Selwyn businesses increasingly confident about the future

The recent Selwyn Business Survey, a quarterly survey organised by the Council, shows local businesses are more positive about the outlook over the next six months.

The February survey of 120 businesses from over 17 different industries shows confidence growing after being affected by the COVID-19 global pandemic. The results showed 28 percent of businesses were expecting their profits to increase over the next six months and nine percent are expecting to hire new staff. This is compared to 10 percent of businesses which reported reduced profits over the previous six months, while six percent of businesses reduced staff in that time. Council Group manager of Community Services and Facilities, Denise Kidd, says it was good to see the positive outlook despite the challenges of the pandemic. “It’s particularly pleasing to see businesses reporting that they’re planning to hire over the next six months. Especially as autumn and winter are typically quieter periods for hiring.” The pandemic led to challenges accessing supplies and finding skilled and semi-skilled staff. Businesses are also expecting costs to rise in the next six months. However, there were also positives for business, with 35 percent reporting a closer relationship with customers, while businesses also reported an increase in use of online services, more flexible work arrangements, increased use of local suppliers and more efficient use of staff and resources. “We know there are still challenges to come, but it’s good to see businesses and our community working together and adapting well and that we’re well placed for the long-term,” Denise says. Lincoln University’s journey to carbon zero

Lincoln University has gained Toitu Envirocare carbonreduce certification to help it track its progress towards becoming carbon neutral by 2030 and achieving carbon zero by 2050.

The certification involves an audit to certify the measurement of the university’s greenhouse gas emissions on campus and a commitment to reducing emissions from a 2019 baseline. Lincoln University vice-chancellor professor Grant Edwards said the certification gave assurance to the staff, students, public, and other stakeholders that Lincoln was taking action on climate change, as detailed in the university’s Sustainability Plan. It will also provide ongoing progress reporting against the baseline. He said Lincoln University was committed to being an exemplar of sustainable practices for the land-based sector. “As a specialist land-based university, Lincoln University is uniquely placed to take a leadership role in advancing sustainable practices in the sector, including across our campus and throughout our learning, teaching, and research activities. Our Sustainability Plan highlights our commitment and the actions we are taking to achieve this role”. Lincoln’s measures to reduce carbon emissions are already underway. New solar installations on-campus are now delivering a total of 250,000 kWh direct to the university’s network - enough to power 35 average-sized houses for a year or charge 12,500 electric cars. Coal-powered heat generation will be phased out by 2024, diesel generators by 2030, new buildings have to adhere to Green Star building standards, air travel emissions are to be offset, and the vehicle fleet is being converted to carbon zero. The university is seeking to reduce carbon emissions for field trips, already encourages cycling and carpooling, and is working to reduce waste, including composting food waste from the food halls. All operational greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions required under the international standard for carbon footprints, ISO 14064-1, including vehicles, business travel, staff and student daily commute, fuel, electricity, paper, and waste were evaluated to gain the certification. The emissions are measured annually. The inventory is independently verified to ensure it is accurate and complete and to be certified you must continually manage and reduce emissions. CT

Ryman Healthcare is planning to build a new $205 million retirement village in the fast-growing town of Rolleston on the outskirts of Christchurch.

The new village in Rolleston’s Faringdon development would be home to more than 280 residents. Ryman plans to build townhouses and serviced apartments along with a care centre offering rest home, hospital, and dementia care. The land is on a 9.5-hectare site on Goulds Road and would service the growing retirement population in South Christchurch and mid-Canterbury. Ryman chief construction officer Chris Evans said Rolleston doubled in size since the Christchurch earthquakes and had a growing number of retirees. Faringdon is a new master-planned community with brand new infrastructure and is already home to 6,000 residents. “Our analysis shows there is a shortage of retirement living and care options in the area and this will only grow in the years ahead as the population ages. “The site is close to everything Rolleston has to offer and makes it a compelling buy for us. It has all the makings of a fantastic spot for a Ryman community, and we can’t wait to start building.’’ The new village will employ more than 200 construction workers during its peak and it will create about 120 full-and part-time time jobs once the village opens. Ryman already has eight villages in Canterbury, which are home to 2,080 residents. Ryman is building new villages at Riccarton Park, Northwood, and has permission to build another new village on Park Terrace, overlooking Hagley Park in Christchurch. The company was founded in Christchurch in 1984 and has grown to become New Zealand’s largest retirement village operator. CT
