RESEARCH

Word & Image II
The Missouri Botanical Gardens (MoBot) were certainly my biggest source of reference for the project, and really motivated me as a designer. Having had a recent trip to the gardens, I drew a lot of inspiration from my own experience; one of the best surprises for me was the emphasis on intentionality, and exploring the gardens with an emphasis on culture. I enjoyed that the journey through the grounds could be very nonlinear if you wanted it to be, and I wanted to represent all of these aspects in my poster. My visual research followed my inspiration from the gardens, and led me to exploring the extensive image galleries MoBot has to offer. Even though I didn’t end up using most of the photographs, it helped to see all the natural, architectural, and cultural activity that happened in the various gardens, and its significance for the institution as a whole. For the engineering of the poster itself, I turned to event posters and the examples of folded posters I could find. I focused on identifying different balances between word and images, as well as techniques that involved overlapping folds and ones where fold layouts were completely separated.

DISCOVERY
10
Word & Image II
Picking my fold for the project involved creating dozens of different mock ups, and then deciphering which ones could relate to my concept best .Since i wanted to present 6 international gardens in no particular emphasis or order, it was helpful to have some sort of sequentially-unfolding poster; this insight led me to choosing the accordion fold, that would reveal hidden bits of the paper and then open up into a most poster-like layout. For the design overall, thumb-nailing was necessary in order to figure out how to pace my poster. I would be able to draw all the fold faces on the same page, so that I could evaluate the different designs and pacing at the same time

REFINEMENT
16
Word & Image II
The major change I made during refinement was switching my inside poster from a vertical layout to a horizontal layout. The new orientation helped improve my typographic placement, but also helped emphasize the landscape and exploratory qualities of the Botanical Gardens. Since the beginning of the project was so focused on layout, I ended up doing most of my type and color studies in this stage. Refining the color palette and making it more meaningful really drove my poster’s concept farther. I also spent a lot of time iterating on the placement of the captions and the titles, to improve the feeling of a consistent grid on the inside of my poster. I also finalized the wordage on my poster, specifically in the opening accordion layout. I had changed the words and placement of text several times in this process, and was finally able to reach a direction where the words were a surprise to the reader, and still effectively got my message across.

If I were to do the project again, I would be more creative in the fold I chose. This part of the process was rushed for me, and I could have spent much more time matching fold and concept together. I may have chosen a fold that offered more opportunities to overlap unrelated areas, so that I could be more creative with the layout and intersections of my design.
