PAPER CHASE

NATIONAL LITERACY TRUST BRIDGE WRITING GAP WITH COMIC BOOKS

The National Literacy Trust, Beano Studios and sustainable paper brand REY® areworking to reach thousands of Year 6 pupils across the United Kingdom through the Comics Rule! Summer Writing Challenge to tackle falling levels of writing competency.Pupils leaving primary school achieving expected writing levels on their SATs dropped from 78% in 2019 to 69% in 2022.

Lacking vital literacy skills, like writing, doesn’t just affect success at school but can hold a person back at every stage in life, locking them out of job opportunities, affecting their physical and mental health and life expectancy. With a third of 11 year olds in England leaving primary school without the writing skills they need, the National Literacy Trust and REY are determined to reach pupils at this critical juncture in their education journey as they transition from primary to secondary school.

“Summertime literacy initiatives can help vulnerable children, improve engagement with education and ease the transition from primary to secondary education. Our recent writing research revealed that one in two children and young people say that they write to be creative. Linking to this, it found that opportunities for writing for creativity, mindfulness and social connection are enablers for children and young people’s writing. This is why creative, immersive writing projects like the Comics Rule! Summer Writing Challenge are so important, and I thank REY paper and Beano for their generous support,” said Tim Judge, Head of School Programmes at the National Literacy Trust.

The Comics Rule! Summer Writing Challenge seeks to enable pupils to explore their creativity through fun writing activities that take the emphasis away from spelling, grammar and punctuation and let their imaginations run wild. More than12,000 free resource packs, including activities, paper, pens and Beano magazines, went to200 primary schools for use over the summer. These brilliant activity packs and teaching materials are still available to teachers and children

The Frankfurt book fair saw book lovers from all over the world come together. What a great opportunity to take a look at two very special publications, reflecting two culinary philosophies that are fundamentally different, yet similar in principle: The Asado grill cookbook ‘Asado – Ursprünglich Grillen über offenem Feuer’ and the Ayurveda book ‘Karma Food’. With one a celebration of meat and the other promoting the colourful world of veganism, the two books could not be more different at first glance. However, PERGRAPHICA has helped create books that have one thing in common: the impressive synergy between optics and haptics with a mouthwatering effect. PERGRAPHICA, the premium design paper from Mondi, a global paper and packaging manufacturer, convincingly supports a multi-sensory reading experience. to download for free from the National Literacy Trust website.

Since 2021, more than 22,000 Comics Rule! Summer Writing Challenge packs have been distributed to schools running summer catch-up sessions to improve writing attitudes and boost literacy skills, including the contribution of 195,000 sheets of REY paper.

“We were delighted to partner with the National Literacy Trust again on this important initiative. Our goal is to encourage children to have fun with the writing and design of comics and allow their imaginations to run wild. The impact of the pandemic is still being felt in the classroom, and we are glad to help children improve their literacy skills in the transitional period between primary and secondary school,” said Antony Mackie, country sales manager, United Kingdom and Ireland for Sylvamo, produces which REY. www.rey-paper.com • www.literarytust.org.uk
