Taos Ski Valley
& The Blake.
ModernLifestyles.vip 13
Nestled among the pristine peaks of
Northern New Mexico, Taos Ski Valley is one of North
America’s premier ski and snowboard destinations, with more than 305 inches of average annual snowfall and more than 110 trails. Taos Ski Valley has an unmistakable soul and mystique, a relaxed, friendly atmosphere, spectacular scenery and amazing terrain for every ability level – truly making the resort a world of its own. Taos Ski Valley has a rich history. A unique texture of European, Hispanic, and Native North American cultures meet in Taos. The ski valley was founded in 1954 by Ernie and Rhoda Blake. From a camper in the base area where they lived, the Blakes began to build what is now a world-class ski resort. The Blake family infused Taos Ski Valley with an approachability, sincerity, and focus on a true high alpine lifestyle, which visitors have recognized and loved for decades. The renowned Ernie Blake Snowsports School has a 60-year reputation as one of the best places to have fun while improving your skills. It is often said that “you don’t have to be an expert to ski Taos, but there’s no better place to become one!” And while there’s steep and deep terrain everywhere, 49% of the resort is rated beginner or intermediate from the top to bottom – providing plenty of trails for all skill levels.

And things continue to get even better! Two years ago, renovations and improvements began with the launch of the Kachina Peak Chair Lift, and continued last season with a new drop-off area that features views of the Sangre de Cristo mountains and a walkway with stores and services that line the path to the base area and lifts. The base area renovation will continue for the next several years and will include a variety of new retail areas, dining, and a plaza. The Blake at Taos Ski Valley is the long-awaited centerpiece of the Taos Ski Valley base area redevelopment. Opened in February 2017, the premier slope slide location offers incredible access to all the Ski Valley has to offer and brings a new level of sophistication to the area. The resort also recently completed a multi-million-dollar renovation of its Children’s Center, which includes the installation of a new beginner’s lift, development of state-of-the-art children’s beginner terrain, and installation of a gondola connecting the Children’s Center to the resort plaza.

And now direct flights from DallasFort Worth are available to make the trip even smoother. Taos Regional Airport began direct charter flight service to and from Austin International and Dallas-Love Field airports on December 20 and continues through the end of March. Taos Air starts around $400 round trip and can fly 30 passengers to and from Dallas every Thursday, Saturday, Sunday, or holiday Monday. “We’re supportive of the Town’s vision for the airport as a regional economic driver and premier tourist destination,” said David Norden, CEO of Taos Ski Valley, Inc. “Taos Air will now offer the closest, fastest, and earliest route to the Rockies from Texas, a thrilling development for skiers, snowboarders, and outdoor enthusiasts from that region.” There is so much to discover in Taos, including the Town of Taos, which is only about a 30-minute drive from the resort. Sitting at almost 7,000 feet, the small town is home to some of the most spectacular recreational activities, dining, and shopping experiences in New Mexico. Historic adobe homes, earthships, an ancient acequia system, worldclass skiing, and a thriving arts community are all things that visitors can look forward to when visiting Taos. Renowned sculptor Brad Oldham, well known for the Traveling Man installation in Deep Ellum, and his partner Christy Coltrin designed and handcrafted the Spirit of Park Place awards for Best of Show, Chairman’s Award and Salesmanship Club Award winners. Craig and Laura Hopkins of Dallas took “Best of Show” in the Collectors Concours for their 1936 MercedesBenz 500 K Special Roadster. “The supercharged Mercedes-Benz 500 K was delivered new to The Netherlands,” explained Craig Hopkins. “But the car’s body was completely destroyed during World War II. An American soldier sent the wreckage home, where it sat unrepaired for many years. It made its way back to Europe decades later where a Danish baron performed the first restoration in the late 1980s. The car was the pride of his automobile museum for 20 years. In 2012 his collection was liquidated and the car came to Texas. The baron’s work was replaced with coachwork by master fabricator Cass Nawrocki. It took seven years

Of perhaps 25 to 30 created, only eight received the elegant covered-spare bodywork appearing on this car.” Raymond Larson and his 1964 Aston Martin DB5 took home the Chairman’s Award, and the Salesmanship Club Award went to Greg Brendel for his 1963 Ferrari 250 GT Lusso. In addition to the fabulous cars on display, guests enjoyed shopping and special experiences at several retail pop up stops in the Celebrity Cruises Captains Lounge inside the Porsche Pavilion, including Bachendorf’s, Jack Black, Cuvee Coffee, Alice + Olivia, St. John, Trina Turk, Theory, Perks & Provisions, Renegade Cigars and the City of Irving.

The people of Ann Arbor, Michigan know something that the rest of us don’t. That their town is a thriving community of restaurants, wine bars, craft breweries, a meadery, cocktail bars, markets, specialty retail stores, history and a rich arts scene. Just a long weekend can leave you itching to return to fill in with all the things you missed. Here is an itinerary, loosely based on the one I followed on a recent media visit. Some locations hosted us, but the opinionated opinions are firmly my own.
ModernLifestyles.vip 47
GETTING THERE - Is easy, thanks to Detroit airport being equidistant between its namesake and Ann Arbor. From there, you will likely want to rent a car to have maximum flexibility. You could bus into town and use Uber or Lyft to get around. The downtown locations are best walked (the city is alive at street level). DAY ONE - Lunch at Ayse’s Turkish Café, a small, family-run restaurant dating back to 1993 that also does takeout, delivery, and catering. The Lentil Soup ($3.50/$4.50)) is highly recommended. It is made in the thick and chunky idiom of a meat and vegetable soup but with the distinctive taste and crumbly texture of lentils. A topping of pomegranate seeds adds not just color, but a fruity taste. Other memorable dishes were the earthy sautéed baby eggplant ($4.25), the heartwarming stuffed pepper with lamb (Turkish cooking has a strong suite in lamb), and a Vegetarian Stuffed Pepper tasty enough for a carnivore. The craft beer movement has taken off like wildfire in the area and we start with a tour of two. A short car ride from Ann Arbor is the township of Ypsilanti and the 734 Brewing Company. There, owner Patrick Echlin and Head Brewer Mariah Gavin along with help from close friends take an enterprise to the next level that until just a few months before was in Patrick’s basement. Try the Flight Paddle ($9) to get a handle (no pun intended) on the current offerings and then pick the beer you like best.
being an acronym formed from the first letters of the five Great Lakes that touch Michigan (Huron, Ontario, Michigan, Erie, and Superior). The tasting facility has both indoor and outdoor seating and decoration by local street artist Paolo Pedini. Head brewer Nick Panchame focuses on hoppy beers, kettle sours and barrel aged sours. tribute but they do can and bottle to sell from the brewery. The food is great, on account of them choosing a local Thai restaurant No Thai to provide it. As well as good beer, HOMES provides a cool place to hang out indoors and watch the game in Winter, or on the patio in summer. Non beer drinks (local spirits, wines, and non-alcoholic) are provided for non beer drinkers.

Other breweries to consider are Wolverine State Brewing Company where the specialty is lager. Jolly Pumpkin Artisan Ales, and Arbor Brewing Company. An unusual drinks producer that is a fun tasting is Bløm Meadworks.Jardiniére EVENING - One dinner option is Frita Batidos. Cuban inspired but, in owner Eve Aronoff’s words, not Cuban. She actually trained at Le Cordon Bleu in Paris and was influenced by several styles of cooking while in Miami (Chinese, Spanish, Creole and African). The centerpiece is picking your frita (a chorizo burger, typically adorned with cracklicious extras like fried egg, muenster cheese, thick-cut bacon, or avocado spread), then choose your batido (a tropical milkshake) and any sides you fancy. Its inexpensive, soul-satisfying food. Another, is at the more formal end of the scale. The Standard Bistro and Larder is all wood beams, black and white patterned tile work and Art Deco style. Dining is white tablecloth with a menu that is actually less formal, country French. The web site does a terrible job of impressing on the diner just how remarkable this chef is. Chef/Owner Alex Young is one of those highly motivated souls who is self-taught. Born in London, he worked his way up through restaurants in New York, San Francisco, and Pennsylvania before moving to Michigan to be closer to family. He ran into the founders of the famous Zingerman’s restaurant empire (Ari Weinzweig and Paul Saginaw) and pitched an idea to them that would become Zingerman’s Roadhouse. That was 2003 and the beginning of a 13-year stretch that included a James Beard award in the Best Chefs ModernLifestyles.vip 49

Food lovers could also head back to town and visit Fustini’s Oil and Vinegars, the Ann Arbor branch of a small (five location) Michigan chain of oil and vinegar specialists. Each product is sold from a large stainless steel keg and sampling is encouraged. Started by Jim Milligan, a Michiganian with international business experience, he saw the idea in action in Europe and started it as a retirement project here. As well as products, Fustini’s also offers an extensive range of cooking classes. DINNER can be at Gratzi, a northern Italian restaurant spectacularly located in an old theatre (including tables on the balcony!). The restaurant is operated by Mainstreet Ventures, an Ann Arbor-
based company that focuses on developing restaurants in downtown areas. As a pasta lover, at Gratzi I really enjoyed the classic Fettuccini Alfredo and the Ravioli Fritti. Afterwards, head to The Last Word cocktail bar, voted the best craft cocktail bar in Michigan by Radio Michigan. The speakeasy-style basement-level bar specializes in locally-produced spirits.
and then alight on them to give Taste Kitchen a modern, edgy feel. There is food, mulled wine, holiday gifts and fire pits to keep warm. It’s really the atmosphere created by the throng cheese (six ways!), and hearty London Broil. That said, a vegetarian/vegan can eat really well here with each menu item flagged for acceptability.
DAY THREE - Breakfast at Detroit Street Filling Station. A pure vegan café which treats breakfast as the first class meal that non-vegan establishments do. Try Seitan “chick’n”, fried plantains, roasted yukon gold potatoes, cashew sour cream, and corn tortillas. Next, n to the quirky TeaHaus, owned by Lisa McDonald. She is a Tea Sommelier, certified by the International Tea Masters Association. As well as teaching on the finer points of tea selection, preparation, and serving she has 180 different varieties for sale. Zingerman’s Roadhouse is one of the most iconic restaurants in Ann Arbor, and a must stop. Created in 2003 by owners Paul Saginaw and Ari Weinzweig based on a concept preparation by Alex Young (now at The Standard, as described earlier) who became the opening chef and stayed 13 years, it bills itself as an American brasserie. It won a James Beard Foundation Award. Best Macaroni and Cheese on Alton Brown’s TV show Best Of. Top 10 2009 New Barbecue Restaurants in Bon Appetit. In 2017 Bob Bennett took over as executive chef. The menu is pure comfort food with platesquashing burgers, sensuous mac-n-
of humanity in the nippy weather that makes it so special. A related festival is Midnight Madness. Downtown shops are open until midnight with carollers, street performers, and carriage rides, and all proceeds from donations go to charity. Taste Kitchen is one of the highest-rated restaurants in Ann Arbor. At weekends it is a packed, boisterous, din of people all enjoying chef Danny Van’s eclectic New American style food. Van will watch for the waves of culinary change
DAY FOUR - Bad news -- we leave! And we haven’t even found time to visit ‘The Big House’ (the University of Michigan football stadium), discuss the formative ways that the presence of the university (and other universities) transforms the area, visited any local artisans, toured Zingerman’s Creamery, unlocked Miss Kim, listened to a classic Symphony at Hill Auditorium, or shared cherries together. That is because Ann Arbor has so much to offer that just one long weekend trip cannot cover it.

The Renaissance Hotel Dallas is an architecturally unforgettable hotel. The ‘lipstick building’ (as it is popularly known) is also a very well equipped and managed hotel, as I found out at a recent media event. Visitors to Market Center already know it’s the place to stay for large rooms, fast Internet, exquisitely comfortable beds, one of the best restaurants in the area (Asador), and a killer bar scene set around a tequila tower with over 60 selections. But a lot more Dallas visitors would benefit from a stay at the Renaissance Dallas Hotel. It is only two miles from the American Airlines Center for Mavericks Basketball and headline music acts from Elton John to Eric Clapton’s Guitar Festival.

2019 THE BEST OF FALL Paris Fashion Week
62 ModernLifestyles.vip
Paris Fashion Week Runway 2019 Louis Vuitton
The Centre Pompidou, Paris’ epicenter of modern and contemporary art, served as a primary source of inspiration for Nicolas Ghesquière this season, as did “Culture” more loosely, which he describes as “what we see, what we accept, what we learn. What’s left to us...” And rather than look to the oh-so-haute Louvre, the designer chose a more urban, modern, downtown approach. As his show notes began, “perceptions shift...” And shift they did, although Ghesquière’s girl is still the tough, mini-skirt-wearing girl she has been for seasons. For Fall 2019, the designer paired bold shoulders, ruffles, sparkles, and other fanciful elements with grungier street elements for a mix that feels resemblant of the streets. He also played with a piece of every bold tone for a reason—”Green is water, blue is air, yellow is electricity. Red is human.”—but used them sporadically. For the most part, this is still the cool-kid Vuitton girl you’ve come to know and love; she’s just expanding her horizons.

Television screens surrounded the Miu Miu runway, looping old school VHS imagery including such disparate themes as Mariah Carey, random nudes, cats, and blooming flowers. The whole look was very mid-‘90s MTV. The clothing vibed on that idea a bit but not too literally with a cool, young mix—camo and shearling jackets, some pop floral slim maxi skirts, layered leather mini skirts, and sheer puff sleeve mini dresses. A black velvet cape and anorak cape-jacket hybrids were standouts. At the end of the show, models walked to Dolly Patton’s rendition of “Stairway to Heaven,” further proof that sometimes it’s the unexpected pairings that really soar.

Paris Fashion Week Runway 2019 CHANEL
Karl Lagerfeld’s final collection for Chanel, designed before he passed away last month, walked at the Grand Palais today on a bed of faux snow, next to trees and charming chalet houses against a backdrop of snow capped mountains. A moment of silence and a recording of the posthumous designer speaking before the collection walked served as tribute—but as a drawing of Coo Chanel and Karl Largerfeld sketched by the late designer at each seat read, “The Beat Goes On.” Chanel is a joyous brand and this collection brought that joy, après-ski style. The Chanel woman is a true traveler, who requires a wardrobe for each of her fabulous destinations, including the world’s chicest mountaintops. Whether that be Gstaad, Aspen, or Hokkaido, she’s certainly covered in puffer jackets, black and white tweeds, white suiting, a furry snow cape, fair isle sweaters and snow boots, bien sur. Penelope Cruz helped close the show in an ice queen-worthy mini dress before models walked to0 “We Could Be Heroes” by David Bowie, the same song which closed Karl’s last show for Fendi in Milan. Karl will always be missed but he was most certainly still felt today 72 ModernLifestyles.vip

It’s been ten years since the Panamera proved itself a sleeper among executive sedans. Porsche isn’t letting the anniversary go unnoticed, keeping the series in the public eye by way of a special cosmetics and features package: the Ten Years Edition. Most notable to the edition—which is available on the Panamera 4, the Panamera 4 E-Hybrid, and the basic Panamera—is the series of options that come as standard with the package. The list is pretty extensive, and includes safety features like lane assist and blind-spot warning, as well as Porsche Active Suspension Management system and Power Steering Plus. ParkAssist, upsell seats, a Bose surround system, and LED matrix headlamps are also included.

The cosmetics alterations included in the package loudly declare the car’s provenance. Panamera 10 badging, 21-inch wheels in metallic white, and special black-and-gold scheme cabin are among the flourishes included with the 10 Years Edition Panamera variants. The base sticker for the entry-level Panamera 10 Years Edition is around $103K. That’s about a $15K premium over the regular production entry-level Panamera.

BENTLEY
FLYING SPUR
BLACKLINE
The shadowy twin to the Bentley Flying Spur can now be ordered with the Blackline treatment. The special cosmetics package replaces nearly all the chrome accents on the Flying Spur with black finish, from the Flying B hood ornament to the exhaust outlets.

The list of trim items covered by Blackline trim also includes the vents, window surrounds, ‘blade’ embellishments on the rear bumper, headlamp and taillamp surrounds, door handles, grille elements, and door handles. 92 ModernLifestyles.vip
The W12 badging remains chrome, proudly shining out that essential feature of the topend touring car. The massive powerplant delivers up to 626 horsepower and 664 lbft of torque, enough to propel the Flying Spur to a top speed of 207 MPH.
Wheels featured in the Blackline Specification can be optioned as the Mulliner 22” units, but the package comes standard with Bentley’s 21” rims.
