tudents, staff, and district personnel showed their respect for school founder Vidal M. Treviño at a memorial service next to the Force of Creation on Jan. 12. Treviño died on Dec. 30 at the age of 77. Before anything had started, some of the students received a red or a pink rose as they arrived. Then, school director Jose Cerda spoke about Treviño. “The vision he had for this school, for this district, can never be duplicated by anyone. He had a vision, not only for this school district, but for this school,” Cerda said. He then introduced David Colunga, senior theater student. Colunga read a biography about Treviño. Cerda then recognized the faculty and staff who had been at VMT since the school opened 14 years ago. Armando Hinojosa, department head of visual arts and an original faculty member, discussed his history with Treviño. He explained how he met Treviño and what a good sense of humor he had. Hinojosa said Treviño offered him a job as the head of the art department while he was a teacher at Cigarroa High School. Hinojosa discovered a little about Treviño when he was hired to make the bust of Treviño that’s in the Harding Building. “I had to go to Treviño’s

Founder passes away at 77 BY KIMBERLY EVANS MT STAFF WRITER Former superintendent Vidal M. Treviño passed away Dec. 30. He devoted 46 years to LISD and the education of Laredo’s youth. Treviño was the first to recognize the educational needs for south Laredo and planned for its schools, according to a link on the district’s Web site. Some say one of his greatest accomplishments in the district was the Vidal M. Treviño Magnet School of

Communications and Fine Arts. This school was named in his honor, and was the first magnet school in Laredo. Several teachers and students were asked to recall their fondest memory of Treviño, and what their reaction was towards his death. Sculpture and jewelry making instructor and Visual Arts department head Armando Hinojosa remembered an incident involving Treviño. “When I was sculpting Mr. Treviño’s bust (head sculpture) I remembered him falling

asleep. He looked at peace,” Hinojosa said. Social Studies instructor Matias Arambula recalled a meeting after the school opened. “My fondest memory of Mr. Vidal Treviño is the meeting he had with the VMT faculty during the early weeks after VMT opened in 1993. In that meeting, he explained his goals for the school and forewarned us about how controversial the school was going to be. Truly an era in Laredo ended when he passed away,” Arambula

District planning for changes in calendar, class schedule BY VERONICA MEDELLIN MT STAFF WRITER Next year’s proposed schedule could allow for smaller classes and better use of time. VMT Director Jose Cerda said the district is thinking of changing the high school schedule because all three high schools have inadequate scores on TAKS. “For the students’ benefits, they need to focus more on school and pass the TAKS with better scores,” Cerda said. This change will also allow students to better stay on task and will be more prepared for TAKS, he explained.

“Very few students have homework, and 50 minutes in class will allow them to take the unfinished class work for homework so that the students don’t waste time in class,” Cerda stated. He also spoke about how the change in the calendar will affect the school year, caused by a change in state law. “School will start in the latter part of August and end in May,” Cerda stated. “It will give students less time to waste and to really get them on task, so it will give students more advantages to pass the TAKS.” Cerda also explained when the school board will decide for sure on

the new calendar. “The school board will need to concentrate on the schedule. However, within the next month they’ll make a choice,” Cerda said. “We will also need to wait for the new superintendent to get his/her opinion. “We will know the answer and it will be available to the public the same week they decide to make the change,” Cerda stated. Cerda also said V.M.T. is planning to be a little different than home schools, including smaller classes. Cerda mentioned that there had been some reactions to these proposed changes. “There have been some, including

New student teacher brings her art to life

BY NATALIE CASTILLO MT STAFF WRITER A mural by an art teacher and his students is featured on the cover of a college textbook. The mural, painted in 2003, was by instructor Jorge Vasquez and several of his students on a building in the Azteca neighborhood. The Azteca neighborhood is east of the International Bridge II. Vasquez’s friend, Nancy P. McKee, a college professor, was on vacation in Laredo during the painting of the mural. “The author is a friend of mine from Washington State. She has always been interested in the Mexican culture, and has been a great supporter of the arts. She was actually here during the panting of the mural while on vacation, sitting across the street watching. She liked it and want to use it as a cover for her book,” said Vasquez. He never imaged that one of his murals would have been used on the cover of a college text book. Vasquez was happy with his students’ efforts on the mural. “I was very proud and pleased with the kids that did the mural with me. When we were finished it was like, ‘Wow, I can’t believe this,’” Vasquez said. The mural was used by McKee and Linda Stone for their book,

earning credits, time for eating lunch, and transportation. We will fix these things so that students can have time to adjust themselves, too,” Cerda said. Cerda described some other reactions he had received. “They are concerned about the schedules. Will they learn? Is there going to be enough time? Will they agree? We hope it will come out as we want. We just need the agreement for the change,” added Cerda. “I know we all like to have some time off once in a while. However, I also know that we need to work harder to succeed,” Cerda added. MT Staff Writer Ofelia Gonzalez contributed to this story.

VMT’s new student teacher says she wants to keep art alive. Kristine Newman, Art department Armando Hinojosa’s new student teacher said she didn’t want to be a teacher until she began her art classes at TAMIU. “I didn’t have the desire until I began my art classes at TAMIU, and wanted others to experience art and keep art alive in schools,” Newman said. Hinojosa says he thinks she is NEWMAN doing fine, and that she is very dedicated to her future career. “I feel lucky because I was selected to be her mentor.” Hinojosa said She will be finishing in about 8 weeks, and at the end of those weeks her TAMIU supervisor will come to check how she’s doing. She found out she had a talent when she noticed she couldn’t stop drawing. Newman’s favorite type of art genre is contemporary painting and life/realistic drawing, but she has done about everything from crafts to drawings and sculptures. She has even had some of her art in shows like in a TAMIU Senior Art Exhibit, “Unwilling Sensation,” and some others. “Art is about you, me, and the environment that surrounds you,” Newman said. Newman said she likes being a student teacher but soon she’ll be finishing her degree and graduating from TAMIU in May 2007.

Seniors plan Winter Ball, Medallion Ceremony BY DELIA DIAZ MT STAFF WRITER The VMT Senior Class made plans for this year’s Winter Ball and discussed medallion requirements during a meeting Jan. 30. Class members met in Social Studies instructor Matias Arambula’s classroom during second period to discuss the ball. A meeting was also held later for afternoon seniors. The sponsors of the Senior Class are Arambula, and Diana Martinez, English instructor. VMT Principal Jose Cerda also attended. To begin with the senior meeting Arambula gave a brief introduction about topics that had been discussed in previous meetings. The ball will take place at the Laredo Center of the Arts on Saturday, Feb. 24. The theme will be “Hollywood — An Evening of Stars”

“We encourage all seniors to attend. Make it enjoyable and memorable.” Senior Class Co-Sponsor Matias Arambula “The Winter Ball for the seniors is coming up and several of you have a lot of questions. We are going to go over some rules and restrictions that will be applied for the winter ball,” Arambula said. These sets of rules apply to the attire of males as well as for females, as they are to wear semi-formal clothing. “The ladies as well as the young men should strictly apply to these rules. Also, the Winter Ball invitations will be available from Feb. 5-20; the price of

the invitations is $10 per person. A couple would be $20,” Arambula explained. The ball will begin at 7 p.m. and will end by 11 p.m. “We encourage all seniors to attend. It’s your senior year. Make it enjoyable and memorable. It is a semi-formal event; let us behave with proper manners and sophistication,” Arambula concluded. Cerda also spoke to the seniors. “I’m glad that we have this great organization. We need the help of each and every one of you to get these plans accomplished,” Cerda said. He also gave information about the medallion and requirements. “Some of the requirements for a senior to obtain the medallion is that the student must have attended VMT at least six semesters,” he said. There are other requirements, also. “Seniors are required to perform a

recital from what they have learned in their fine art areas,” he explained. Cerda concluded with some inspiring words. “I’m very proud of this year’s seniors and the work that you guys have accomplished,” he said. Martinez also discussed the ball and the help that will be needed from the seniors. “We are going to need manpower to help organize the chairs and tables for this event. Ladies can help with the decorating arrangements. If we want this done we all should try to help. It’s very nice to go and just enjoy, but it’s not that way,” Martinez said. To conclude Martinez and Arambula urged the seniors to work to fulfill medallion requirements. “If you want to get your medallion there are certain requirements that have to be completed,” Arambula explained.

Texas State sax players recruit music students SELINA HERNANDEZ AND KRYSTAL BATTISTATA MT STAFF WRITERS Professors and students of Texas State University performed at the recital hall on Jan. 12. Professors Doug Skinner and Todd Oxford, and students Hector Telles, Eden Gonzalez, Nick Conte, and John Lennington, came to show what Texas State’s music program has to offer. Lennington, a graduate of VMT, said he was proud to come back and show what he has learned from the program Skinner said that the purpose of this presentation was to perform for students, interest them and spread the word on what their program offers. “I think that some students enjoyed seeing us play and were impressed by the program,” said Skinner. Two students that were impressed by the saxophone players were Fabiola Rivera, senior, and Klarissa Agüero, freshman. “I thought they were amazing,” said Rivera. The presentation was very helpful for

many students. “They were great saxophone players and they were very helpful,” said Agüero. Sleet threat closes school for 2 days BY CLAUDIA RAMOS AND OFELIA J. GONZALEZ MT STAFF WRITERS School was cancelled on Tuesday, Jan. 16 and Wednesday, Jan. 17 due to the threat of sleet, which never fell. Accordingly, the National Weather Service issued a winter storm warming to Laredo and Webb County. Some students stayed at home while others went out. • “I was at home sleeping and at a friend’s house,” said Valerie Briseño, freshman. • “I bought an aquarium with celery, but we forgot to buy fish,” explained Paty Garcia, junior. • “I went to my boyfriend’s house, and I went chilling out with some friends,” Ofelia Gonzalez, freshman, added. • “I broke up with my boyfriend, but it’s okay because I got an iPod,” Jessica Martinez, junior, said.

• “I went to my friends house and I watched T.V. all day,” stated Luis Villalobos, freshman. • “I hung out with my friends and instead of getting Krispy Kremes, I had to settle for horrible-tasting doughnut dots,” Stephanie Estrada, junior, said. • “I was just at home using the computer,” Clarissa Inocencio, freshman, explained. • “I had just gotten back from Dallas, so I was just at home resting,” Cassandra Perez, junior, said. • “I had basketball practice,” explained Samantha Mancha, junior. • “I don’t remember … I’ve been skipping too much,” Christine Nicole, junior, added. Teachers also took advantage of the days and enjoyed themselves. • “I was with my family, I took care of my nephew, resting, I ate caldo and chili, and

I was also using the Internet,” James Buckley, English instructor, said. • “I was at home. I rested, and I also fixed some things that needed to be done at home,” Mark Webber, Journalism teacher, explained. • “I exercised, I spent time with my family, and I was bored,” Jose Luis Zambrano, Social Studies teacher, added. Districts are required to make up any days lost due to weather, health, or safety issues according to the Texas Education Agency. According to a memo issued to district employees on Feb. 6, make-up days will be Friday, April 16, and Thursday, May 31. Originally April 16 was a scheduled district holiday, and May 31 was a teacher workday, now the last day of classes for students. Teachers will end their work year on Friday, June. 1

Teachers in friendly battle over losing weight in ‘Losers Club’ BY AMANDA CRUZ AND NICK LOPEZ MT STAFF WRITERS The holidays tend to make people put on some weight, but the faculty and staff have found a way to help get rid of some of it. Jose Cerda, VMT principal, came up with a club intended to help the faculty and staff who participate to lose weight. So he asked VMT Nurse Patricia Keck to handle the organization. “The Losers Club” is the name. In this case it’s OK to be a loser because the goal is to lose weight over 12 weeks. Keck took each member’s height, age, weight, and body mass index to group each team with a fair chance of competing against each other. There are 13 members on each team, and the group that reaches the goal of losing 130 pounds wins the challenge. The reward for this is a huge luncheon with delicious MT photo by Amanda Cruz healthy goodies. friends were dieting as well, and doing this with the company of his friends would only give him more support. “My health will benefit from this as well as removing some of my diabetic medications.” said Arambula. A few rules Arambula has set for his new eating habits are no sodas (not even diet), no fries, more vegetables and plenty of water. When it comes to the exercise he is “like a hamster running on a treadmill.” “It helps make the students feel a bit more energetic knowing that their teachers look and feel confident in class.” said Arambula. Gerardo Flores, English teacher, explained why he joined the Losers Club. “I joined the Losers Club because I was simply tired of being a winner,” said Flores, “I’m hoping for great results, to basically feel more energetic, healthier, and more active,” he said. “I’ve started to eat plenty of fruits and vegetables, and I’ve begun to exercise by doing sit-ups, walking, and push-ups with my baby boy Ethan on my shoulders,” added Flores.

Online dating does not seem popular with students Have you ever gone out on a date with someone you met on the Internet? Explain. Yes, I met him on MySpace and he turned out to be an awesome guy. – C.M. Yes, I knew him for only a few weeks but I was convinced I would have a great time with him. We set up a date and picked a movie to watch. When he arrived at my house to pick me up my mother commented something about his appearance. I had never seen him before not even in pictures. He wasn’t attractive. Or, at least, he did not attract me. From the moment I sat in his beat-up SUV until we found our way into the movie theatre, I was extremely uncomfortable. I wanted so badly to leave. I messaged my best friend telling her how shallow I felt. Before the movie ended I excused myself to the bathroom but stayed in the hallway where I called my friend to tell him I couldn’t go to his performance after all. On my way back I decided to call him back. I barely knew my friend but I never hesitated to ask if he would come pick me up. When the end of the movie came we had talked about what

We talked but not as much. After that we agreed that things would be better if we just stayed friends. – E.L.H. Students reveal their most embarrassing dates What has been your most embarrassing date yet? My boyfriend and I had gone to the movies with some of our friends. I bought the tickets, and didn’t notice that I had gotten a ticket for a different movie. After watching a movie with my boyfriend, it was barely our second date. We were making out, outside the movie theater, and my dad got there and caught us. My most embarrassing date was back in middle school. My eighth grade year, I met this cute boy and we went to the movies. I love Dr. Pepper and he bought me one. We were playing around and I spilled it on my lap so I walked around looking like I peed my pants. – Erika Sanchez I went to the movies on a date and afterwards my date and I kissed in the lobby, right when I kissed my date I heard my name being called in an angry voice. It turned out that my mom was right there and she saw the whole thing happen. That has been my most embarrassing date yet. –Hector Perales When I was at Johnny Carino’s and my utensils fell on the floor in front of him. – L.G. I was at my house and I was going to take her out to dinner and the car didn’t want to start, but luckily I had the other car there so, everything worked out. I was very lucky that night. I went to the movies with Munster and I kept stuttering and after we went to eat and I kept spilling everything on me because I was so nervous. Feelings can be expressed in many different ways How do you show your feelings towards the person that you like? By telling them I love them everyday, and by being by their side all the time. — C.M. Well, it depends on the person, like to my best friend I am really mean because I don’t know how to act around him. To any other guy, I guess it’s by the way I laugh and talk. You can really tell when I like someone. Well, I don’t usually show my feelings towards the guys that I like. — Franchesca Hernandez When you feel in love you want to fly. You feel that the world is so big when you two are apart. When you see him you fell you want to fly and even though you know he/she loves you, the sensation of them telling you that they love you is so beautiful that sometimes you just want to cry. So the only way to show feeling to this person is loving them back. — R.L Tell her straight up with respect and love. — David Ramos I’m nice, funny, romantic, lovable and i show them that i do care for them. -Alicia Vasquez I am always showing that i care and i am always there when they need me. — Anna S. I take care of him a lot and i also tell him in his face. — Yvonne G. I show my feelings by being sweet, nice to them, and I’m usually shy

Well, in some cases when I really like around them at first. — R.F. I usually fight with them at first and a girl, I’m really shy. If i am not shy I’m continue to fight for a while then I start all over her like a fat kid on cake. — Hector Perales. showing my true feelings. — Well, just being there for Hector Santos him and letting him know I usually show feelings that I’m there right by toward the person I his side. — like by being nice to Samantha Mancha them and putting a I get really shy big smile on my around them. — face every time I Delia Talamantes see that person. I try really hard to impress him. — Thelma By being the way I always am. Never pretend to be someone else because eventually they’ll find out. — Jessica C. Tell them in notes or on the phone. If they’re lucky, I'll tell them in person. — Nick Writing my feelings to him through a love note.. — Angie I show affection. — B.F. After they show theirs. Sometimes not at all. — Robert B. I never really pay attention to that. — Rosa C. Mainly I stare at them when there not looking. Everyone has different opinions on Valentine’s Day What is your opinion of Valentine’s Day? At first I thought it was bull, but this year im anxious for it to get here. — C.M. Well, out of all my Valentine’s days, I’ve never had a boyfriend, so I am really expecting this to change, but I think it’s the best day to show your love to the person you like. Well, I think its nice only if you have someone to spend it with, but friends are better. — Francesca Hernandez My opinion on Valentine's day is that it’s a wonderful day to express one’s feelings toward another and to show them how much you really care for him or her. it’s a day to be with that special someone expressing how much you really love them. Get to be real romantic with my girl. — David Ramos It’s a special day to show people that you care about them. — Alicia Vasquez It’s the day when you show your spe-

cial person you love her/him. — Anna S. It’s a very romantic day and you should be with your love one. — Yvonne Valentine’s Day is awesome if you have a boyfriend. If you don’t have one it’s just a day you pig out with chocolates and candy. — C.R.P Valentine’s Day is sad when you love somebody and he/she has a boyfriend/girlfriend or doesn’t like you. But it’s happy when you give love and you receive love. — Rafael Lopez Valentine’s day is great. I love this day because you just see everyone happy, and who knows maybe on this special day one of us will get to feel that wonderful feeling that couples get when this love day comes around. I think Valentine’s Day is something very pretty. Especially when you’re with the person you love. — V.M. I think Valentine’s Day is very special, and I don’t think I’m the only one

who enjoys this day. I mean, just imagining somebody may be thinking about you, it’s just a wonderful feeling you get. I think it’s great that we get to dedicate one day to love every year. I think Valentine’s Day is a very special day to show your loved one how much you care. -Erika Sanchez I think its cute!!=) — V.C. My opinion on Valentine’s Day are mostly about love. Valentine’s Day is mostly about telling the person you love how you feel about them & giving them gifts & other stuff. — Hector Perales It’s a day that can be someone’s most memorable day or their worst. — Samantha Mancha Valentine’s Day is completely overrated. I think a sappy chick made it up just to get another gift for the year. You should tell someone you love them everyday and show it to them, not just on this one day. — Delia Talamantes I think that it’s a really nice holiday because anyone can either express how

they feel about someone or just show a friend that they care. — Ivan Valdez I think it’s cool to a certain extent. I mean why just one day of showing affection? Why not everyday? — Claire To me, it’s a day of friendship and love... But the real secret is receiving all the delicious CHOCOLATE! Gotta love the chocolates and candy! (You know I’m right... :) ) — Juan Olivares I like it because that’s when most guys/girls express their true feelings to the person they love/like. — Ofelia A day to go out to the movies. — Gus A day to spend with your love and going out somewhere nice. — Monica L. Going out with the one you love. — Jorge I dunno. — Daniela B. Valentines Day is a day to spend with that special someone. It is a day to show how much you love someone. — Thelma It’s a day to thank your friends for K

he MySpace Web site has become popular all over the world. In Laredo it also seems very big among teens, according to a Magnet Tribune survey administered to 199 Vidal M. Treviño students in January. The survey was designed by fifth block journalism students. These students surveyed were from the morning and afternoon classes of Alejandra Rodriguez, music; Matias Arambula, social studies; James Buckley, English; Diana Martinez, English; Mark Webber, journalism; and Lilly Castillo, creative writing. Of the 199 surveyed 128 have a MySpace site, according to the survey. MySpace allows users to have their own personal “space” which allows other users to see their profile. It explains one’s life and interests. According to Biography.com, in 2003, Tom Anderson and some computer programmers set up the first pages of MySpace, which was designed to connect musicians and bands with their fans, allowing them to share their music online. In addition to individuals using the site, many companies use MySpace to promote their models, artists, movies and political campaigns. There is a lot more to MySpace than just putting layouts, writing about oneself and decorating a page. MySpace gives users the opportunity

to show personality and to meet people from all over the world. One user felt MySpace is useful to connect with others. “MySpace is a place for friends not strangers,” said a female sophomore. Some highlights of the survey Out of the 128 VMT students that say they have MySpace: • 52 (41 percent) actually know 150 friends, • 41 (32 percent) actually know 50100 friends, • 22 (17 percent) actually know 100-150 friends, • 6 (5 percent) actually know 150200 friends, • 7 (5 percent) actually know 200plus friends, Most of the students that use MySpace learned about it from: • A friend, 96 (75 percent) • A relative, 15 (12 percent) • The Internet, 14 (11 percent) • Television, 2 (1 percent) • Magazine/newspaper, none, and • Other, 1 (1 percent) “I just think its great to be in my own world,” said a male freshman. On the other hand, MySpace has been perceived as a threat to parents and to teens. “MySpace has been the cause of many underage assaults,” said a female senior who added there has been much controversy about the site. “I don’t think MySpace should be held responsible for whatever happens outside the web page,” added a female sophomore.

Female sophomore: “I think MySpace shouldn’t be blamed for anything, and parents should be more responsible.”

Male sophomore “It’s a great way to keep in touch with long distance friends since I move a lot.”

MEMORIAL, from page 1 office to work on the bust. One day he asked, ‘Armando, do you like your job, like VMT?’” “Yes sir, I love it,” Hinojosa said. “Do you really love it?” Treviño asked. “Would you like my job?” “What?” Hinojosa asked. “Superintendent. Would you like to be superintendent?” Treviño asked. “No sir. I can’t be a superintendent,” Hinojosa responded. “Well, I tell you what,” Treviño said. “I’ll trade my job for your yours. I love art. But I can’t paint. I can’t sculpt. I can sing a little bit. I can dance a little bit. I can play a little bit, but I envy all you artists. I envy you. I wish I could be like you.” Hinojosa said the point of his story was that Treviño was “so humble, he showed his humility. So, he really loved the arts.” Fernando Cruz, director of Federal Programs, then gave an emotional talk

about his relationship with Treviño. Cristina Navarro, freshman creative writing student, read a poem called “Mr. Vidal M. Treviño's Dream,” written by Christine Rojas, junior creative writing student. It was dedicated to Treviño. Recalling their memories of Treviño were faculty members Robert Lopez, Lilia Castillo, Alejandra Rodriguez, Vernon Carroll, substitute teacher Cesar Salazar, and custodian Alicia Gonzalez. Each student who earlier received either a pink or a red rose then walked up to a row of glass vases on the Force of Creation pedestal and placed their rose in one. A few students reacted as they placed their roses in a vase. Then a moment of silence occurred. As students and staff bowed their heads, Robert Lopez, brass instructor, performed Taps. After Taps, students, staff, and district personnel were dismissed.

Even though many of the students never knew Treviño, they were grateful for the things he did for the district. “Sadly I never knew him or met him, but I had been told he was a great man,” Andy Flores, senior. “I knew he was old, and probably tired. He needed his rest after founding our school,” said Flores. “He left his

mark on this city and he will still live on through our school.” Alyssa Garza, junior, said that it’s truly a tragedy that he died. “He was so dedicated to his goal of making this fine arts school and because of him I go to a school that lets me express myself creatively,” said Garza. “It was really sad because he was so awesome.” Nick Lopez, junior, said he feels sad, but he thanks God that he blessed students with this school. “May he rest in peace,” said Lopez.

Dysfunctional siblings stagger along towards big inheritance Bookworm by

Cassandra Perez The After Life is based around a guy named Will Shepherd who’s going through some tough things in his life. Will, a New York City 19year-old living with his artsy mother, knows of his biological father but has never met him. His father left him and his mother when he was 9 months old and whom the man barely acknowledges. The way this book opens is really well written. It’s Will’s application to a prep school for the over privileged. While attending the school, Will meets his half siblings, Liz

Kyle, and then gets an invite to a party at their Upper East Side apartment. Will doesn’t really know what EHRENHAFT to expect when he gets there. He’s shocked to learn that his dad is a filthy-rich aging hippie addicted to alcohol and cocaine and that his new wife performs Wiccan rituals. This is something that Will didn’t really expect from his father.

The following morning, a hung-over Will is dumfounded when his stepsister informs him of his father’s heart attack and death. After an alcohol-soaked funeral in Florida, he and his half siblings find themselves in a Florida law office watching a DVD. In it, their father not only comically announces, “I’m dead,” but also tells Will he can have $2 million, much less than the twins inherit, if h e can drive the man’s Volvo from Miami to New York City in 48 hours. As the siblings embark on this bizarre road trip, each one of them works through tricky feelings towards their friends and each other through three alternating points of view which shapes the bulk of this narrative. Academy Award winner Swank is teacher in ‘Freedom Writers’ Two-time Academy Award winner Hilary Swank got her first Academy Award for the true-life story “Boys Don’t Cry.” Now she plays the part of Erin Gruwell, a teacher who changes the lives of many teenagers in the 2007 film, “Freedom Writers.” “Freedom Writers” is based on a true story about how Long Beach teenagers have to struggle to survive everyday life. Students at Wilson High School live their lives in fear because at any time of the day they can get shot and killed for uncontrollable things such as their race. New teacher Gruwell is determined to change her students into well-educated teenagers. Gruwell assigns her students to read books by people their own age who are struggling to live and are living in war zones. The students started to read the book “The Diary of Anne Frank.” The book inspired them to learn more about the

holocaust. Gruwell then took the class to a field trip to a museum where they learned more about the people who died. They then begin to start keeping their own diaries about what goes on in their personal life and how it affects them. Gruwell tells them that they do not have to let her read them SWANK but if they don’t mind, to put them in a cabinet in the back of the classroom that will be sealed with a lock. To Gruwell’s surprise, almost every one of her students leaves their diaries in the cabinet. “A couple days ago one of my friends was laid to rest. His funeral was just like any other. Family members were crying. His friends were swearing they

Erika Hernandez and Jacklyn Martinez would get revenge,” that was one entry a student wrote in a diary. Gruwell was extremely surprised at what these teenagers had to go through everyday. She had no idea that these kids were living in a war zone. Gruwell would then have them play little games to get to know them a little better. One of these games was called the “Line Game,” the students would be asked questions such as, “Have you ever been shot at?” and if the questions applied to them they would have to stand on the line. As each stood on the line, they would see how much they had in common. Slowly the teenagers started adjusting to each other and started becoming friends. The students eventually learned to love and respect Gruwell. They felt as if

they were home every time they would step into her classroom. The classroom was the only place where the students felt safe from the outside world. The teenagers didn’t want the year to end. They were in their sophomore year and Gruwell had just finished explaining to them that this would be their last year together because she did not have enough experience as a teacher to teach juniors and seniors. The students were furious! Some threatened to drop out because the only reason they even went to school was because of Gruwell. She went to the school board to see if she can stay teaching them all the way through high school. It’s up to you to watch the movie to find out the results of Gruwell’s trip to the school board.

People Couple says they are not the perfect duo The Magnet Tribune February 23, 2007

Since this is a Valentine’s issue I interviewed a couple. They are Joaquin Zapico and Alejandra Jasso, seniors at J.W Nixon High School. They both take guitar in the afternoon with Nino Palacios. I asked Jasso how Zapico asked her out. “I remember going to the store and I saw someone after me. I turned around and then he turned back. When I came back from the store he asked me out. He seemed scared and nervous but I just laughed and said OK.” Jasso and Zapico have been together for almost three years. They started going out on February 26, 2004, when they

We’re not perfect,” said Zapico. “We have our fights and are just like any other couple,” said Jasso. I asked them if they still go out on dates. “Sometimes,” said Zapico. “When the check comes in

Alejandra previously worked at Toys ‘R’ Us as a cashier, but she only worked there for about two months. I also asked them what it is that they liked about each other.

“I like that he makes me laugh. He also makes me mad, but that’s not what I like about him,” said Jasso. “I also like it when she makes me laugh, especially when she does dumb things,” said Zapico. I also asked them to point out things that they can’t stand about each other. “I hate it when he doesn’t pay attention to me when I’m talking and when he falls asleep on the phone,” said Jasso. Zapico said, “I don’t like it when she blames me for things that are her fault.” To finish I asked them if there were any remarks that they would like to include.

Males and females have different opinions on what love is Female’s view

People have different thoughts, opinions, and ideas about love. Some of them change with age, personality, or experiences. Teens tend to fall in love more easily than older people. We tend to confuse our feelings with love. I think that’s part of growing up and gaining maturity. On occasion people say they’re in love but actually they’re in love with the idea of being in love, not really with the person. We as teens love the idea of daydreaming and thinking of a certain person. Unfortunately, we also suffer from bad experiences or sometimes things don’t turn out the way we wish. But the good thing is that because we are young we can get over it and start anew. 1 Corinthians 13: 4-8 states “Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not

It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails.” I think this verse from the Bible defines the true meaning of love. “Love is a deep tenderness, affection, and desire you have towards someone,” Ashley Reilly, junior, said. “Something two people can share mutually and know exactly what the other one is thinking or feeling. Love is something you can trust someone with, with no doubt anything could go wrong.” Senior Jessica Garza, mentioned love is “when you get past the stage of infatuation.”

rather keep our thoughts to ourselves. But I know guys some who are willing to give insight on guys by answering some of the following questions. Question 1: “What does love mean to you?” “Two people who care about each other and will most likely spend the rest of their lives together,” explained Jose Hernandez.

Sophomore Azahy Ayala, argued love is “when you truly care for someone for who they are, when you are willing to risk it all for him.” “Love to me is a very special feeling that you feel about someone,”said senior Denise Solis. “When you see that person you get butterflies in your tummy and start to blush. He should bring you happiness, and when you feel blue he should be the one to cheer you up,”added Solis. Girls often seek for similar qualities in a relationship. For example, Reilly thought, “I look for trust, compassion, humor, and attraction. People say looks don’t matter but there has to be an attraction to one another somewhere.” Ayala added, “Honesty, respect, love,

A second had a slightly different take on love. “Sharing feelings with the girl you like by expressing your emotions,” explained Ivan Fuentes. happiness, and common interests.” Garza said, “Someone who is caring and puts me before him.” Solis thought, “Someone trust-worthy, respectful, someone that can show you how to have an awesome time” Some of us are not into the romanticism thing but others are. For example when asked what’s the most romantic thing you would like for a guy to do for you Reilly answered, “The most romantic thing would have to be, one guy that will fly you in a plane over the city, and have certain city lights turn off that would spell out ‘WILL YOU MARRY ME?’ I don’t think any girl would say “NO” to a proposal like that.” Garza responded, “Cook me a dinner with candles and roses.” Solis added, “A surprise picnic dinner under the stars with rose peddles all around and a big monkey teddy bear that says ‘Our First Valentine’s Day, with a dozen roses.” Love is a very broad topic that we will never finish discussing. But I think love is what you want it to be. It all depends at the angle which you look at it.

comes out in a relationship,” said Erin Perez. The third question: “What’s more important, looks or personality?” Nick Lopez said, “It’s 50/50 for me.” Edwin Torres explained, “personality because that’s what’s important, and that’s what defines them.” Last question: “How seriously do you take your partner?”

“It’s pretty serious, its important, a big priority. It matters more than a lot of things. It is the key element of happiness,” Perez explained. Guys are not really that hard to understand even though we try to appear tough. We are all really just looking for that special someone, and the one relationship that will make us happy for the rest of the lives.

Experiences 20 Softball coach at Nixon High inspires players The Magnet Tribune February 23, 2007

There is much about the Super Bowl, Pro Bowl, NBA All Star game, and NCAA March Madness, but this story is different. It’s about a coach, a very good friend of mine whom I respect and has made teams into champions. His name is Alex Colin. Coach Colin is the offensive coordinator for the Nixon football team and the head coach of the Nixon softball team. During all my high school years I haven’t found a person that has really given everything for the love of his team. Colin was the head coach of the United softball team in 1999-2000 when he first got to Laredo; Colin’s softball squad finished district runner-ups and made the playoffs both seasons. In 2001 he became quarter-

Since then he has taken the Nixon Lady Mustangs team to playoffs four out of five seasons with three consecutive 20-plus win seasons and winning over 100 games. “What has made this program successful has been the commitment of the players, parents and coaches,” Colin said. Coach Colin’s ‘Stangs are always a candidate for playoffs in search for district and state championships. “I expect great things from

Bad weather should not have caused district to close Students should not have to make up the two days of school missed because of the threat of sleet that never occurred. The district closed on Jan. 16 and 17 due to threatening weather that included a predication of sleet. However, the two days were dry and no sleet fell. In addition to LISD, United ISD,

EDITORIAL The Magnet Tribune believes the two days the district closed due to the threat of sleet should not have to be made up. LCC, TAMIU, and St. Augustine

High School closed. Our district has announced make up days of Feb. 16 and May 31. We believe this is unfair. Even though bad weather was forecast, the worst that happened was very cold air, not a good reason to close the district. The schools are well heated and students and staff would have been protected

from the weather during the school day. Neither TAMIU nor LCC are making up the two days. While it’s tough to second-guess the weather, looking back we should have stayed in class. Since we were not in class then the district should consider the days as lost and move on.

Death of school founder Vidal M. Treviño affects teachers The new year 2007 has brought many good things along the way but unfortunately, not everything the year has brought has been good. In January, the founder of the school passed away leaving behind the school and his loved ones. This leaves one question to ask the teachers of V.M.T.: What was your reaction to Mr. Treviño’s death? Do you think it will have any effect and change any traditions in the school? “I know he affected much of Laredo. I realize that an icon of Laredo is gone & a significant chapter in Laredo’s History is permanently closed. Even if it was his BUCKLEY time I’m sorry for his death,” James Buckley, English I.

A Penny for your Thoughts by

Christian Sanchez “Mr. Treviño’s death filled me with sadness and joy. Sadness because he will no longer be among us; and joy because I work at VMT and I can contribute to his vision and help to keep his legacy alive. Mr. Treviño was an extraordinary man of great visions and wisdom who always expressed his concern for creating knowledgeable well-rounded stuMARTINEZ dents. It is because of his commitment to provide students a quality education that, we, the faculty and staff of VMT should assure that we meet that standard in all our endeavors. This school was his dream and reality; the students currently enrolled at our school and those to come should know about Mr. Treviño and his vision. I believe his death has served to remind us of his role in this school, thus cementing our commitment to the mission of VMT. I think new traditions will be create in his honor to show acknowledgement, appreciation, and admiration,” Diana Martinez, English IV teacher.

“I was shocked and saddened to hear of Mr. Treviño’s death. Although he had been ill for quite some time, one still hoped that the inevitable would not come. I don’t think that Mr. Treviño's death will change any of the school’s traditions. More than FLORES ever, we all have a tremendous responsibility to preserve Mr. Treviño’s legacy and uphold the vision he had for the students that attend V.M.T.” Gerardo Flores, English III teacher.

"I think we may add an observance every year to celebrate his life or maybe the anniversary of his death. I was shocked to find out Mr. Treviño died. Mr. Cerda called me and told me about his death," Mark Webber, journalism instructor.

Students would look sharp if uniforms were mandatory As many as you all know the United Independent School District has decided to make many elementary schools “real clothes free,” as my younger cousin says — in other words the elementary schools in UISD are now wearing UNIFORMS!! If you ask me I think that is so cool, but for other people that is torture. I personally would love it if the school board would make high school students wear uniforms. That would be flippin sweet! You’re probably thinking, “what the heck is wrong with her, UNIFORMS at our school? I don’t think so. If you want to know what I think, then I say we should wear them.

Observations by

Kimberly Evans You may think it’s kind of dorky but I got excited about uniforms when I saw the Harry Potter movie for the first time. At first I thought it was pretty weird, but if you think about it, it actually makes the school more prestigious and it also makes the students look more studious. If you have watched the third and fourth Harry Potter films you can see that since the students live and go to school at Hogwarts they are allowed to

wear “real clothes” once school is finished, or when they are done with their classes for the day. I would relate that to our real world, and that is why I don’t believe that wearing uniforms is much of a problem. I really don’t know why I enjoy the idea of wearing uniforms. I am just fascinated by them. I always imagined being in a high society school where all the girls wear school skirts, with tights, black shiny shoes,

with a blouse, tie, and all cool with the school symbol. The same goes for the guys as well. I imagined the school being called something like Charles Williams Academy of Fine Arts or King Williams School for Fine Arts. Something that sounds super cool, and all the cool kids would go there. OK, I should breathe for a moment. I’m getting to into this, but anyways, if we had a vote for uniforms at our school I would totally vote yes because I would love it. Like I said, the students would look 100 percent better than we do now. Some students show up to school with their baggy pants falling down, baggy shirts, and t-shirts that have uncomfort-

able messages on them. It’s very inappropriate. If the school were to have uniforms and look more presentable many people would think that we have a bright future ahead of us, or that we are serious about learning, going to school, and the cool part would be that after school we would be able to change into the clothes that we feel comfortable with. I would love uniforms at my school because there are many students that really don’t know how to dress. In other words, you can dress the way you want. You don’t have to dress to my pleasing, but I mean dress presentable, please.

Opinions 23 You cannot know love until you’ve tried it The Magnet Tribune February 23, 2007

Emotion is a weapon that the weak shrink from. To give unabashedly and lay your heart out on the table is to say; “Here take it” — and if you do so you shall feel the heights of joy, but you shall risk the depths of despair — dare you take it? Dare you touch something that has so great potential for both destruction and elation or do you run? Do you hide, do you build walls around yourself, and do you shrink from love and slink away, justifying the fact that you know love because you have been burnt by it before? Do you explain to yourself and anyone who will lend an open ear that love is pain, and only strong can

resist the pain that love brings. Only the strong defend themselves from the imminent internal death that giving emotion unabashedly may very well bring, and often does. Is it possible that those who recite this familiar defense against love are merely pretending they are strong by building emotional walls around themselves? Are they actually weak in disguise? Bravery is not displayed behind the walls of a fortress, emotional or otherwise. No knight in shining armor ever hides behind the castle walls claiming he knows all the world of pain. Who needs love? We’ve got here and now, and that’s

enough, right? It’s beginning to seem as if most of us simply give up hope, the childish concept that is usually cast aside by the age of 25 for the real world, and instead we hide our emotions away deep inside ourselves. We then guard our hidden emotions with witty sayings and justifications about why they are so foul. We convince ourselves thoroughly that love will hurt us, but we are smart: We will out-smart love by never feeling it. Then one day we accidentally get too close to someone, and as soon as mutual emotions begin to brim near the surface we immediately run. We steep ourselves in these

We forget the reasons but retain their implications, leaving ourselves to simply regard our former love with slight regret and disclaim: Yet the reality behind the failed relationship is that all along we were running from fear lodged deep within ourselves. So it seems this game of love gives us two options: On one hand we can risk it, we can face love and pain and take

Finally, we have a diverse field of candidates Finally, for the first time ever we see a woman AND an African American in the race for the next President of the United States. They are Senator Hillary Clinton (D – NY) and Senator Barack Obama (D – IL). Now that is a big deal for this country. I think this is great for our society. It’s a change that I think people are ready to see. It’s definitely a big step for our country. It’s about time we break these barriers. Women have come a long way since we got the right to vote through the Nineteenth Amendment in 1920. Society has just accepted women to having bigger roles in society, other than just housewives. When I heard that Obama, an African-American, had announced he was launching a presidential exploratory committee I was surprised. Not that I didn’t think that he

can run our country, but it hit me unexpectedly. As for Clinton I’ve had my eye on her for a while. I think either candiCLINTON date will do a great job running our country. On the other hand I think people should really learn more about all the candidates before voting. People shouldn’t vote for Clinton just

because she’s a woman. And p e o p l e shouldn’t vote for Obama just because he’s an AfricanAmerican. OBAMA I really try to keep up with what’s going on around the world. We obviously all know about the war in Iraq. We need to get our troops out of there and spend our money on more important things.

Things that are going on in our own country. That should be and apparently is the number one priority for both parties. It’s crazy that they want to send more troops to Iraq. Everyday more and more soldiers lose their lives. It’s ridiculous. This country is definitely ready to see some changes. Clinton stated that if Congress doesn’t end the war before January 2009, she will do so as president. Obama is also against the Iraq war. In a recent speech he said, “It is time to give Iraqis their country back, and it is time to refocus America’s efforts on the wider struggle yet to be won.” I’m really hoping that Clinton and Obama eventually become candidates for the presidency. I truly believe that this country is ready for a woman or African-American president.

She is a music student and plays the saxophone with woodwinds instructor Melissa Hinojosa and also sings with music instructor Alejandra Rodriguez. Rivera is also in the J.W. Nixon Band. Among the awards she has received this year are AllRegion, Ford Motors 12th annual Mariachi Vargas, best in the U.S. Mariachi Vocalist, finalist in the International Latino Arts Festival, and Choir Region. She described her feelings about what she has accomplished. “I’m really proud and excited about my achievements in

Music has been part of her life for a long time. All of her family plays instruments. Rivera considers music be to a part of her. “I prefer singing because I’ve been doing it all my life,” she said.

All-Stater practices hard to succeed BY IRMA HERNANDEZ MT STAFF WRITER Does anybody really know how hard yet how rewarding it is to make the All State Band? This year only one student from V.M.T. does. Josh Ramirez is a senior who also attends Cigarroa, and is one of three from Laredo who made the All-State Band. He has been playing the trombone since he entered the band program at Cigarroa Middle School. The process is that TMEA chooses four trombone players, for All-State while 23 trombones audition. Ramirez admitted there was a lot of pressure coming from everyone. “I could tell people doubted me; they had doubts about me and thought I was just a big

joke. Mostly the pressure came from people who attend United Independent School District,” Ramirez said. Anyone would have been nervous competing with people not only from Laredo but from other cities. So Ramirez said the pressure was there. He said the most difficult part of the competition was the practices. “It was not all about the practices. I had to work on many details which judges critique a lot on,” he said. Ramirez had to practice almost every day to be prepared for competition. “I had to practice my music a lot. There were three Etudes that were each a page long, and every measure was crucial,” he said Even though the competition was hard Ramirez said
