neurology: a type of medicine concerning diseases and conditions of the brain, spinal cord, and nerves.
common neurological conditions treated: attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder, dementia, encephalopathy, epilepsy, meningitis, migraine, muscular dystrophy, neuropathy, Parkinson’s disease, and stroke.
scottsdale, arizona climate + geography: an arid climate with an average temperature of 78°F in the Salt River Valley, touching the Sonoran Desert
demographics: population of 241,361 people
Before the first European settlers arrived, the beautiful land of Arizona was home to the indigenous tribes, Paytayan + Hohokam, today known as Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community. One of the many inspiring attributes about O’odham-Piipaash - the preferred pronouns of the Pima and Maricopa tribes - is that they live a balanced lives. They don’t want to many high points in their lives because that leads to very low points. They want to live a very calm and balanced life.
Taking inspiration from the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community, the muse behind the design of Scottsdale Neurology + Sleep Center is balance. After studying the importance of balance, In a healthcare setting, a balanced atmosphere will encourage a balanced mindset. MRM Group felt compelled to incorporate the idea into the overall aesthetic through curvilinear shapes and soft and warm colors pulled from the alluring landscape of Scottsdale, Arizona.

patient and guests all have different feelings and emotions when entering a healthcare facility. greeted by a soft and warm reception area helps calm the nerves of some individuals.
mirroring each other, the custom ceiling baffles and desks have a curvilinear shape to act as a warm embrace for guests.
natural materials, vegetation, and a warm wallcovering resemble the landscape of scottsdale, arizona.
separating the reception of the eeg + sleep study and the neurological rehabilitation reception desk is a terrarium of cacti, to create separation of the two spaces, while balancing the area.
many factors in design take place due to the variety of neurological diseases and conditions within the facility. for better accessibility, handrails are embedded into the walls to create better stability for patient.
the handrails are illuminated by LED lighting for those who have a visual impairment. a sense of direction is influenced by the different tones of floor, creating an easier path for patient and guests.
outside every room is an arch including the room number and room type, all with braille lettering. every room is also equipped with hand sanitizer inside and outside of the door.
adjacent to the reception, the family lounge hosts a variety of seating to accommodate those who may use the space.
witnessing a family member deal with any sort of health condition is stressful and emotional. the family lounge is a safe place for guest to retreat and decompress.
large picture windows and Samsung Frame TV’s are intended to distract and take a load off the minds of those who reside in the family lounge.
art in the space is sourced from local artist as a way to support the community and showcase the gorgeous landscape of arizona.
nature is statistically proven to uplift spirits, which is why an abundance of vegetation is incorporated into the family lounge.
patient spend anywhere from 30 minutes to six hours in an EEG or EMG room. it is important for them to have a variety of seating.
due to the lengthy appointment of a treatment, the space needed to be calming to decrease any stress or anxiety of patient and guests.
the accent wallcovering is a nod to the concept of balance and the topography of the hospital’s location.
customizable casing from Herman-Miller is used throughout the entire hospital. a tv is integrated into this space for those who have an extended hospital visit.
due to the nature of an EMG, a wooden table needs to be used so it doesn’t interfere with any of the recordings.
similar to the EEG room, the EMG room also has a tv for patient with a longer appointment.
the intake neurological rehabilitation patient may have a stay of up to three weeks, which is why their rooms are larger and have a variety of amenities.
directly across from the entrance of the room is the patient bed for nurses and doctors to have a direct vision of the patient. the room’s restroom is near the front entrance as well.
the bed has access to all the necessary equipment and is accompanied by a bedside table, an over the bed table, and a recliner and window seating for any guests to sit or rest near the patient.
many neurology patients experience sensitivity to light. on the exterior of the building, motorized blinds shade from any direct sunlight in the room.
the motorized blinds shade from any direct sunlight. the pivot system is connected to the circadian rhythm of the sun. the above diagram shows the tracking of sun travel during different times in the year.
opposite of the bed is an accent wall with a tv for entertainment of the patient. the Herman-Miller casing is also implemented in the recovery suite.
the pivoting slats continue from the exterior of the building to the interior. the slats can be opened and closed at the discretion of the user. the intentional placement of the blinds helps doctors and nurses to have better visualization of patients behind the wall.
opposite of the wall is a living area, equipped with an entertainment area, a writing desk, and a wardrobe.
the living space has light-weight seating for ease of movement if guests want to surround the bed area. the love seat extends into a bed for any overnight guests.
a large bathroom is great for accessibility and patients with an elongated stay.
the infusion room’s layout includes a nursing station for best monitoring of patients.
an arched motif continues throughout the infusion room, creating a cove-like feel, intended to make users more relaxed.
mobile procedure and support carts make monitoring patients easier for nurses and doctors.
the functionality of the nurses station is a great help to the patient’s experience because it is included in the infusion center.
the serene infusion space helps relax the new and returning patients of the infusion center. the skylight above allows for natural daylight in the space, but is equipped with automatic shades.
across from the infusion chairs is a terrarium of local vegetation. the beautiful feature is an element of distraction.
the pivoting slat walls divide each infusion space, letting the patients decide if they would like more privacy or the ability to converse with the patient next to them.
the sleep center is a place for patients to have their sleep cycles and patterns monitored. a large, adjustable bed centers the room. additional seating is added for lounging before tests, or guests to accompany the patients. no windows are in the space to limit any noise from outside and light leaking into the room.
the arch creates a cove for the bed creating a comforting ambiance for patients.
the beautiful setting of the bed is accompanied by two night stands for setting personal items and storing medical equipment.
a television is provided for entertainment before bed, but sleep center patients have curfew of 10:00 pm for lights and electronics to be turned off.
patients have the ability to have guests stay the night with them. a pullout sofa accommodates those guests.
a sink and wardrobe are put in the space for patients to use, as patients of the sleep center stay overnight.
