elcome to the October edition of the Inside Shoreham and Southwick, Autumn has arrived and despite the chill in the air we still have some gorgeous sunshine! In this month’s issue you can read about Henry “ Gino” Watkins, British Artic explorer by Judy Upton. Autumn is time to start thinking about what to do in the garden as we head into the colder months. so of course Mark gives his latest tips on gardening this month. However, before you start gardening, local Shoreham Osteopath Jenny gives you great advice to prevent injury. We also have the latest advice from Louis Jones on how to spot sports hernia. With so many articles to read with helpful advice, we hope you enjoy this month’s edition. On a final note, I would like to thank all our contributors for this month and all the local businesses that you find within these pages. If you would like to have your event or activity in the November edition, please send copy by the 12th of October. We will endeavour to put it in the spotlight! I hope that you have a lovely October. Warm Regards

East Lions
Y
es! The Lions need you! Come and meet the Lions for a drink and a chat at the Crown and Anchor’s function room on Friday 19th October from 6:30-9pm. You may have read the informative pieces on their activities each month in the Inside magazine and thought ‘What worthy individuals!’ or ‘Very admirable but I don’t have the time to do that.’ Well, one of the Lions’ catchphrases is ‘Ordinary people, amazing things!’ Lions are people just like you, often with very busy lives but who want to do something to ‘pay back’, to help the local community (and further afield). Each Lion does what they can and, working together, manage to do some amazing things. So come and meet them and check out that this is all true. They are very friendly 4
and welcoming. You may end up deciding that this is something you can do. Some decide to become a Friend of Lions and help out as and when they can. Skills needed at the moment range from dressing up as an elf and entertaining children waiting to see Santa to being able to make a good cuppa for the tea socials. Bring a friend or two and the Lions will be pleased to see you. RSVP 08458-337356

Work to be completed on south side of Adur Ferry Bridge
T
he gateway to Shoreham Beach is about to receive the final finishing touches as the long awaited work to complete the Riverside car park regeneration gets underway. Work began on the10th September 2018, the work on the southern end of the Adur Ferry Bridge will last five weeks and complete the route over the river from the town centre to the beach. The work to the cycle path, recreational area and turning point for river access next to Lower Beach Road will last approximately five weeks, and during that time pedestrians and cyclists using the bridge will be diverted through a section of the car park. Whilst the Adur Ferry Bridge was completed in 2013, the work being carried out by Adur District
Council on the Shoreham beach side of the bridge has been delayed as due to access issues as a result of the Environmental Agency’s work on the Adur Tidal Walls scheme. Councillor Neil Parkin, Leader of Adur District Council said: “We are delighted that we can finally complete this work. It will not only be a big boost for businesses but mean more people can enjoy the unique environment of the beach.” Councillor Emma Evans, Adur District Council’s Executive Member for Environment, said: “The bridge has been such a positive addition to Shoreham, and putting the finishing touches to the southern end will be welcomed by everyone.”
Helping to save lives
L
ocal businesses and residents are being invited to support a fund-raising drive to install two life-saving defibrillators in Shoreham Town Centre. Shoreham Insurance Services has joined forces with the Chairman of Adur District Council, Cllr Joss Loader, to support her district-wide community defibrillator (AED) appeal. Although it was only launched a few weeks ago, the town centre appeal is already very close to raising enough money to purchase the first AED, earmarked for location outside The Bridge Inn on Shoreham High Street. This will be purchased from the Sussex Heart Charity. Shoreham Insurance Services, which has offices in John Street, launched the appeal last month. A company spokesman said: “One of the co-owners at Shoreham Insurance Services lost a close family member late last year due to a sudden and unexpected cardiac arrest. Defibrillator machines were discussed a few months later in the office and the idea of an appeal in the local area to raise funds to have a defibrillator installed externally was suggested. “To have these machines available 24/7 and also to raise the awareness of exactly what they are and how to use them is an excellent idea. Hopefully we can reach the target as this will allow two units to be installed within the local area. ” To donate, please use the link to the crowd-funding page at
Cllr Joss Loader launched her year-long Community Defibrillator Appeal to provide life-saving, publicly accessible machines across the towns and villages of Adur when she was elected as ADC Chairman in May. She said: “I would like to thank everyone at Shoreham Insurance Services for achieving so much in a very short period of time and also Imogen at The Bridge Inn for agreeing its location in the pub car park. “I am delighted to say that Shoreham Beach Residents’
Association has already installed two AEDs on Shoreham Beach in Ferry Road and at the Church of the Good Shepherd earlier this year. I am now working with local community groups to try to ensure that all areas have 24/7 access to these great machines. “I am doing this in memory of my late father, Brian Hollebone, who died very suddenly from a catastrophic heart attack more than 30 years ago, when defibrillators were not available. If just one resident’s life can be saved, I shall consider it a job very well done. “I have already had a very encouraging response and we are well on our way to raising enough money for the first machines across the district. “If you have any fund-raising ideas for any location across Adur, please do give me a call on 07838 379599.” Alternatively, you can email Joss at joss. email: ang@insideshoreham.com loader@adur.gov.uk

Double, double, toil and trouble… Kids make music with movement and bubbles
H
alf term will soon be upon us and I am looking forward to teaching an array of little wizards, witches, ghosts and ghouls. I love our October lessons as there is so much scope to jazz up our regular games and activities for Halloween. Fancy dress is a must to get in the creative mood for our students to compose their own spooky tunes, and chase eyeballs with straws to build up little lungs. “The Addams family” theme is also great for fun with rhythm. Happy tunes classes encourage children to express their emotion and creativity through music, while developing the skills to play instrument that will last a lifetime. This month we are also launching our monthly workshops to include children who receive one to one tuition (including our young pianists!) All our young musicians will have the opportunity to make new friends, experience the benefits of group learning, and discover the joy of performing music together. Research in neuroscience increasingly proves that particularly in a group setting the ability to focus attention, to listen, and develop empathy are improved by playing and
making music. Overall It is well documented that participating in music classes and learning to play an instrument is beneficial for individuals of all ages. When children start at a young age music tuition can lead to improvements in cognitive ability, speeding up the development of speech and reading skills. “Our data have confirmed a rapid transfer of cognitive benefits in young children after only 20 days of music training. The strength of this effect in almost all of the children was remarkable.” Dr. Sylvain Moreno, Rotman Research Institute Happy Tunes group music classes are up to 60% cheaper than traditional one to one instrument lessons, starting from as little as £5.95 in school. Instruments are provided also freeing parents from the cost of buying an instrument. An emphasis on fun and enjoyment just in the class, means there is also no need to for parents to worry about practice at home. (Lisa)… gives children such a wonderful opportunity to begin their musical journey. Parent to 7 year old.
Age 3-4: Little Goose Ocarinas. Age 4-6: TooTs and DooDs. These are recorder size starter instruments that lead onto flute, clarinet and saxophone.
Age 6+: NEW jSax. Flute. All are available in participating schools, nurseries, and community venues in Shoreham. They are also available for home educators. All classes involve fun games, activities, and tunes to spark a lifelong love of music making. They are underpinned by the importance of movement to fire up young brains to foster all round learning. Acknowledging how exercise directly influences learning and improves the brains potential to process new information. A wonderful way for your child to start their musical journey – something every child deserves! Autumn’s Taking Over
I
nto October and although the weather in the main has still been dry and warm, there is no doubt that Autumn is slowly taking over, with the nights really drawing in and the mornings are definitely chillier. In fact, in a few weeks the clock will change, and we will really have the feel of summer beginning to be a memory!
As I mentioned before the weather this year has put a strain on most things in the garden. We have had a long wet winter, followed by a long very cold period and then of course the glorious long hot summer. Looking around the garden now, it is easy to see that most plants have suffered in one way or another. I strongly suggest taking a walk around the garden and taking a good look at how things have fared. If anything has gone beyond help, then now would be a good time to get rid of it. Looking on the bright side at least it gives you an opportunity to put something new in its place! At this time of year, the ground is still warm, so it’s a good time to get anything new planted out, as the warmth of the ground will help it establish, and the conditions are not so dry, however be aware that any new plant will still need watering in to help it. But don’t be tempted to kill it with kindness. Any new plant, whether it be a shrub or simply turf, needs to start putting its roots out to find water and nutrients. If you water it too frequently it will simply sit there and this won’t help it. If you are looking to get some more shrubs, the same as those you already have, then a cheap way of doing this is to divide the plants you already have. This means digging the plant out and dividing the rootball into 2 or 3 clumps. Its best done with a couple of sharp spades. The separate plants can then be planted, giving another couple of plants for the garden. Make sure you get some good compost in around them when you plant them, and heel them in well around the roots. The best part of this is you get more plants that you know already thrive in your garden and for the sake of a little effort, you get them for free! It works with most plants, even smaller ones. This really is a very good time of year to do it as well. As usual with autumn, it’s a case of keeping on top of the smaller jobs and getting prepared for the coming winter and making the most of the good days. It’s a lovely time to be out in the garden, as it really feels like you can see the season changing so rapidly, with the crisp days and the wonderful skies. Enjoy! Mark Oakley, Any Garden Limited

Self-Care & Pampering Techniques
W
ith autumn season well underway there is no better time to take really good care of our body and mind. I’d like to suggest some self care and pampering techniques that can see you through autumn feeling healthy and relaxed. 1. Salt body scrub – you can make this scrub at home and bring in all the benefits of a spa style treatment! Great for invigorating the circulation, detoxifying the body and leaving you with silky soft skin. Put 2 tablespoons of fine Sea salt or Himalayan salts into a bowl, add equal parts oil such as olive oil or coconut oil, and a few drops of your favourite essential oil – try Lavender and Lemon, or Geranium and Lemongrass for a refreshing zing! Add 2-3 drops of each oil and then stir it all together. Put a towel down in front of the shower or stand in the bath, and apply the mixture starting from feet and working your way up, gently work into the skin, then rinse under a hot shower and enjoy the resulting glow! 2. Immune boosting respiratory oil – mix 1 tablespoon of plain oil such as Sunflower, Coconut or Almond with 1 drop each of Frankincense, Lemon and Eucalyptus. Massage into the chest, neck and throat to stave off a cold or treat any type of cough, cold, flu or respiratory congestion.
does well. Add a dessertspoon of Epsom salts, some fresh Lavender and/or Rosemary or drops of essential oils such as Peppermint, Lavender, Ginger (if you get cold feet or poor circulation) a dessertspoon of plain oil to soften the skin. Then add warm water, and soak feet for 20 minutes or until the water cools. This can be a great wind down from a stressful day – the relaxing of the feet works through the whole body. With the addition of the herbs you will boost your circulation and immunity too. If you are pregnant, have high blood pressure or epilepsy please consult a qualified Aromatherapist before using Essential oils. Sophie Joseph is a botanical ingredients expert and creator of Essential Blends Natural skincare range, which is handmade in Shoreham-by-Sea from all natural ingredients, free from harmful parabens (chemical preservatives), petrochemicals such as mineral oil and synthetic fragrances. As an experienced Aromatherapist Sophie makes the products using organic essential oils and plant botanicals. How to Tell if You Have a Sports Hernia
A
sports hernia, or “Gilmore’s Groin” named after the physician who discovered it, Mr. Owen Gilmore, can be very tricky to diagnose, as symptoms may vary from person to person. They are not to be confused with a conventional hernia, which usually presents as a tearing in the abdominal wall, with a palpable lump.
Here are 5 Signs that you may have a Sports Hernia: 1. You have pain in your groin region – One sign that you may have a sports hernia, is if you have pain in your inner thigh or groin region. Having said that sportspeople have suffered with unusual areas of pain that are related to a sports hernia, which do not respond well to conventional physiotherapy treatment. 2. You have difficulty getting in and out of a car – If you are experiencing pain whilst getting in or out of a car, this can be a sign of a sports hernia.
Treating issues related to • Back, neck and shoulder pain • Sports injuries • • Pre and post operative rehabilitation • • Muscle retraining and biofeedback • Whiplash • • Ligament sprains and muscle strains • • Postural re-education for poor posture • Treatments • Deep tissue massage • Sports massage therapy • • Joint mobilisation/manipulations • • Active release/cross frictions • • Electrotherapy (i.e. ultrasound, interferential) • • Acupuncture (Trigger Point release, Traditional Chinese) • • Exercise rehabilitation • Posture re-education • • Ergonomic advice and health promotion • Louis Jones Physiotherapy Telephone: 01273 467614 Website: www.sportsphysioshoreham.co.uk Email: louisjones.physio@googlemail.com 2nd Floor, Adur Business Centre, Little High Street, Shoreham-by-Sea, West Sussex, BN43 5EG

3. When playing sport, your pace noticeably slows after around an hour of exercise – Pain would usually come on immediately with exercise, but with a sports hernia, there is usually no pain, but a noticeable reduction in pace, when attempting to sprint, after about an hour. 4. You have a positive cough reflex or flutter – If you were to feel around your pubic region, you would notice a feeling when you cough, similar to the vibration or fuzziness you would feel or hear when you blow a party blower. This is known as a flutter, or a positive cough reflex. 5. You have a positive test on Gilmore’s test – The test for Gilmore’s Groin is to lay on your back, with your legs straight and your feet together. Raise your legs straight approximately 6 inches off the floor, and press firmly into your pubic region. A positive test would bring on a painful response. The treatment for a sports hernia, is usually minor surgery, to repair the damage. The recovery is usually excellent, and with the correct treatment and exercise regime after, you could be back playing sport within 3-4 weeks post surgery. If you are unsure whether you have a sports hernia, it is worth having a physiotherapy assessment to determine a diagnosis and decide on a suitable treatment plan. If think you may be suffering with a sports hernia then call 01273 467614 or email me at louisjones.physio@googlemail.com. To advertise call: 01273 452065 • www.insideshoreham.com
FORWARD PLANNING FOR THE BUDGET With the next Budget approaching – most likely in November - it may be worth reviewing your finances now. More than the usual changes to tax rates are expected this time after various consultations were started in the spring. Draft legislation was published in early July which contained no major surprises, but consultations underway could result in some major announcements. For example, the Office of Tax Simplification has been examining the options for simplifying the administration of inheritance tax (IHT), with its report due in the autumn. IHT produced £5.228 billion for the Exchequer in 2017/18. That’s an increase of two thirds over just five years. There is a case for reviewing your inheritance tax position now and possibly taking some action ahead of the Budget. The advent of the Residence nil rate band - which was introduced in April 2017 and takes full effect in 2020/2021 - may have reduced inheritance tax for many, but the provisions are complex and now would be a good time to review your estate, your Will and your plans for the future. Another possibility is that elements of IHT business relief will be ‘simplified’ by being abolished, which could restrict, or even end, the growing use of IHT-relieved AIM-based share portfolios in estate planning.
Potential tax increases In June, Prime Minister Theresa May announced increased NHS funding of £20.5 billion by 2023, saying this will mean taxpayers will contribute a ‘bit more’ in a ‘fair and balanced’ way. According to the Institute for Fiscal Studies, adding one penny to all the main rates of income tax, or 1% to VAT, raises around £6 billion a year, which could mean that the ’bit more’ could imply noticeable tax rises. We will have to wait until the November Budget to see in detail how the Chancellor expects to raise the necessary revenue but in the meantime, in early July, the Treasury was reportedly investigating a 25% flat rate of relief for pension contributions, which could net an extra £4 billion for the Exchequer. How Many Treatments will I need?
Fiona Murdoch, Acupuncturist at ‘The Acupuncture Clinic’ in Shoreham by Sea, reports that every person is different, & not every person will have total success with Acupuncture, but in her experience, the average person will need 3 - 6 treatments to get their insomnia under control, although the majority of people will notice some degree of improvement after their first session. It is safe to combine Acupuncture with conventional treatment/medication.

Gino Watkins
B
orn in London on the 29th of January 1907, Henry ‘Gino’ Watkins attended Lancing College and Trinity College Cambridge. While at the famous Lancing school, Watkins made a name for himself by climbing around the perilously high outside of the Master’s Tower. Early holidays with his father mountaineering in both the Lake District and the Alps gave Gino Watkins a zest for adventure. At Cambridge he became interested in polar exploration and by the age of twenty-five he had led four expeditions to the frozen northern reaches of the globe. His first expedition, which he organized himself and led at the age of only nineteen, was to Edge Island. His team included a doctor, a physicist, a botanist and an ornithologist. The weather was atrocious for most of the trip, but valuable scientific data was brought back and published by the team members. On returning to his studies at Cambridge, Watkins now learnt to fly, becoming one of the first members of the Cambridge University Air Squadron. Gino Watkins had not been back in England for long before he started planning his next voyage of exploration. This time Labrador was his destination. On June the 26th, 1928, he and his team sailed from Liverpool. After some initial setbacks, despite the terrible weather conditions and often facing starvation, his team managed explore and map many previously uncharted areas. Watkins’ most important voyage of discovery was however the British Arctic Air Route Expedition of 1930–31. Here he led a team of fourteen men to survey the east coast of Greenland and monitor the weather conditions there. This information was urgently needed to allow for a planned air route from England to Winnipeg in Canada. The trip needed £12,000 in funding, as Watkins required two aeroplanes to survey the terrain below from. Fortunately, despite still being aged only twenty-one, he was able to convince a number of financiers to back his scheme. Watkins chose younger scientists, mostly under twenty-five years of age to accompany him on this expedition. Provisions included sledges, tents, Bovril, margarine, wholemeal biscuits and cocoa. Margarine was the most important foodstuff, as its fat content kept the explorers warm in the arctic conditions. Initially the weather was good, but the dog teams inexplicably refused to pull the sleds. The reason why became apparent when hours later a mighty storm hit with hundredmile-an-hour gusts. While on this expedition, Watkins and
two companions also made a gruelling trip by boat of 600 nautical miles around the King Frederick VI Coast in the south of Greenland. Watkins was known informally as ‘Gino’ to everyone and led by example rather than forcing his authority on members of his teams. In December the explorers left Augustine Courtald volunteering to man Captain Scott’s Ice Cap Station observation post alone. This generated the first scientific data set from this previously inaccessible location The extremes of the climate at this bleak spot meant the rest of the team were not to reach him again to relieve him until the following May. On returning to England, Gino Watkins gave a lecture on his trip to the Royal Geographical Society and planned a new, highly ambitious excursion across the Antarctic Continent from the Weddell Sea to the Ross Sea. He was now a highly respected explorer for his qualities of leadership, endurance and tenacity. However despite receiving prestigious awards both in England and Denmark for his previous voyage of exploration, Watkins had trouble securing finance for his Antarctic quest. It was now the time of the Great Depression, and financiers no longer had large amounts of money to invest in overseas exploration. Gino Watkins became engaged to Margaret Graham while he waited. He also gave lectures around the country and flew for the RAF reserve whilst he tried to raise the necessary finance to go to Antarctica. Eventually, Watkins decided instead to return with a small team to Greenland in 1932 to continue the work of his air route expedition. This cost substantially less and a publishing house, the Royal Geographical Society and Pan American Airways Company clubbed together to fund him. On the 20th of August, Watkins went seal hunting alone in his kayak and did not return. Later that day, his empty kayak was found floating upside down by members of his team. It is presumed he drowned while trying to swim to safety through the icy waters. His body was never found. The fiftieth anniversary of Gino Watkins’ death was marked by Lancing College sending an exploration party to Malawi in his honour. Judy Upton Refs: Wikipedia Encyclopaedia Arctica 15: Biographies

T
Footwear
his month Karen the podiatrist at First Foot Clinic, Shoreham-by-Sea, talks about the importance of Footwear: Footwear is a common contributing factor in many foot complaints. An American study called “If the shoe fits, wear it” found that nine out of ten women are wearing shoes that are too small and, after the age of 60, some 70% of women will have osteoarthritis problems in their feet. Whilst women do appear to have more footwear related problems, men also have footwear related problems too. As you get older, your feet tend to spread, but few people get them measured after the age of 20. Foot problems most commonly appear in the 40s, 50s, and 60s following decades of persevering with poorly fitting footwear. If social expectations of both men’s and women’s appearance and the sort of shoes that are “acceptable” changed, then there would be far fewer foot problems. Quick tips to remember when shoe shopping • M ake sure you can wiggle your toes inside your shoes • F eet tend to swell a little during the day, so buy shoes in the afternoon when your feet are at their largest • B uy the right shoe for the purpose • I f you wear insoles (orthotics) or feel you may need insoles, buy shoes with removable footbeds to ensure room for your foot as well as the insole (your podiatrist can assess you for insoles/orthotics) • B uying shoes in a “Sale” may save money, but could cost your feet dearly. Ensure they fit correctly Contact us for an appointment on 01273 455080 email@ firstfootclinic.co.uk or www.firstfootclinic.co.uk
Back for his second fundraising event for Cystic Fibrosis, Jim Prior and The JP Big Band are back in Steyning for a night of music making on Saturday the 27th of October. Following the success of their last fundraising night The JP Big Band plus special guests are putting on a evening of music from Gloria Estefan, Tori Kelly, Sammy Nestico and Bobby Darin to name but a few. Joining the band on stage this year are special guests Bryony Prior on vocals, Paul Newton on trumpet, Mark Bassey on trombone, Vocal fusion Acapella and Saffron on vocals. Along with a full 25 piece big band including percussion and french horns and the legendary Steyning Steinway Grand Piano so it’ll certainly make for a big noise! Jim is joined again with members of the Rotary Club of Steyning and Henfield, Steyning Music Society and the Steyning Jazz Club to help organise and promote the event as well as helping out on the night itself. 20
There will be a bar sponsored by the Dark Star Brewery and a raffle sponsored by local residents and business. Most importantly though is that all the profits from the night are going to the Cystic Fibrosis Trust. Jim’s sister Bryony was diagnosed with Cystic Fibrosis when she was younger so there is a very personal connection there, and what better way to combine their passion for music and raise some money for Cystic Fibrosis. The concert will be held at the Steyning Centre, BN44 3XZ on Saturday the 27th of October at 7:30pm (doors open at 7pm). Tickets are £15 and are available from the Steyning Bookshop on 01903 812062 or at www.justgiving.com/fundraising/thejpbigband To advertise call: 01273 452065 • www.insideshoreham.com

utumn is one of the busiest times of the year for gardeners. Gardening can be a wonderful form of exercise and there are in fact now “Green Gyms” (see www.tcv.org.uk). Its benefits for mental health are also becoming widely acknowledged, so in the winter, it’s a great antidote to S.A.D. However, there is also risk of injury or pain if you’re not using your body correctly. So here are some tips from the SOC team. 1. Warm up – gardeners are not unlike athletes – they should always warm up before they start (especially in cold weather)! For example: a) Stand with knees and feet hip-width apart, knees soft. Take a few deep breaths, feeling your ribs expand, filling your lungs with oxygen b) Do some small knee bends (no more than 45 degrees) c) Roll shoulders up to your ears and back into a relaxed position a few times d) “Windmill” your arms backwards a few times e) Gently rotate your body to the right and left to loosen up your spine, swinging your arms, knees bent 2. Avoid long periods in static positions or on repetitive movements. The body loves movement. Problems often stem from being “stuck” in one position. This leads to reduced circulation so muscles and joints work less efficiently. But, too much of the same movement may put strain on certain muscles/joints. Weeding is a good example. Change your kneeling position every five or ten minutes. As well as kneeling on both knees, try squatting

with knees slightly apart; or having one knee on the ground and the other at 90 degrees with the foot on the ground in front, to give you a “spring” to be able to get up more easily and keep your back in a more neutral position as you weed. 3. Lifting and shifting bags of leaves, compost, pots, logs, etc. – Stand facing the load and prepare by bending your knees, if possible using both arms/hands to hold it securely. Keep it as close to you as possible, elbows/wrists slightly bent, not locked straight, to avoid strain. Then engage your deep core (abdominal) muscles to support your back and breathe out as you use your knees to help you lift. Avoid locking your knees on straightening up. And it’s worth taking extra time for two small loads rather than one big one, to avoid injury! 4. Raking – Keep hands several inches apart on the rake. Have legs hip-width apart and one foot in front of the other. Use your whole bodyweight, not just your arms – rock forward onto your front foot as you reach forward, and rock back onto your back foot as you pull the leaves in. Rake leaves to the side of you, alternating legs/arms every few minutes. Think of it as a sort of dance! (This works for hoovering too, by the way!) 5. Digging – keep body, feet and arms/elbows close to you so as much of your weight is directly over the spade as possible, keep knees bent and use your core to add power as you push down into the ground and support your back as you lift the spade out. Alternate legs if you can. 6. Hedge-cutting – As arms are often held above shoulderheight, take breaks every 5-10 minutes and give your neck and shoulders a good stretch to relieve tension. 7. Pruning/cutting back – avoid over-stretching to reach branches or getting into awkward positions which can strain ligaments and muscles. 8. Ladders! Place both feet squarely on the steps and don’t go on tiptoe to give yourself more height or reach: you are more likely to strain your back and you could risk falling… 9. In general, remember to change sides, position and tasks regularly, and between tasks, have a stretch or just sit down, breathe in the fresh air and admire your work 10. Obviously health and safety tips apply – keep hydrated, wear gloves and thick clothing to protect skin, and goggles if splinters might be flying. And take your time – rushing can lead to accidents. 11. Finally, “warm down” with a little stretching as in tip 1, before sitting down to that well-deserved tea and cake!
