JANUARY 2016
Happy New Year, Ambassadors! Welcome to the second issue of the MAGNETIC PRESS AMBASSADORS CLUB MAGAZINE, the monthly digital zine dedicated to the refined art of visual storytelling. Last issue was a blast, and hopefully this second issue continues that trend (leading to an equally fun third issue, which, as the third, according to the rule, becomes an official pattern)! As you might guess from the cover, this month is big into robots, showcasing the upcoming release of ROBOT ENVY ZENITH, a massive hardcover collection of some of the best robot art from around the world. Collected by the team at RobotEnvy.com, which was started by artist DAVE PASCIUTO, this art book is filled with some amazing works in a broad range of styles that will undoubtedly inspire everyone! We’re also shining a spotlight on illustrator BRENT MCKEE, who has been building a modest portfolio of published work for a few years, but is gearing up for a productive 2016, and we couldn’t be more excited. Check it out and get to know him! This month also marks the official start of our community-created comic, where you voted on the concept, premise, protagonist, etc to get us rolling, and you’ll continue to guide us page-by page, month-by-month! The adventure starts here with the first two pages of THE LEVIATHAN’S DAUGHTER, illustrated by Caio (SUPER-EGO, PROPHET HILL, VIVID) Oliveira! All of this in addition to more fun, creative exercises in THE IMAGYNMASIUM, a look at WHAT WE’RE DIGGING ON this month, and more. If you have any feedback or suggestions, we’d love to hear from you, and would love to start a letters column answering your questions every month! Enjoy!

And it’s not like the Windy City needs yet another labor upheaval… Written by Russelll Brettholtz and illustrated by Miguel Mendonca and Bong Dazo, this 96-page trade paperback collects the complete first arc of the Kickstarter sensation that follows a group of dedicated consociates as they challenge the status quo, and demand the respect they deserve.

A BAD CASE OF
ROBOT ENVY THEY WANT TO BE LIKE US.
EVEN THOUGH THEY’RE ARTIFICIAL, THEIR SEMBLANCE TO LIFE IS UNDENIABLE, AND YET WE’RE THE ONES WHO PRESCRIBE HUMANITY TO THEM. LIVING, SELF-AWARE, INTELLIGENT ROBOTS AREN’T (YET) REAL, BUT WE DREAM OF THE DAY THEY WILL BE. ARTISTS AND DESIGNERS AROUND THE WORLD HAVE IMBUED INORGANIC OBJECTS WITH PERCEIVED PERSONALITY AND SPIRIT FOR DECADES, AND IT WAS ONLY A MATTER OF TIME BEFORE ROBOT ENVY BECAME A REAL THING.

STARTED BY ARTIST DAVE PASCIUTO IN 2012, ROBOT-ENVY.COM BEGAN AS A WEBSITE WHERE ARTISTS COULD GATHER TO SHARE THEIR VISION OF WHAT ARTIFICIAL ROBOT LIFE MIGHT LOOK LIKE. IT QUICKLY GREW INTO A COMMUNITY OF PROFESSIONALS AND ARTISTS FROM A MYRIAD OF INDUSTRIES FROM AROUND THE WORLD. WITH CONTRIBUTORS FROM TV AND FILM CONCEPT DESIGN TO VIDEO GAME DEVELOPMENT TO ANIMATION AND EDITORIAL ILLUSTRATION, THE SHEER VARIETY OF STYLES MADE IT CLEAR THAT THIS WAS A POPULAR TOPIC THAT REACHED ACROSS BORDERS, BACKGROUNDS, MEDIUMS, AND MOODS. EVERYONE LIKES ROBOTS. EVEN IF THEIR DEFINITION OF WHAT A ROBOT IS MAY BE DIFFERENT.
WE ASKED DAVE A FEW QUESTIONS ABOUT THE COMMUNITY, AS WELL AS THE UPCOMING HARDCOVER COLLECTION ROBOT ENVY ZENITH, COMING IN MARCH. January 2016 - page 9

ROBOT ENVY debuted as a sketchbook project in 2012, then grew into a gallery of cool robot artwork from around the world. What was the initial inspiration for such a focused theme? DAVE: Ever since I was a kid, I’ve always been interested in sci-fi, robots and spaceships. I grew up in the 80’s with these robot cartoons unlike I had ever seen before. I was fascinated by shows like Mighty Orbots, Voltron, Robotech and many more. Then I crossed over into comic books and manga with Dynamo Joe, Xenon and Appleseed. Naturally, robots and mechanical things became a recurring theme in my personal artwork. When Kickstarter and crowd-funded projects appeared on the scene, I thought a sketchbook would be a cool place to start. From there, it grew into a community filled with thousands of fans worldwide. Is there a particular definition of what qualifies as a “robot” in the gallery? There seems to be quite an imaginative range of directions throughout the work. DAVE: We make a conscious effort to find unique artwork with diversity in style. We also want to include other mediums other than digital paint. We love finding sculptures, 3d prints, found art and other traditional art as well. Any artwork that appears to convey life through a designed, mechanical, or technological look is considered a robot. January 2016 - page 10

The website has amassed some beautiful artwork from professionals from around the world, in many different industries, including film, games, comics, etc. How do you find and gather the material for the site? DAVE: Robot Envy is a small team consisting of my girlfriend and a couple of my students. We scour the web for imagery that fits our criteria and makes an impact on us. We search sites like ArtStation, Deviant Art, Pinterest, Tumblr and Behance, as well as forums and other communities. These links get curated and we contact each artist individually. Rather than just re-post links, we actually contact the artist directly and personally ask for permission to display their works. We want to build relationships with them. From there, we schedule their post date. After doing this for a couple years, the process is pretty smooth.

How large has the collection grown since the launch of the website? DAVE: Robot-envy.com has featured over 140 artists worldwide. This was quite an effort to organize, and producing the Zenith book is a huge achievement for us. We never set out to produce books -- especially one that contains so much talent and inspiration. I am really glad it all came together, though. It’s awesome! Can anyone submit pieces for inclusion on the site, or is it curated through a process? DAVE: Yes. Absolutely. We encourage it! There is a submission page on our site, everyone is welcome. It is http://robot-envy.com/ submissions. However, we do have a screening process to ensure quality. After all, we do feature the world’s best robot art! To date, you have produced two other, albeit smaller, ROBOT ENVY books – the first as a successful Kickstarter, and the second as a spotlight sketchbook of your own work. ZENITH marks technically the third ROBOT ENVY release. What makes this one the ultimate evolution of the website’s goals so far? DAVE: This book was really the next logical step. What started with my own artwork has grown into an amazing community of thousands. Robot Envy: Zenith features over 60 artists from the website collected into a 256 page art book. These artists are extremely talented and the artwork they created is sure to inspire others. THE IMAGYMNASIUM is a place where you can practice using that universal tool called “Imagination,” to stretch that grey-matter muscle between your ears in a way that is not only fun, but useful when applied to everyday creative problem solving. Think outside the box and see things that aren’t there. Conjure reality!

You spoke and we listened! The results from our inaugural “Let’s Make a COmic” kickoff survey were collected, put in a creative crock pot to mingle and simmer, and after some secret sauce was added, we are ready to begin what could become an excellent epic of otherworldly proportions! Before we pull back the opening curtain, let’s take a look at your top choices from the survey: 1) What genre should we explore? 35% voted for “Mythical Fantasy”, with a close second “Space Opera” coming in at 31%. So we’ll set out on a combination of the two: a Mythical Fantasy adventure set on another world! 2) Where does this Epic take place? There was a tie between “Moon Base Zeta” and “Underwater”, so we’re combining those into an underwater colony, where people breathe water rather than air. Venturing out on the surface requires liquid-filled breathing gear, because air alone is suffocating. A real fish-person-out-ofwater scenario! 3) Our main character is: a girl, by overwhelming majority. 4) Our main character’s job is: more than a third of you chose “Monster Hunter/Bounty Hunter”, so be it! 5) Our main character’s disposition is: a tie between “Loner by Choice” and “Optimistically Naïve.” While we’ve imagined a good reason for that unique combination, we’ll see how you choose to develop that within the character as the series progresses... 6) The main character’s driving aspiration is: two thirds of you chose “to find the answer to a burning question.” We’ve also imagined what that question might be, in order to bolt out of the starting gate, but you can help us figure out the actual Question as the story unfolds! 7) The main character suffers from: anger-management issues, according to 35% majority vote. An interesting juxtaposition for someone who is also “Optimistically Naïve”, but we’ll see that play out in time! 8) The main character’s primary obstacle is: “being at the wrong place at the wrong time” according to more than half of you. This will certainly become evident in the first few pages! 9) Describe our opening scenario: “The main character is targeted by a mysterious antagonist for reasons unknown.”
Et voila... our story begins! Get ready to help us create a sci-fi fantasy epic we’re calling

What happens next? Or more specifically: 1) What does our heroine look like? 2) What is she doing? 3) What does she find? and 4) What does she encounter? WHAT WE’RE READING: ISLAND - BY BRANDON GRAHAM AND EMMA RIOS Brandon Graham is insane. The good kind of insane, where beautiful weirdness leaks out of his brain and onto the page through ludicrously detailed artwork filled with hundreds of Where’s-Waldo-sized incidental tidbits and more pun-filled wordplay than you could possibly imagine. His earlier books, KING CITY, MULTIPLE WARHEADS, and his re-vamping of PROPHET are perfect examples of his brilliance, and you can easily get lost in any one of those volumes for hours and days. If you happen to make it back to the surface, however, and have a hankering for more, he has teamed up with artist EMMA RIOS (who’s own PRETTY DEADLY is a great read, too) to build ISLAND, a monthly anthology of envelope-pushing, visually playful, and mind-bending serialized stories by a curated community of friends and peers like LUDROE, FAREL DALRYMPLE, and GAEL BERTRAND. Each issue weighs in with a hefty page count, and with five issues out so far, it’s a lot of tasty reading to binge on. Treat yourself, you deserve it. (https://imagecomics.com/comics/releases/island-1)
WHAT WE’RE PLAYING: GAME OF THRONES Yes, we do mean this to be under “playing” and not “watching.” At the risk of redundancy in only our first two issues, we can’t help but plug another Telltale Game, one we mentioned briefly last month: GAME OF THRONES. It took us until recently to give this interactive series based on the awesome HBO show (and supposedly a book or something?) a try, but that’s only because we doubted a slightlycartoon-y video game based on such a grim, morally topsy-turvy drama could measure up to the raw, unsettling power of the series. BOY WERE WE WRONG. This 6-part interactive, episodic series is every bit as engrossing as the cable show itself, with unexpected (and often violent) twists springing up when you least expect them. It really makes you think hard about each choice, which gets nerve-wracking when that response timer counts to zero, knowing that no character is safe in this universe, not even in this marginal side-story made up of an entirely new cast of charcters that runs parallel to the show’s plotlines. The appearance of key characters from the show, performed by their actual cast members, not only gives these new characters credibility, but qualifies this brief “season” as an offering that feels like actual cannon. With references to events in the show, such as the red wedding, the purple wedding, the chartreuse wedding, hell, pretty much all of the weddings, you really do feel like you’re in the middle of it all. If you’re squirming in your seat waiting for the next season to start on HBO (soon!), you might be surprised how easily this interactive CG toon scratches that itch. WHAT WE’RE WATCHING: MR. ROBOT We’re Christian Slater fans. We’ll just state that up front. When ads for USA’s MR. ROBOT teased his participation, we were on board before it even ran. And we weren’t disappointed, but for so many other reasons. If you’re not familiar with the premise, MR. ROBOT is a show about the life of a reclusive, socially awkward vigilante hacker named Elliot who is recruited by an underground movement to utterly destroy corporate America. Narrated by Elliot, the show is viewed from the perspective of the audience as his “imaginary friend,” a clever narrative tool that has compounding significance as the first season builds. Rami Malek won a Critics Choice Award for his portrayal of Elliot, and Slater won a Golden Globe for his role as Elliot’s dad, the titular “Mister Robot” who first recruits Elliot. Both awards are extremely well deserved, as is the Golden Globe award to the show itself. Season 2 is scheduled to premiere in June or July, with showrunner Sam Esmail slated to direct all 10 episodes. We cannot wait. (http://www.usanetwork.com/mrrobot)
WHAT WE’RE LISTENING TO: THE SECRET HISTORY OF STAR WARS (AUDIOBOOK) Scifi writer and film nut Drew Gaska suggested in passing one day that we should read this book which dives head-first into the muddy swamp of facts and false claims behind the creation of our (and any other?) generation’s greatest franchise, STAR WARS. So many nerd-fights and debates have been waged over the details behind the many controversial and/or brilliant decisions made by series creator George Lucas, that it took author Michael Kaminski 626 pages to sort through it all. From the first passing inkling of maybe someday making a space movie to the final critical response to Ep3 REVENGE OF THE SITH, this book is MEATY. But come on, who’s got time to read 626 pages of anything these days? So we got the unabridged audio book version from Audible -- all 24hours of it -- read by Josh Robert Thompson. Not only is Thompson incredibly easy to listen to, but his impersonations of Lucas, Hamill, Coppola, etc are pretty spot on. A few are a tad cartoony, but seriously, for the first few hours, I thought the wealth of statements by Lucas were actual recordings of Lucas when in fact they were just Thompson DOING Lucas. Frankly, this book made me appreciate Star Wars – and Lucas – both more and less in equal amounts over the course of listening. There’s no doubt that Lucas got extremely lucky when he struck gold with the first film, but that luck was unquestionably backed up by genuine talent, tenacity, and endurance. Think what you may about the prequels (we wouldn’t argue against any of it), but listening to this account in all its glory gives an intriguing insight into the creative process that made Star Wars the juggernaut that it is. HOT ARTIST SPOTLIGHT:
BRENT McKEE Illustrator Brent McKee has been drawing most of his life, growing up all over the US before eventually settling down and graduating high school in Plano, Texas. He took his interest into higher education, graduating from the esteemed Kubert school in Dover, New Jersey focusing on the principles of sequential storytelling. He spent nine years as a child care worker in a placement center for teens, fitting in the odd, occasional comic book job when it came along, filling his illustration urge with work for various skateboard companies, Nintendo products, Marvel/Upperdeck, and private commission work. His first comic work was for the series NOBLE CAUSES “Extended Family from Image comics, followed by other contributions to books such as the Eisner-nominated OUTLAW TERRITORY, and more recently THE BOWERY BOYS graphic novel from Dark Horse.
