SEASON PREVIEW
IOWA MEN’S GOLF Since taking command of the University of Iowa men’s golf program in 2007, head coach Mark Hankins has established the Hawkeyes as a competitive force in collegiate golf. Iowa has advanced to NCAA Regionals each of the past five seasons, and has advanced to the NCAA Finals three of the last five seasons. Heading into the 2013-14 season the Hawkeyes will be experienced with seven returning players back from a team that won the Boilermaker Invitational and placed third at the Big Ten Championships. Iowa also added two freshmen, giving Hankins a deep squad. “Our players are going to be looking around at each other knowing that anyone could beat them any given week,” Hankins said. “It provides motivation because you can’t take a week off. It’s going to be extremely intense, and the competition within the squad is going to be high.” The roster is highlighted by five returning letterwinners, including senior Steven Ihm, who posted the lowest scoring-average for the Hawkeyes (72.28) last season. The Peosta, Iowa, native built off a strong junior season by posting several successful outings over the summer of 2013, including winning the 60th Annual Sunnehanna Amateur Tournament in Johnstown, Pa., and playing in his first-ever PGA TOUR event in the John Deere Classic. “Steven is coming in with a lot of expectations and hype,” Hankins said. “He still has some unfinished goals from last year. He was very close to being Big Ten Player of the Year, finishing second in the rankings. He’ll be the highest ranked returner in the conference.” Ihm shared medalist honors at the Boilermaker Invitational and the Hawkeye/Great River Entertainment Invitational last season, garnering All-Big Ten and all-region honors. He is currently ranked No. 39 in the World Amateur Golf Rankings. Junior Brian Bullington finished last season with three straight finishes in the top24, and posted a 73.92 stroke average during the spring. Bullington was the mark of consistency for the Hawkeyes, holding the fourth-lowest scoring average (74.60) and tying for the team-high total in regular season rounds played (28). The Frankfort, Ill., native placed 21st place in the Hawkeye/Great River Entertainment Invitational in the spring of 2013. “Brian showed a lot of promise last year, and was one of our most consistent players in the spring,” Hankins said. “We have a lot of expectations for Brian, and he has put in a lot of hard work. He’s looking forward to his junior year, and feels like he could be the No. 1 guy on this team.” Senior Ryan Marks will look to close out his Hawkeye career with a consistent and complete season after playing in six tournaments last year. He tied for 31st at the Golfweek Conference Challenge. “Ryan wants to be a professional golfer, and he is determined to have a solid year and contribute by not only making the traveling squad, but by competing for championships,” Hankins said. “He needs to accept his role as a senior, do things the right way, and believe that is going to produce his desired results.” Ian Vandersee enters his junior season after a sophomore campaign in which he shot a team and season-low 18-hole score of 65 at the Baylor Intercollegiate, an event that he won. He also tied for 11th place at the Hawkeye/Great River Entertainment Invitational. “For Ian, this season is about continuing to gain confidence and consistency,” Hankins said. “He had flashes of greatness (last season). He was our best player at the Baylor Invitational, and he has the talent and motivation to be a top player for us.” Junior Joseph Winslow shot even par or better twice as a sophomore, tying for fourth place at the Boilermaker Invitational, and fifth place at the Big Ten Championships. Winslow was named to the Division I PING All-Midwest Regional Team and was a second team All-Big Ten selection.

“(Joe) played a lot of golf this summer, and he continues to get stronger physically and with his mental game,” Hankins said. “It’s his junior year, and he’s going to be focused on being competitive for that No. 1 spot.” Nate Yankovich played in five events as a true freshman, and enters his sophomore season feeling confident and comfortable with the system. He earned his first career top-20 finish at the Hawkeye/Great River Entertainment Invitational, and tied for 37th at the Big Ten Championships. “Nate had a nice spring, and helped propel us into the NCAAs,” Hankins said. “He improved over the summer, and is still growing and maturing. Now it’s going to be a matter of taking on new goals and a new role.” Sophomore Voramate Aussarassakorn enters the 2013-14 campaign after a strong summer back home in Thailand, in which he won the True Vision Amateur Championship, A-Class Amateur Championship, and the July Thailand Sport Hero event. “Voramate came in pretty highly-decorated (as a freshman),” Hankins said. “After one full year here, he’s much more adept on what he’s supposed to be doing, where he’s supposed to go, and what our system is going to entail. He played well this summer and will look to make an impact.” The Hawkeyes incoming class consists of two juniors who both ranked No. 1 in their respective home states’ junior golf rankings for the class of 2013. Raymond Knoll, a native of Naperville, Ill., and product of Naperville North High School, won the 2012 Illinois Junior Amateur, the MAJGT Windy City Open, the PJGT John Deere Classic, and qualified for the 2012 U.S. Junior Amateur after winning the Illinois qualifier. “Ray is an experienced junior,” said Hankins. “He has played all over the country, and in the biggest junior tournaments. He is very comfortable in the college setting, and we’re excited to see what he can do.” Carson Schaake hails from Omaha, Neb., where he attended Creighton Prep. Schaake won the Nebraska Class A State High School Championship in 2012, placed second in the PGA Junior Series at Arbor Links, fifth in the Nebraska Men’s Amateur, and qualified for the U.S. Junior Amateur after winning the Nebraska qualifier. “Carson is a really competitive kid,” Hankins said. “He had success in the state of Nebraska this summer and has plenty of talent to adjust to college golf. “Both of these guys will feel nerves in qualifying, but that’s why we’ll have a lot of competition within the squad. We’ve got nine good players, and every one of those guys want to play.” The Hawkeyes’ 2013-14 schedule is nearly identical to the 2012-13 slate, with the only differences coming in the addition the Windon Invitational in Chicago and the ASU Thunderbird Invitational in Tempe, Ariz. The Hawkeyes will defend their tournament title at the Boilermaker Invitational on April 19-20. Hankins says his team will be comfortable in tournaments they have already experienced. “Our travel arrangements are set, we know when we need to get there, where to stay, and what to do,” he said. “There’s a lot less distractions. We’re comfortable going back to places we’ve been because we understand the level of competition, and what we’re going to have to play up to.” While Iowa’s schedule may be familiar to Hankins and his golfers, the difficulty level still remains high. “It’s a highly competitive schedule, and the last couple years, it has been the top schedule in the Big Ten,” Hankins said. “We have more experience this year, but we need to have the discipline to do the work day-by-day. We’ve got nine guys that all want to play No. 1, and whoever qualifies low is going to play it. “It’s a brand new year, a brand new slate. If we play up to our potential, continue to improve and fight for every stroke, well make our sixth-straight trip to the NCAA’s.”

The 2010 Hawkeyes finished the season ranked 36th in the nation and earned their best Big Ten finish (second) since 1992. Additionally, the Hawkeyes picked up their second tournament title in as many seasons with a win at the 2010 TaylorMade-adidas Hawkeye Invitational. Iowa finished tied for sixth in the NCAA Central Regional. The Hawkeyes’ climb in the national rankings began in 2009 under Hankins. Iowa jumped from 155th to 54th during the season as it picked up its first tournament title since 2004 by winning the 2008 Landfall Tradition in Wilmington, N.C. Hankins coached the Black and Gold to a fifth place finish at the 2009 Southeast Regionals and a 17th place finish at the NCAA Championships in Toledo, OH; marking the first time the Hawkeyes qualified for the championships since 1995.

ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIPS
IOWA MEN’S GOLF Chuck Zwiener Endowed Scholarship
E.J. Liechty Endowed Scholarship
Chuck Zwiener served as men’s golf coach at the University of Iowa from 1958 through 1989, coaching the Hawkeyes for 32 years. In his honor, family and friends established the Chuck Zwiener Scholarship in 1992, to be awarded each year to an outstanding member of the Iowa golf team. Upon taking over the Iowa program in 1958, Zwiener immediately led his first three Hawkeye teams into NCAA postseason action. During his tenure, Zwiener placed six players on the PGA tour, one of which went on to become a two-time PGA club winner of the year. Sixteen of Zwiener’s former players went on to become head PGA professionals at some of the finest golf courses in the state of Iowa. He also led the Hawkeyes to 10 first division finishes in the Big Ten and eight Hawkeyes earned All‑Big Ten honors. For further information, or to make a gift to the Zwiener Scholarship Fund, contact the UI Foundation, 500 Alumni Center, Iowa City, IA 52242.
The E.J. Liechty Scholarship, for men’s intercollegiate athletics, was established in 1995 by Ailene Liechty in memory of her husband, E.J. “Jack” Liechty. Since 1997, the annual scholarship has been awarded to a deserving student-athlete who is a member of the Iowa golf team. Jack Liechty was a devoted supporter of the University of Iowa, especially in the areas of athletics and arts. He was known for his humor and his willingness to lend a helping hand. Jack was a newspaperman all his life, entering the business in 1930 as the Iowa City circulation manager for the Des Moines Register. He joined the Iowa City Press-Citizen in 1934 as circulation manager, and went on to become president and publisher from 1962-1966. He was named president of Speidel Newspapers, Inc., the parent company of the Press-Citizen, in 1966. Jack retired in 1972, although he continued to serve on the executive committee until 1977, when Speidel merged with Gannett Co., Inc., the nation’s largest newspaper company. Over the years, Jack contributed to many projects across the University of Iowa campus, and in 1983 he received the Distinguished Friend Award from the UI Alumni Association. Jack died in 1994 at the age of 85. His son, John Liechty, was a second team All-American in 1958 and three-time golf letter winner for head coaches Bucky O’Connor and Chuck Zwiener. For further information, or to make a gift to the E.J. Liechty Scholarship Fund, contact the UI Foundation, P.O. Box 4550, Iowa City, IA 52242-4550.

IOWA MEN’S GOLF Bucky O’Connor Endowed Scholarship
James Hoak Men’s Golf Scholarship Fund
The Bucky O’Connor Endowed Scholarship fund now endows both a basketball and golf scholarship at the University of Iowa. Since 1994, the scholarship provides a full ride, tuition, room, board and books for a member of the Iowa golf team. O’Connor coached the Iowa golf team from 1949‑56, and had a dual meet record of 39‑30‑4. His 1954 team placed second in the Big Ten tournament, and 11th in the NCAA meet. Also serving as Iowa’s basketball coach from 1951‑58, O’Connor directed his teams to a 108‑54 record, including two Big Ten championships and two NCAA Final Four appearances. O’Connor joined the Hawkeye staff in 1948 and coached the Hawkeyes until he was killed in an automobile accident in April, 1958. For further information, or to make a gift to the O’Connor Scholarship Fund, contact the UI Foundation, 500 Alumni Center, Iowa City, IA 52242.
The James M. Hoak Scholarship is designated for deserving student-athletes on the UI men’s golf team. Hoak is a 1940 graduate from the University of Iowa, former Des Moines businessman and currently resides in North Palm Beach, FL. Long-time friend, Clark A. Johnson and Hoak’s three sons, David A. Hoak (a 1968 UI business graduate), Jon S. Hoak and James M. Hoak Jr. made gift commitments to the UI Foundation to establish an endowed athletics scholarship fund in Hoak’s name. While at Iowa, James M. Hoak lettered in golf and roomed with UI football legend Nile Kinnick. Hoak attended the M.B.A. program at Harvard University in the early 1940’s and after service in the Navy during World War II, joined the family business, the Wheeler Lumber Company, headquartered in Des Moines. He served as the firm’s president for more than 20 years before retiring in 1985. Hoak and his wife, Jane, a 1941 UI graduate, have been UI supporters and volunteers for many years, and are members of the Presidents Club, which recognizes the UI’s most generous contributors. “Jim graduated from the university nearly 68 years ago, and I left campus in 1953, but neither of us has ever lost his enthusiasm for the university, and for its mission of equipping students with the tools to succeed in life after college,” said Johnson. “Jim’s been so important to the university over the years, and I wanted to do something to honor his love for the U of I while he and his family could enjoy and participate in that recognition.” “The James Hoak Scholarship represents a real win-win for the UI athletics program,” UI Athletics Director Gary Barta said. “The student-athletes who earn the Hoak Scholarship will have the distinction of knowing that their awards carry the name of one of our most loyal and generous graduates -someone who knew Nile personally, and who represents the proud history and integrity of the UI athletics program.” Iowa’s new golf complex is the James M. Hoak Family Golf Complex.

WHY IOWA?
IOWA MEN’S GOLF
Sean McCarty
Jim Carney
“I think Coach Hankins has a core group of kids who are really trying to accomplish something with their golf games. He won’t accept any mediocrity and he’s really after a national championship. It would be incredible to do that in the Midwest and I think that’s really his ultimate goal; he wants to be the best in the country.”
Lonnie Nielson
Head Coach Mark Hankins and Zach Johnson at 2013 John Deere Classic.
“The best thing I ever did was choose to attend the University of Iowa. We had a great golf program and traveled all over the country. The University of Iowa is a great school and Iowa City is a great college town. Overall, it is a great place to go to school.”
Gary Updedgraff -- 1978 Iowa Alum
Sean McCarty - 1995 Iowa Alum and 1995 All-American Director of Golf - Brown Deer Golf Club
“Being a member of the Iowa golf team, competing in the Big Ten and graduating from the University of Iowa has been absolutely critical to my success at all levels. It has been absolutely key in my development of a successful law practice. Friends and acquaintances that I developed at the U of I have followed me throughout my entire professional career.”
“The years I was here were great. You get to travel all over the country and I still have life-long friends I still keep in touch with today, not only from Iowa but from other schools. It really paves the way, not only for golf but for business opportunities. It teaches you how to deal with other people and all sorts of different lifestyles. It really carries over to all different walks of life.”
Jim Carney - 1970 Iowa Alum Carney and Associates - Des Moines, IA
Bo Anderson --1999-2003
“It’s a great time to be a Hawkeye golfer. The recruiting has really picked up and these guys can play. We’re starting to get guys from all over the place and Mark (Hankins) has done a phenomenal job. There are great facilities for a great program and these guys are ready to go.”
“I am very encouraged to hear about the work Mark Hankins is doing at the University of Iowa. He is very excited and interested in making the Iowa golf program the best it can be. He was able to bring Big Ten titles to Michigan State and I am confident he can do the same for Iowa.”
Jason Price -- 1995-2000
Lonnie Nielson - 1978 Iowa Alum PGA and Champions Tour
“I’ve been in the golf business for almost 30 years now, as a head professional and director of golf in the Des Moines metro area and I’d have to say that the recognition of being an Iowa alum and on the golf team was such a positive influence in all of that. You meet people and make connections which are always positive as well.” Ross E. deBuhr -- 1977 Iowa Alum

HAWKEYE ADMINISTRATION
IOWA MEN’S GOLF Gary Barta Director of Athletics
Now in his eighth year as director of athletics at the University of Iowa, Gary Barta continues to provide the UI’s more than 600 student-athletes, in addition to more than 225 coaches, administrators and support staff, the strong leadership and strategic vision that is the foundation for the Hawkeyes’ success both today and in the future. Barta often notes, “Hope is not a strategy,” and evidence of his commitment to planning and execution is his second strategic plan for the UI Athletics Department. The latest “road map” addresses the next five years for the Hawkeyes and is built on the same core tenets contained in the first: Win. Graduate. Do it right. The Hawkeyes are coming off a 2012-13 athletics year that saw eight programs participate in national championship competition, a record-setting year in terms of graduation rates – 77 percent, and steady progress in terms of facility improvements, highlighted by the opening of the new indoor practice facility for the UI’s football program and the Hoak Family Golf Complex at Finkbine Golf Course, home of the Hawkeyes’ men’s and women’s golf programs. Under Barta’s direction, the UI will continue to put into place the infrastructure that will provide the foundation for competitive success. The 2012-13 basketball season provides an outstanding example of the impact state-of-the-art facilities can have on a program. Boosted by a new practice facility and an enhanced strength and conditioning facility – two pieces of Barta’s first strategic plan for the UI – Fran McCaffery’s Iowa men’s basketball team won 25 games and advanced to the championship game of the 2013 National Invitation Tournament. Lisa Bluder’s Iowa women’s basketball team earned its sixth consecutive invitation to the NCAA Tournament. Another example of investments made under Barta’s direction that have helped Iowa turn the corner competitively is the UI men’s golf program. Barta increased his commitment to the sport when he hired native Iowan Mark Hankins, who had a vision for the program that included a new practice facility. Barta, Hankins and the Hawkeyes celebrated the opening of the new $6 million Hoak Family Golf Complex in February, just three months before Hankins’ nationally ranked squad made its fifth straight appearance in the national regional championships. Women’s basketball and men’s golf are two of the eight UI programs that participated in national championship competition in 2012-13. At the top of the list was Tom Brands’ wrestling program, which crowned one national champion, had four wrestlers earn All-America honors, and finished fourth nationally at the end of a season that included a Big Ten Conference Dual Meet championship. JD Reive’s men’s gymnastics team had three individuals earn All-America honors after finishing fifth at the national meet. Larissa Libby’s women’s gymnastics program advanced to NCAA regional competition for the sixth straight season. The Iowa field hockey program under the direction of Tracy Greisbaum advanced to its sixth NCAA Tournament over the last nine years and 22nd in school history – a total that ranks No. 1 among the Hawkeyes’ Big Ten Conference peers. Two Hawkeyes were named All-Americans. Iowa’s 200 and 400 medley relay teams and backstroker Grant Betulius earned AllAmerica honors while leading Marc Long’s men’s swimming and diving team to a 32nd place at the national championship. Larry Wieczorek’s UI track and field program crowned eight AllAmericans en route to placing 35th at the national outdoor championship. Interest in the Hawkeyes continues to soar. Sellouts for home games of the football team at historic Kinnick Stadium and a waiting list for access to the premium seating areas inside the Paul W. Brechler Press Box are the norm. So, too, is Iowa leading the country in attendance at home wrestling events -- Iowa averaged just under 9,000 fans per home dual match in 201213 – and being ranked among the nation’s Top 20 in attendance in women’s basketball. Success on the court has also resulted in spinning turnstiles for home games of the UI men’s basketball team. The Hawkeyes’ run to New York City’s Madison Square Garden and the NIT championship game included a pair of sold out games on Mediacom Court in 15,400-seat Carver-Hawkeye Arena. Those two sellouts, paired with three regular season sellouts, helped to push Iowa’s total average per game to 13,625, an improvement of more than 1,700 per game that has pushed the Hawkeyes into the nation’s Top 25 in per game attendance. Under Barta’s leadership, Iowa has also embraced new technologies and that, too, has paid dividends: Iowa ranks among the nation’s Top 10 in Facebook “friends” and Twitter “followers.” The UI also delivers Hawk Talk Daily, a daily e-newsletter, and Hawk Talk Monthly,
5-straight NCAA appearances
a monthly e-magazine, to more than 70,000 friends of the UI and fans of the Hawkeyes to complement the news, information, video and photography available on hawkeyesports.com, the official world wide web site of the Iowa Hawkeyes and the UI’s anchor in the digital world. Academically, Iowa continues to achieve at a pace that sets the bar across the state and competes favorably with its peers in the Big Ten Conference. UI student-athletes set new records for academic achievement, according to data released by the NCAA in October 2012, as part of its annual report on the work in the classroom by student-athletes across the country. Student-athletes that entered the UI in the fall of 2005 graduated at a rate of 77 percent, an all-time record for the Hawkeyes. That mark - which uses the federal government benchmark for graduation success – is three points better than the 2011 report when Iowa tied the previous school record of 74 percent set first in 1994-95. It is also six points better than the UI student body and 12 points better than that achieved all by student-athletes nationally. The UI also set a new record by posting a score of 87 percent in the NCAA’s “Graduation Success Rate” or GSR, one point better than what was posted the previous year. It marked the seventh time in the eight years of the GSR’s existence that Iowa’s student-athletes scored 80 percent or better. The NCAA’s Academic Progress Rate report for 2012-13 revealed that for the fourth consecutive year all of Iowa’s 24 sports programs were comfortably above the 930 threshold that signals a red flag for the NCAA. The highlights of Iowa’s report include APR’s for 18 of Iowa’s programs that were better than the national average in that sport, including football, men’s basketball and wrestling. The APR for Iowa’s football program – 961 – was an all-time best. As noted, Barta has been the driving force behind substantial investments in the facilities used by Iowa’s talented male and female student-athletes. When the Iowa football program moves into its new $54 million operations center in late summer 2014, the UI will have completed more than $220 million of construction and renovation work over the previous eight years. That list of projects includes a $47 million facelift and addition to Iowa’s award-winning Carver-Hawkeye Arena, a project that directly impacted 23 of Iowa’s 24 sports programs, two phases of improvements to the facilities used daily by Iowa’s football program – construction of a new indoor practice facility and renovation of the Kenyon Outdoor Practice facility in Phase I, and construction of a state-of-the-art operations center in Phase II, a $9 million investment in scoreboards, ribbon boards, and video walls at historic Kinnick Stadium, construction of the aforementioned $6 million Hoak Family Golf Complex at Iowa’s award-winning Finkbine Golf Course, turf replacement at Grant Field, the home of Iowa’s nationally ranked field hockey program, resurfacing of the courts at the Klotz Tennis Center, the home of Iowa’s men’s and women’s tennis programs, and the construction of a new indoor turf facility. On the horizon for Barta, from a facilities perspective, is the planning and construction of the “Hawkeye Campus.” Located on the western edge of the UI campus, immediately west of Finkbine Golf Course and adjacent to the UI’s Athletics Hall of Fame, the practice and competition sites for Iowa’s soccer and field hockey programs, and the UI Sports Medicine Clinic, and near the UI’s Ashton Cross Country Course, the Hawkeye Campus is envisioned to be the new home for Iowa’s track and field, softball, and baseball programs. Barta is a member of the President’s Cabinet, comprised of vice presidents and other campus leaders that provide counsel to UI President Sally Mason. That group was instrumental in the UI’s response to record-setting flooding that besieged the campus and the Iowa City and Coralville community in June 2008. As the director of athletics at the University of Wyoming for three years, seven different UW coaches were named Mountain West Conference Coach of the Year. He also spearheaded a fund-raising effort that netted the Cowboy athletics program $11 million in private support and $11 million in matching state fund. As the senior associate athletics director at the University of Washington, he directed the “Campaign for the Student-Athlete,” was a participant in the design, construction and/or renovation of several UW athletics facilities, including Bank of America Arena and the Dempsey Indoor Practice Facility. His responsibilities at Washington expanded over time to include hiring of coaching and administrative staff, and the day-to-day oversight of several Huskie sport teams. The roots of his development experience extend to his first two positions: director of athletics development and external relations at the University of Northern Iowa and director of development at his alma mater, North Dakota State University. Barta earned a Bachelor of Science degree in mass communication and broadcast journalism from NDSU in 1987. He was an option quarterback for Bison football squads that won the Division II NCAA National Championship in 1983, 1985 and 1986. Barta, and his wife, Connie, have a son, Luke (15) and a daughter, Madison (13). He was born Sept. 4, 1963, in Minneapolis.

HAWKEYE ATHLETICS - A TOTAL PROGRAM
IOWA MEN’S GOLF Hawkeyes Continue to Build for Success The UI Department of Athletics is under the direction of Gary Barta and is regarded as one of the top intercollegiate programs in the nation. Once again, the Hawkeyes enjoyed success both athletically and academically in 2012-13.
Iowa Men’s Golf
Head coach Mark Hankins led the Hawkeyes to their fifth-straight NCAA Regional appearance in 2013 and two student-athletes garnered all-region honors. Senior Steven Ihm made a splash in the summer, winning the Sunnehanna Amateur and competing on the PGA Tour in the 2013 John Deere Classic.
Academically, the UI’s federal graduation rate of 77 percent (for studentathletes who enrolled in the fall of 2005) is the best mark in school history. That mark was six points better than the UI student body and 12 points better than achieved by student-athletes nationally. For the fourth consecutive year, all 24 of Iowa’s teams exceeded the Academic Progress Rate (APR) benchmark and the program posted a record 87 percent in the NCAA’s “Graduation Success Rate.” It is the seventh time in eight years of the GSR’s existence that Iowa’s student-athletes scored 80 percent or better.
Third-year head coach Fran McCaffery led the Hawkeyes to 25 wins -- matching the second-highest win total in school history -- and to the championship game of the National Invitation Tournament. The team’s success saw increased attendance, as Iowa had six sellouts at CarverHawkeye Arena, which led to a No. 21 national home attendance ranking.
Athletically, Hawkeye teams enjoyed another outstanding year in 201213, as a significant number of Iowa’s 24 programs reached postseason play. The Iowa men’s basketball team advanced to the championship game of the National Invitation Tournament, the women’s basketball team competed in the NCAA Tournament for the sixth straight season and the wrestling team finished fourth at the NCAA Championships.
The Hawkeye men’s gymnastics team completed its most successful season in nearly a decade in 2013. Iowa finished fifth nationally at the NCAA Championships, marking the program’s best finish since 2000. The Hawkeyes had three individuals earn All-America recognition, including Javier Balboa, who was the first all-around Iowa honoree since 2005.
In February, 2013, the UI dedicated the James M. Hoak Family Golf Complex, a state-of-the-art golf facility featuring an indoor putting and chipping green and two indoor-to-outdoor heated practice bays. It came on the heels of the completion of a $47 million revitalization of Carver-Hawkeye Arena in the summer of 2011. That project included the construction of a practice facility for men’s and women’s basketball and volleyball, a 10,000-square-foot strength training and cardiovascular center, and an expansion to the Dan Gable Wrestling Complex, in addition to new locker room and support facilities for men’s and women’s basketball, wrestling and volleyball programs, and office space for the majority of Iowa administrative and coaching staffs.
Iowa Men’s Track & Field
Phase I of a two-phase project for the UI football program was completed in August, 2012. Phase I included a new indoor practice facility for head coach Kirk Ferentz’ football program that has competed in 10 bowl games over the past 12 seasons. Phase II includes construction of the new Iowa Football Operations Center, which will include new team locker rooms, team meeting rooms, athletic medical training space, video operations, and coaches offices and meeting rooms. Funded entirely through private support and revenue generated by the UI Athletics Department, the project is an important next phase of the master facilities plan for Hawkeye football.

Iowa Men’s Basketball
Iowa Men’s Gymnastics
The men’s track and field team placed 35th at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships and earned All-America recognition in nine events. Senior Justin Austin swept the Big Ten Athlete of the Championships and Big Ten Athlete of the Year honors for the second time in his career.
Iowa Wrestling The Hawkeye wrestling team -- the national attendance leader in each of the last seven seasons -- continued its dominance on the mat, finishing fourth at the NCAA Championships. Four Hawkeyes earned All-America accolades in 2013, including 157-pound national champion Derek St. John. Iowa has claimed 23 national championships since 1975 and 34 Big Ten titles in its history.

ATHLETIC STUDENT SERVICES
IOWA MEN’S GOLF Since its inception in 1979, Athletics Student Services has evolved from a two-person, academic support service to a broad-based, nationally prominent student support operation. Its purpose is to offer academic and personal support services that will assist student-athletes in making timely progress toward their degrees while preparing to become tomorrow’s leaders. Athletics Student Services focuses on four important areas – academic counseling and monitoring, educational and support programs, retention programs and compliance education and services – when working with student-athletes. Following are descriptions of some of the programs, services and opportunities available in those areas. Gerdin Athletics Learning Center The $4.6 million Russell A. and Ann Gerdin Athletics Learning Center opened in August of 2003 and gives all Iowa student-athletes a state of the art facility to support their educational goals. The Athletics Learning Center is a 20,000 square foot facility which provides a computer lab, study lounges, seminar and meeting places for all Hawkeye student-athletes. The Learning Center features an auditorium that converts into two classrooms, separate study rooms for under and upper-class student-athletes with 28 study carrels, a computer lab, tutorial rooms, the book loan repository, offices for Iowa’s Student Services staff and a display area to recognize the academic and athletic accomplishments of Iowa’s student-athletes. Academic Counseling & Monitoring Athletics coordinators work closely with student-athletes and their university-assigned advisors from the time they arrive on campus until the time they leave the university. Along with focusing on academic planning matters such as goal-setting, plans of study, choosing majors and degree requirements, athletics coordinators also help student-athletes understand NCAA, Big Ten and university academic policies. They also solicit feedback from instructors on academic progress made by student-athletes.

Compliance Education and Services The UI Athletics Department administers a comprehensive compliance program to ensure that all staff and student-athletes act in accordance with NCAA, Big Ten Conference and University of Iowa regulations. Staff members oversee and assist with the recruiting of prospective student-athletes. They monitor the continuing eligibility of student-athletes. They oversee and administer student-athlete financial aid. They conduct rules education programs for coaches, staff, student-athletes and boosters. They monitor staff and student-athlete behavior to ensure conformity with the NCAA, Big Ten Conference, University of Iowa and Athletic Department policies and rules. Career Guidance & Development Planning a meaningful career and a fulfilling life is an ongoing process of expanding and narrowing choices, beginning when student-athletes arrive on campus and continuing throughout their college career and lifetime. The professional staff works with other career development professionals on campus to offer individual consultation, career development seminars, workshops, referrals to other campus offices and special events like the Senior Recognition Banquet for graduating student-athletes.

Such plans may include daily and weekly planning sessions with athletics coordinators and retention staff, tutoring, study groups, mainstreaming into on-campus services like the writing center, math labs and services for students with learning disabilities. Minority Enrichment Program This program offers a culturally supportive environment in which minority student-athletes develop friendships and a support network in the university. Educational Programs A full menu of educational programs are offered to student-athletes to ensure their academic success and personal development as they grow from Today’s Hawkeyes to Tomorrow’s Leaders. Through collaboration with other University of Iowa student services offices, and in partnership with the NCAA CHAMPS/ Life Skills Program, programs address such quality of life issues as alcohol safety, healthy lifestyles, tolerance and respect, career development, professional conduct and leadership development. Transition Seminar All new student-athletes attend an eight-week transition seminar during the fall semester that is geared toward helping them make the transition from high school to college successfully. Seminar topics include time management skills, learning and study strategies, the culture and rules of the university and Division I Big Ten intercollegiate athletics, and personal leadership and life skills concerning alcohol safety, healthy relationships and intimacy, diversity and inclusion, tolerance, values and character.

Iowa’s staff of 12 full-time licensed athletic trainers and six graduate assistant licensed athletic trainers provide health care services within four athletic training rooms and other ancillary facilities, involving injury rehabilitation and prevention programs among other health care services. When injuries and illness occur Iowa’s athletic trainers provide treatment and rehabilitation programs to facilitate appropriate return to participation. This new facility houses the UI Sports Medicine Center. Athletic trainers form a team with orthopaedic and primary care physicians for every Hawkeye sport. Many of the physicians are fellowship trained in their specialty area and lecture locally, nationally, and around the world. In addition, each athlete has access to orthodontists, nutritionists, psychologists, and specialty physicians at the UIHC. Priority access to see physicians and other health care professionals provides expertise for comprehensive health care that returns the student-athlete to practice and competition promptly and safely.

The Recreation Building Athletic Training Room has excellent facilities to conduct evaluations, treatments, and rehabilitation for the student-athlete.
Strength & Conditioning Philosophy The philosophy of this program consists of two components. The first is to continually develop a scientifically sound program that will maximize strength, power and explosiveness in order to allow the athlete to get the utmost out of their genetic potential, and to reduce the chance of injury. This will primarily be accomplished through the use of ground based free weight exercises and the progressive incorporation of functional movements and plyometrics. The second is to establish a culture which will develop the discipline, character and mental toughness within each student-athlete and team as a whole so that they are able to make sacrifices in their training, leave their comfort zone and develop a Championship ATTITUDE. This will encourage them to make the most out of every situation and opportunity given to them in athletics and academics, so that they might know what it is to be fully committed to something. When these two converge, they are not only able to reach their full potential; they become champions on and off the playing field.

Students are amazed not only at how much they know but at how enthused they are about sharing that knowledge and getting students excited about their subject. More than 30,000 students are enrolled at Iowa, but the UI has a student-to-faculty ratio of 15:1. Large lecture halls host a few of the most popular undergraduate courses, with several hundred students in attendance. However, most lectures are complemented by classroom discussions among smaller groups. HAWKEYE TRADITIONS
IOWA MEN’S GOLF The Hawkeye Nickname
The University of Iowa borrowed its athletic nickname from the state of Iowa many years ago. The name Hawkeye was originally the name of the hero in the fictional novel, The Last of the Mohicans, written by James Fenimore Cooper. Cooper had the Delaware Indians bestow the name on a white scout who lived with them. In 1838, 12 years after the book was published, people in the territory of Iowa acquired the nickname, chiefly through the efforts of Judge David Rorer of Burlington and James Edwards of Fort Madison. Edwards, editor of the Fort Madison Patriot, moved his paper to Burlington in 1843 and renamed it the Burlington Hawkeye. The two men continued their campaign to popularize the name, and territorial officials eventually gave it their formal approval.
Herky The Hawkeye
The Hawkeye nickname gained a tangible symbol in 1948 when a cartoon character, later to be named Herky the Hawkeye was hatched. The creator was Richard Spencer III, instructor of journalism at Iowa. The impish Hawk was an immediate hit and acquired a name through a statewide contest staged by the athletic department. John Franklin, a Belle Plaine alumnus, was the man who suggested Herky. Since his birth more than 45 years ago, Herky has symbolized Iowa athletics and epitomized university life. He even donned a military uniform during the Korean War and became the insignia of the 124th Fighter Squadron. During the mid-1950s, Herky came to life at a football game as the Iowa mascot. Since that time, Herky has been a familiar figure at Iowa athletics events.
School Colors
For 40 years Iowa was without school colors, but in 1887 a group of 50 seniors met on the steps of the Old Capitol to decide what are now the school official colors. They chose gold, the color of Iowa’s vast corn fields and black, the color of the rich soil.
School Fight Song
The Iowa Fight Song was written in 1950 by Mason City, Iowa, native Meredith Willson. Best known as the creator of Broadway’s “The Music Man,” Willson was awarded a 1963 University of Iowa Alumni Association Distinguished Service Award for “setting the spirit of Iowa to music.” The lively cheer is sung hundreds of times during Iowa athletics events the year around The word is Fight, Fight, Fight for IOWA Let every loyal Iowan sing; The word is Fight, Fight, Fight for IOWA Until the walls and rafters ring (Go Hawks!) Come on and cheer, cheer, cheer for IOWA Come on and cheer until you hear the final gun. The word is Fight, Fight, Fight for IOWA Until the game is won.
