An Important Email Marketing Tip; Seeing the Black Sky, and then Black Smoke…

What a Night… It was a beautiful night as we left the house: cold—around 22 degrees—but with a million stars shining from the pitch-black sky above us in the driveway. We were invited to a little party by some of the people who board their horses at our farm. Dad started the van engine, and right away… …there was a loud squealing. Our knee-jerk reaction was to let it run for a minute, because on countless occasions, during damp weather, the engine squeals due to moisture on the serpentine belt. But, this time, we started to smell smoke. We popped the hood, and sure enough, there was the smoke—blowing right into my face. That was enough! Dad shut the engine down right away, and we fired up the old camper van and took it to the party. After all, how many warning signs do you need to shut an engine down before it does any more damage to itself? The following morning, I popped the hood open, and sure enough, I was able to see that the belt had broken. If we’d driven the van last night, we would have damaged the engine! I’ve always been a very observant person and a troubleshooter, so I’m always eager to learn about any and all warning signs—whether they be from an engine, or from my own body, or from the results of my email marketing.

Here’s One Important Email Marketing Tip I know I’ve written about this before now, but it’s worth repeating. This may seem counterintuitive, because most of us want our leads to like us, right? Here’s the reality, though; if you don’t regularly get notifications that somebody has un-subscribed from your list, then you’re doing something wrong. The reason for that is simple, and maybe you’ve heard this saying already: if you’re trying to please everybody, then you’re trying to please nobody. You need to just be who you really are: your complete, true self! When you do that, you’re not only going to offend people who are not like-minded off of your list… …you’re also going to increase the rapport with the people on your list who are like-minded. And, on that note, don’t be fazed by negative or abusive comments from un-subscribers (assuming you’re blogging, which you should be). Such things actually increase the “glue” that bonds like-minded people on your list to you, and just might move them to act the next time you send them an email that commands them to “join me today!” By bearing all this in mind, you will become a more confident communicator and a better leader, longterm. --Josh “Mad Thrad” Campbell P.S.
