Destinations of balance..

Yin-Yang Breaks! By Sue Ryan

INTERNATIONAL

I am not going to define Yin-Yang holidays or breaks merely according to ideas of femininity and masculinity; because some women may prefer a holiday traditionally considered masculine or with Yang attributes (for example attending a major sporting event or trekking in the mountains), while some men may prefer what would be marketed as a feminine or Yin escape (spa time or a shopping trip). After all, it’s not all about husband & wife or male & female holiday partnerships. You may be planning a trip with friends of your own sex, or with family. Or even going on your own, but your personality draws you in different directions. So instead of labeling holidays into stereotypical masculine-feminine divisions, these suggestions simply provide contrasting options. They give you some chance of satisfying everyone’s longings and avoiding a holiday where someone feels their desires have taken second place to the preferences of the other/s. The key is thinking of yin & yang as complementary, rather than as opposing forces. Whether your holiday dreams feature relaxation or strenuous activity, indoor or outdoor attractions, culture or shopping; these suggestions are sure to help you find a pleasing balance.

Maldives

Dual Destination

Dubai

A recent trend in holiday

planning is the dual-destination escape. This is a solution for people who want different experiences and who don’t mind an extra flight or two to include a complete change of scene in their break. An example is seven nights in the Maldives and three in Dubai. Both destinations offer luxury in different forms. The Maldives is known for its ultra white beaches, clear blue waters, and romantic thatched villas. These tropical islands offer pure relaxation. The high-rise glamour of Dubai is a complete contrast to lazing all day on those beaches, with its designer shopping and countless dining options.

At the five-star Medhufushi Island Resort, on the brilliant indigo lagoon of Meemu Atoll, the beach villas have been crafted in traditional Maldivian style and are right on the beach with a traditional swing seat and four-poster bed. The all-inclusive resort features two intimate restaurants, a lagoon bar and gourmet private dining menus, as well as a PADI dive center and many watersports.

In Dubai, the Asian Hotel will continue the deluxe treatment and give you easy access to exploring the city. The adventurous person will want to visit the souks, ascend the tallest building in the world; and if the Maldives did not exhaust your beach cravings, there are more here to enjoy. The hotel has five Asian themed restaurants and an outdoor heated pool; so you need not even step outside, if you would rather relax than see the city. http://www.secretescapes.com/

There is one interest sure to be shared by both yin and yang – FOOD. Dubai has an outstanding mix of tastes to surprise you; and Frying Pan Adventures tours will take you to places that you may never discover, even if you lived in Dubai for years. These are intimate tours, but if one of you loathes the idea of a sort of guided tour, they craft a self-guided itinerary with your own chauffered car. http://www.fryingpanadventures.com/

Movies and Whales Sydney, Australia

Didn’t get your invitation to the Oscars?

Movie addicts can be assured of a great night out at one of Australia’s many outdoor or “Moonlight” cinemas. Here, people gather with friends to enjoy classic films; with food and drink in the style of a sophisticated picnic, and some of the best backdrops you could ever imagine. The most recent addition to outdoor cinemas is the St George, with its prime position overlooking Sydney’s harbor.

http://www.stgeorgeopenair.com.au

If your partner is not into movies; the Opera House is a short distance away, offering not just Opera but many other live performances. Choose a hotel on the North Shore of the harbor and enjoy a ferry ride or water taxi to and from your base. During the day; an urban-sightseer partner will have plenty of ground to discover the city’s historic Rocks area. And the adventurous may want to try a Bridge climb to get a different view of the harbor http://www.bridgeclimb.com

Or go whale watching!! Yes, Sydney has whales regularly visiting. http://www.whalewatchingsydney.net/

Northern Lights and Historic Centre Reykjavik - Iceland

Fascinated by natural phenomena and

want to experience something special, but you have only a brief holiday? In just four days; you can explore the mysterious landscapes of Iceland, with Reykjavik as your base. Take a Northern Lights tour in search of the kaleidoscopic Aurora Borealis, and include a trip to the magnificent scenery of the Golden Circle and the healing spring waters of the Blue Lagoon. If the chance to dive into another culture does more to light up your daydreams than skywatching, the city of Reykjavik has more for you. Centerhotel Arnarhvoll sits on the north waterfront of the Old Town, an ideal central location with scenic views of Faxafloi Bay. The hotel’s Sky Bar also offers views of the city and Esja Mountain. For shoppers, nearby is Laugavegur, the city’s main strip. Culinary enthusiasts and those who

prefer urban nightlife will find many stylish cafés, bars and restaurants throughout the city. The hotel is perfectly placed for exploring the historic city-centre including Culture House, which exhibits one of the important medieval manuscript collections in the world. The Kvosin neighbourhood is the oldest area of the city and offers the 19th century Parliament House, City Hall and the beautiful Cathedral. The Harpa is an impressive concert hall and the home to the Iceland Symphony Orchestra and the Icelandic Opera. http://www.secretescapes.com/

Landscape Lusciousness and Wellness

Italy

Italy for many people means the chance to explore Rome, Milan, Venice, Florence and all that they offer for lovers of art and culture. But Italy also offers splendid landscapes for those whose ideal holiday could be spent simply contemplating beautiful views. Does a five-star hilltop getaway on an island, with incredible views of land and sea sound good? Then Albergo San Montano Resort and Spa is your solution. With 360° views across Ischia and the Amalfi Coast, you can dine on the terrace with Naples, Mount Vesuvius, and the Sorrentine peninsula in the background. The hotel’s own landscaping includes pools and falls, you can enjoy the scents of the aromatherapy path, and menus include products from the hotel’s own vegetable garden. The rooms and suites are beautifully decorated and some have a balcony with sea views. You can book trips to the centre of Lacco Ameno, around the island or cross to the famous Amalfi coast. Your travel companion is unmoved or easily tires of scenery, and wellness breaks are what appeal to them? This hotel wellness centre offers indulgences such as mud bath, hydrotherapy, and other beauty treatments. Not to mention two outdoor pools (one thermal pool and the other a sea-water pool) and a natural sauna. They don’t need to cross to the mainland for beach life, as the hotel has access to San Montano beach. You already have one of the most beautiful beaches on the island on your doorstep. http://www.sanmontano.com/eng/

Egypt

History and Rising Above It All Balloon

Luxor

Everyone knows Luxor has an extraordinary concentration of Ancient Egyptian monuments including temples, the tombs of the West Bank, and the artifacts. If you have any interest in this country’s history, a tour guided by a qualified Egyptologist is essential to really reveal the history and to introduce you to contemporary Luxor life without the tourist trade hassles of negotiating this yourself. Avoid the packaged tours and have yours custom-designed, so you can see Luxor as it should be seen. History fascinates many of us, but we have to accept that for some people it is just a yawn. How to keep them happy? Make them feel like king or queen of the world on a hot-air balloon flight over the West Bank. Amid the excitement of the flight, you will have extraordinary views of the temples and truly appreciate Luxor’s position on the Nile, as you rise into the sky with the sun. www.RealEgypt.Com

Dugong & Turtle Spotting and Specialty Dive Course

Marsa Alam

One of you is an experienced scuba

diver but the other is not? The Red Sea offers so much for snorkelers as well as for experienced divers. If you have never snorkeled, it is easy to learn. A few minutes practice with mask and snorkel will have you astounded that you have never tried this before. It opens up an amazing world of marine beauty to you. Emperor Divers has centers around the Red Sea that offer a range of excursions for non-divers including the chance in Marsa Alam to see the fascinating dugong. Two recommended trips go to Marsa Mubarak, a protected bay where there is sea grass for turtles and dugong to feed on. The PADI Dugong Appreciation Specialty is a great way for certified divers to learn more about local dugong and how to interact with other large marine life. The divers learn how to enter the water

considerately, search for the dugong in a structured way, and how to spend as much time as possible with the dugong underwater to be able to take specific details that may help in identifying it and its behavioral patterns. This is a one-day course, with two dives and a small knowledge section on dugongs in general and specific to local dugong. The non-diver can take a snorkeling trip to this area. You will go looking for green sea turtles and if you’re lucky the dugong may also make an appearance. There are two snorkeling sessions; one in the morning that searches for turtles, then the weather and ability (and rumors of whether the dugong is around) will determine where the second session takes place after lunch. Marsa Alam is also home to many dolphins. And the diversity of other marine life means you will never be disappointed on a water excursion here, as there is always something new to see. http://www.emperordivers.com/

Desert and Sea Dahab Sharm el Sheikh is the favored beach

fun destination for many, but Dahab is only an hour away from Sharm and a very different experience. Both sit beside the Red Sea with beautiful beaches and excellent conditions for watersports. Both have the Sinai Mountains as a backdrop, catching your eye whenever your gaze turns away from the water. But Dahab life is more laid back. It is easy to laze away days in the waterside cafes or join a yoga or meditation class, while those chasing action are spoilt for choice with strong winds (for the wind and kite surfers), dives (directly off the shore or nearby at the famous Blue Hole), and quad bike rides in the desert. The secret to finding a balance in Dahab often comes down to your choice of accommodation and what it offers. Red C Villas are distinctive as they give you

the choice of intimate apartments and enough space for a family. The owners have many years experience of Dahab and can provide any activity or service: diving to desert excursion, a BBQ by the pool or a tour of the town. And you can take their advice on the Sinai experiences outside your comfort zone and see the marine wonders and desert highlights. The Villas are set slightly apart from the bustle of the main shopping and restaurant streets, but close enough that you can dip in and out of Dahab life. They have been meticulously designed and the home comforts mean you have all you need or can have it supplied right there. Each apartment includes as decoration one of the owner’s collection of handmade Bedouin face-veils, which brings a little desert culture and feel like you’re home away from home.

Resolving The only constant about human interactions is conflict. Disagreements are everywhere. It is something that every human is born with and there is nothing there to stop it. Clashes are inevitable, nothing will ever stop them happening. However, resolving/solving conflicts isn’t all impossible. Conflicts touch any relationship. They can cause resentment, hostility and might end all the relationship up. Good news is: if it’s handled right, such struggle can be productive -leading to deeper understanding, mutual respect and intimacy. It’s not about how many fights, but how they are being handled. The better we understand that, the better we’re prepared to deal with life as whole. We seldom create conflict intentionally, and the lack of it doesn’t mean a healthy relationship. On the contrary, a relationship with frequent conflicts -that are dealt with maturely- is much healthier than one with concealed dissatisfaction and bitterness.

32

Conflicts

How can differences bring us closer? By Marwa Hasan

Common mistakes in reacting to conflicts Flight: Avoiding or denying the existence of a clash. One or

both members of the relationship flee from dealing with the dilemma by distracting themselves with something else. People can avoid conflict, but dodging it doesn’t mean the problems will magically disappear; rather it causes tension and piles resentment up.

Overacting: Getting mad and blaming the other person. That occurs when someone equates conflict to rage or consider it a power game. This kind of people welcomes clashes because they allow their competitive impulses to emerge. But they fail to understand that this wouldn’t rest the case since the “loser” will continue to hold grudges. Submitting: Some people avoid potentially hurtful encounters by giving up on what they want. Their strategy is to end the disagreement with compromising, to get it over with. Freezing: Becoming immobilized with tension. They are aware of the problem but not doing anything about it. Just functioning in robot mode.

Joie De Vivre

Common Conflict Causes Conflict doesn’t necessarily involve fighting and quarrels. It happens due to difference of opinions between two people -or more- who share a common bond -typically family members, spouses and friends. Clashes can erupt when two people have different religious, political or moral ideals, or different belief systems. It can also arise due to miscommunication -when people are having difficulty expressing themselves and/or understanding the other person’s point of view.

•Unresolved feelings

Sometimes conflict is coming from piling up negative feelings (such as anger, resentment or jealousy) but instead of expressing what you really feel, you pick at the little things. Of course it’s not about not doing the dishes or not calling back, they’re triggers but they’re not the real reasons why you’d snap. Same with stress, when you’re stressed out, it’s easy to get overwhelmed by feelings that you can’t let out. So you vent that stress where you easily can, on the people closest to you. Resolution: Notice your pattern. Dig deeper for the root of your distress. What’s really bothering you? Do you feel un-respected? Do some actions seem to confirm your fear that you are somehow unworthy? Are you holding a grudge over something that happened way way ago? Are you having problems at work? What’s really making you feel edgy? Ask yourself if there’s a bigger conversation you need to have; something you need to say that you didn’t, or perhaps it’s something you need to work out in your own head.

•Data conflict

The most common conflict we’re having in Egypt nowadays! Media says something, some ‘witness’ claims another, and you see a third version of it. Each one sees a different side of the story, and all are biased. So the conflict begins. It’s more about the dispute between factual information and a person’s opinion. It can also be based on mis-information and mis-communication between parties. Whose opinion is right? Whose information is more accurate? We’ll never know. Resolution: It can occur through the agreement on a set of facts, and to come to an understanding that there is so many faces to every story.

•Expectations

You expect your friends to throw you a surprise birthday party; and when they don’t, you get resentful of them. You expect a certain reaction from your partner; and when you don’t get it, you end up so disappointed? Resolution: It’s all in your head! Did it occur to you that maybe you’re fixated on those unrealistic expectations? Maybe what’s actually going on is way better than those versions in your head. Did you ever consider it that maybe you, yourself, are disappointing someone by not being up to whatever they have in mind?

•Conflict of Interest

It’s when someone has no option but to sacrifice the needs of others in order to have their goals reached. Such conflicts are centered on resources such as money and time, or on psychological issues related to needs and/or desires. Resolution: It happens mostly through compromise. One party agrees to give up something they want in exchange for another. And instead of compromising from one side, you manage to find a way to make things work together. The best of both lands!

•Being a drama queen

Some people get their buzz from drama. They’re looking for attention and/or adventure. They hunt for problems when there’s nothing there to fight about. Even when someone tries to communicate and work out any mix-ups, they indulge in a perpetual reluctance. Resolution: Newsflash: the world doesn’t revolve around you! Drama doesn’t create passion. It doesn’t make you valuable. It’s a flawed mean of attention; because in time everyone realizes it and they’ll certainly clear out of your relationship.

How to resolve general conflicts Ideally, conflict resolution is a collaborative problem-solving technique. Both parties must view their conflict as a problem to be solved mutually, so that both parties end up satisfied. Always remember, it takes two to tango .

Learn to pick your battles

This requires a little insight as to what’s a real problem and what’s just small stuff. That also needs some subtlety and balance, because choosing to sweat all that small stuff is a sign of a bigger problem -that the relationship may just not be right. Sometimes a clash now is better than a life time of confusion and unilateral compromises.

Communicate

It’s not easy for anyone to face their demons. But it shows how much you care and also tears up all barriers and brings people together, way stronger. •Stop guessing what might be causing the conflict, cut to the chase and ask about their side. In your turn; lay your concerns, goals, point of view, expectations and everything you want to talk about out in the open. •Shed that ego at the door and don’t let your emotions speak for you. If you hurt them, even unintentionally, do your part and apologize. •Appreciate and praise the other party when doing the talk. Remind them why it means a lot to you to get it all solved out. Communication is always the best conflict-resolution policy.

Tolerance

Differences are reality in this life. People are born into different cultures, colors, and backgrounds. When it comes to values or morals, the best way to tackle those conflicts is to develop empathy and tolerance, and to realize that it’s ok to disagree. Cultivate the idea that diverse life experiences create colors and contrast in life. This change of mindset helps fizzle the tension out and will get you one step closer towards peace.

It’s not a battlefield

Take a chill pill instead of indulging into such I’m-right-you’rewrong battle. You should learn to develop shared understanding that sets a basis for win-win solutions. Try to handle conflicts sooner rather than later. Conflicts happen not because of something that was said, but out of something that wasn’t! Everyone’s waiting for the other to admit they’re wrong, and it gets vicious after the conflict is being cooked for a while. So cut the waiting line before it gets to a dangerous point. And remember, sometimes we have to “lose” in order to ultimately “win.”

It’s not easy to resolve conflicts and restore peace, but it pays off. As it eventually helps create a healthy, nontoxic environment for you to live in. So stay cool, think outside your bubble and always give people the benefit of the doubt. With this insight, your life quality is bound to increase tenfold.

Black & white makeup Dos & Don’ts

BLACK EYELINER and EYESHADOW Do Do Do -Draw thin eyeliner on the lower lash line of the eye to have a defined shape in a natural way. -Use the gel or liquid black eyeliner to create “cat eye” effect for a simple night makeup. -If you have big eyes, always fill the waterline with black eyeliner to decrease the shape of the eye. -For a clean and long lasting eye makeup, always use an eyeshadow primer before using a black eyeshadow. -If you have CLOSE-SET EYES, always use the black eyeliner or eyeshadow starting from the middle to the outer corner of the eye “Main correction should be to offer the eyes more space in between”.

DON’T DON’T

-If you have PROTRUDING EYES, use a matte black eyeshadow on the entire lid. Apply black eyeliner inside the waterline “Main focus in correction should be on giving the eye a deeper look and correct the protrusion of the eye”. -For glamorous black smoky eyes, always use a shimmery eyeshadow. - For discreet sharp eyes, take a small brush dipped in gel liner or liquid eyeliner with a superfine tip, and dot liner in between your lashes above your waterline for subtle definition. -For long lasting waterline eyeliner, apply a black eyeshadow right after applying your black pencil.

DON’T

-Don’t wear black eyeshadow when applying your day makeup. -If you have small eyes, avoid applying black eyeliner in your waterline. -Avoid smudged eye makeup look, if you have oily lids.

-Avoid dramatic black eye makeup on your wedding day.

WHITE EYELINER and EYESHADOW Do Do Do -Use a matte white eyeshadow on the brow bone area to define your eyebrows. -For the big eyes look, use white eyeliner in your waterline. -For a well-rested look, use a shimmery white eyeshadow on the inner corner of the eyes. -Use a shimmery white eyeshadow for the DEEP-SET EYES as deep set eyes tend to be small in size and your main aim in the correction should be making the eyes appear bigger in size and pull them forward to appear slightly protruding. -When applying white eyeshadow on the entire lid, mix it with a warm color (light

DON’T DON’T

brown, pink) to create a contrast. -Use the matte eyeshadow as a base for your eye makeup as it creates a blending base and smooth application for your eye color. -For a soft shimmery glow; Apply an iridescent white eyeshadow on the entire upper lid from the lash line to the brow, then apply the eyeshadow color of your choice over the top. -Create an icy evening look applying white eyeshadow on the entire lid along the lower lash line with a lot of mascara on your lashes. Defined brows are a must for this look!

DON’T

-Use white eyeliner in your waterline, if you have protruding eyes. -Apply white eyeshadow on the lid, if you have protruding eyes. -Apply shimmery white eyeshadow for a day makeup look.

Feng Shui A Place of Harmony By Rania Salem

Do you feel that the energy in your home isn’t positive? Your office isn’t the right place to progress your work… Chances are their Yin-Yang components are out of balance. Ask yourself, do you feel that your bedroom is a peaceful sanctuary, your favorite spot of retreat and an irresistible love nest… If not, then you need to change your bedroom’s Feng Shui. The same goes for any other place in your home. There are simple ways to add the attributes of Yin and Yang to your home. A simple rearrangement of furniture and a little tweak in the color theme will transform your dull gloomy house into a harmonized balanced paradise. Yin-Yang is the foundation of the Ancient Practice of Feng Shui (pronounced Fung-shway) which means “wind and water”. Feng Shui is an ancient Chinese art of space arrangement, object placement and decoration. In Feng Shui practice, everything is categorized into Yin or Yang. It has to do with the recognition that the universe is made up of opposite forces of energy, balanced like the polar sides of a magnet, and innately attracted to each other. The concept of Yin refers to the feminine principle, which is passive, dark and yielding while Yang refers to the male

Yin and Yang: Your Key to a Balanced Home principle, which is bright, active and extroverted. Your home needs balanced Feng Shui energy to support your wellbeing, and it is important to understand the application of the Yin-Yang theory on practical levels… -In design history, Yin qualities were incorporated in the Victorian era, Louis IV, Louis VI and the Baroque period. -In physical environments, Yin objects are reflected in circular shapes, dark muted color shades, upholstered furniture of soft chenille, velvet and corduroy fabric, carpeting, area rugs and small detailed prints. -In building materials, brick and stucco are considered Yin materials. -In architecture, the Bauhaus period in Germany (1919-1933) was the beginning of the utilization of Yang components: Slick glass, mirrors, metals, plastics, high vast ceilings, bright angular spaces, bold stripes, and geometric patterns, hard angular furniture with no detailing, hard wooden floors, cement and tiles… All reflect the materials and features of the Yang design.

Feng Shui your Home Feng Shui suggests that we are ancient creatures who naturally seek balance. If our living spaces are not balanced, our lives will be as well out of balance. By learning to work with the Yin-Yang components in our homes, we will be able to create supportive spaces that will automatically re-create the harmony our lives are missing. To balance your home, first you want to determine the use of space, and then incorporate the Yin-Yang qualities appropriate for this space. Passive spaces should incorporate more Yin features and active spaces more Yang features. The key, however, is to make sure you always have both features, not an over abundance of either. Yin-Yang energies cannot exist in isolation; they define each other, as each is the condition for the other’s existence. Therefore, a good Feng Shui home must have a harmonious rhythm of both energies.

Yin is the stillness and mystery of the night. Yang is the fiery essence of the mid-day sun.

Yin Energy in Your Home Yin energy exists in calm colors, soft music, soothing water sounds and relaxing art images. Yin energy should be existent in any place that supports rest, relaxation and rejuvenation such as bedrooms, dining rooms, and bathrooms. These rooms need comfy furniture, muted colors and lighting, plush fabrics and more detailed patterns and accessories to absorb the warm energy. It is crucial to get rid of all the dominant Yang elements, like TV, exercise equipment, or office items. Having a bright, ultra-modern bedroom with high ceilings and slick fabrics will not serve the occupants and eventually will lead to sleeping disorders. While the Yin energy needs to be the predominant energy in these rooms (think relaxation, cocooning, sensuality, sleep); you also need a slight presence of Yang (think red candles, a light accent color to breach the deep colors, etc…)

When your space needs Yin energy! If you want to create more relaxed and focused spaces, add: -Curves and flowing shapes. -Dark colors. -Upholstered furniture. -Shades on the windows. -Rugs on the floor.

When you space needs Yang energy! If you want to create a space full of energy and excitement, add: -Straight lines and angular shapes. -Light and bright colors. -Furniture made from wood, glass or stone. -Track lighting and bright lights. -Wood blinds. -Floors made from wood, marble or tile. -Rooms with few pieces of furniture.

In Feng Shui, having a balance of both Yin and Yang in your home and office will create the positive energy you need to attract wealth, harmony, and love into your life.

Yang Energy in your Home The most vibrant and active spaces in any home are considered Yang: i.e. children’s playroom, kitchen, gym, office, laundry room, family room (depending on the use), hallway and garage. These spaces should incorporate more Yang components with more angular shaped furniture and less detailed accessories. When you use modern Yang qualities, choose furniture with more rounded edges. Sharp-edged furniture is considered weapon-like in Feng Shui. Choose vibrant colors, lively music, and a variety of Feng Shui decor items to create an active quality of energy (family photos, books, games... etc.) Our homes always need to be ‘people friendly’ no matter what décor you prefer. Even though Yin is not the dominant element here, but try to introduce deep colors, relaxed and comfortable seating, as well as some images with soothing Yin energy to achieve the needed amount of balance.

Feng Shui and Colors In Feng Shui, each color brings a different quality of energy. Mastering Feng Shui color use will give you powerful Feng Shui tools to create a better environment. Naturally Feng Shui colors are categorized as Yin and Yang. Blended and introduced to the appropriate areas in any room, Yin-Yang colors may balance emotions, material pursuits and spiritual needs.

-Yin colors: Black, Pink,

Green, Blue, Gray. -Yang Colors: White, Red, Yellow, Gold, Orange.

The Different Shades of Feng Shui -Green and Blue are said to be the colors that can enhance your health. Feng Shui practitioners believe that the color green symbolizes longevity, growth and rebirth. To paint your bedroom walls green or to use it as the theme color is like bringing nature into your room. It can revitalize those who have been ill and be the soul tonic to those who are already healthy. On the other hand, the color blue represents calmness, flexibility and inner peace. Decorating your bedroom with the color blue is believed to be good for relaxation and meditation‌ And when your mind is more refreshed, your body will do the same. Red, Purple and Gold, according to Feng Shui masters, can induce good luck and prosperity. They are Yang colors; therefore they should be used more in offices or study rooms, for they bring motivation and excitement.

44

Mag Décor Black, white and Gray are the colors to boost your career. Black symbolizes good income and insightfulness. White represents creativity and mental strength, while gray creates the sense of selfempowerment and confidence. Keep in mind that even though black is a Yin color; it absorbs the negative energy in the occupied space. -The best colors for enhancing your love life are Pink, Yellow and Orange. Pink is believed to create positive energy for couples in terms of sexual fulfillment and selfless love. Yellow can induce acceptance and tolerance, but using too much yellow to decorate the bedroom may create anxiety. Orange, the vibrant blend of red and yellow can increase passion and understanding between partners.

Make sure to add plants and elements of nature in your decoration… Ultra modern homes devoid of nature will never feel truly like HOME.

Feng Shui Tips for a Positive Atmosphere The techniques of Feng Shui help energy flow through the place; to create a balanced, happy lifestyle. As there are too many elements that can increase the negative energy, there are more cures to fix the room’s gloomy mood…

Sounds

Sounds increase the energy flow in any space, either by using art or wind chimes. If you decide to use art to enhance the sound in a room, use a piece with a musical feeling. As to wind chimes, they should be hung with a red string and should have five chimes, one for each of the five natural elements (earth, metal, wood, fire and water).

Living Things

Having living organisms inside your home will maintain a positive mood. Pets are the simple answer, as they bring energy to any room. If you don’t want the responsibility of a dog or a cat, even a fish aquarium will help offset the bad mood. However, if that is

still too much responsibility, use plants to revive the energy. Use them in rooms with fewer activities, like a guest room.

Mirrors

Mirrors can welcome in light and energy that will offset bad energy. For example, if a room does not have a lot of light, hang a mirror near the window so the light can pass through the room rather than being blocked by the walls. Also, make sure the windows are clean; if they are dirty or shaded, this will affect the amount of light entering this room.

Although there will always be one quality of energy that is stronger(depending on the use of the space), creating a space that reflects the Feng Shui balance is very important. Having a harmonious balance of both Feng Shui forces is the only way to create the quality of energy needed for a healthy and fulfilling life.

Yin Yang your Home

Balance By Haya Arafa

Remember your first cycling lesson? You learned that balance is vital to keep moving straight forward! Yes, balance is indispensable to our lives! And of course, as you learned in that earlier piece in our Décor section, Yin and Yang are all about balance! Achieving yin-yang balance helps us stay healthy, happy, strong and satisfied. The outer circle of the Yin-Yang symbol represents “everything”, while the black and white shapes in the circle represent the interaction of these opposite energies that creates the full circle.

No doubt most of us crave little peace in our homes and business places, so let me give you some tips to what you can do to keep y your home balanced.

Visual Balance Symmetrical Designs : Symmetry brings the feelings of stability, dignity and calmness. Achieving it is easy. It’s all about mirroring things. There’s also a kind of balance that can be created visually, and it doesn’t have to be symmetric. It’s more about the placement of furniture in the room. You have to take in consideration the visual weight of the pieces you own. Individual large pieces should be placed first, then arrange the smaller items to fill in the room. Each piece of furniture should be selected and placed to create visual balance with the others. Also it’s important to create a focal point that can attract the attention of anyone getting inside the room. A fireplace or a bookshelf can be perfect for this job. Once you decide upon such focal point, you can start placing your furniture easily.

Mag Décor

Light Balance If you have a very sunny/bright space and there’s no place to hide from the crushing light, or if your scope is very dramatic and dark; both cases can be resolved. ** For too bright rooms, use curtains and lamps that can diminish the glare. A home that is painted only in white and has very bright lights has too much Yang! ** For too dark rooms, add extra lamps and paint the walls with bright colors. With extra lamps, make sure you balance the light within the space; so as not to create dark spots.

Color Balance If you feel you have too much Yang in and around your place, you can bring in some Yin by introducing colors. If you added more than 4 or 5 colors in, you’re doing it all wrong. Check the colors of the walls, carpets, furniture, decorations and all other interior accessories. The perfect number of colors to use is just 3. That will give the place the aspired tuneful, harmonious look.

Remember that colors have to be balanced quite well. ** If a room is all painted with dark colors or is cold and has very little sunshine. It is considered to be too much Yin. That will psychologically affect you, as spending more time in such a room can make a person feel sick and depressed. ** On the other hand; if a room has only light colors, very bright and very warm; it would generate too much Yang energy. Such kind of bright room won’t help you get a good rest; as a result you will end up drained.

Size & Shape Balance It’s all about balance… Always remember that Yin-Yang concept! •Big furniture is good, but only if you have a big place. So tidy up your space and decide what to get rid of, so your items aren’t too cluttered or close to each other. This would make the room look a lot larger and expander… we sure all need to breathe freely in our rooms, don’t we?!

Dear readers, In order to be balanced within ourselves, we should have a balanced atmosphere. So always remember the Yin-Yang circle when you organize your interior space. Consider the shape of the circle in your mind. A little black in the white and a little white in the black… It’s never the same.

Energy Balance Make sure your chamber doesn’t have a lot of active or passive energy. •Active Rooms (Yang) are loud ones where you watch TV and play games. •Passive rooms (Yin) are more similar to libraries because of the unbroken silence. - Bedrooms and bathrooms should have more Yin energy to soothe and relax you. - Living and gathering rooms for family and friends should have more yang energy to invigorate and cheer.

By Rania Ihab

It’s dark, cold and gloomy. You’re lost, and don’t know where to go. You’re tired trying to reach to the light, where you’re meant to be. Open your eyes now. It is past 6:30 AM, and you’re still in your bed… because you’re UNEMPLOYED!! It’s ok. Just breathe. It’s not the end of the world. It’s a simple phase you will soon get over with, and pass to reach heaven again. Come on. Throw these blankets. Open your curtains. Invite the sun. Feel the morning. Breathe and jump start your new beginning. We all dream of alarm-free Sunday mornings, stress-free Mondays, and a weekend that starts from Tuesday!! Being temporarily unemployed can do wonders for many of us. It’s a perfect time for new beginnings, reorganized priorities and mind breaks…For workaholics, it’s like being thrown out of paradise to the hell of doing nothing! The thing with workaholics is that they must do something constructive, something that makes them feel useful, and constantly progressing! They like challenges and being busy. So what a better challenge than being busy fighting the unemployment challenge!

Who is a Workaholic? Who is a Workaholic? Workaholics are those who are compelled to their jobs. They enjoy working so much to the point that work becomes their families, friends and all that matters in their universe. Their huge obsession with their jobs prevents them from maintaining a healthy lifestyle. They are completely fixated on their careers that they forget their social lives, and their health status only turn from bad to worse. Workaholics are mainly addicted to adrenaline. Because of their constant high level of stress; their bodies produce the adrenaline that gives them the urge to be busy all the time, and to be constantly working and progressing. This addiction makes them loose track of time that they neglect their personal lives and health care.

Unemployed Workaholic Workaholics live for their jobs. For them work is more important than anything. They can work anytime and anywhere. They keep no track of time, and they are always suffering from constant stress and high anxiety. They are very competitive, and intense. Work is their life and their only pleasure. They mostly use work as an escape to distant themselves from unwanted feelings, and relationships. The difference between the unemployed workaholic and any other unemployed person is that the first faced two completely opposite phases. He’s a workaholic, but suddenly he became unemployed. He was thrown outside his comfort zone to a completely strange new place for him. Something he didn’t experience before. When work turns into addiction it becomes harder and harder for the workaholic to function. For a workaholic, being unemployed is like dealing with an opposite force.

Unemployment and work are just like any other natural phenomena; they are concluded to Yin and Yang. The meanings of Yin and Yang are originated from the lives of the early Chinese people who used to depend on the sun for their life routines. Yin-Yang explains the relationship between human and nature. Being a workaholic means you’re going out of the natural-ordered pattern of the universe. Nature has to stop you to recreate the lost balance. Not only does the yin-yang explanation illuminate natural phenomena, it also implies that there is a relationship between natural events and work system. One must align his actions with the orientation of the universe, to be rewarded with prosperity. Being extremely intense about what you do will only cause destruction to your life system, resulting to consequences like unemployment.

What Happens when Workaholics face Unemployment? Being unemployed is the most devastating stressful feeling any one can sense. It creates worries about tomorrow, what’s next, and how one can survive financially. If you’re a workaholic, all these worries are multiplied by ten, not to mention the extra stress and the feeling that you’re useless. Workaholics tend to suffer from identity crises when they are unemployed. Simply because they are what they work. As we said before they lose themselves in the flow and stress of work that they forget their social and personal lives. When workaholics suddenly become unemployed, they don’t know who they are anymore; and they become lonelier than ever. Hey, I know it’s difficult, but just think about it. The glass is still half full. You’re not working, but you are talented and experienced. You left a place, yet there are millions more waiting for you. Seize this traumatic change for total liberation and renovation. Accept your reality. Work for your new start. And you will see that this unemployment break is not a bad thing after all. It’s just all what you needed for a very long time. You have to deal with such overwhelming need to work, the loneliness and boredom; and learn how to find your satisfaction. Be your own boss. Open the old pages. Figure out what you’ve been missing! Wipe the dust off your shelved passions, and reconsider your old dreams. Consider yourself amidst a journey of self-discovery. Enjoy every moment. It’s time to be the person you’ve always wanted to be!

Where to Start? 1-First, YOU NEED A BREAK! Relax as much as you can. Lose all the stress you are carrying inside. Break free from all the anxiety that has been holding you down. Sleep. Clear your mind. It’s your time. It’s your break. And you deserve to enjoy it. 2-Secondly, you need to face the facts. Don’t escape your problems by entering into deep depression! By the time you realize where you are, what you have reached, and most importantly why you have reached it; it will all work once again. 3- Your life is not empty. Believe me! There is a lot there to do; delayed projects, an old hobby, an unfulfilled dream, spending more quality time with your estranged family and friends!! Start digging for things you have been missing in your life, and you will find something to take away all the free time. 4- Think about your next step! Did you enjoy that career path of yours? Or was your work obsession taking all the needed concentration? What do you want to do now? What should be your next step? Update your C.V and cover letter. Search for new opportunities. Don’t narrow yourself in few choices. Increase your options, and enjoy the process. Don’t struggle, and always remember that it’s a temporary phase you should pass with composure, for you to be back in the game. 5-Never give up. If a door is closed, another will open. Life is filled with ups and downs, and the winter must end for the spring to come. Don’t rush yourself. Take all the time you need and understand it’s not just you. At some point, everyone will find themselves on couch on a Tuesday morning watching their favorite re-runs. It’s the circle of life. Being unemployed is not the end of the world. You’re not defeated. It’s just a round. Your body and mind need the rest and they will thank you for it later ;)

Find Your Balance At the end, always work on finding your balance. It’s important to work hard but as hard as you work, reward yourself. Don’t stop your life at one station. The train of life is still moving. There are more horizons to reach. Live it to the max and always remember: it’s never the end as long as you’re alive and breathing!

-You have a unique combination; you are an actress with a master’s degree in Political Science. Both paths are completely different. What drew you to each of them? *I have always wanted to be an actress; it was my dream since a very young age. At some point, I even considered working as a director to do something related to the cinema world, but of course my parents wanted me to study something -if you can say- more serious. So I studied political science and got my Master’s degree. Although I was very clever, it was not what I wanted to do. While studying, I started acting at the college’s theatre. I also did some screen roles, but when I finished my studies I decided to follow my passion and focus on acting.

-Were you able to adapt easily to your new life after moving to Egypt?

*Absolutely. The society here in Egypt is not so different from the Tunisian. There are some minor cultural differences, but at the end, it’s the Middle East, where all Arabs share many similarities. Maybe the most difficult thing was living away from my friends and family in Tunisia, but living in a country like Egypt among the Egyptian people feels a lot like home.

-Inside every person there is an “Alter Ego”, how can you describe your opposite self? And when does she take control? *We are always fighting (she laughs). As you said inside every person there are two opposites, one controls the heart and the other controls the mind. Naturally one of them should have control more than the other in order to create balance, but my heart and mind are equally in control and that’s why they are living in a constant conflict. Sometimes my alter ego takes control especially in work, but in personal life, emotions are my leader.

-How much do you rely on the real Dorra when you prepare for a new role?

R

*It depends on the role I am playing. If we share a lot of common traits, I rely on my character. But if the role is completely different, I try to lose Dorra and turn into the character I am playing. Whoever she is.

-Every actor/actress reaches a state of unity with his/her character at some point, how long does the character stays with you? And how do you master to get rid of your character’s possession? * It depends on how deep the role is. I don’t live in character or transmigrate. I return immediately to my true self the moment we finish shooting, but some scenes strike me, especially the strong emotional ones. When I am doing a strong emotional scene, I tend to stay in character and it keeps haunting me even in my dreams!

-When it comes to your life choices, Do you like to play it safe or are you more of a spontaneous character? *I am spontaneous, very spontaneous (She laughs) Well, not totally! But if I feel like doing something, I do it immediately. With people, I am always natural and spontaneous; even in my work projects. But again, naturally, on the long run one must think, plan, and consider tomorrow. But in my daily life, I am spur-of-the-moment kind of person.

-And when it comes to the important life decisions ?! *If it’s a life changing decision, I take lots and lots of time to make the proper one. I can drive myself crazy because I tend to over think and hesitate in these essential life matters.

-But are you a risk taker?! *In work, I am a risk taker. I like to do the hard difficult roles that are not like me. I like to change my skin doing varieties of different roles, and I did that more than once. On the other hand, if I am at a party or doing a photo-shoot or something, I must do what suits my personality. I am neither showy nor conservative, but I prefer moderation, elegance and simplicity.

A

-If you have to quit acting for some reason, what would it be? It is possible to happen any time. As much as I love acting and do it with passion, it’s a very hard job and if I lost my passion, I will quit immediately. When I feel like I am not doing any new interesting roles and what’s offered to me is not that good, I won’t “quit”, but I will consider a long break till I find the suitable role.

-What has changed in your personality and life in general after becoming a celebrity?

(She laughs). I didn’t change with my family and friends; I still have the same habits with the people close to me. Being a famous person, however, puts an extra load over my shoulders. I have to always consider how I look, how I walk &

talk and every step should be calculated. I must consider that I should never look grumpy or angry, even if I was. I must treat people nicely, smile and pose for pictures like nothing is wrong. That’s a lot of pressure. Unfortunately a celebrity’s privacy is partially lost.

The other load is social media and fake accounts! There are lots of fake accounts under my name and they post photos and talk to people as if they are the real Dorra. Some people are nice enough to create fan pages, but those who pretend to be a celebrity; they are mentally ill and physiologically unstable. Believe it or not, the fake twitter account under my name has more followers than my real one… I don’t know what is their benefit in doing this?

-What does it take in your opinion to have a balanced community of equal men and women? *You know, we were able to achieve social equality between both sexes in Tunisia. It’s hard to reach the total maximum of equality of course even in America and Europe, but there must be equal rights for men and women. Especially now that women work and succeed like men do, and sometimes more. A lot of careers were limited to men, now women succeed and shine in them. Plus we are wives and mothers. We carry more responsibilities than men, but unfortunately we are still oppressed and maltreated. You see, both men and women get the same amount of education, work at the same field and succeed together; but when there is only one to be promoted or get a raise, of course it’s the man because “HE’S A MAN”. Many women are asked to quit their jobs after marriage, as if all their efforts and hard work to prove themselves as efficient members of the community mean nothing to their men. Where is the equality in that?! I know we are moving forward, but there are a lot of changes that need to happen - in both our community and the law - to provide women with the rightful place they deserve, and not to be the ones to blame!

-Now that you’re playing an important role -as Berlanty Abdelhamid- in a historical drama about an era ironically has a lot of political similarities to the current state of Egypt. How can you describe such a controversial character and her huge effect in that sensitive time? *Berlanty is a unique combination. She was a beautiful, sexy woman who was very powerful and determined. When she considered doing something; she did it no matter what. She got married to Abdelhakim Amer, she agreed to become a second wife and faced the entire world just to marry the man she’s in love with. I see some aspects of her in me, actually!

-Would you normally be attracted to someone who’s like you? Or do you believe that opposites attract? *As much as I wish to find someone whose personality is like mine, I believe that opposites attract. But because they are opposites, they tend to live in conflict…

-Do you believe that beauty and intelligence are interdependent or can each exist without the other?

Media Corner

Ruffles Bolero by Dina Shaker Tote by Rons Bags @ Amuse-lifestyle Concept Store Bijoux @ L’Azurde

*Of course they can exist without each other, but they won’t be complete. Beauty alone is not enough. If someone is beautiful and not intelligent; the moment he/she starts to talk, all beauty will fade away. I believe that beauty is a temporary thing. Eventually, one will grow up, get old and good looks will disappear. On the other hand, intelligence is eternal. I believe that intellect is what makes people beautiful. If someone attracts you with his/her personality and brains, you will see him/ her beautiful. And I don’t mean that people should feed their brains and neglect their external appearances; both beauty and intelligence should complete each other.

-In the yin-yang philosophy, yin is the soft dark feminine and yang is the powerful bright masculine! How do you expect your yang to be? *Well now that you did this interview, I want you to answer this question.

I think he should be intelligent, open-minded and cool… *She smiled: Thank you, you got it right!

-Do you describe yourself as more of a yin or yang person? *Maybe I am more of a yang person, but sometimes I am super emotional, sentimental and romantic, so I believe both. I think it has to do with me being an actress. Sometimes, I am very sociable. I want to talk, meet new people and enjoy life. Other times, I just want to stay alone. Any actor/actress must have both yin and yang in their characters. We are constantly among people. We need both yin and yang to be able to deal with all the different personalities we meet, to get to know who is real and who is not.

-Are metaphysics and paranormals of interest to you? Why? *Of course not! I believe it’s incorrect and kinda scary to consider thinking about such abnormal stuff. Over-thinking these unnatural phenomena will only lead one to the wrong path. It’s not a right thing to start with in the first place.

Sides to the same Trend Magnificent at the End Karl Lagerfield once said,

“A woman is the most beautiful doll I have ever dressed.”

These dolls maybe bold enough to wear the same dress, but each knew how to translate her own style. Just like the two sides of the same coin, they looked equally perfect. Kate Midelton vs. Angelina Jolie Kate Middleton wowed everybody (naturally) wearing a silver silk one-shoulder Jenny Packhman, when she attended a charity at St.James’ palace. Not so long before, Angelina Jolie flaunted the red version of the dress at the premiere of Tree of life... Personally, I am confused, what about you?

Jane Fonda vs. Ciara Nothing is ever wrong with Jane Fonda! With her age and posture, she is always glowing like a diamond in the dark sky. At Cannes 2011, Fonda attended the premiere of Sleeping Beauty in a costume made Emilio Pucci. Seeing her in this dress just makes me believe that this woman will never grow old. Ciara previously showed off the sexier version of the dress and she totally dared to bare! But my hat is off to Fonda’s look, it was totally age appropriate and she couldn’t be any more glamorous.

Selena Gomez vs. Celine Dion Selena Gomez’s look in the MTV Video Music Awards stopped me for a whole 10 minutes. She was wearing a long lingerie-inspired dark blue Versace Dress, from the brand’s fall 2013 collection. She styled it up wearing the same shoes that was used at the Versace show and some green Lorraine Schwartz earrings. She looked spectacular! Leaving this beautiful look, I stopped again at Celine Dion performing on the Voice season 5 finale wearing the short black version of the dress. Honestly, I couldn’t tell who wore it better, both ladies looked phenomenal.

Vanessa Williams vs. Eva Longoria Attention ladies! There’s a Desperate House Wives’ faceoff, or not! Eva Longoria wore the white Marchesa creation back in 2009, she paired it with a side swept do, gold peep-toe sling backs, and crystal quartz earrings. In 2011, Vanessa Williams sported the strapless dress completing her ensemble with studded platform sandals and hoop earrings. This is one hell of a tough battle!

Yi n - Ya n g

Screen Symbolism By Rania Salem

Yin-Yang doesn’t only indicate romantic love, but also all kinds of relationships and other universal connections… The Yin-Yang theory can be applied on anything and lots of artistic creations depended on the Yin-Yang concept as a tool to deliver their messages to the audience… For a clearer vision, let me introduce you to some of these works of art

Man of Tai Chi (Movie 2013) The fight is the main theme in Keanu Reeves’ first directing experience “Man of Tai Chi”. The story revolves around a lot of conflicts between past & future, good & bad and strong & weak. Reeves worked on two opposite tracks; the old-school kung-fu movies, and the modern China symbolized by the high rising Beijing, where most of the story unwinds. Talented but headstrong Tiger has a serious life force problem that controls him. His Master Yang warned him from a possible reverse that will leave him unbalanced (he is more Yang than Yin). Yet Tiger intended on proving that there’s more to Tai Chi than just meditation. He competes in televised events till he catches the attention of the wealthy fixer; Donaka Mark, one of those cackling villains (played by Keanu Reeves himself).

Malak Wa Shaitan Angel & Devil (Movie 1960) This film shows different aspects of Yin and Yang such as rich vs. poor and good vs. evil. The plot is about a rich couple and their five-year old daughter, Sawsan (played by little Iman Zou Alfkar) who witnesses the robbery of her home, gets kidnapped and held as a hostage by the gang until her family pays the ransom. One of the gang members, Ezzat (Roshdy Abaza) and his girlfriend, Khairia (Nagwa fouad) feel sympathy towards the little girl and decide to save her, although their boss gave them orders to kill her. The good fights the evil and wins at the end. Ezzat succeeds in saving the little girl’s life and delivers her to her family, paying his precious life as the price.

What is Taijitu? The Yin-Yang sign is called Taijitu or Taji-diagram, which means the supreme ultimate. It represents the principles of opposite energies. In visual works that feature East Asian mysticism or cinematic martial-arts, there is a huge possibility of a Taijitu appearance. Whether as a rare artifact, a hanged wall-sized scroll, or as a design on the robes of the sensei’s… The presence of this element serves to teach the audience about the great Eastern believes…

Media Corner

In Motion Pictures *The heroine in Shaolin Soccer traces Taijitu in a bread dough as she uses her kung-fu skills to make dumplings. *In another Stephen Chow film, Kung Fu Hustle, the landlord traces out a Taijitu in the courtyard of Pig Sty Alley, while fighting the musical assassins. *In The Karate Kid (2010). Taijitu was part of Dre’s kung-fu teachings; Mr. Han took him up a tall mountain to the Dragon Well. The well is a shallow fountain with a Yin-Yang symbol in the center. * In Kung Fu Panda, the Taijitu also appears as the Pool of Sacred Tears; a mountain top lake which was said to be the birth-place of kung fu. *In Kung Fu Panda 2, the Taijitu frequently appeared in various background elements.

In Western Animation *Avatar: The Last Airbender; the moon and ocean spirits are shown as black and white catfishes that constantly follow each other in a pond near the North Pole. This is used to represent the gravitational rotations of the moon and the tide that water-bending is based on. It’s also based on the real martial of Tai Chi Chuan, in which Yin and Yang (hardness and softness) are key concepts. Even the name derives from the Taijitu. Ta-Chi and Taiji are different ways of transliterating the same symbols from Chinese. *The Disney animated series Yin Yang Yo features twin kung fu rabbits. Naturally they used the Taijitu in the logo. *American Dragon Jake Long: Yin and Yang became an issue in the episode where Jake learned about his duplication powers. *Legend of the Dragon: The Master of Darkness”Yin” wears an outfit with the dark half of the Yin-Yang symbol. *Jackie Chan Adventures: The last talisman (a ring or a stone believed to be a source of magic and good luck) is debuted to have Yin-Yang based powers.

In Video Games *The two playable dragons Ryu and Fou-lu are explicitly “Yin” and “Yang” themed (despite the fact that most of their forms resemble western dragons). The Yin-Yang theme is clear in the part of Ryu Playing with Fire whilst Fou-lu is making a water splash, explicitly setting Fou-lu up as “Yin” and Ryu as “Yang”. *Speaking of Taijitu and The Eight Trigrams, the end stage of the game involves the player’s character fighting his Yin-half on a stage in which “The Static Heaven” bagua pattern from feng-shui practice (which Yin-Yang is one of its components) is drawn. That is heavily implied to be an imperial summoning circle of some sort. *Blaz Blue’s Litchi Faye-Ling has a lot of Yin-Yang motifs. She wears a stylish Chinese doctor’s uniform with long white sleeves, A Yin-Yang brooch ribbon, a red vest, and a skirt dress. In battle, her hair is tied into a ponytail with a Yin-Yang hair accessory at the end of the ponytail.

In Literature *In the Wheel of Time by Robert Jordan, Rand uses the Yin-Yang symbol of the ancient Aes Sedai. Since he is a male channeler himself and is allied with channelers of both sexes. *The Taijitu symbol is featured in Judge Dee’s story “The Haunted Monastery” providing the crucial clue that solved the mystery.

Heal Your Broken Soul By Haya Arafa

Yin-Yang and Your Soul Yin and yang are two opposite forces that complement each other. The yin-yang theory can be extended to everything: black and white, hot and cold, dry and wet. Without darkness, nothing will distinguish the light. The stars and the moon need blackness to be seen. For human beings, the physical body is yang and the soul is yin. The soul is beyond the threedimensional world, it is regarded as mind, spirit, thought and consciousness. Think about the simple things you come across every day: posters on streets, ads in newspapers and magazines, commercials on TV shows. What are they all about? The new compound that will provide you with the perfect relaxed life, the car of your dreams, the dazzling food choices, and skin products that will make you look fantastic. All such materialistic stuff emphasizes only one thing: appearance. They’re not what would make you happy. What about your soul? What if you’re depressed and your soul is broken? What if you’re feeling the blues? What would help you then?! There’s a dark side to life and you have to accept it, for it will help you move forward towards the light. Getting to know both sides of your soul will make you realize that perfection does not exist. If you never experienced the chill of a dark winter, you would never cherish the warmth of a bright summer day!

What is a soul?! Your soul is who you really are. Your deepest most sincere beliefs, your life philosophy, your feelings, emotions, and senses. Your idea of what is right and what is wrong, it all comes from the soul. Even this feeling of

emptiness and loneliness that keeps digging inside you, that you can’t talk about. It’s because when you do, everyone thinks that there’s something wrong with you. They go like what happened to the people in your life? But then again the strange thing is, your life can be filled with people but you’re still alone. A feeling of depression fills you as you wish for time to freeze, so as to stop this terrible pain. There’s nothing wrong with that, sometimes you just need to stand alone to get yourself together and continue the race of life.

You know you’ve a broken soul when -You have been depressed for more than six weeks. -You are not excited about anything, life is meaningless. -You suffer from an eating disorder. -You’re always bored, and constantly complaining about hating your life and yourself. -You are not doing anything productive with your time.

Get Ready for a Significant Breakthrough Happiness dwells in the soul, and your soul owns the map to your future. So if you trust this hidden side inside you, it will take you where you NEED to go, not where you want to go. Healing your soul will expand your social awareness, and help you achieve the personal and professional goals in arrangement with your true-self.

Sound Body, Mind & Soul

How to heal your broken soul? 1- First you must confront your difficulties. God puts you in these situations for a reason. Sometimes it as simple as to follow his guidance. 2- Go on a journey of self-discovery. Explore yourself. What is it exactly that you want? What makes you happy? What is your favorite color, food, song, movie, day of the week, holiday? All these internal things will reveal what’s deep inside you, and create your external picture. 3- Do not wait for motivation or support from others. Be independent. Start exactly where you are. Start now. 4- Forgive everyone. Forgive the people who hurt you. Forgive yourself for past mistakes. You are what you are because of your mistakes. Pain will leave you, when you let go. “There is one emotion that is stronger than fear, and that is forgiveness.” 5- Visualize your future and block your past. Eliminate “ANTS” Automatic Negative Thoughts. They never represent absolute truth. They just keep you in trouble.

so does crying. That’s why you feel better after a good cry. 12- Feed your soul. Ever wondered why your soul expands when you witness a full moon or a sunset! Feed it with whatever activity that makes you feel blissful. Try something new: scuba diving, art class, book club or even blogging. 13- Work Out! Run, swim, dance, or even kick-box. Remember Miss Elle Woods’ wise words, “Exercise gives you endorphins, endorphins make you happy.” On a physiological level; exercise increases the activity of serotonin, and stimulates brain chemicals that foster the growth of nerve cells. On the emotional level, you are taking charge and becoming the master of your mind and body.

him for the bad and the good, he’s the great almighty. I know it is easier said than done, but if you can get to that place; your soul will find peace again.

My dear readers! Blink away

And most important…

the tears, move forward, and be strong. Even if the first step hurts, believe that everything will be okay soon. Always remember that the end of the rigorous, hurtful experience is usually the beginning of a new amazing one. Let go.

14- Pray for healing. The cure is inside you, you just need to ask for it. Pray and ask God to help you. He’s the only one who can. Thank

It is your job to fill the emptiness, and you can do it, with the help of your higher power; your soul!

6- Help someone else. When you turn your attention to someone close to you, especially if they’re suffering from the same problem, you will concentrate your energy to be with them and forget about yourself for a split moment. 7- Always find unique ways to put a smile on other people’s faces. Their smiles will make you beam. 8- Be True to yourself. Have faith and enjoy the company of those who give you hope. 9- Make a small change every once in a while. Give yourself certain time and challenge yourself that you’ll stop a bad habit or add something positive to your life. Take it slowly, it’s okay, but give yourself a time limit. (Hello smokers!) 10- Think about that one thing people praise you for. Try to improve it and use it wisely. 11- Laugh and cry. Humor heals, and

JERK or NERD

Which way to go?! By Merna Tarek

Most guys nowadays are cautious about their personal images. They go on diets, go to the gym and exercise. I know. It seems like an excellent lifestyle. But try adding buying designer clothes, speaking in slang and treating girls with a disrespectful attitude to the list; and you’re up to what is known as “a douchebag”. For those of you who don’t know, “a douche” is an indecent man, or to put it mildly; a qualified jerk! The question is why do guys act this way?! Simply, some guys believe that mistreating girls or becoming “douches” is the secret to attracting any woman they want, or as they falsely trust, “A woman wants her man to be handsome, cruel and tough.” This ridiculous idea is only true in action movies!! Dear Machos, try changing genres once in a while, because this is not the case. How on earth is it possible that someone prefers to be treated like a maid rather than a princess?

Word to the wise, a girl will never love a man who treats her like second base and concentrates on her body rather than her eyes when he is talking to her.

86

Now, let me introduce you to an average guy who is cute, decent, sensitive and humble, but his only flaw is being shy. He’s what we might call “a nerd”. The problem with this guy is his lack of confidence, especially when he compares himself to a body-built macho. He has no guts to express his feelings to the girl he likes; because he is convinced he will never be good enough for her. Believe me guys, you got it all wrong!! A good man is the one who knows how to treat his girl like a lady. He doesn’t need to look like a bag of muscles. He just needs to be polite, decent and positively different. Society and peer pressure portray the so-called “douches” as the ideal male image. They only convince men to believe that unless they look and act like “jerks”, they will never be masculine enough for any girl, which is not realistic BTW! Seriously, enough action movies! A drama or a romantic comedy from time to time will put you on the right track!! And for this reason, those genuinely poor nerds are torn between whether to completely change their personalities and turn into “douches” (like we don’t have enough). Or stay nerds and live a lifelong misery of being single. Listen dear jerks and nerds, and listen carefully. A girl doesn’t care how macho you look. What’s really important is your personality, how you treat her and how you care about the small details that make her happy. She needs your love, not your ridiculously inapt treatment. And yes we admire the six packs, but just like we admire a beautiful statue. We know it’s mute, deaf and empty from the inside. No girl would ever consider dating a statue, you know!! A girl will truly love you because of who you are, not how handsome you look. Just be yourself, that’s all what matters. Treat her like a princess and give her your undivided attention, and she will treat you like the gentleman you really are.

If you are in doubt and don’t know how to treat your girl. Remember. It is far better to be nerdy and cute rather than a flirty douche.

Dear man! You’re fooling yourself, thinking you won the battle of sexes. Just think again. How will you survive if your Mrs. disappeared for one day?! It will be the end of your world! You’re so busy complaining; that you have no idea what’s really going on. Here’s a little secret; women are living in a daily battle to verify themselves. And for what reason?! They don’t need public recognition to prove what they can do. They are strong and independent. They have the ability to do it all without asking for applause. It’s just in their nature. Something generated from their instincts! Once upon a not-so-far-away land, there was a very familiar couple. Mr. Blaming is never satisfied. Nothing ever pleases him. He’s always complaining about anything and everything. His poor spouse is doing everything she can to take care of the kids, the house, and to create for him the quite environment he needs to concentrate on his career. She never asks for anything and she does all what he demands. And of course it’s not enough! Mr. Blaming is always criticizing her, for being a failure example in comparison to his friend’s wife who is a very successful, career-driven lady…On the other side; his friend Mr. Jealous is not at all satisfied in his marriage. He’s the Mrs.’ husband (or at least that’s what he thinks). His wife is very ambitious and hardworking that she owned a very prestigious position in no time. But of course instead of encouraging her and helping her to succeed and shine bright, he’s accusing her that she’s not taking a very good care of her family. That she’s very obsessed with her career ignoring her husband’s future. And that’s the reason why he’s not promoted yet, because “his wife” didn’t work hard enough to earn his promotion!

I always wonder what would eversatisfy men. It seems like nothing is ever enough for them. They will always compare you to someone who is simply not you! They want you to be like a piece of clay that they should constantly remodel whenever they are bored with the current version. It was once said, “It’s hard to be a woman; you should think like a man, act like a lady, look like a young girl, and work like a horse”… What about you Sir? I know you should always act like a man and be “extra manly’ about your ego, yet you’re not even doing half what your Mrs. is doing. Please don’t bother using the “I am the man” excuse, because a real man knows how to make his wife feel like a precious diamond. And no, we’re not asking for diamonds, but a little encouragement and support will do the trick! I am not saying that men should get out of the picture but logically speaking women are stronger “P.S they don’t need any biceps to prove it!” They can achieve things a lot easier and smoother simply because they don’t have “The Masculine Pride”. And that I can definitely prove… -Multi tasking is a woman’s game. Your Mrs. can talk on the phone,

fold up the laundry and have an eye on your younger baby; while you’re lying on the couch watching TV!

- They have no problem asking for help. And that’s why they go to places

quicker and do things better, because they have no masculine ego to stop them!

-Women are very good in understanding emotions.

Next time you plan on shipping your crying child to your lady, try to spare 5 minutes of your precious time to understand what’s wrong with him; instead of shutting him up with a bar of candy!

-Nothing stops a woman from being up to her duty.

A woman can be very sick but this will never prevent her from getting up and doing all the work she’s got to do. It never does on her pink days. And it never even does when she’s pregnant!

Dear Mr. Blaming, do you know how hard it is for your lady to take care of the kids? Maybe she is not a huge executive in a multi-national company, but she is not jobless! She is having the greatest job any woman could ever dream of. She’s a mother! She’s sacrificing her personal dreams to be there for you and your kids. Just think, when have you ever needed her and she wasn’t right there for you?! She’s having you as her priority… Yes, thanks for noticing! And you Mr. My-wife-is-moresuccessful-than-me; yes, she’s

more successful, and she earned every moment of it. She’s an independent powerful smart lady who is killing herself to be able to manage her double lives. So instead of accusing her that she’s more successful than you are; stay by her side, show her your love and support, and instead of being intimidated by her success, use her as a source of inspiration. Women have very important roles as much as men do. If a woman is not working, that does not make her a quitter. It just means her priorities are organized differently than the one who does…And the career-oriented mum, she’s not at all ignoring her house. She’s just a super hero who is doing the impossible to be the best role model for her children. So remember my dear macho man,“Only insecure boys will belittle a woman, the greatest way to “man up” is to empower women.”

Dr Steve Maraboli.
