tudents from Dual Enrollment did really well in their Government 2305 course in the fall semester. “Everybody passed. They all got As and Bs,” said AP Government/Economics instructor and Dual Enrollment supervisor Matt Arambula. “This is the largest cohort that has passed with grades this high at VMT.” One of the students felt she did well. “I believed that even though I had a hard time memorizing events, I did pretty well,” said Vanessa Camacho, a steel drums student. Another one pointed out what’s needed to do well. “If you do not enjoy listening to lectures, it’s about time you start enjoying them because most of the college courses in Dual Enrollment are all about reading, listening, and writing,” said Kassandra Rico, who warned people who haven’t taken a sophomore college class yet. Her fine arts area is journalism/online media. Earlier in the semester students discussed the challenges in the class. “There was more pressure in the way that the professor expected us to read and do the work that we were expected to do,” Camacho said. Camacho said she was not a fan of the class. Other students like Tatiana Garcia only enjoyed the experience of the college feel but disliked the course. “Our professor usually assigned essays and tests upon the chapters we reviewed,” Garcia said, whose fine art is high brass studies. According to Camacho, “he (professor) presented the lessons in a PowerPoint and gave real life examples.” Earlier in the semester Camacho thought she wasn’t doing well in class. “I wanted to believe I was doing well, but I wasn’t too positive,” Camacho said. But Garcia thought she was doing well. One of the students sees a “benefit” in taking the class. “This course will benefit me in the future by allowing me to get ahead in my college credits,” Rico said. Garcia agreed. “I felt this class will improve my understanding of government, since I’m not the biggest fan of the subject,” she said. Camacho thought it wouldn’t help her because she said she does not need this course for her major. However, six hours of government, or two classes, is a requirement for college degrees. The students told Arambula that the topics were interesting but sometimes felt the class was slow moving. “This was the first actual college class where the students had to read chapters,” See COLLEGE, page 2

Hispanic festival ‘biggest’ due to move Civic Center is scene for event By Brandon Gamez MT staff writer

A

group of women performing with castanets got this year’s Hispanic Heritage Festival off to an exciting start. The yearly event allowed the community to experience Hispanic heritage with music and performances on Oct. 30 at the district’s newly purchased civic center. The previous events were held at Saint Peter’s Plaza. “This is the best festival we had so far, which was the biggest, and we had the first competition of mariachi,” Dr. Martha Villarreal, school director, said. She said the students reacted favorably towards the event at the civic center. “Those that are here have told me that it was the best they had,” she said. “And as more people come down to visit they will be pleasantly surprised.” She said this year’s fair was bigger than it was in the past. “There were more people, even more performances, more room, more space,” she said. This festival had a lot of work put into it, according to festival organizer Gilberto Rocha, Visual Arts department head. Transportation, reserving the location, and peoples’ needs went into figuring out how everything would fall into place in order to make this even more successful, he said.

Online: More photos, video, audio: http://magnettribune.org/?p=1468 He said there was a lot of planning from the collaboration of the teachers and staff. “Setting the date for the Hispanic festival, making sure that a lot of things coincided, that everything would come together on that particular date,” Rocha said. He said there is a lot more to think about for next year. “There is a lot of potential to expand. The grounds of the civic center are way bigger. Definitely we could use more parent help, more volunteers,” Rocha said. Many visitors seemed to enjoy the taste of heritage with the musical and dance performances. Music, Dance, and Theater students performed 55 songs, dances, and readings, according to

the program. Students volunteered to help at booths to raise funds for their fine art or communication area. The festival started off with the speech given by Villarreal, then a genealogy society presentation, followed by a performance by Altagracia Azios, See FESTIVAL, page 10

System contacts parents using computer, phones Kyle Rios MT staff writer A system that can contact all parents simultaneously is now in use. Attendance clerk Laura Rios discussed how she uses School Messenger System. “It’s a system in which a message from the school goes in as a telephone message to all VMT parents,” she said. Rios discussed why the school uses the system. “We bought the system to be able to contact all the students’ parents about important events,” she said. “I put the date and time of an important event and then

the district gets the message. Then the principal has to approve it. Afterwards it comes back to me and then I can finally send it out.” She enters the message into the system’s website. The system then contacts parents of VMT students at once. Parents receive the message immediately. “It is definitely a better way to contact the parents of all the students,” she said. Reaction from people who have received messages from the system have been positive, she said. Rios said she thinks students should receive messages also, and that they should be able to add their message to it.

COLLEGE, from page 1 Arambula said. Even though they all passed, Arambula thought this course was different because if the students didn’t keep up with their reading they would fall behind.

Unlike most students, Arambula liked this course. “I love government; it’s what I majored in. What I like about it is that it’s always changing,” he said. Arambula thinks that this course

will help the students when they enroll in college next year. “They’ll already have college credit in federal government, and it will give them an idea of what a ‘reading’ class is about,” he said.

Their next Dual Enrollment class will be College Algebra, in the spring semester. “It’s mostly a review from everything they’ve learned in their Algebra classes,” Arambula said.

By Delilah Gonzalez MT staff writer The school’s new Pre-AP World Geography instructor is not only passionate about football, but also plays professionally. Abasi Thomas, who played for the Rattlesnakes, said he played since he was a child. ‘’I’ve loved football since I was a little kid. I’ve played football since I was 6 years old,’’ he said. Thomas, who started at VMT in August, said a number former teammates are still in the city. “I keep in touch with a lot of them, but you know some of them still live here in Laredo,’’ Thomas said. What are some challenges of playing football? The challenge of playing football, especially at my age, is taking care of your body,’’ Thomas said. He said teaching is similar to playing football. “You have to be tough to do both of them. You learn a lot of things about yourself,’’ Thomas said. Thomas said he contributed

He said he has considered becoming a high school coach. “I’ve thought about it and I’ve been offered some coaching jobs, but my primary focus is teaching,’’ Thomas said. Thomas said he decided to become a teacher when he was young. “From an early age whatever profession that I choose would be one that helps people, and teaching is the way I can touch people’s lives,’’ Thomas said. He said his teaching philosophy is to connect learning to real life. “Make my subject relatable to the real world. Make students see that what they learn

is relevant to the real world,’’ Thomas explained. Thomas said his greatest strength is being patient. ‘’My greatest strength I would say is my patience. I’m like a monk,’’ Thomas said. His goals as a teacher are to connect to students. “My goals are to continue what I’m doing, to continue to touch people and make connections with the students, basically,’’ Thomas said. Thomas compared teaching at VMT with teaching in his home town, Houston. ‘’There’s a lot fewer discipline problems here at VMT than at my previous school,’’ Thomas said. He said he likes his VMT students. “The kids here are very, very nice and extremely polite,’’ Thomas said.

Photo by Belen Silva Abasi Thomas gestures during a recent sixth period class. In addition to teaching, Thomas is a professional football player. Some students at his previous school caused Thomas some frustration, he explained. ‘’From my previous job, I don’t like to say anything bad about a place, you know, but there were times it would be frustrating when a student didn’t care about his own education,’’ Thomas said. He said he’s met people in Laredo. ‘’Yeah, I made a few friends

here. Most of the time I don’t see anybody. I do know some people. I kinda keep in touch on Facebook and stuff like that,’’ Thomas said. He’s hoping for a long stay in the city and at the school. “I’m very happy to be here at VMT. Kids are great. Staff is great,” Thomas said. “This is a dream place to work and I’m happy to be here. I hope to be here for a long time.’’

Students, staff observe 12th 9/11 ceremony By Victoria Cardenas MT staff writer Principal Dr. Martha Villarreal said “people will always remember 9/11” during the school’s 12th observance of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks at St. Peter’s Plaza, on Sept. 11. “We will forever remember that day when Americans were transfixed to their television sets,” she added. Villarreal thanked law enforcement for their work during 9/11 and afterwards. “For all of you people that make a tremendous difference in the life of every American, we cannot thank you enough,” she said. She then discussed why terrorists attacked the United States “Our way of life rewards hard work and perseverance, and that encourages selflessness and generosity. Our way of life recognizes and respects

Photos, video and audio various opinions in society, and still the right of all to express those opinions,” she said. Laredo Chief of Police Raymond Garner then explained what many first responders think about tragedies. “It’s the day most first responders’ fear. It’s the day the most first responders don’t come home. But on that particular day it’s the day that we felt loss,” he said. Border Patrol Chief Robert Harris then thanked soldiers for their work.

Rain moves 16 de sep to recital hall

Arlen Barba MT staff writer “Today we are here to celebrate Mexican Independence,” Social Studies instructor Gregorio Garza said as the 16 de septiembre celebration began Sept. 18 in the recital hall due to heavy rain. Sophomores Jaspe Patterson and Annette Palacios began the 16 de Septiembre celebration by reading a Hispanic Heritage proclamation issued by President Barack Obama. Garza welcomed freshmen and new students to VMT as well as new Social Studies teacher Abasi Thomas and library aide George Gloria. Garza explained how “El Mes de la Patria” is dedicated to the Mexican Independence movement, but also because of a famous war/conflict with the United States. 16 de Septiembre has been celebrated at VMT since the first year it opened. “Esta fecha es para celebrar la libertad, la independencia, y sobre todo, nuestra Mexicanidad,” Garza continued. He, music instructor Billy Thatcher, and dance instructor Alicia McKinnis then did the grito. “¡Viva los heroes que nos dieron patria y libertad!” Garza said. “¡Viva!” the crowd replied.

Music students ‘Hangout’ with US Army band

By April Valdez and Esmeralda Martinez MT staff writers

U.S. Army Band members advised SoundTown members on performance techniques through a Google Hangouts online session Oct. 9 in the Recital Hall. The U.S. Army Brass Quintet also took part in a Hangout with students in the Ovation Brass on Oct. 16. “It’s just awesome to listen to worldclass musicians from all over the world that are actually playing with this group in D.C. So, we’re getting some of the best instruction you could possibly get,” John Reimund, low brass instructor and Ovation Brass director, said. He helped with the effort to connect Google Hangouts to VMT. Sergeant First Class Todd Harrison and Sergeant First Class Albert Sanchez of “Son Tropical” and the U.S. Army Band discussed authentic Latin sound techniques. SoundTown first performed “Manteca” by Dizzie Gilespie and received feedback from Harrison and Sanchez. “They had a lot of knowledge to offer,” stated Robert Lopez, high brass instructor and SoundTown director. The soldiers’ suggestions were varied. “A conga player is always needed to fill out that sound of a traditional Latin band,” Harrison explained to students. “Groups need the distinctive sound

Photos, video and audio of the conga, which also gives you the time,” Sanchez added while discussing rhythms and the feel of the music. Lopez explained what students were learning. “They’re going to learn how to incorporate Latin rhythms into the music that SoundTown’s playing, in a very authentic style, and of course that makes for a better performance,” Lopez said. “Los Años que Me Quedan” by Gloria Estefan was performed next and sung by senior Luz Romero. Sergeants Harrison and Sanchez commented on the performance by Romero. Lopez was pleased by what students were exposed to. “It was just a beautiful experience for everybody involved. I think they communicated a lot of their techniques to us that we’re going to be able to use and take the band to a new level, a higher level,” Lopez said.

Constitution Day

Photo by William Rodriguez Texas State professor Dr. Ray Niekamp discusses the control room where “Bobcat Update,” a news program is produced, with VMT students.

Pros speak at university event Victoria Cardenas MT staff writer A student filmmaker and advertising executive were feature at VMT’s day at Mass Communication Week at Texas State University in San Marcos, on Oct. 30. The student filmmaker was Sergio Carvajal-Leoni, a Texas State graduate student who is working on a project called “Texas Italian Stories.” He explained the idea behind the project, which features documentaries of descendants of Italians who moved to Texas in the 1800s. He said the project is community based, documents culture and gives people a sense of pride. Carvajal-Leoni compared his project to a wagon wheel, in which many parts of creating and distributing videos is related to a community. He said he seeks ways to ask, “What is the problem,” and then starts “solving the problem.” “When we create media, viewers are not the main customers, businesses are,” Carvajal-Leoni said. The other presenter is a public relations expert who discussed how her company creates relationships between people and businesses. Mily Hernandez, senior vice president of COMSTAT, discusses how her company’s website lovemark.com “tries to have people relate to products and businesses.” She said people are powered by emotions, and COMSTAT tries to take advantage by creating a relationship “between people and products.” She gave as an example of creating this relationship by discussing Toyota cars in Puerto Rico. This was when the company was having problems

with its vehicles in 2010, and the slogan, “Maneja Confiado,” or drive with confidence, was used in television commercials and on social media sites. “The idea is to create a relationship that includes mystery, sensuality and intimacy,” Hernandez said. VMT students in radio-television broadcasting and print journalism/online media were on their 10th Mass Communication Week trip, and also took tours of student media including the University Star newspaper, KTSW-FM and Bobcat Update television. Students started the day with a tour of the brand new Gaillardia Hall, named for the Indian blanket flower that grows in the area. The speaker was Corey Wheeler, residential hall director. The environment for residents includes rooms grouped with their own restroom, and a courtyard for residents only. Maria Bernal, sophomore radio-television student, said she was impressed with how business and communication were related. “Ms. Hernandez not only talked about communications, but she also talked about business,” Bernal said. Bernal said attending Mass Communication Week was “awesome.”

Simple tips for your makeup routine

W

hen going out not only does your clothes have to match and look wonderful, but also your make up. Don’t think that because your face may be flawless that you don’t need any, so that because you think its imperfect you add too much. There is always a necessity for makeup, yet there’s a limit. So next time consider in taking this advice before heading out of the house. Foundation The most common mistake is made when choosing a foundation. A shade can be easily mistake by either a tone to light, a tone to dark, or a tone to orange to what your natural skin tone is. It seems nearly impossible to find the exact tone that matches your skin, yet it’s not really hard as long as you know what to do. Look at your veins. If your veins are green you are a warm, blue means you are cool and a mixture of both makes you more of a neutral. Most brands divide the tones by this. So keep an eye for sections that describe the warm or cool tones. A not so economical way is to buy a tone lighter, a tone darker, and a tone that you might think is best for your color. And why not? You can even Google it. Search the Internet to get examples of shades. Remember don’t trust it a 100 percent but just get an idea of what it may be for next time you go to the drug store. Eyebrows Your eyebrows add shape and extra character to your face and can be the difference between being “hot” or just “another girl.” Keeping them perfect is takes a lot of work, but don’t ignore them. Here are some tips that can help you get that perfect look. Eyebrows should be the

Fashion Hallway By Jessica Arroyo and Elizabeth Flores same color as your natural hair, maybe just one or two tones lighter but no less. It will be best having the end a bit darker than the start of the brow to give it more depth. Choosing a light tone of pencil or powder will be best. The eyebrows should always be thicker at the start and thinner at the end. When you’re filling in your eyebrows with a pencil, do short upward strokes while drawing mini mock hair lines. This will make them look thicker but not too dark or unnatural. Now if you think that in your first try you’ll mess up, our best suggestion will be to go into a professional salon. They will help you, and based on your description they’ll wax or tweeze them. After this you’ll have an idea of how it’s supposed to be and just pluck out the extra growing hairs. Putting makeup in an incorrect lighting It is always best to apply makeup in lighting which you’ll be wearing it. When exposed to a lot of lighting its preferable to keep it natural and use very little makeup. For late night parties use bold and exotic colors that will pop out when the lights are off. When going to a restaurant it will usually have dimly lighting so keeping it to a natural yet bold contrasting color will be fine. When being under incandescent bulbs lighter and bolder tones will be best; however don’t make it tacky, keep the natural colors.

MT photo by Elizabeth Flores Brushes, mascara, and other makeup products can be purchased at many locations. Fluorescent lights are a bit like the incandescent yet it makes the colors look sharp. So it’s better to keep the sheer and natural hues. Don’t emphasize too many features. Only choose one, whether it is your lips, eyes or cheeks, if you decide to try all of the features, then all you’re going to look like a clown. When going to the eyes, keep in mind that long lashes are beautiful and are the main thing to get your eyes big. Just a couple of swipes of the mascara brush will be good. Eyeliner should be dark on top and a bit of lighter on the bottom, giving it an intense eye-opening effect. The best way to make your eyes “stand out” is to use light colored eye shadow. You can also use liquid eyeliner making a thin line along the top eyelid and smudge with fingertips. The line will accentuate your eyes and give them some definition. Now in case you want to go for lips, chose a color that com-

plements the natural shade of your lip and skin tone. Plums, wines, and deep reds flatter a dark skin tone, while light brown, beiges with pink, or orange undertones complement a lighter skin tone. Light and matte shades of flattering colors should be worn to the office. A darker version of a shade you like should be worn for dates or nights out. Lip glosses and lip stains are a great option for daytime. A trick to bring the attention to your cheek is to find a blush color that matches your cheeks when they’re blushed after exercise or being out in the cold. Another trick is to match your lip color. Fair skin looks great in rose, olive in peach & dark skin in apricot or even red. Unnecessary lip liner Don’t exaggerate on the application on lip liner. It prevents the lipstick from bleeding and also helps to keep the lipstick on the lips for a longer time. The main advantage of lip

liner is that it gives the lips a concrete shape, which makes them stand out and look full. However it isn’t a must have. Experimenting may be a good idea before heading out. To start with, make a dot in center of your upper lip as well as lower lip. In the same way, make a few more dots on the entire lips. Start joining the dots one by one, with a firm hand. Continue till the edge of the lips. If you notice any space, fill it with light strokes. You can apply lipstick now. See to it that the lip liner and lipstick look smooth. Not washing everything off After a long day at work or dancing, the last thing on your mind would probably be taking off your make up. That maybe in the morning it will be better. However don’t keep making that mistake. A pure wipe with a wet towel isn’t enough, pores can be clogged and acne may appear. Using water and water soluble cleanser gently wash the eye makeup off. Be gentle in this area, and if the mascara is waterproof try adding a bit of makeup remover. Use warm water, so you won’t irritate your face. Rinse your face complete and make sure to not leave residue behind. Pat carefully your face with a clean towel and apply moisturizer on your face to keep it nice and soft. This is just some advice we have leaned and followed on our daily routine. Hopefully it will help do some changes in your make up adding more perfect to it. As you grow up you’ll notice that they may also be some changes in your color tone and in what you may want to put on your face, however, that’s totally normal, but just don’t forget to follow these tips.

GTA 5 redefines open world gaming

G

rand Theft Auto 5 is known as the bestselling video game in history. Being sold more than 3 million units, making $1 billion in 3 days after its release. It was purchased more than any other game in 2013. Grand Theft Auto 5 offers a lot more than any previous Grand Theft Auto has ever offered, not just by the story line, but the graphics are near realism. The game play itself is typical Grand Theft Auto: free roaming and third-person view. More characters In Grand Theft Auto 5, you can play as three characters, not just one character as the past games would give you. You can switch to any of your choosing at any time (and only if certain missions allow you to switch). The characters are: Michael De Santa/Townley, Franklin Clinton and Trevor Phillips. Michael De Santa/Townley is a professional bank robber. He teamed up with Trevor Phillips (best friend) in the past, but turned his back on Phillips and another part-

Gamebreaker By Robert Alvarez and Chris

ner during a heist. Townley is now raising a family and putting his criminal past behind. Franklin Clinton is a former gang member. His goal now is to leave the gang life and live a wealthy and happy one. He is a character of loyalty. He sticks by his newfound friends and will do whatever is necessary to keep him and friends out of harm. Trevor Phillips is also a professional robber. He teamed

up with Michael in the past for a heist. Unaware of Michael’s betrayal, he believed him to be dead. Trevor’s character is the most favorable of all in the game. Judging by commentaries and statistics, players favor Trevor for being psychotic and his actions to be humorous. Each character has a special ability. –Michael’s ability is being able to slow down time while in a gunfight. –Franklin’s ability is also being able to slow down time while driving, to gain speed and avoid collision. –Trevor’s ability is an assault type. He uses rage to strengthen up his attacks, and for him to take less damage. The game takes place in fictional Los Santos (parodied and resembling Los Angeles). Throughout the map you have gun stores, clothing

character. When customizing your character you’re given the opportunity to choose your heritage by choosing where your character’s grandparents and parents came from to help the player customize a character easily. The map itself dose not compare to the map from Grand Theft Auto 4. The area in Grand Theft Auto 5 in my opinion is five times bigger than the map from Grand Theft Auto 4. The creators have done a magnificent job in creating the landscape. The game doesn’t just have a normal city like any other game but also has a variety of mountains and wide open spaces. Shifting to the columnists: Robert Says: Grand Theft Auto 5 is without a doubt the best I’ve ever played! The graphics and gameplay make it difficult to turn it off and go to bed. I recommend you all to buy yourselves a copy! Chris says: As a gamer, I think this game is worth buying. It’s one of the best Grand Theft Auto games I’ve ever played. I personally am addicted to this game and play it day and night!

This is what Block-B wants you to do: “Crawl out of your boring prison!” This is a night to go crazy and party hard. Shout your freedom to the world and the new rule is “Not to be Calm!” “Rip apart your boring uniform and scream loudly. No one cares about what you do here anyway.” I am assuming that this a cold lady that is always too busy working and being responsible that she is highly stressed out. This song is

Block-B comes back with album

H

ello K-Pop lovers! Guess what? I am happy to inform you that Block-B is back with a new album titled “Very Good.” The band made its comeback and released its mini album on Oct. 3. These guys came back fully recharged, and with new awesome crazy music that you all will probably love. This album contains five songs: one of them instrumental, two ballads, one is a type of rock song and the other has a jazz beat. Here is the track list: 1. Very Good 2. Be the Light 3. Nice Day 4. When, Where, What, How. Jo Hyun Ah 5. Very Good (instrumental) You guys are familiar with the band members, right? Well, for those who don’t know the members here is a little background: –Zico is 21 years old; his position is leader of the group. He is the main rapper and a composer. –U-Kwon is 21 years old; his position in the group is vocalist and lead dancer. –Kyung is 21 years old; his position in the group is lead rapper and composer. –Jaehyo is 23 years old; his position is lead vocalist and is the face of the group. –P.O. is 20 years old; his position in the group is rapper. –B-Bomb is 23 years old; his position in the group is vo-

Hear, Say

By Diana Zamarripa calist and main dancer. –Taeil is 23 years old; his position in the group is main vocalist. “Very Good” This video reminds me of Batman’s “The Dark Knight” movie. They reenacted the scene where the Joker and the other clowns rob the bank. It was not exactly like the movie but somewhat like it. For example, at the beginning it’s raining hard and you just see one of the members waiting for the black van to pick him up. What is also similar is when they crash the van into the bank creating chaos among the people. They come in with their guns and their clown masks ready to blow people away but with music. This video was exciting for me; there were a lot of crazy things going on like the frightening clown masks and all the evil laughing. Block-B is basically talking about them as a group, how they can catch everyone’s attention. They are back and will make you lose your mind. They are kings of the jungle; they will hoist you into the air so roll out the carpet to greet them back. It’s time to break the silence

so come on bring anyone with you and move however you want. Nobody can stop them they want you to stop pretending that your all that because we will unite as one. They want you to make some trouble, creating chaos they tell the bees to buzz louder until the stage falls down. Lift your hands up and burn that passion you have in you. They want to see the crazy side of you and what you are capable of doing. Yeah! So go out there do something out of the ordinary, but do something legal; do not go rob your parent’s bank. “Be the Light” The song is about U-Kwon wanting his love to bloom again and for her love to shine the light upon him. He is trying to get used to the misery he is feeling of not having her. He has no idea where he is he feels lost without her. He lives with useless hope that one day she will turn to him and light up his life again. U-Kwon is desperate when she passes by and knows that she won’t come back to him. Every time she goes by she takes everything away from him, his reasons for living. He wants her to be the sun every morning that shines

upon him and keeps him warm, and then the moon so she could give him romance. He lives in the darkness ever since her departure his heart is dark and black he is frozen and wants to melt with her presence. All he wants is for her to come back to him and lighten his life again. This video probably enraged many fans by the way U-Kwon was getting beaten up by a group of men. That was an unfair fight, four against one and then to top it off U-Kwon doesn’t fight back. At first the four men are coming towards him. U-Kwon seems ready to fight with his fist closed and tightened. When the men got closer UKwon weakened his fist and at the first punch U-Kwon went down to the floor. U-Kwon got beaten up good. They kicked him hard and kicked his face really hard; it looked so realistic. Though what didn’t convince that much was the small amount of blood that was coming out of the side of his lip. It did not make any sense — he got beaten up terribly and he only bleeds that much. They should have added more blood. Anyhow, throughout the video the scene flashes back and forth with the members and a girl. The girl appears dancing listening to music hanging out in her apartment like a normal life. That is the point of the song. This girl is living her life worrying about

nothing while U-Kwon is getting killed and all the other members are worried about U-Kwon and how this girl has caused all this mess. This girl does not deserve U-Kwon. I blame her for everything. Zico and Kyung make some awesome rapping in this video and P.O. too that is actually my favorite part when he comes out rapping. It’s a simpler video less crazy than the last one. Oh and at the end of the video you see the rest of the members come help U-Kwon up and take him away. I was thinking, “Where were you all when he was getting beaten up!” He needed them and they appear once he’s half dead on the floor. “Nice Day” This song certainly makes have a nice day. This has a very jazzy beat. It makes you have a fun time. Just like they say, “Where are my party people at?” Yes, when I heard the beat and read the lyrics it does make you laugh, dance and See HEAR, SAY, page 7

Thor defends the realms once again

“T

hor: The Dark World” is a great movie I recently watched; it was yet another incredibly adventure for the god of thunder. In this movie, a sequel to the first Thor, he faces a bigger threat when he is faced with an enemy that even Odin and Asgard cannot withstand, and he must embark on his most personal journey yet. It’s one that will reunite him with Jane Foster. Thor (Chris Hemsworth) is back to defending the nine realms and protecting those worlds from the evil spirits within. In Asgard, which is one of the nine realms, there is a war going on and Thor must help the soldiers of Asgard in the battles. Thor also reunites with Jane Foster (Natalie Portman), who was a nurse for Dr. Donald Blake. She eventually developed feelings for him and Thor, not knowing they were one and the same. The love triangle went on for a while until Thor revealed the secret of his identity to Jane, which caused Odin (Anthony Hopkins) to punish him though he was forgiven after saving Asgard, and in return Thor even took her to Asgard with him. Thor then continues to withstand the evil within the realms, and save them from

Cinematic By William Rodriguez collapsing. “He faces a bigger threat when At the same time when this is all happening, Loki (Tom Hiddleston) who is also the brother of Thor, is causing trouble with the king of a realm. Loki explains to the king he wishes to be the next one in line for the throne. The king knows Loki just wants power over everyone and be superior so he may cause damage to others. So, he denies Loki the throne. Thor: The Dark World was given a 7.7 rating by the Chicago Sun-Times. It has been a great expectation for many fans of Marvel. We all know the superheroes of Marvel are loved by thousands of people, but this brought a lot of excitement for Thor fans, and it does show many different things that the first film didn’t show. The action in this movie is also mind-blowing, with real life-like fights, makes it seem like the effects aren’t even there. Another great feature about the movie is that it gives you a sequence of how the story un-

folds so you may understand the movie better. Going back to the story, Loki still feels like it is his responsibility to be the next king and be on the throne. He does everything he can to take the power, but he is arrested and handcuffed. He is put in front of the king so that he may decide his fate. Of course the king is furious about Loki’s behavior and demands for him to be locked up in the bottom dungeons of the realm. The king also knows that there is no need to have Loki out on the streets causing trouble, so he issues for the guards to have maximum security on him. Meanwhile, Thor is still on a journey to the different realms and passing through several situations in which his presence is needed. He helps out people and goes into combat with different beasts and creatures. The God of Thunder isn’t afraid of anyone, so it isn’t much of a challenge for him, and he also has the Mjolnir, his powerful hammer. Thor doesn’t realize that while he is fighting all these creatures, there is another big

Marvel Studios/MCT Chris Hemsworth is seen in “Thor: The Dark World.” evil creature building itself to power and waiting for a chance to cause chaos and destruction on the realms. Thor is reassured that he can do it all, and that soon all of the problems will be over in Asgard as well as the rest of the realms. During Thor’s unforgettable journey, Loki is still locked up and is deteriorating. He shows signs of anger and frustration that cause him to try to escape the cell, but he is just weakened even more. At one point, Thor goes and visits Loki down in the dungeon and he is surprised to see his brother in such terrible conditions. They both look at each other and talk, and Thor is just disap-

pointed in him. Later on, when Thor isn’t there anymore, a beast is released and breaks all the cells and causes chaos in the dungeons. Loki’s cell is also broken and he escapes. Thor meets up with Loki outside and he is not happy with Loki’s escape, but at the moment he needs his brother to help him fight the many creatures attacking the realms. Loki reunites with his brother Thor, and they both agree to help each other to defeat the beasts. This creature shows up and begins to savage people, including Loki and Thor. ‘Drowning Anna’ relates to some students

B

ullying has always been a big problem for teenagers throughout the entire world. It will always continue to be unless we change our perspectives about other people and learn to accept them as they are. For Melanie, this lesson was learned far to late. In Sue Mayfield’s book “Drowning Anna,” Anna is new at school and knows no one. Then she befriends Haley Parkin, who is the queen bee at her high school. At first things are going spectacularly for Anna. She has popular friends, goes to parties, and is liked by everyone. But when Haley starts

The Book Look By Belen Silva to ignore her and spreads rumors, Anna doesn’t know how to react. No success She tries to get on Haley’s good side again but nothing seems to work. Every day just keeps getting worse and worse for Anna. Melanie has seen Anna’s struggle and knows how she feels. Melanie too was once best friends with Haley until she completely ruined her.

Anna, feeling completely lost in school and home, doesn’t know what to do. For days she writes a diary and explains how she’s feeling. These feelings later become actions and Anna tries to kill herself. One afternoon, returning from school, Anna gets a bottle of Vodka followed by her mother’s prescribed pills and tries to kill herself in the bathroom. Melanie notices she

wasn’t at school that day and rushes to her house worried that Haley’s taunts and cruel words finally broke her. But by the time she reached the house it was too late. The book ends with Anna in the hospital, the doctors pumping the vodka and pills from her stomach. This book isn’t your regular bad girl vs. victim book. What happens in this book, happens to some girls in high school. “Drowning Anna” isn’t just a book with the entertaining, hard life of Anna. It’s about what her and other girls face today.

Lonely, lost teens confused about life

A

teenage mind will always be confusing. Come close to one that isn’t your child: notice their every move and every thought and tell me how you react. Trust me, you’ll be scared of all the negativity, hate, and anger that build up in a tiny body. The thought of suicide eats the mind little by little. The fights and heartbreaks poison the body and leave the soul rotting. They vanish from the things that once made the heart happy. The mind can’t understand the possible reason to have gotten this bad. The pain and the worry need to finish. The ache has to finish, the consciousness of death is upon one’s thoughts. But then again this sensation will not disappear without help. Insecurities eat our minds slowly. Someone is prettier, someone is smarter, someone will always be better and we can’t handle that. We are gripped with

Observations By Elizabeth Flores paranoia and the idea that we have to be perfect. In social media everyone is looking beautiful and skinny and perfect, while we are on the other side of the screen wanting to be them, hoping that one day we’ll be close enough to that perfection. But deep inside we know we aren’t going to. We don’t need someone to come tell us we’re beautiful or perfect. We don’t need comments that will make a small fraction of our days light up. What we need is to be proven that those comments are actually true and will be true forever. At this age most of us are an emotional mess who think love is the key to everything when actually love turns out to be an excuse for everything.

We are teens, we are stupid. This generation of teenagers is all built up of judgment and fitting in. Society is the one responsible for our attitudes for how we act, for how we do things. When we finally fit in a group, any group, whether it’s the stupidest of groups, we join it. But why? Because we get noticed, we feel safe, we feel like we finally fit in. It’s hard to feel like that nowadays. It’s hard to do anything, really. I mean nothing is really “real.” Everything is misinterpreted and we can’t notice what’s wrong and right when everyone is doing a mixture of both. Can I ask for a favor? I want people to actually pay attention to us teens. We deserve the same attention

we had when we were little. We deserve to have someone listen to us and understand that just because we act the way we do doesn’t mean we can’t change. Just because we’re growing up it doesn’t mean we understand life. Because trust me, we don’t. We don’t understand it and we aren’t close to doing so. It’s hard for us to not be sad. It’s hard for us to look forward for another day of feeling alone and without help. We are humans with heart, but they are just a little bit crooked and need help to be straight and help us follow the path to a better future. Remember, we just need the love and attention we aren’t receiving. You want to stop the suicides? Then listen to what one has to say. You want to stop the pregnancies? Then put limits, yet don’t be too strict. We teenagers tend to be sneaky rebels when it comes to not being a bit free. You want to stop the bullying? Then pay

attention to our actions. Bullying can be prevented but it all depends on noticing the bully and the victim. Both just need someone to talk to. We all just need help. We just need attention. That’s it. We need the love from divorced parents. We need the help of busy counselors. We need the care of a friend. We need the notice of a random stranger. We don’t want to feel alone. That’s it. We want to feel protected and loved, but only by the right people. And for you lonely teens, let’s just be realistic. Life will never be like a dream. Everything is so different to the life we make up. However, that gives you no reason to be hopeless. People love and care for you, they just don’t realize how you’re hurting. They can’t always see behind that fake smile, but show them. Talk to them and explain how you feel; they should understand.

Our generation: What have we become?

T

he world we once knew has changed right before our eyes. Take one good look around you and you will see that nothing is the same anymore. By this I mean the youth. Teenagers. Young adults. Whatever we are. Our generation is going to run the world one day… and that’s something to be afraid of. We are literally the foulest mouthed, irresponsible, egotistical, self-centered creatures living on this planet. I don’t know how we’ve managed to keep this act going on for this long. Everywhere you go you will hear us. We’re not that hard to miss. Our vocabulary consists of all the cuss words you can imagine and more. In fact, that is our vocabulary. We talk with ab-

The Bug By Jessica Arroyo solutely no respect for one another. We throw racist remarks around like nothing. We spill things out as if there are no adults in the room. We don’t care what comes out of our mouths; we don’t care who we hurt. We talk as if we thought we’re the big dogs in the world; as if no one could mess with us. That, my friend, is horribly incorrect. We don’t care who we hurt with our words. This brings us to all the bullying that’s erupted in our schools. Schools aren’t safe anymore. No one can deny that they haven’t bullied someone or they themselves

been bullied. I’ve been bullied, and I’ve been a bully myself. We go around opening our big mouths because we think our words aren’t going to do anything. We think our parents can get us out of anything. But when we get older, who’s going to be there? No one. As we evolve, technology has evolved with us. Everyone if not most of us have a cell phone and Facebook. Bullying can be done by anyone now, and they have all the power literally at their hands. All they have to do is send the message to whoever they want. It’s sickening that we can

no longer go up to someone and tell them something to their face. No we have to be cowards and hide behind a screen. I feel like our generation has gotten too out of hand with that. Our cell phones have only gotten us in more trouble than helped us. Because of all the bullying we have kids committing suicide over a text. We have kids with low self-esteem and that text that you just sent that girl just caused her to take her own life. I mean is that really what we’ve come to? Kids killing kids? We’re too young to be this sad. If you haven’t noticed teenage pregnancy has gone through the roof. You see more young girls getting pregnant than older

women. If we can’t even take care of ourselves what makes us believe that we can take care of another human being for the rest of our lives? We’re too young to be messing with that, honestly. I was taught that sex was only for adults and for when you’re “in love.” I don’t think those 13-yearold parents are in love at all. We have the rest of our lives to be doing whatever we want. We’re all just a little too eager to grow up. But once we grow up, then what? We can’t even own up to our own mistakes. We have to blame everyone else. Who are you going to blame when you’re the one with the big belly? We’re the ones that are going to run this world one day, but how can we run it when we can’t even handle a cell phone correctly? We’re all too worried about “fitting in” or “standing out.” To hell with that. I’m worried about having my priorities together. I’m tired of going down the hall and having to hear everyone yelling at each other, having to witness bullying right in front of me. Getting on Facebook and having to see everyone calling each other names over who stole whose boyfriend. I get it that we’re young and we make mistakes, but do we really have to push someone that far that they’d rather kill themselves than keep breathing? I understand that everyone has problems but why is everyone so mean? Why? That’s my only question. Why? What’s wrong with our generation? Why are we so cruel? I’m honestly terrified of growing up.
