Maglin Sustainability Initiative

Year 2 Review

®

Message from the President and CEO

As we celebrate our 40th anniversary at Maglin, we remain dedicated to creating a sustainable future and leaving a positive impact on the environment, our employees, and communities. Sustainability is a central focus of our business, and we are delighted to report the progress we have made.

Our sustainability approach revolves around three main pillars: People, Place, and Product. This year, I’m especially proud of our people. Our employees have shown unwavering commitment by embracing the Zero Waste philosophy and actively participating in every aspect of our Sustainability Initiative. Their enthusiastic efforts have transformed them into environmental champions, and we are privileged to have them on our team.

This report outlines the progress and achievements of the Maglin Sustainability Initiative during its second year. I trust it demonstrates our commitment to reducing our environmental impact and generating positive change in the spaces where we live and work. Our progress has been possible thanks to the support and cooperation of our employees, the collaboration with our suppliers and community, and the valuable feedback from our customers. For that, I extend my gratitude.

Sincerely,

Sustainability Statement

Maglin Site Furniture shapes your environment, and we want to keep it healthy. At Maglin, we understand our products become part of the natural and built environment. We want to care for the spaces our products occupy and the people who will enjoy them for generations to come.

People Place Product

People are at the center of what we do, and we believe that protecting our environment starts with the choices we make.

Place is where work happens. We commit to reduce energy usage, water, transportation, resources, and waste.

Product is what represents us. We believe we should be responsible for the full lifecycle of our products – from how they are made to where they end up.

Maglin

is a proud member of Zero Waste Oxford.

“In addition to multiple on-site initiatives to vastly reduce wastes of all kinds, Maglin has organized participatory events for staff which help extend their focus on waste reduction of cloth and organics. As a member of Zero Waste, Maglin’s leadership has inspired plants in other industrial sectors to find additional effective ways to reduce waste and the public to tackle organic wastes.”

- Bryan Smith, co-chair of Zero Waste Oxford

Community Involvement

Seven Master of Landscape Architecture students from the University of Guelph started One Bench One Tree to install benches and plant native trees at hospitals across Canada.

Maglin Site Furniture maintains a longstanding and valued relationship with the Landscape Architecture program at the University of Guelph. As a result, our partnership was a natural fit. It is our honor to donate benches and help give the gift of rest to patients and healthcare workers.

“Our objective it to offer an invitation to rest, recuperate, and regenerate through installing a native tree two meters in front of a bench across hospital landscapes in Canada.” One Bench One Tree founder Everett DeJong explains.

Site Tours

Maglin’s Head of Sustainability, along with municipal representatives and other members of Zero Waste Oxford, traveled to Drumbo & London to visit StormFisher organics recycling facilities. Maglin sends all their organic waste here – paper towels, food scraps, and coffee grounds – where they are “digested” without oxygen to create nutrient-rich fertilizer and renewable natural gas.

South Gate Centre

Maglin has been donating their offcuts of Ipe & thermally modified ash wood to the woodworking shop at the South Gate Centre; a community center for 50+ adults. They make kids benches, charcuterie boards, tables, and more with the wood, for gifts or to sell at markets.

Community Clean-up

On Earth Day (Saturday, April 22, 2023), Maglin challenged their employees to go out and help their local environment by participating in a cleanup in their neighborhoods. Sarah Doyle - Maglin’s Head of Sustainability is pictured with her dog Mako cleaning up a park in Etobicoke.

Sustainability Initiative Year

Two: Walking the Walk

Together with the support of our customers and suppliers, we can lead the North American site furniture space toward a more balanced, circular, and traceable future for all.

The Future of Sustainability at Maglin

Sustainability has become a core component of who Maglin is as a company - something that is considered at all stages of operations. We take pride in our progress toward sustainability but acknowledge that more must be done.

We are committed to educating our staff on climate change so that everyone within our company can understand its potential impact on us as individuals and as a business. To this end, several team members have already completed the Rewrite Climate Course.
