Welcome
TO THE 31st ANNUAL MAGNIFICAT GALA! Thank you for joining us as we set sail for the 31st Annual Gala in celebration of Magnificat’s rich tradition of Catholic education for young women. As always, we gather in a spirit of deep gratitude for the Sisters of the Humility of Mary, who started the Magnificat Mission that has touched the lives of over 12,000 graduates over the last 65 years. Thanks to the faithful leadership of the HM Sisters, this important work of educating young women in the spirit of Mary’s Magnificat will continue to be enlivened for many generations to come. Tonight, we honor and celebrate Sr. Helen Jean Novy, HM and the integral role she has played in furthering this Mission for 45 years. Beloved by students, colleagues, and all who know her, Sister’s contributions to Magnificat are innumerable. We honor her with unending gratitude for her love for education, her one-of-a-kind spirit, and all she has done to bring life to this community that she loves so dearly. I want to express my sincere gratitude to our dedicated Gala Committee who has poured countless hours into making this evening so special. Thank you for all of your hard work and creativity! Because of your presence here this evening, we are able to provide the unique education and programming that prepares Magnificat’s young women for leadership in their careers, families, and communities. Over 60 percent of our students are able to attend Magnificat because of financial aid dollars that are raised during the gala each year. Thank you for the many ways that you show your support to make sure that a Magnificat education is possible for every student, regardless of financial means. I hope you enjoy your evening as we celebrate this wonderful community and the many good things in store for Magnificat in the years to come! In the Spirit of Mary’s Magnificat,

Sr. Helen Jean Novy, HM Born to Helen and Frank in 1940, Sr. Helen Jean Novy grew up in Cleveland’s Old Brooklyn neighborhood. She moved to Villa Maria, Pennsylvania, where she attended high school with the Sisters of the Humility of Mary, the religious community she would go on to enter herself in 1959. She has spent a total of 56 years in educational ministry, 45 of which have been in service to Magnificat High School. In the 1990s, Sr. Helen Jean also served as a consultant to the Diocese of Cleveland’s Office of Catholic Education, where she helped develop curriculum that was used for decades in each Catholic grade school and high school throughout the diocese. Throughout her 45 years at Magnificat, Sr. Helen Jean has served the school in many capacities. She taught a wide variety of subjects, including English, Latin, Math, Theology, and Computer Application, and later her role would expand to include teacher support, curriculum, and Mission work. She has also served the school as Interim President. In her current role as Vice President of Mission, she has been instrumental in developing the strategic direction of the school. One of her most significant contributions has been SurroundLearning®, which is the pedagogical framework that recognizes everything in a physical space as an opportunity for learning. It would be the foundation for the renovation of the modernday HM Center, Marian Commons, and Grotto, and is the framework for the transformation of the second-floor science classrooms that will take place this summer. In 2017, Sr. Helen Jean received the Lead.Learn.Proclaim Award from the National Catholic Educational Association in recognition of her outstanding efforts, contributions, and achievements on behalf of Catholic Education. And in 2019, she received the Sr. Carol Anne Smith, HM Award for distinguishing herself as an exemplary leader who strives to live a faith-filled life in a spirit of gratitude and joy, celebrates the history and heritage of the Humility of Mary Community, and empowers others in the school community to lead and serve. Sr. Helen Jean radiates a joyful commitment to Mary’s Magnificat and to the Mission and values of Magnificat High School. Through her deep study of Catholic Theology and her authentic embrace of Christian discipleship, Sister has distinguished herself as the theological and spiritual leader of the school. Her enduring commitment to Magnificat will continue as she takes on her new role as Vice President of Mission Emerita at the conclusion of this school year. Thank you, Sr. Helen Jean, for your innumerable contributions to the life and Mission of Magnificat! 6
Community Blessing “‘From generation to generation Wisdom passes into holy souls and makes them friends of God and prophets,’ an unceasing work of love and challenge whereby Holy Wisdom marks the world as her own.” Sr. Elizabeth Johnson, CSJ, Friends of God and Prophets
Sr. Helen Jean, From generation to generation, you have been a blessing to the Magnificat community. As a friend of God, your joyful embrace of the Gospel and vocation as a Sister of the Humility of Mary, has drawn us closer in friendship to God. As a prophet, your loving-kindness has brought hope and comfort in times of need and your creative wisdom has birthed visionary realities, large and small. And so now we join in gratitude to pray in blessing over you: Spirit of God, May Sr. Helen Jean know our deep gratitude for her steadfast commitment to Mary’s Magnificat and to the members of the Magnificat community. Response: Bless her now and always. May she be bright with joy, trusting that the good work begun in and through her will continue to bear fruit at Magnificat. Response: Bless her now and always. May she continue her unceasing work of love, as her spirit rejoices in You and echoes Mary’s song of praise, The Almighty has done great things for me, and holy is your name. Response: Bless her now and always. Amen. 7
