in some effort! They're some real comfy cars though, I'll tell you that.

Honestly I hope people see my story and want to crete their own. I came from an unlikely place to end up where I'm at. Most of the people who come from New Hampshire usually don't stray very far from it, so if I can get out and do all the awesome stuff I'm doing, why cant anyone else? I hope that shows anyone can do what they want--it just takes some effort. WHICH HAS BEEN ONE OF YOUR FAVORITE PHOTOSHOOTS/COLLABORATIONS THUS FAR? A fun one I just did was with Asics, they had a “On the road” themed shoe collab they did with Bodega, and they left it up to me to interrupt that in my own way. So I drove out to Nevada and went to Mt. Charleston and valley of fire. I really liked the end product.

"Just work hard, nothing will be given to you. This applies to pretty much everything. Big advocate of the self starters and people who just do what they want to do!" YOUR PHOTOGRAPHS ARE FILLED WITH SEEMINGLY SURREAL VIEWS ACROSS THE WORLD, WHAT WAS YOUR FAVORITE PLACE THAT YOU HAD VISITED/DISCOVERED IN YOUR PHOTOS? I think if you revisit the fifth question you'll get your answer, but I think being in a location for a extended period of time gives you the opportunity to really experience each place.

IN YOUR OPINION, WHAT MAKES A 'GOOD' PHOTOGRAPH? Composition and light. KEY factors. HOW HAS INSTAGRAM INFLUENCED YOUR CAREER/PASSION FOR PHOTOGRAPHY AND WHAT IMPACT HAS IT MADE ON YOUR LIFE THUS FAR? IG is a huge bump in getting stuff out there. Before I got jobs, for sure, but not with bigger companies. I think IG opened those doors. DO YOU HAVE ANY UPCOMING PROJECTS THAT OUR VIEWERS SHOULD LOOK OUT FOR? Continue work with Cadillac, Asics and other brands! Camping season is upon us, so a lot more traveling to come! LASTLY, WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO ASPIRING PHOTOGRAPHERS OR CREATIVES SUCH AS YOURSELF? Just work hard, nothing will be given to you. This applies to pretty much everything. Big advocate of the self starters and people who just do what they want to do!

IF YOU COULD COMPOSE YOUR DREAM PHOTO SHOOT, WHAT WOULD IT CONSIST OF? That would be a hard one. I think I'd prefer to set up a road trips cross country with a couple models and just visit amazing places!
