LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT AND BOARD CHAIRPERSON Dear Friends, What an exciting time it is at Magnificat as we kick off our capital campaign, Building Excellence Together. Thanks to the increasing generosity of our alumnae, parents, families, and friends, the 2018-19 fiscal year was one of the most successful in recent history, allowing us to officially launch the campaign on October 23. On that evening, we unveiled our plans for the continuation of Magnificat’s capital improvements that will enhance our students’ learning experiences both in and outside of the classroom. The first phases of the campaign included Coyne Tennis Courts, Karnatz Family Field, and a new HVAC system to heat and cool our classrooms and gymnasium. We are very excited to announce that the final phase will entail the transformation of our science spaces to reflect best practices in modern learning. As the spaces are transformed, the pedagogy of our science department will transform as well to ensure that the resources and spaces that guide our students’ learning are working in tandem to provide them with the college-preparatory science curriculum that will best prepare them for the rigor of collegelevel coursework. We are deeply grateful to the many volunteers who have worked so hard to make this campaign possible, and we ask you to consider joining us as we continue this important work of providing a holistic, faith-filled education to our young women. In addition to our community’s incredible generosity in supporting Magnificat’s capital improvements, The Magnificat Fund — which provides us with the resources necessary to keep our Mission going year after year — raised over $370,000 this year, the largest amount in school history. Because of this continued growth, we are able to expand our educational programming, making sure that our students have access to academic, co-curricular, athletic, and spiritual formation opportunities that will shape them into leaders who recognize their responsibility to make a difference in our world. We are thrilled to share the good news in the pages of this annual report about what this community’s giving spirit helped us accomplish in 2018-2019. Your generosity creates an environment where our students are challenged to explore new opportunities each year as they work toward their full potential with the support of our faculty and staff. Thank you for the many ways that you continue to live Mary’s Magnificat in the world and for how you encourage our young women to do the same. Gratefully,

Moira Clark ’77 President

BUILDING EXCELLENCE TOGETHER THE CAMPAIGN FOR MAGNIFICAT

A NOTE FROM OUR CO-CHAIRS Dear Friends, We are proud to co-chair the Building Excellence Together Leadership Committee along with honorary co-chairs Sr. Carol Anne Smith, HM and Jan Duffy Leitch ’68 and Jeff Leitch. A tremendous amount of work has been done during the quiet phase of the campaign to get us to this point, where we can From left to right: Co-Chairs Joe Lee and Caroline Lee; formally announce the exciting plans for the future Honorary Co-Chairs Jeff Leitch and Jan Duffy Leitch ’68; Co-Chairs Ann Litzler Coyne ’88 and Terry Coyne. Not of Magnificat High School. We would like to express pictured: Honorary Co-Chair Sr. Carol Anne Smith, HM. our gratitude to the Magnificat Board of Directors, Magnificat’s Leadership and Advancement Teams, and to all of the donors who have supported the campaign to date. Together, we are making the vision of Building Excellence Together a reality for our young women. This campaign is vital to fulfilling the school’s Mission of educating young women holistically in the spirit of Mary’s Magnificat. To maintain the rich tradition of educational excellence that Magnificat has provided to students for over 64 years, the facilities and resources on our campus must match the high-caliber instruction students receive in and outside of the classroom. Magnificat’s more than 12,300 alumnae make incredible contributions to this world as a result of the education they received here, and this campaign will ensure that future generations of Magnificat students will be prepared to become leaders in college and beyond with an education rooted in faith and best practices in education. To date, we have raised $5.5 million of the $7.75 million goal. On behalf of the Campaign Leadership Committee, we invite you to join us in our efforts to make Building Excellence Together the most successful campaign in Magnificat history. Current students and every generation of students that follow deserve the very best, and this campaign will give them exactly that. Thank you in advance for any way that you can contribute in the coming year to the efforts of this campaign for our young women. In the Spirit of Mary’s Magnificat,

Ann Litzler Coyne ’88

THE PATH TO BUILDING EXCELLENCE TOGETHER The Building Excellence Together campaign began by profoundly transforming the learning spaces in the Magnificat “backyard” for the benefit of our students. In 2016, Phase One began with a gift from Ann Litzler Coyne ’88 and Terry Coyne that completely renovated the tennis courts on the northeast end of the property. Phase Two followed in 2017 with a lead gift from Maureen Karnatz Smith ’81 and Steve Smith that allowed for the development of the Karnatz Family Field, making Magnificat the first all-girls’ Catholic school in the area with a turf field. Fiona Campbell Chambers ’90 and Brian Chambers gifted the field with a scoreboard, and Theresa Rini Simms ’89 and Nicole Rini Fenix ’89 made a gift in honor of their parents that furnished the field with a bleacher system. Summer 2019 brought with it Phase Three of Building Excellence Together, a state-of-the-art HVAC system installed in the original school building. This system provides air conditioning for our classrooms for the first time and allows Magnificat to lower our carbon footprint and increases our ability to be as green and sustainable as possible. We are thrilled to announce that Phase Four of our campus transformation will be realized as Magnificat’s Center for Science Exploration. The same group that designed the Marian Commons and the HM Center, Fielding Nair International (FNI), along with their local partners at Payto Architects Inc., developed the design of our new science spaces. Faculty members from our Science Department have been part of the design process and have worked closely with FNI’s educational architects to ensure that Magnificat’s science curriculum aligns with the new spaces and the ever-evolving best practices in science learning.

FORMER MAGNIFICAT SCIENCE TEACHER LEAVES LEGACY FOR FUTURE STUDENTS Challenging students to imagine boundless possibilities for themselves is one of the primary goals of a Magnificat education. In her 35 years of service to Magnificat, science faculty member Elizabeth “Betty” Dabrowski expertly achieved this with her students both in and outside of the classroom. Now, due in large part to a significant gift the beloved science teacher left the school in her estate, future generations will be inspired to enter STEM fields in Magnificat’s new state-of-the-art Center for Science Exploration. Betty graduated from John Carroll University in 1972 with a B.S. in Chemistry and earned an M.S. in Chemistry in 1974. Though she was known for being a woman of great humility, Betty was highly accomplished in the local science community, holding positions of leadership in various science associations and winning awards for her contributions to the field. She served as President of the Cleveland Chapter of the National Honor Society for Women in Chemistry and held many offices in the American Chemical Society’s Cleveland Section. In 2013, she received the American Chemical Society’s Division of Chemical Education Central Region Award for Excellence in High School Teaching. Betty joined the Magnificat faculty in 1979 and would go on to teach every level of Chemistry. In the classroom, Betty engaged her students with humor and unique activities and approaches that made chemistry interesting and enjoyable for both students who loved science and those who found the subject challenging. She was known for maintaining friendships with alumnae long after they graduated, many of whom credit Betty for inspiring in them a love for science that pushed them to enter the field themselves. Former student Dr. Syma Dar ’97 remembers her high school mentor’s lasting impact: “She was a champion of young women pursuing science, and her enthusiasm for this brimmed over during the activities she led. As a psychiatrist looking back all these years later, I see Ms. Dabrowski as a clear influence in my decision to pursue science and medical school.” Chris Tetzlaff ’96 remembers struggling in chemistry before meeting Betty, whose mentorship inspired her to eventually become a chemistry teacher herself: “I am in my nineteenth year teaching high school chemistry, largely due to her influence, her belief in me, her heart, her passion, and her love of her students and the field of chemistry. I am part of her legacy, and every day I strive to make her proud and to be half the teacher to my students that she was to me.” Eva Bongiovanni ’87 identifies Betty’s class as a turning point when she began to see school as a place for substantive learning rather than just grades on a report card. “[Ms. Dabrowski] illuminated a dense and difficult subject for me. Although I went on to study at the University of Michigan and Harvard with amazing and accomplished (and often famous) professors, Ms. Dabrowski remains one of the most impactful and memorable teachers to me.” Betty’s mentorship had a significant impact on her students and colleagues alike. She served as the Chair of the Science Department for many years, and she was known for encouraging her fellow teachers to try new and creative approaches to the curriculum. Former colleague Lori Koss remarked,

MAGNIFICAT HIGH SCHOOL

“Betty was highly regarded as a distinguished teacher and mentor to our Science Department due to her impeccable knowledge of chemistry, unsurpassed wisdom, and superlative passion for all the student scientists that graced the labs here at Magnificat. She was a rare treasure.” While she was most well known for her contributions to the science department, Betty was deeply committed to Magnificat’s Mission and values. When she passed away in May 2018 the significant estate gift that Betty left to Magnificat was a humbling tribute to how she felt about the school and the importance of opening up our students’ eyes to their potential as women leaders. In reflecting on how Betty would feel about her gift being used to transform Magnificat’s science labs, President Moira Clark ’77 said, “The idea that the transformation of the science space is catalyzed by our desire to engage the students as much as possible in the fields of science so they can imagine themselves as women working in the science fields — I hope Betty is rejoicing in the communion of saints about that.” The Magnificat community is deeply grateful for all that Betty brought to the lives of her students during her 35-year career, and for how her love of science and teaching will live on in future generations of young scientists thanks to her humble generosity.

Betty’s philanthropic support of Magnificat spanned several decades. In 2002, Betty Dabrowski established the Leonard A. Krawczynski/Elizabeth A. Dabrowski Endowed Scholarship in honor of her uncle.

From left to right: Sr. Mary Ann Spangler, Sr. Eilis McCulloh, Sr. Elaine Schindler, Sr. Jean Orsuto, Sr. Karen Bernhardt, Sr. Catherine T. McConnell ’63, Sr. Joanne Gardner, and Sr. Helen Jean Novy were the featured speakers at a Magnificat in-service in August, where they shared about their ministries with faculty and staff.

SISTERS OF THE HUMILITY OF MARY DONATE LEAD GIFT TO CAPITAL CAMPAIGN As Magnificat’s founding congregation, the charism of the Sisters of the Humility of Mary has been the guidepost that has informed the Mission and direction of Magnificat since 1955. Sixty-four years later, the Sisters continue to invest in the school and recently made a $1 million gift to Building Excellence Together that will significantly transform science learning for future generations of Magnificat students. Founded in 1854 in Dommartin-sous-Amance, France, there have been a total of 1,066 vowed Sisters of the Humility of Mary who have served in a wide variety of ministries, from hospital administration to housing the homeless and many more in between. When Magnificat first opened in 1955, the school was fully-staffed by the congregation, and a total of 110 Sisters have served as teachers, staff members, and administrators throughout the school’s history. In that time, the Sisters have shaped and given life to the school’s rich tradition of educating young women in the spirit of Mary’s Magnificat. Though the number of Sisters working at Magnificat has diminished over time due to the realities facing religious congregations throughout the United States, the HM charism continues to be central to the life and Mission of Magnificat. HM history is woven into the theology curriculum, Freshman Heritage Day and retreats bring students to the HM motherhouse each year, and Sr. Helen Jean Novy serves as a community leader and spiritual mentor through her role as Vice President of Mission. Additionally, intersections between HM ministries and Magnificat academics and co-curriculars abound, and Sisters often visit the school to contribute their wisdom and real-world experiences to student learning.

10

MAGNIFICAT HIGH SCHOOL

HM President Sr. Toby Lardie sees Magnificat as instrumental in carrying the Sisters’ history and heritage into the future. “Magnificat High School is an incredible expression of extending the mission of the Sisters of the Humility of Mary, of bringing more abundant life to others and providing a foundation for young women who in turn will be the ones to pay it forward — bringing more abundant life to others through their own efforts in leadership and service.” The Sisters’ decision to give such a monumental gift to the school was certainly based on the long history and relationship between the congregation and the school, but it was also driven by the visionary plan for this campaign. The science spaces will not simply be remodeled, but will be truly transformed based on modern best practices for science learning, and Magnificat’s science curriculum will be transformed accordingly to align with the spaces. This gift is a testament to the HMs’ lasting commitment to ensuring that Magnificat’s young women receive a formational education rooted in both faith and the latest cutting-edge practices in education. President Moira Clark knew the Sisters would support the campaign in any way they could, but she was deeply moved by the extent of their generosity. “The message contained in this gift is profound. The Sisters are courageously choosing radical generosity for future generations. It speaks volumes about their love for Magnificat, and it also speaks volumes about them and their authentic discipleship and their commitment to Christ, to the church, and to the world. What they model for us is as precious a part of the gift as the gift itself, and it fills us with great humility and a sense of responsibility to steward the gift as responsibly and lovingly as we can.” In addition to the years of dedicated time and service that the HMs have contributed to Magnificat, this $1 million donation makes them the largest lifetime donors in the school’s history. During the event that marked the launch of the campaign on October 23, the Sisters received a standing ovation in recognition for all they have done to bring Magnificat to this pivotal moment. In her remarks that evening, Sr. Toby said, “These young women are blessed to have an inspiring place of learning with teachers who show such commitment, dedication, and compassion that will enfold these students and their daughters after them into the future. It is truly a place that brings more abundant life to God’s people.” Magnificat is deeply grateful to the Sisters of the Humility of Mary for modeling the commitment, dedication, and compassion that has made this community what it is throughout the past 64 years. 2018-2019 REPORT TO THE COMMUNITY

ANNE AND BRIAN HURTUK Anne and Brian Hurtuk have supported Magnificat in many ways — as parents, volunteers, and donors — since the late 90s, when their daughters Katie ’99 and Megan ’01 attended. Brian was active in the Fathers’ Club, serving as president in 2000-2001, and they both fondly remember helping out with Night-in-Blue during those years. Having attended Catholic grade schools and high schools themselves, the Hurtuks appreciate the opportunities for both academic and spiritual growth that Catholic schools offer. “Magnificat gave our daughters the space and support to explore their talents, and encouraged them to stretch and challenge themselves,” Anne and Brian said. “We felt that when our daughters were at school, our family values were being extended and continued. Now that they are adults and well into their careers, they both credit Magnificat for helping to develop not only their knowledge and work habits, but also their confidence in their own abilities.”

14

MAGNIFICAT HIGH SCHOOL

Knowing that not all parents have the option to make choices about their education, the Hurtuks have supported a number of schools, including Magnificat, in ways that make choosing a [Catholic] education accessible to more families for whom it is financially out of reach. For the Hurtuks, establishing a Named Endowed Scholarship at Magnificat seemed to be the next logical step in ensuring they could continue to help other young women achieve their educational and spiritual goals. And they believe Magnificat will be a good steward of their philanthropy. They said, “Magnificat strives to fulfill its motto. We have seen it in action in our family, and in the teachers, staff, and young women we have come to know over the years. If we can play a small part in continuing the Mission, we feel blessed to be able to do so.”

KATI KRATUS SMALL

Education is key for Charlotte, North Carolina-based Kati Kratus Small ’97 and her husband, Chris. For them, education is an equity issue, so in addition to supporting their high schools and Princeton University, where they met, they use their time and philanthropic dollars to support local and national educational organizations like the Charlotte-Piedmont Triad Chapter of Teach for America, where Kati serves on the Board of Directors; Community in Schools, a national organization that builds relationships that empower at-risk students to stay and perform well in school and become good achievers not just academically but also in life; and Classroom Central, a Charlotte-based organization that provides school supplies to teachers in high-poverty schools.

Magnificat faculty and staff taught Kati and her peers to

Having spent nearly 20 years as a financial advisor to educational and large non-profit institutions, Kati understands that her gifts to such organizations can make the biggest impact if they are not restricted for a specific purpose. That’s why she supports The Magnificat Fund.

be confident in who they are and in their abilities. These are values that she instills in her children, Hunter, 7, and Samantha, 6, and they are the values she seeks as part of their education. From Kati’s perspective, Magnificat is a strong, singlesex, faith-based school that prepares students to take advantage of opportunities, whether they be in Greater Cleveland, in another state, or even in another country. She feels her gifts to Magnificat will go farther than they would somewhere else, that the school effectively leverages those dollars to make a larger impact on from the class of 1997 have done to consciously remind each other of what the school has done for them, and she believes that alumnae have a responsibility to give back as they are able to ensure that future generations of Magnificat students have the same opportunities they had or better. “Part of your role in society is to help others,” she said. A belief that, no doubt, was shaped by her Magnificat education.

MEREDITH (“TOM”) PERSINGER You never know who you might meet in a Cleveland Clinic waiting room. Meredith (“Tom”) Persinger, a West Virginia lawyer, met a Magnificat parent there three years ago who was, coincidentally, interested in learning more about the West Virginia University engineering program for their daughter. Admittedly, Tom was not able to help much regarding WVU, as he had attended a Jesuit university for college and law school. He was impressed, however, by the family’s commitment to Catholic education, evidenced by a then recent St. Ignatius graduate as well

as a Magnificat daughter. Tom never forgot the kindness he encountered in that Magnificat parent, and as a beneficiary and supporter of Catholic education, he began supporting Magnificat annually through Night-in-Blue and the annual Gala. As he continues to learn more about Magnificat, Tom is confident his gifts will be leveraged effectively to the benefit of many. From his perspective, “If everyone does something, however modest, to open the Magnificat education and formation to more students, the cumulative effect will be impactful.”
