N
ine year oldJayden Perezwho has touched the world with his kindness and little heart. Jayden Perez keeps helping Puerto Rico Recently he sent baby food to the babies in Puerto Rico that were affected by the hurricane. He is really making a difference. Jayden has also been selected recently to be part of Kid Box in New York. He has been chosen to be one of the kids Board of Directors for Kid Box. This 9 year old has touched the world with his kindness and a big heart. He has also been nominated in Canada to receive a Humanitarian award and has also been nominated to receive the Puerto Rican Flag in his honor. He is our tomorrow leader. How are you doing? I am doing
very well. I am excited that school ended because I can now enjoy my summer vacation. When did you first realize you wanted to help people and what inspired you to help people? I first realized I wanted to help people when the hurricane in Puerto Rico affected the island so badly. I saw on the news how people lost their homes, had no food, no lights, and were just crying about how much they lost. I really felt bad because it was around Christmas and I knew that the little kids in Puerto Rico weren’t going to have a happy Christmas. I thought about just giving all my Christmas toys to them, but my mom said that would not be enough. We then came up with the idea of a toy drive. I wanted to collect, as many toys as I could and deliver them to all the kids that were sad and affected by the hurricane. What inspired me more to help people was seeing all the volun-
teers that helped me during the toy drive and also deliver toys as well. All I could think about was how happy the kids were going to be when I delivered it to them. Did you have any fear of helping people? Yes, I was afraid that the toys were not going to get to Puerto Rico, but my mom helped me create a Go Fund Me page to raise money to ship all the boxes to Puerto Rico. We also created the Go Fund Me page so people could donate money for the people in Puerto Rico that needed food, water, or any necessities. What is your favorite part about helping people? My favorite part about helping people is seeing the smiles on their faces at the end of the day. It warms my heart up so much. Where do you see yourself in ten years? I see myself in college hopefully following my dreams of becoming an architect. What do you want to be when you grow up? When I grow up I WWW.MAELLEKIDS.COM

Jayden Perez NINE YEAR OLD PHILANTHROPIST want to be an architect. I always love to build stuff with my legos. What was your greatest moment so far? My greatest moment so far was getting to go to Puerto Rico and deliver all the toys that were collected from the toy drive and give them to the children. What events do you have coming up? The events I have coming up is going for 3 days to NY to be part of Kid Box Board of Director and helping the charity Action Against Hunger. I plan to start collecting and buying Lanterns to send to Puerto Rico. It is hurricane season and I’m scared they might lose power again. I want to make sure some people will have lanterns in case it happens. What is your favorite book and author? My favorite book is Dog Man. I have three of them. Dav Pilkey is my favorite author. Are you excited about starting a new School year? No, I am not ready for school yet. I am trying to enjoy a little of my summer but I am still keeping up with reading my summer reading. Do you have a favorite subject in school? My favorite subject in school would have to be math. I 6 MAELLE KIDS MAGAZINE ISSUE 2
am very good at it. How can our readers find you online? Well if you Google me online but if you want to see my journey with Puerto Rico, you can visit my mom Instagram @anarosado09 and her Facebook, which is Ana Rosado.
Would you ever run for president? I would absolutely run for president. That would give me a bigger opportunity to make a difference in the world and help more people. If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go? If I could travel anywhere in the world, it would be Lego Land in Florida. It has always been my dream to visit Lego Land and see
the giant pieces of Lego statues, meet Lego characters, and go on rides. How important is social media? Social media is very important to me because I can share my journey, while also spreading my message about how important it is to give back to people in need. Social media helped me spread my message about Puerto Rico and with everyone liking and sharing it, more people were able to see it and help me during my toy drive and collecting food. Social media also helps me reach out to people who are also giving back and support them. I was able to find a non-profit organization that was collecting food for the babies of Puerto Rico and helps the woman out by bringing her baby food. Any closing words? At the end of the day, it is important for people to come together and help people who are in need. My mission is to put a smile on everyone’s face. I want everyone to be happy and know that there will always be a helping hand out there for them. From the bottom of my heart

Giles-Paley Phillips
East Sussex UK children book author exclusive interview. Where are you from? A little town in East Sussex UK, called Seaford. How was life growing up for you? Life was quite unsettled after my mother passed away when I was 6 years old, so, family life was never quite the same again. Where do you get your ideas? Ideas come from all sorts of places, my kids, the news, overheard conversations, all kinds of places really. What is your writing process like? I don't really have a set routine, but I always carry a notebook and pencil with me in case an idea comes to mind. What are your top favorite books you wrote? My favorite book is probably The Fearsome Beastie as it was my first ever picture book What are your thoughts on the current state of the publishing industry? It is a very tough market at the moment and publishers are becoming increasingly risk adverse instead investing in celebrity books and well-known authors, so it's incredibly difficult to get your work away. What made you become an author? I decided to become a writer after the birth of our first son, I just really wanted to write a story for him How do you separate yourself from other authors? I suppose a lot of my books have darker subject matter and I tend to like challenging books
If you could tell your younger writing self anything, what would it be? Start writing earlier, when I was a lot younger! How long does it take you to write a book? It varies greatly, some books I've written in less than a day and others, like some novels I've been working on have taken months and months to complete. Who is your favorite author and why? My favorite children's author is Shel Silverstein, his work has always been a huge inspiration. What advice do you have for younger authors? Read lots of books and write about what you love and interests you What project do you have coming up? I'm currently working on a podcast series talking to people about those moments when we go blank, that might be writer's block, losing an audience, forgetting your lines, or missing a penalty, and we're going to explore those things and see how people overcome those moments How can we buy your books? most good bookshops and Amazon etc.. How do you feel about technology like audible? I love audible, I'm a fan of podcasts and audio books, so it's great that we can access these formats easily, but nothing ever beats a good book. http://gilespaleyphillips.blogspot.co.uk
