LETTER

President’s

SPRING 2017 hat a wonderful year we have been having at Magnificat! From the energy of Night-in-Blue this fall to the excitement of the Sentimental Journey Sleepover for our seniors, our community remains enthusiastic and forward-focused. Our foundation as a strong, Catholic college-preparatory school, with a holistic Mission, has positioned us for progress and growth. In February, I had the pleasure of sharing the State of the School with our faculty and staff, Board of Directors, current parents, alumnae and friends. There is much good news to share, as we have already taken impressive strides in implementing our Strategic Plan. The launch of the Empowerment Initiative stresses our belief in the power of personalization and student choice. This year marks our 28th Annual Gala. The Blue & White Ball chaired by Ann and Terry Coyne, represents the incredible generosity of the Magnificat community. The event helps to ensure that each and every student who currently attends, or wants to attend, Magnificat has that opportunity. I am very grateful to each and every one of you for your continued support and dedication to our school. As we transition into the final part of this school year, we should all take a few moments to celebrate the incredible young women who bless our community every day. These young women model the Magnificat values of commitment, compassion, life-long learning and respect all whom they encounter. Because of my personal experiences with our Magnificat students, I look to the future with great hope and anticipation. I wish you a blessed Easter and a joyful spring! With gratitude,

state OF THE SCHOOL

The purpose of a State of the School address is to share observations, trends and initiatives with the entire Magnificat Community; to provide updates and recommendations on those things seen as necessary for school growth and the fulfillment of the Strategic Plan.

As I find myself over half-way through my second year as President of Magnificat, I reflect on all of the blessings this community has afforded me and the progress we continue to make on behalf of our young women. After much listening this year, we have responded to the needs of our students by assessing our approach to the Magnificat experience. Guided by our Mission, we strive to partner with parents, guardians, alumnae and friends to strengthen our approach to empowering our young women to be role models for the real world. We live our Mission in partnership with our families and friends. Thank you for sharing our good news with the greater community.

Why I Chose Magnificat

CLAIRE MARTIN ‘20

IT IS NOT A SPECIFIC MEMORY, MOSTLY A FEELING Every time I would come in for an appointment, any checkup, Nurse Kelly was always there. She would make sure that I felt comfortable and would calm me if I were upset. I would bring my Belle doll in a stroller, who was also attended to by Kelly’s TLC. I knew then that I wanted to attend Magnificat because that is where Nurse Kelly went. THE SUMMER OF 2004 is when everything changed. As her mother recalls, “we started noticing rashes and then some bruising. Although at first we were not concerned, thinking children naturally get bumps and bruises, we took her to the doctor’s after the third occurrence. The dermatologist noticed a large bruise that caused concern and ordered a test for a complete blood count. We left the office only to receive a phone call a few hours later.” Claire was taken to the hospital immediately for a platelet transfusion. An average person has approximately 150,000 platelets at any time; Claire had fifteen. On Friday, September 18, 2004, the worst was confirmed – Claire was diagnosed with Leukemia. Kelly Nowak Laschinger ’96 ("Nurse Kelly") was part of the staff of specialists assigned to Claire’s case. “Our relationship with Kelly and

Rainbow Babies and Children’s Hospital started with us putting all of our faith into the medical staff knowing that they would do the best for our daughter over the next two years.” LIFE AFTER TREATMENT Even though Claire’s final treatment was November 19, 2006, “Not a day goes by where you know that everything is going to be okay.” As Claire transitioned away from the life of treatments and doctor’s visits, Kelly noticed that much of Claire’s socialization was with adults and the hospital staff. Kelly suggested that Claire be enrolled into a ballet program. Claire’s love for performing has since flourished! She is still involved in ballet, is a cheerleader for St. Edwards High School, and is a competitive cheerleader. She is a member of Magnificat’s Outreach Club, Students in Medicine and Baking Club. In her free time, Claire volunteers for Leukemia Lymphoma Society, Walk for Wishes and Relay for Life. She aspires to be a pediatric oncologist in hopes of one day saving others as she was saved. Magnificat was the only high school that she applied to.

LETTER FROM THE BOARD CHAIR

ANNUAL FUND

W

Our legacy in your hands!

inter has passed (if you can call it winter this year!) and the Easter season is upon us. Not

long from now, our seniors will be graduating. When I think of Magnificat’s graduation, I

look fondly back on my own. I still cherish the

memories of our class Night-in-Blue skit, senior prom, and walking

down the aisle in a white gown with red roses. Fortunately, I have two daughters, Meghan ’09 and Bridget ’15, who also experienced the

friendships, spirituality, and academic education at Magnificat. And

fortunately, I have been involved as an alumna, both on the Alumnae

Board and the Board of Directors. As Magnificat prepares to welcome

Your gift to the Annual Fund allows flexibility for unexpected educational opportunities throughout the year, and gives Magnificat the ability to plan strategically for future growth. When our community members come together with a common goal, great things happen. Our goal is to have every young woman graduate from Magnificat with the confidence, compassion and courage to make a positive difference in our world. With your support, we can do that.

Thank you for considering a gift to the Annual Fund.

the class of 2021, I would like the incoming students’ families to

know that our mission to educate young women holistically to learn,

lead, and serve in the spirit of Mary’s Magnificat is alive and well. The Board and the leadership team at Magnificat are committed to our

values of respect, commitment, collaboration, compassion, faith-filled life, and lifelong learning. In addition, we strive to support the new

Empowerment Initiative, which ensures that our students will be role

models for the real world, grounded in faith. They will also receive an excellent academic education and will be trained as leaders prepared to serve those in need.

That’s why I love Magnificat and am committed to making sure our school’s mission is ever present in all that we do, and that we remain dedicated to the Sisters of the Humility of Mary, our founding sponsors. I look forward to seeing you at some of our upcoming events, including the

I will miss the inviting and warm atmosphere of walking the halls of Magnificat. Vivian Moussa // Don’t be afraid to try to new things! Sometimes it takes doing something you dislike, to find out what you love. Fiona Chambers // Get involved in as many things as you can, but also give yourself a break to be with your friends. It really does fly by, I promise! I’ll miss the chocolate chip cookies from the cafe, but only the ones that are fresh, soft and still warm from the oven! In the end, that one point you missed on your bio test won’t matter. Study hard, do your best, but don’t forget to have some fun. I’m going to miss not being able to wear a uniform every day – it’ll be a little weird if I show up to my first college class in a Magnificat skirt and polo ensemble! Nicole Whitticar // I will miss the teachers and the relationships that I have built over the years. Doc Wilson’s stories about his son Thomas are the best. I will be forever grateful to Miss Carmody for encouraging me to be a better writer.
