guru At Maggie & Rose, we’re absolutely obsessed with awesome design, which is why looking around our newest home away from home in Dempsey, Singapore is always so exciting. For this edition of Guru, we have a chat with our amazing Singapore team to explore the oh-so nostalgic designs, the club spaces and their eco-friendly elements.
Tell us a bit about the club in Dempsey.
We opened our antique yellow doors to the families of Dempsey on April 16th 2019. The team were super excited to show off the beautiful 6,700 sq ft space, and even more excited to try out all the new play spaces! Maggie & Rose Dempsey is an inspiring and relaxed hangout spot for the whole family to make memories together, whether that be eating together in the brasserie, losing yourself in the magical world of books in the library nook, or exploring the soft play or incredible outdoor tree house, a feat of engineering and design, standing amidst the jackfruit trees.
Why is the club so special?
We’re so lucky to be in the leafy area of Dempsey in Singapore, (there’s greenery everywhere) where mini-members can learn surrounded by nature. The veritable jungle on our doorstep is so inspiring and helps our little ones appreciate
8
the environment all around them. It’s such a privilege for our mini members and we love how the club feels like such an escape from the hustle and bustle of the city, offering up plenty of space for the whole family to enjoy without constraints. With our awesome outdoor play areas, we are unique in having oodles of room for little ones to adventure in and blow off steam!
Tell us a secret about the interior design.
Our emphasis on super-cool design is important to us, it’s part of our brand DNA, but it’s also important
that it’s family friendly. We have created our spaces to suit both that is both grown-ups and kids alike so neither have to compromise, and we, of course, place importance on being as sustainable as possible. You will only find natural materials, muted colours, limited technology and most importantly, no plastic in sight. One of our favourite things is the fact that our club is filled to the brim with nostalgic touches, many of which are locally sourced from right here in Singapore! Highlights include beautiful doors and tiles, painstakingly restored from an old house here on the island. You’ll find so many design elements which have been up-cycled, given a little TLC and a new lease of life! We are all about preserving little pieces of history and showcasing them in a new way, which we find so many of our members love and really appreciate, they become talking points of the club!
What makes the club so unique to Singapore from a design perspective, and otherwise?
Every corner of the club was designed by our epic in-house design team. We really focused on implementing Singaporean elements into the design, giving it a bespoke feel and a sense that the club has always been there in Dempsey, it naturally fits into the landscape and surroundings. Our team will spend months prior to a club launch sourcing incredible antiques, materials and finishing touches to make each club special and unique to the country; it’s also about making the clubs feel like they have a warm and inviting atmosphere and are not just another
new build development which can feel soulless. It’s amazing to see how all of these British and Singaporean elements and influences have come together to create a beautiful club for our families. And we think that’s what also makes it unique here in Singapore; the design of the club and build has been brought about by teams of passionate people who have put their heart into the project, there’s been a real desire to make this an awesome place to come for young families. It’s now being run by a dedicated and passionate team, who are determined to make it the best it can be, that’s quite special!
What are the most loved design features of the club?
Everyone has their favourites! However, we’re all totally obsessed with the bespoke tin door which acts as a secret door opening out into the club. We won’t ruin the element surprise but come down one day to check it out! maggieandrose.com/singapore Maggie & Rose Singapore maggieandrosesg

THE INTERVIEW FINLAY COWAN
We chat to our Creative Director, Finlay, to learn a little more about him and his awesome involvement in all things design at Maggie & Rose.
Tell us a bit about yourself.
I started as a designer in the music industry and I’m best known for my work with the legendary album sleeve designer Storm Thorgerson working for Pink Floyd, Muse and many other bands. After that I worked as a designer in the film industry on costumes for Angelina Jolie, Jeremy Renner, Famke Janssen, and for directors including Oliver Stone. I later wrote and illustrated five fantasy art books which were published in over 20 countries, then I went on to work as a design consultant on assignments for the European Luxury Marketing Council, Vertu, Dunhill and others.
What got you into design and drawing?
I started drawing as soon as I could first pick up a pencil. My earliest influences were Herge’s Tintin books and the work of M.C Escher. I also loved the Moomin books by Tove Jansson, there is a beautiful dark mystery to her work that still captivates me today.
10
When did you start working at Maggie & Rose?
I met Maggie in around 2008 and did some workshops at the club. There were only 12 employees at Maggie & Rose then. I began helping them with their design team and I’ve been here ever since.
What has been the most exciting work you’ve done here?
Every project is different and every project is exciting in its own way.
The Hangzhou club was amazing because it was such a challenge… a huge project (6000 square metres) with a completely new partner on the other side of the world.
How do you usually start working on huge design projects like this?
We invent it as we go along! The wonderful thing about Maggie & Rose is that we are no ordinary company - we are not just a members club, an interior design company or a nursery, we are all these things and more. Because of the unique nature of what we are there are no predesigned systems so we have to create new processes and there’s a high level of innovation and creativity in that.
How long does the design process take?
About 40 years in my case. It’s rather like working on an oil painting where you start with broad strokes and outlines then add layers of detail in sweeps… except of course it’s like an oil painting with about 30 people working on it. When it comes to the drawings it’s a different matter - its very solitary and intensely focused work and although I’m very fast at it now, it is still emotionally draining. The Hangzhou drawing I did 3 times and each time it took a couple of fairly long days.
Where do you get your inspiration?
When you are working with a team, the inspiration should come from everywhere - it’s 360 degrees with everyone getting involved. But for me personally - its meditation. I clear my mind and eventually the ideas flow through. I’ve been fascinated by various traditions of wisdom and philosophy all my life. I’m a great
admirer of the Swiss psychoanalyst Carl Jung and I’m currently reading a brilliant book called ‘Hamlets Mill - An Essay Investigating the Origins of Human Knowledge and Its Transmission Through Myth’ by Santillana and Dechend.
How do you unwind?
Yoga is key… it’s not a luxury, it’s essential.
What projects are you looking forward to working on in the future?
If you could do a dream project for us what would it be and where?
Every project has it’s own unique charm so it doesn’t really matter what or where it is but my personal ambition is to do a country house hotel and I would also love to design an airport lounge as they are such sterile environments and, like many people, I find them stressful - it would be great to create a really special experience for family travellers.
The possibilities with Maggie & Rose are endless. In the future we will be doing more with traditional storytelling in the form of children’s books and on the club side, we could even be looking to do some family hotels and spas.

NURSERY KNOW-HOW
In this edition of our Nursery Know-How, we interview our Head of Nurseries, Lisa, as she talks about settling into nursery, just in time for the new term and opening of our Islington outpost!
Hi Lisa, so tell us what is settling?
Settling is all about making a child at nursery feel just that, settled! At a Maggie & Rose Nursery, it’s important that each child feels at home with us as quickly as possible so they can get comfortable in the environment, make relationships with the other children and start to reap the benefits of our learning methods.
What makes a Maggie & Rose settle different from somewhere else?
We don’t just offer up a blanket way of settling each child. Our team really want to personalise and pay attention to the fact that each child and family are so different and will naturally have different needs, which is why each settling in session is so unique and tailored. We believe these individual needs are what makes us all extraordinary and so we have to encourage little ones to feel comfortable with that.
12
To get our mini Maggie & Rosers as comfortable as possible we learn from the pro’s! We ask mum or dad to stay for the first settle and during this session we learn all your tricks to get to know what makes your little one happy. Getting to know you and your child helps us settle them into nursery life at Maggie & Rose.
momentum. Following on from the settling in sessions, it usually takes a few more weeks for little ones to really feel at home; the exact time differs for each child and can be anything from 2 weeks - 2 months. Don’t worry, this can sometimes .just be a few tears at drop off, but we are on hand to help!
How many sessions of settling do you offer?
What do parents need to know when they come to do settling? .
We offer 3- 4 settling in sessions, the duration is dependent on the nursery pattern you have booked for your little one. Each session is booked and arranged in advance and will usually happen the week before your little ones are due to start. This will help to build and keep the
What looks the same for every settle are the nitty-gritty details a.k.a. the important bits. We will ask a set of questions required to settle you into nursery and help us to get to know you and your little one. We will require some documents from you too, including medical records (copies of your little red book), birth certificate or passport, and a completed registration form with emergency consent signatures. We will also support you to download the apps we use and complete details to make your nursery payments super simple.
Can you tell us more about your Buddy system?
Settling in for each little one is slightly different as we follow the lead of each child; we let them be independent from the outset and allow them to make the important decisions. For example, our little ones choose their own buddy (key person). At Maggie & Rose the room leader is responsible for settling all families into nursery life, we make sure mum and dad know what to expect and spend time settling children into their new play space. In the first few weeks when your little one is settling, they will very likely naturally be drawn to a team member for comfort. The room leader will update the parents and the person they bond with will become their buddy. The buddy will be responsible for tracking your child’s milestones as they play, learn and grow. All team members in the nursery support and care for all children but it’s lovely to have the little ones’ teamed up with a buddy to support them in their first few months at our nursery.
Any tips for Mums and Dads?
If we were to give you our top tip for settling your little ones into nursery, it would be to be prepared for tears! Remember when you are not there your little ones will begin to bond with their carers and often children are easy distracted which can be hard for mums and dads. Read our Grown-up Guide to be well informed on all thing’s nursery, this will help you feel more familiar with our nursery and what we do. Do send us some pictures/videos on your learning journal app so we can see what your little ones get up to at home. And of course, please do ask any questions, we are super happy to share our experience and knowledge of settling in with you.
Once kids are underway at nursery, what can they expect?
Once your little ones are settled into nursery, they will love our super-cool timetable of inspiring Maggie & Rose classes. We offer our very own curriculum of cooking, music and art classes; little ones will have the opportunity to splat paint (Jackson
Pollock inspired) listening to jazz, and count and create patterns with real vegetables in cooking class! We have a passionate creative team behind everything we do at Maggie & Rose, so expect bespoke, visually inspiring spaces, which are perfect curious minds. One of our favourite resources are our wooden tables which are bespoke in design and double up as fun sensory play stations when you take off the table tops.
What are you excited about for our upcoming nursery opening in Islington?
So many things! One of the main ones is having the opportunity to meet and get to know families in advance. We’ve been meeting so many families at our pop-up (running until the end of August around the corner from Islington Square) which helps with settling and the bonding experience before the new term starts in September!
13
MEMBER MOMENT Introducing our awesome member, Rocio Lereah, and her business ‘Design Matters’! and even the scent of a room are all important. Design is all about how that space makes you feel, the kind of reactions you can provoke or evoke when you play with these elements.
I
grew up and trained as an architect in Argentina and ten years ago, my husband and I moved to London. It was supposed to be a two year adventure, but we loved London (and Chiswick especially!) so much so, that after many years and two daughters, we’re still here! Before coming to London, I worked for an interior design practice specialising in residential and commercial projects developing brand identity. It was amazing to blend my architectural experience with interior design. I learnt that lighting, furniture, texture, fabrics,
14
After several years of working on residential projects around London, I realised that there was still a noticeable gap between interior designers and consumers. There was, and still continues to be, a misconception that working with an interior designer is not for everyone, or that it would only make sense to employ one for big renovation projects; this left me frustrated! After talking with two colleagues, Design Matters was born. The idea? To make things easier and more affordable for people wanting to improve their homes! For us, good design is honest and simple, it really shouldn’t be a complicated affair, but an integral part of everybody’s life. We aim to improve and discover the full potential
of every space by taking the time to understand our clients’ needs and lifestyle. We start from scratch with every project, never wanting to impose our personal style on our clients. With our advice and knowledge, we aim to help people bring their ideas to life, on time and in budget. Not only do we offer the more traditional, bespoke service, but also have a supercool service called Room-in-a-Click, these are interior design packages to buy online, making interior design affordable and accessible! What we love about doing what we do is that it’s so exciting to go through the creative process and see things materialise at the end of each project! A project that holds a special place in my heart is an A Listed Grade I Tudor house, in a town close to Cambridge. It was a huge renovation project that lasted more
than 2 years and included not only the refurbishment of kitchen, bathrooms and bedrooms, but also restoration work on the historic features of the main house and surrounding buildings. And when asked where I get my inspiration from, the answer is always from…everywhere! Inspiration is really all around. I’m a very visual person, so I’m always reading magazines and design books, as well as following other designers and suppliers online to be up to date with new products and trends. I also visit craft fairs and exhibitions and I love to go to the V&A. Running your own business is great, but one of the biggest challenges is still trying to spread the message that a well-designed space can improve everyday life in so many ways, and that you don’t need to spend a fortune to get the right
advice and help to achieve it! We try to overcome this by staying true to our ethos and developing our own identity without following trends too much. We also challenge ourselves every day to design with a more sustainable approach as we believe we should all do our best to look after our environment! What’s next for us? There’s lots, but building and developing our website and Instagram account too will be key! In my spare time, I love cooking, baking and watching period dramas on TV, the costumes and sets are always amazing… Well, once a designer, always a designer!

the feature
A mega-city like Shanghai needs little introduction...
W
ith design a constant and much-loved feature of our clubs in London and around the world, our teams are always on the hunt for inspiration both at home and further afield. Cities, people, history, art and music all play a pivotal part in influencing the design of each of our clubs, with attention to supercool detail and an eye for design our modus operandi. In this edit, we are showcasing Shanghai, a city of epic contrasts and an unstoppable mix of art, culture, architecture and design. Anyone who stands on the Bund and witnesses the dramatic skyline with its architecture styles ranging from art-deco
16
to neo-classic to super modern, knows they’re at the heart of a city with its finger firmly on the pulse of design! So, join us on this whistle-stop tour of our favourite hangouts in one of the most awesome cities on the planet! First stop, we love the People’s Square Gardens to take in a spot of greenery whilst en route to the Museum of Contemporary Arts (MOCA), a treat for art lovers, big or small! With their geometric facade and floor to ceiling
windows, it’s a perfect afternoon spent meandering through one of their exhibitions (they are currently running an awesome ‘Urban Graphic’ exhibition). Whilst your in the mood for art, don’t miss out on the Yuz Museum as well, another artistic addition to the Shanghai scene which also runs educational programmes for kids, worth a visit! Next up, promenade along the Bind, little ones will be inspired by the mixture of old and new and transfixed by the melee of people busying about their day; not to mention, the skyline is like something from a sci-fi movie! For grown-ups, top off the day with a cocktail in hand at Cloud 9 bar in Jin Mao
Tower (a Gotham-esque art deco monolith) or check out the Edition hotel’s Canton Disco restaurant, run by Jason Atherton, another homage to cool design with slick interiors too good to miss. Paying a nod to historical architecture, head to Zhujiajiao, an ancient ‘water town’ within Shanghai, made up of traditional Chinese buildings, pagodas and waterways. The awesome arched bridges date back to the Ming and Qing Dynasties, some 1700 years - a prime example of design standing the test of time! It’s a perfect day trip for the whole family. Whatever you do, be sure to make a pitstop for some snacks in Shanghai; don’t miss the stalls on Changle and Xiangyang roads. Meat and vegetable steamed buns, scallion flatbread and egg-filled crepes sell for about 1 yuan apiece. You can picnic at nearby Fuxing Park! Little
ones will love visiting the maestro at Wang Hao Wang (123 Xiangyang Lu; 86-21-6466-0832) who twists and pulls blocks of dough into noodles, and adds into boiling broth. For Xiao Long Bao dumplings, it has to be a visit to Din Tai Fung.
a historic village starring 50 Ming and Qing Dynasty houses (which were due to be wiped out by plans for an artificial lake some 700km from Shanghai) - a feat of design, engineering and environmentalism!
And for a place for you and the family to rest your head, there is an array of hotels to choose from, each with their own unique design. Check out the PuLi for an urban resort style stay with the kids, as designed by Kume Sekkei and Layan Design Group, or the Waterhouse at South Bund, an old 1930’s block transformed by legendary Shanghai based designers Neri & Hu (also don’t miss their Design Republic store which showcase their work and inspirations, and has design trinkets for sale). At the top end of the budget, Amanyangyun is not to be missed; it’s worth a trip to marvel at the result of a 15-year initiative to relocate a forest and reconstruct
Phew, that just about covers a few must-dos for our Maggie & Rosers in this urban playground! And did you know, Maggie & Rose will be adding its own design style to the pot in Shanghai in the not too distant future…keep your eyes peeled for news about our second club in mainland China (after Hangzhou!) set to open in Shanghai soon!
