FRANK’S

MAGIC JOURNEY

Illustrated by Maggie Yates

Story by Bob Buckenmayer

Frank is a pug who really enjoys His time with his Emma and all of his toys. A cat that is stuffed, with big eyes that are blue, A dog made of fabric that Frank likes to chew. There’s two plastic dragons and balls to go chase. The toys and the yard make his home a fun place.

One day a rabbit came looking to eat. The flowers and grass are a rabbity treat. Frank spied the intruder who hopped out the gate. Temptation to have a good chase was too great.

The rabbit ran onto a path to the town, So Frank without thinking chased rabbit on down. When weeds on the side grew increasingly thick, The rabbit went hiding especially quick.

Frank was still running, got lost as can be, ’til people and buildings were all he could see. “That rabbit,” thought Frank, “he led me astray. I’m far from my home and I don’t know my way.”

He ran down an alley, away from the streets. Along came a man with a handful of treats. “How friendly,” thought Frank, “and those cookies look great.” Before he could snack, he was put in a crate. He was stuck in a truck with a rattling sound, To go for a ride to a cage at the pound.

On concrete, a towel was there as his bed. They gave him no toys and they chained him instead. He felt it’s no way to be treating a dog, But his day of misdeeds made him sleep like a log.

As deep as he slept he was dreaming real soon. He dreamt of a rocket ship flight to the moon.

“How can I see things from out here in space? I’ll live on the moon and become its new face.” As he looked from the moon to the starry night sky, He saw both the dragons on clouds floating by.

“Amazing,” thought Frank, “how my toys can be here. When I bring them to mind I can make them appear.” He dreamt the toy dog and the cat came alive, Then dreamt up a garden where they could arrive. A wonderful, beautiful, magical spot, Where toys can be real and his problems forgot.

Frank was so happy his toys were all there, He flew from the moon to observe them with care.

They all thought the garden a beautiful sight, A place to have fun, through the day and the night.

The dragons were playful, mischievous too. Frank watched them have fun in the sweet morning dew. “Hey Frank,” said the dragon, “we like this so much, The flowers with showers are such a nice touch.”

“We’ve something to show you, a lesson to heed. It’s hard to catch rabbits, they have too much speed. “We dragons are fast. You will see when we fly.” The dogs were in awe as the dragons raced by. Frank watched them intently and hoped he would learn To be fast like a dragon when it was his turn.

The cat asked the dragons, “How fast did you say?” “So fast you can’t catch us if we fly away.”

But the cat chased the dragons and caught one with ease. “You win,” said the dragon, “now let me go, please?” The cat spoke to Frank when he set dragon free, “As fast as I am, rabbit’s faster than me.”

All of these lessons made Frank realize, That catching a rabbit is not a good prize. “I love to go run, and I like to stand guard, But I see that it’s foolish to run from my yard. “This garden has taught me that friends are the best, Don’t have to leave home and I’ll give it a rest.”

So Frank was delighted they all got along. Just playing together their friendship was strong.

Their games and relaxing made life such a treat. Frank thought “If this lasts, it would be really sweet. “But I know it will end. What will happen instead? I need to go think about what lies ahead.”

“I’m done chasing rabbits. Oh what a mistake! I wish I were home just as soon as I wake. “Not in the moon, a real garden instead. Not in a cage, but back in my bed. “How will I manage to get myself free? Who can I turn to? Where is the key? “That magical, mystical, mythical beast, A dragon might know how to get me released.”

“I’m feeling so happy,” said Frank to his friend. “But I’m worrying now that this dream will soon end.” Frank started to cry as he looked to the stars, “Once I’m awake, I’ll be back behind bars.”

“I’m desperate,” said Frank, “do you have any tricks To help get me out of this horrible fix?” “We dragons can cast you a magical spell, This purple dust gets you right out of that cell.”

Frank was surprised when he woke the next day. His Emma had come. She would take him away! Her love is so special, he missed her so much. It was such a relief when he felt her soft touch. She brought him the dragons, placed right by her knee. But they were just plastic as stiff as can be.

Frank looked at the toys and before he could blink, One of them gave him a smile and a wink. He shook his big head and he stared in surprise, “That dragon’s not real, it’s the dust in my eyes. “It’s time to go home. I can’t wait to get back, To my toys and my bed and a real doggie snack.”

Tucked safe in her arms is when Frank finally knew His place was at home and that dreams do come true.
