Massimiliano Piffaretti Il Campione del Lago di Como

Massimiliano Piffaretti, comasco di nascita e americano d’adozione, è uno dei più grandi talenti mondiali di wakeboard. Lo raggiungiamo, purtroppo solo telefonicamente, a Orlando, dove vive oggi, per farci raccontare la sua avventura sulla tavola. Una storia partita sulle rive del lago di Como che l’ha portato davvero lontano. “Tutto è iniziato da bambino. I miei zii erano i ragazzi del paese un po’ innovativi: avevano tavole da snowboard, facevano windsurf, poi quando hanno preso la barca hanno iniziato anche a praticare sci nautico. Questa passione è passata ai miei cugini più grandi che l’hanno trasmessa anche a me, il più piccolo della famiglia. Il mio primo amore è stato lo snowboard, poi a seguito di un infortunio mi sono avvicinato al wakeboard. Dopo i primi risultati raggiunti, ho buttato un occhio oltre oceano per comprendere meglio la situazione americana riguardo questa disciplina e sono partito per un camp negli Stati Uniti. Qui ho avuto l’occasione di conoscere i miei idoli sportivi e ho incontrato tanti ragazzi che come me volevano intraprendere questa avventura. Da allora il wakeboard è diventato la mia vita".

Se dovessi citarne uno, quale il tuo più bel risultato raggiunto?

Ho vinto parecchie competizioni, tra cui 8 titoli europei, ma una delle vittorie più belle è quella ai mondiali in Messico anche perché c’era tutta la mia famiglia a fare il tifo per me. È stata una grande emozione.

Quali sono i tuoi prossimi obbiettivi?

Ovviamente punto a raggiungere ancora molti risultati sportivi e il mio lavoro quotidiano mira proprio a questo, ma quando terminò la carriera da atleta, mi focalizzerò su un programma indirizzato ai giovani per far conoscere sempre di più il wakeboard in Italia. Anche se vivo in America non dimentico mai di essere comasco e soprattutto laghee, e vorrei avvicinare più persone possibili a questo sport anche nel mio paese. È importante dire che è una disciplina che tutti possono praticare, ovviamente con l’allenamento e la costanza che tutti gli sport richiedono, e il lago di Como è certamente uno dei posti migliori per approcciarsi al wakebord. A questo proposito, cosa ci puoi dire della tradizione del nostro territorio?

Il movimento del wakeboard sul lago di Como è incredibile. Basti dire che la maggior parte degli atleti della nazionale italiana sono ragazzi che provengono dalla nostra scuola. Nel 2022 abbiamo vinto i campionati mondiali ai quali io purtroppo non ho potuto partecipare. Al mio rientro ci siamo aggiudicati anche i Campionati europei a squadre. Grandi risultati che ci collocano tra le nazionali più forti, insieme a Australia e America.

Insomma, preparazione fisica e atletica in America ma cuore in Italia.

Assolutamente. Io vivo negli Stati Uniti per raggiungere i miei obiettivi sportivi e per essere vicino ai brand che mi supportano.

Ma sono molto orgoglioso di essere un atleta della fortissima squadra che è quella italiana e ho un forte legame con il mio paese tanto che appena posso salgo su un aero e torno a casa.

Cosa ti manca del lago quando sei lontano?

Certamente la mia famiglia. Siamo molto legati e devo loro molto. E sicuramente il mio lago, sia per la sua bellezza, sia perché è uno scenario davvero unico per praticare il mio sport.

Quando ti rivedremo in Italia?

Sarò a Milano il 17 giugno per l’evento Red Bull Wake The City che si svolgerà sui navigli. Sarà un’occasione per mostrare a tutti il wakeboard. Vi aspetto!

Massimiliano Piffaretti, from Como by foundation and American by adoption, is one of the world's greatest wakeboard talents. We reached him, unfortunately only by phone, in Orlando, where he lives today, to have him tell us about his adventure on the board. A story that started on the shores of Lake Como that has taken him really far. "It all started as a child. My uncles were the somewhat innovative kids in the village: they had snowboards, they did windsurfing, then when they got a boat they also started water skiing. This passion was passed on to my older cousins who also passed it on to me, the youngest in the family. My first love was snowboarding, then following an injury I took up wakeboarding. After my first successes, I threw an eye overseas to better understand the American situation referring to this discipline and left for a camp in the United States. Here I had the opportunity to meet my sporting idols and met many guys who, like me, wanted to embark on this adventure. Since then wakeboarding has become my life.

When you had to name one, what is your greatest success you have achieved?

I have won several competitions, including 8 European titles, but one of the most beautiful victories is the one at the world championships in Mexico also because my whole family was there cheering for me. It was a great emotion.

What are your next goals?

Obviously I still aim to achieve many sports successes and my daily work aims to do just that, but when I finish my outstanding achievement as an athlete, I will focus on a program aimed at young people to make wakeboarding increasingly known in Italy. Although I live in America, I never forget that I am from Como and especially a laghee (from Lake Como), and I would like to bring as many people as possible closer to the sport in my country as well. It is important to say that it is a discipline that everyone can practice, obviously with the training and perseverance that all sports require, and Lake Como is certainly one of the best places to approach wakebord.

In this regard, what can you tell us about the tradition in our area?

The wakeboard movement on Lake Como is incredible. Suffice it to say that most of the athletes on the Italian national team are kids who come from our school. In 2022 we won the world championships in which I unfortunately could not participate. On my return we also won the European team leagues. Great successes that put us among the strongest national teams, along with Australia and America.

In short, physical and athletic preparation in America but heart in Italy.

Absolutely. I live in the United States to achieve my sports goals and to be close to the brands that support me. But I am very proud to be an athlete of the very strong team that is the Italian team and I have such a strong bond with my country that as soon as I can I get on an aero and come home.

What do you miss about the lake when you are away?

Certainly my family. We are very close and I owe them a lot. And definitely my lake, both because of its beauty and because it is a very unique setting to practice my sport.

When will we see you again in Italy?

I will be in Milan on June 17 for the Red Bull Wake The City event that will take place on the Navigli. It will be an opportunity to show everyone wakeboarding. I will be waiting for you!
