CONTENTS A stack of selected professional works during my employment as an architect for PT. Alam Sutera Realty Indonesia and Gary Fell Architect Bureau (GFAB) from 2013 to 2017. Blurring the lines between the buildings and the landscapes Located in the magnificent Cape Mayavee, the aim of this design is to create buildings that are tailored beautifully to the landscapes The main design strategy is to mimic the languages of the nature, which represent the characteristics of the cape itself Building emerged from the ground as if it is a part of the landscape, greeneries covered the roofs as the vegetations covered the top ground, buildings sit on the top of stone pedestals as the rocks covered the bottom of the island

The sightline To ensure the privacy of the guests, the levels and building arrangement between villa 1 and villa 2 are adjusted according to the sightline of human eyes. Therefore, the sense of privacy could be maintained while the use of effective space could be optimized at the same time. The use of natural elements like tree and stones also helped to create natural borders which blend perfectly with the architecture.

TSHM VILLA “experiencing the sequence of spaces� Private Villa Uluwatu, Pecatu, Bali

The design strategy of this project is leading people to experience the sequence of space through a series of changing perspective views as he / she moves from one point to another. Begins from the entry through the main gate, people will be allowed to explore a series of vista formed by the exterior elements. An impression of enclosure constructed by the natural and built boundaries will draw people curiosity to reach the disclosure. At the very end, the entire experience will reveal the main focal point of the building which is the breathtaking view of the indian ocean, framed by the architecture itself. This rewarding spatial experience will add meaning into the overall architectural experience and make it unforgetable.

THE LOCAL PATTERN An asymmetrical roof covered with balinese pattern carved terracotta roof is the prominent design element in this project. A fusion between modern and vernacular style is presented through the use of local materials and the basic form of the building.

03 THE RESORT AT LABUAN BAJO “a place of solitude� Villa and Resort Labuan Bajo, Flores, Indonesia

Set on two land plots of 7.6 Hectares and 2.8 Hectares, this resort and villas project situated in the beautiful mountaneous scenery of the renowned Labuan Bajo. This project consisting of an apartment complex, hotel, villas and a stylish ocean club. Nestled into the hill with steep sides dropping into the ocean below, the natural feature allows all the buildings to benefit from superb view. The aim of this design is to maximize the potential views of the Labuan Bajo ocean while promoting the characteristic of local Flores architecture through the selection of local materials. Each block of the buildings are linked by a system of buggy track which wrap around the hillside and allow entry from the top of each building and for the guests to see clean over the garden roof of the buildings. The planters and natural borders are arranged to assist with privacy between the buildings. This creates a sense of solitude while enjoying the natural wonder of Labuan Bajo.

APARTMENT The apartments come in two types , single level /single bedroom lofts and 2 level/ 2 bedrooms duplex apartments. The apartments benefit from large terraces on each floor and extensive glazing (adequately shaded against the sun) provides a seamless connection between inside and outside. Living areas are kept open plan and the material palette is kept simple for easy maintenance, employing a mixture of local rubble stone, “off form� concrete and timber.

At the summit of the hill a small restaurant and pool with panoramic views is provided for the owners/users and housekeeping and storage facilities are contained within the ramp structure linking the various levels at the eastern end of the plot.

THE VILLAS Each villa offers large expansive living areas which are open to decks and pools of 15m length and can be closed off with storm blinds which retract into slots in the ceilings. The main kitchens for each villa is set directly behind this living area and an island “bar” like kitchen/serving station is provided within the living area itself. Part of the living area can be closed off with glazing, AC and function as an TV or separate sitting room. Bedrooms are housed in either blocks/”components” of 2 with their own en suite bathrooms.

THE HOTEL The hotel building might be seen as a “table” or “plateau” like design, where the main public spaces project from the slope and are supported (essentially) on blocks of standard and rooms below.

Down below the “table top” circulation to the rooms extends as a series of dramatic “flying” walkways over what is essentially a (partially) shaded garden on the hillside and terraces created to support the room blocks themselves. Above the table top and its green roof canopy, and set into what remains of the hillside heading toward the summit, are located the villas with pools, connected to the principal public areas/levels by means of a buggy track.

THE OCEAN CLUB Far down the hillside almost at sea level and cut into the face of the hill we find the “ocean club”. This element in many ways is the “front door” of the whole development. A vast pier structure projects out from the lowest levels reaching beyond (and protecting) the wonderful coral reef below to the deep waters beyond. It is envisaged that any drop off of guests and parking of visiting boats will happen on the far side of this pier in order to keep the reef pristine for diving and snorkeling.

The club essentially straddles the base of the southern hill/promontory and connects both beaches via a series of decks and pools set at varying levels. One enters from the sea side via the pier at the centre of the club. The slim areas of site available to be developed (reasonably), have lead to us structuring the composition as a pair of “wings” emanating from this main canopy/ hub area that houses the first of 3 bars which are spread across the development.

04 UBUD STREET SHOPPING AVENUE “a sense of local culture� Retail Complex Ungasan, Bali, Indonesia

One of the most distinctive urban elements in Bali is the rows of shops that grow organically from time to time , shaping the culture-influenced trading spaces, that we can find almost everywhere around the street of Kuta or Ubud. This kind of unique atmosphere cannot be find on any well-planned retail facilities. The shops just develop themselves following human activity pattern. Inspired by the unplanned growth of the shops in Ubud street, this project aims to bring the sense of local trading activities into the biggest retail complex in Garuda Wisnu Kencana Cultural Park. By creating non-typical building forms and facades, the sole aim of this design can be achieved. The use of local material and specific colour pallette also play major role in creating the atmosphere of traditional Ubud shopping street.

05 COMMERCIAL STRIP “the activity generator� Retail and Dining Ungasan, Bali, Indonesia

Located at the front area of the Garuda Wisnu Kencana Cultural Park, this retail facility plays important role to create the first impression of the whole venue. Subsequently, this project is set to be the activity generator of the cultural park, as the activities will be started here right after the guests coming out from the parking area. Amazing view of the mighty Garuda Wisnu Kencana Statue and the giant limestone pillars that can be seen from the outdoor dining area are the main strength of the design. Therefore, the layout of the retail units and the outdoor spaces are adjusted to optimize the view of the statue and the cliffs, while minimizing the view to the parking lot area. The design strategy also emphasizes on creating non-typical balinese style facades to represent the characteristics of local shopping street design.

06 THE SUNSET BAR “capturing the twilight� F&B Facility Ungasan, Bali, Indonesia

The region of Ungasan is very famous for its mesmerizing sunset. For this reason, a sunset bar was planned to be built on the top of a cliff in GWK Cultural Park, which is one of the best spot to catch the sunset inside the park with a panoramic view or Denpasar city. Local merbau and coconut timber is the dominant material used in this project, while thatched roof is installed to implement the characteristic of local architecture.

SITE PLAN An open-air bar concept is implemented to this project to maximize the experience of lounging under the sunset. Seven cabanas and four-seating table areas designed to be laid on two different levels. Each level is determined according to human’s field of vision. On the right side, there laid a bar station and three sets of outdoor lounge overlooking the dramatic cliffs of GWK. The floor layout is adjusted to the shape of the cliff and also the contour to minimize excavation works. The intention is to retain the natural shape of the ground which characterized by the combination of low vegetation and limestone.

07 THE SKYWALK BRIDGE AND GALLERY “between the earth and sky” Cultural Facility Ungasan, Bali, Indonesia

Going up the panoramic elevator, the Skywalk Gallery begins at the entrance of the bridge, consists of exhibition space, interactive gallery, outdoor gallery space and a sky cafe overlooking the GWK statue. At the end of the gallery , there is the Skywalk Bridge which intended to carry people to the sky level, as Garuda carry the God Vishnu to the sky. People will be brought to feel as if they are inside the story. Extending above the gigantic limestone pillars, this project is one of the ultimate attraction where visitor can see the entire park from a bird’s point of view. The concept of this Skywalk Bridge project derived from the master concept of Garuda Wisnu Kencana Cultural Park that aims to bring people into the story of the God Vishnu and his vahana Garuda, and to experience every stage of his life.
