WELCOME The Perth 2016 Yearling sale is with us again. A time for much excitement, enthusiasm and optimism with the hopes of breeders and buyers alike riding on two days of sales. The last 12 months has seen a Lot of good constructive work by many in the industry to galvanise participants together to build a stronger more cohesive group with goals to improve breeding, ownership and racing in WA. Many initiatives have been undertaken with marketing in a more concentrated way to spread the word on the fun and excitement of racehorse ownership. Magic Millions Raceday, now to be held at the beautiful Pinjarra Racecourse, is being built as an industry day where not only Magic Millions Sales but breeders, trainers and other associated groups will have the opportunity to showcase, host and promote different sections of the WA breeding and racing industry and I am sure this day will continue to grow in years to come. Prizemoney for the Magic Millions Race Series is at an all time high and the opportunity for you to have a graduate eligible to compete is only one bid away. Westspeed race bonuses are now at a level not to be ignored and buying a Perth Yearling Sale graduate adds to the potential return in prizemoney. This year’s catalogue features progeny of 83 individual stallions that have sired the winners of such races as the Perth Cup, Winterbottom Stakes, Karrakatta Plate, Magic Millions, Melbourne Cup, Cox Plate, Queen Elizabeth Stakes, Golden Slipper, Blue Diamond. The list goes on. Many Stud tours and social activities will have been enjoyed by sale time and many lasting friendships will have been established. Our intent at Magic Millions is not only to sell exciting and successful racehorses but to provide our clients and friends with great racing experiences. We look forward to welcoming everybody to Magic Millions 2016 Perth Yearling Sale. David Houston Manager, Magic Millions Perth

MAGIC MILLIONS OVERVIEW

12

Magic Millions is a brand synonymous with horse racing excellence and champion thoroughbreds.

Millions Sale to have produced a Royal Ascot Group One winner in Scenic Blast – WA bred, owned and trained and now Hall of Famer.

It first captured the global racing industry’s imagination in 1986 when it broke from tradition and conducted a world-first incentive sale from a stunning coastal location. It lured horse buyers with huge-stakes prizemoney and a potent mix of handsome thoroughbreds, gorgeous glamour, electrifying excitement and beautiful Gold Coast beaches.

Other past graduates include Group One winners Luckygray, Moment of Change, Eagle Regiment, Playing God, Barely a Moment, Scenic Shot and Magnifisio. Crowd favourite Luckygray was purchased from the sale in 2009 for just $46,000 and earned over $2.6m in prizemoney for his owners, while the popular Peter Moody trained Moment of Change was knocked down in the ring for $50,000 and collected $1.6m for connections.

Magic Millions’ sales have grown from a catalogue of 200 in 1986 to selling as many as 6,000 lots annually, within Queensland, Western Australia, South Australia and Tasmanian sale locations. Graduates of Magic Millions Sales enjoy an enviable record of success, including a long list of champions not only within Australia, but all over the world. Magic Millions is proud to be the number one source of stakes winners in Australia over the last three racing seasons. During this period graduates of Magic Millions sales have won 49 Group One races and 501 Stakes races including the 2015 Golden Slipper winner in Vancouver and the emerging superstar Winx. To win a Queensland Oaks, Epsom Handicap and Cox Plate in the same year is nothing short of extraordinary. Vancouver’s victory in the World’s richest race for two-year-olds means that nine of the last 12 Golden Slipper winners to have been offered for sale as yearlings, were sold by Magic Millions. A record that cannot be matched. In 2014/15 over $264 million was spent at Magic Millions sales on thoroughbred horses throughout the course of the year, making Magic Millions Australia’s leading bloodstock company.

Perth The Perth Yearling Sale has a proud history of producing world class gallopers at value prices. Not only is Magic Millions Perth the source of a huge number of winners within Western Australia, it is the only Magic

The Western Australian industry is benefiting from growth within the winners sector, with an increase in Westspeed bonuses and prizemoney on offer. The marquee races in the Western Australian calendar, the Winterbottom and Railway Stakes, have received significant boosts to their purse and are now the target of interest for Eastern State horses. Magic Millions Perth Sale continues to attract not only strong local buying support, but also much investment from South Africa, New Zealand, Singapore, Queensland, New South Wales and Victoria. Perth’s close proximity to South East Asia, coupled with Western Australia’s progressive breeding attitudes and resultant racetrack achievements, make this sale one of the best opportunities for buyers in the southern hemisphere today. Perth offers the perfect combination of an unsurpassed lifestyle and strategic location in the Pacific rim. The city is renowned for its warm, sunny climate and pristine coastline. There are plenty of riverside and beachside restaurants and cafes to dine at, world-class golf courses, over 80 kilometres of white sandy beaches and a mecca of outdoor experiences to enjoy. The impact on local business and tourism is significant and caps a very important and positive outlook for WA breeding and racing.

OWNING A RACEHORSE Ever dreamed of owning a racehorse? One thing we know is that anyone that has ever owned a thoroughbred will tell you watching them race is one of the biggest thrills you will ever experience. Whilst there aren’t any guarantees in racing, being an active part of the thoroughbred racing scene is surprisingly easy and with different forms of ownership it caters to every budget. You can own a thoroughbred as an individual, in a partnership or with a group of people in a syndicate (friends/family/workmates/sporting team mates). Or you can lease a horse which has no initial outlay involved. Making an investment that suits your budget and meets your expectations is important, so here is some helpful advice to get you started on the right path.

Types of Ownerships and their descriptions: Sole Ownership: Being a sole owner means you reap all the rewards, but also carry all the costs. You have total control over the key decisions and will generally deal one on one with your trainer. Joint Ownership/Partnerships: Partnerships allow you to share in the excitement of horse ownership with work colleagues or friends and split the costs. Up to 20 people can jointly race a horse. Most trainers will have availability in horses, especially after a yearling sale, and they would welcome you to join in with many of their current or regular owners in ownership. Syndicates: If ownership sounds exciting but you’d rather reduce your cost outlay, then syndication may be the answer for you. Syndication will give you a lesser percentage share in a horse (or horses) and the selection of the horse, trainer, jockey, etc can be left up to the professionals (either the Syndicator or the Manager of the syndicate). They will supply a product disclosure statement (PDS) and the Syndicator will be licensed with ASIC (enabling them to sell shares and holding the relevant licenses and be registered in the State they operate in) – in a nutshell, not just anyone can syndicate shares in a horse. Leasing: Leasing is effectively ‘renting’ a horse from an owner/breeder for a specified period of time and obviously does not involve an upfront purchase fee. The term of the lease will see you pay all costs

associated with racing the horse along with an agreed “leasing” fee which may include a percentage of prizemoney earned. Breeders and trainers lease horses they wish to retain ownership of, often for breeding purposes while keeping a small interest in their racing careers. Being an owner in any form earns you the right to appear in the winner’s circle after your horse wins so you’re in winning photos with the Jockey, Trainer and Horse. The chance to meet up and celebrate after a win is a magical feeling, as anyone that has experienced will vouch for. The Western Australian Racehorse Owners Association (WAROA) is the official voice of racehorse owners in WA. WAROA membership provides you with many benefits and for more information visit their website www.waroa.com.au or contact waracehorseownersassoc@gmail.com.

Putting the odds in your favour Most buyers, agents, or trainers tend to buy from the annual yearling sales. A yearling, as the name suggests, is a one year old and is untried and unbroken (not yet educated to be ridden). The yearling sales is where you will most likely find your greatest chance to source that next racetrack star as all the good judges of horseflesh go about looking and comparing and sourcing the yearlings they want to invest in. This can be an exciting time for you to get involved with them and start the experience of owning a thoroughbred. Finding the trainer that is right for you will take a bit of working out. A trainer will give your horse the work that is required to get it into prime condition and spends their week giving the horse guidance and expert attention. Another alternative is to find a bloodstock agent to buy your horse for you. A bloodstock agent has the knowledge and experience to offer opinions regarding pedigree, conformation, and characteristics of a horse. You can find your local agents at www.bloodstockagents. com.au/our-members. It may be that a syndicate is your preference and then a syndicator will do all the work for you. So once you’ve made a few decisions about what type of ownership suits you, all you need to do is get involved, sit back and as the saying goes “enjoy the ride”.

WITH FIRST PRIZEMONEY OF OVER $40,000 PLUS A WESTSPEED BONUS OF $32,500, WA IS CERTAINLY A GREAT PLACE TO BE INVOLVED IN RACING.

MAGIC MILLIONS PARTNERS WITH PINJARRA Magic Millions has entered into an exciting new partnership with the historic Pinjarra Race Club which will see its Western Australian Race Series events conducted at Pinjarra Park in 2016 and beyond. World renowned for setting the benchmark for innovative sales restricted racing, Magic Millions have programmed its WA 2YO Classic and 3YO Trophy races which both hold Restricted Listed status, on Sunday 7 February 2016 at Pinjarra Park.

“Enhancing the racing program in regional areas is a key strategy of RWWA and the Magic Millions Raceday at Pinjarra Park provides a fantastic opportunity to present our premium product to residents in the wider Peel region,” said David Hunter, RWWA’s Manager of Thoroughbred Racing. As a consequence of the venue change the Magic Millions WA 2YO Classic will now be run over 1200m (previously 1100m). The distance of the Magic Millions WA 3YO Trophy will remain at 1200m in 2016 but will be reviewed for future years.

The annual WA Race Series events complement the Magic Millions Perth Yearling Sale and provide rewarding returns to owners and trainers who purchase and sell yearlings at Magic Millions sales. As well as the new partnership, there will be a significant increase to prizemoney for the Magic Millions WA 3YO Trophy, which will offer a purse of $150,000, up 50% on current levels. “Magic Millions wholeheartedly supports the growth of the thoroughbred breeding and racing industry in WA,” said Magic Millions Managing Director Vin Cox. “To have $400,000 in prizemoney on offer over two Magic Millions races conducted at a quality racetrack near the prominent training locations of Lark Hill and Bunbury and be within easy access from Ascot, is a win for all local industry participants,” Cox added. Racing first began in 1891 at Pinjarra Park. Now recognised as one of the premier racecourses in Western Australia, the Race Club is located in the Peel region just 85km south-west of Perth and is situated in proximity to a number of leading breeders in the Serpentine area. Pinjarra Race Club Chairman Phil Ibbotson has embraced the opportunity of the new partnership with Magic Millions. “This is a huge opportunity for our Club going forward. We are very excited to be working with Magic Millions to build the raceday as a vehicle to showcase the entire Western Australian thoroughbred industry,” said Phil Ibbotson. Magic Millions and Pinjarra Race Club will work in conjunction with Racing & Wagering Western Australia (RWWA) with a view to developing the raceday as a key feature racemeeting each season. It’s a concept endorsed by RWWA and a strategy which Magic Millions has proven expertise having worked successfully with provincial clubs in other states.

THE INSIDERS WORD ON THE PERTH YEARLING SALE... OH, AND DAVID HOUSTON It seems you can train multiple Group 1 winners, travel the globe, you can even meet the Queen, but oddly it appears that the one thing that a number of prominent racing and breeding identities in Western Australia want is David Houston’s job. Let’s meet some of these racing identities and ask them a few questions about their experience of Magic Millions as a vendor or trainer and see what the Perth Yearling Sale means to them.

What is the oddest question you’ve heard from a client regarding a horse following a race?

Trevor Andrews, TMA Racing

How do you expect a horse to win when his tail is so long. What is the strangest thing you’ve seen a potential purchaser do (or ask) when inspecting or buying a horse at a sale? Will he be racing this month? Can you identify something special about the Magic Millions Perth sale? Best value sale in Australia average yearling price well below Saturday stake money including bonuses If you could be anyone else in the industry for a day, who would it be and why? David Houston or Grant Burns (both living the dream)

Dan Morton

Snapshot: A trainer for some 25 years Trevor and his wife Joanne have produced a series of Group 1 winners including Gr 1 Railway Stakes hero Luckygray. The stable aslo has the distinction of having produced 3 Magic Millions 2YO Classic winners including 2015 successor Lucky Street. What is the oddest question you’ve heard from a client regarding a horse following a race? On this occasion my client asked me what chance I gave his horse in the race. I said I gave it no hope and to keep his hard earned in his pocket. The horse ran as thought - unplaced. The client then went on to tell me that if I was more confident in his horse’s ability the horse could have won.

What is the strangest thing you’ve seen a potential purchaser do (or ask) when inspecting or buying a horse at a sale?

possibly have the best job in the country filled with gourmet lunches and “scenic boat cruises”

One year at the Gold Coast I saw a group of overseas buyers inspecting a yearling then four of the group walked over to the horse and each of them squatted down inspecting each leg with a fine tooth comb. I was amazed they didn’t get their heads kicked off.

Favourite horse you’ve been involved with?

Perth is a Beautiful city with some of the best beaches in the world & Kings Park is very special at night.

A colt we sold in 2011 now named Jespatim. First runner by our resident stallion Patronize. Ran 5th in his first race start in the 2yo Perth Magic Millions then won by 4 lengths second up. He was the most easy going yearling and acted like a nanny for all the other yearlings. Now he has won over $185,000

Best business decision you’ve made at a Magic Millions sale? Purchasing Lucky Street Favourite horse you’ve been involved with?

Buying some select broodmares such as Fauchon (full sister to G1 winner Meurice) on the Gold Coast - we now have a lovely colt by Pierro from her.

I don’t like to single out one. All these have been special to my wife Joanne and I: Heroicity, Natasha, Modem, Luckygray (13 time winner of $2,677,525 in prizemoney),The Right Money, Lucky Street (6 wins for $782,850 as at 21 Jan 2016. Lucky Street is favourite for this Saturday’s Miss Andretti Stakes and will then be aimed for the $150,000 Magic Millions WA 3yo Trophy (1200m) at Pinjarra on February 7).

Dan Morton - Morton Racing

One for the blackbook: Trevor also trains The River who became the first winning graduate from the Western Breeders Alliance at Ascot on January 9 (and at $115,000 the most expensive lot among the new coalition’s inaugural consignment of 15 yearlings at the Perth Magic Millions Sale). The colt is a live chance for the $250,000 Magic Millions WA 2YO Classic in February. The Western Breeders Alliance comprises Darling View Thoroughbreds, Westbury Park and Einoncliff Park. Andrews bought The River for the same connections as Lucky Street who won the Magic Millions 2YO Classic and G2 Karrakatta Plate last year.

Scenic Shot won the Gr 1 Doomben Cup in 2009 and 2010, and the Gr 1 Mackinnon Stakes at Flemington the same year, with numerous Group wins in Queensland during his career. Scenic Blast reached international renown when he won the Gr 1 King’s Stand Stakes at Royal Ascot in 2009, as well as the Gr 1 Lightning Stakes and Newmarket Handicap the same year at Flemington. The horse was also runner-up in the 2007 Caulfield Guineas and the 2012 BTC Cup at Doomben.

Snapshot: A former jockey, Dan commenced training in 2003 and now has one of the leading stables in WA. A highly regarded trainer, Dan has pulled off many big wins in some of the greatest races both in Australia and overseas.

What is the oddest question you’ve heard from a client regarding a horse following a race? Oh dear, how do I even narrow that down?

Brett Atwell - Stud Master, Darling View Thoroughbreds Snapshot: Darling View Thoroughbreds stand Group 1 Caulfield Guineas winner Econsul and Patronize who is the ¾ brother to Champion Australian Sire Exceed and Excel. Patronize is the sire (amongst others) of current 3YO sprinter Mystic Maid who secured black type in last year’s Placid Ark Stakes L. What is the strangest thing you’ve seen a potential purchaser do (or ask) when inspecting a horse at a sale? I had a buyer ask me once if one of my colts had a big appendage. Apparently to stand at stud they need to be a certain size.

Can you identify something special about the Magic Millions Perth sale? I’ve always said that it’s the best value sale in Australia. The sale average has always been around or less than what we race for in Perth and no other sale in Australia can do that. What is the strangest thing you’ve seen a potential purchaser do (or ask) when inspecting or buying a horse at a sale? I’ve had people ask if they can ride them (at the sale). I’ve always told them that they might be able to ... but I certainly couldn’t! If you could be anyone else in the industry for a day, who would it be?

Can you identify something special about the Magic Millions Perth sale?

Well that’s easy - David Houston.

The facilities?! (I’m joking!). I do like the relaxed atmosphere of the Perth sales.

Best business decision you’ve made at a MM sale?

Favourite horse you’ve been involved with?

Mr Bob Peters, I’d love to see how he works. Or David Houston – he may

SO WHO IS DAVID HOUSTON? David bred his first horse at 13 years of age so it’s safe to say he has a lifetime of experience in the equine industry. As MM’s Perth Manager since mid 2012, David is not going to deny that the Western Australian economy hasn’t had its issues in recent years but local racing continues to positively line the pockets of many. “The prizemoney is good locally and Western Australia is isolated so we are not bombarded by other states which allows local owners to have a good go at the prizemoney pool on offer,” Houston says. He is bullish about the catalogue for the upcoming yearling sale stating that 84 different stallions are represented including sires of the winners of the Perth Cup, Karakatta Plate, Magic Millions races, and WA Guineas. “Street Cry, Snitzel, High Chaparral, Stratum, Sebring, Not A Single Doubt, I Am Invincible etc are all represented so there are a good array of stock for people from out of the State as well including 100 horses who are BOBS and VOBIS nominated.” With the strength of the Magic Millions Gold Coast Sale intimating that the Southern Hemisphere yearling prices may be set for record gains in 2016, the Perth Sale presents a serious opportunity for Australian and international buyers looking to buy a quality yearling without paying overs. In a city well known for its breathtaking sunsets and decadent city views, the man with the ‘most wanted job’ is asked how best to enjoy a couple of Perth’s finer attractions whilst locals and visitors alike are in Perth for Sale Week. The Swan River? “With chardonnay, cheese and biscuits, friends, and a boat. Definitely a post work activity.” Best restaurants? “Well I can’t cook so I’ve had to learn the name of every restaurant in Perth starting at McDonalds. I’d recommend Cocos in South Perth or Bistro Guillaume at Crown Perth if you want somewhere special.” (I knew there was a reason they wanted his job!)
