LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT AND BOARD CHAIRPERSON Dear Friends, The 2019-2020 fiscal year was one for the history books! As a community, we accomplished many great things in an extraordinarily unusual year. We began the year as we would any other, celebrating the beginning of the school year and reunion milestones. In October, we publicly launched the Building Excellence Together campaign, allowing the school’s science spaces to be transformed into the new Sisters of the Humility of Mary Center for Science Exploration and Innovation. This transformation is remarkable and affords our students unprecedented STEM learning opportunities. We look forward to welcoming you to campus to see it for yourselves when we can safely do so. In February, the Magnificat community came together for our first-ever Giving Day to support The Magnificat Fund, which provides us with the resources to continue to expand academic, athletic, co-curricular, and faith-formation offerings for students. We are proud to announce that The Magnificat Fund had another record-breaking year, raising $390,000 in support of our Mission. In March, when the world seemed to come to a screeching halt, the Magnificat Community continued to support the school in honor of Sister Helen Jean Novy, HM through our virtual Gala and by providing critical financial aid to families through the COVID-19 Emergency Tuition Assistance Fund. The good news that follows in this annual report is a testament to the unwavering spirit and generosity of the Magnificat community. Your support creates innovative, inspiring opportunities for our students to discover how they can best live Mary’s Magnificat in the world. Thank you for the many ways you continue to support Magnificat. Gratefully,

Moira Clark ’77 President

Gifts in Honor of Sr. Helen Jean Novy Making an honor or memorial gift to Magnificat is a tremendous way to pay tribute to a loved one while helping advance the Mission of Magnificat High School. This year saw an abundance of tribute gifts made in honor of Sister Helen Jean Novy, H.M. as she prepared to embark on a new adventure— retirement. Plans were set to gather as a community and celebrate her remarkable 45 years of service to Magnificat at the Gala on March 21; however, the school’s closure due to the pandemic came just a week prior. Instead, the Magnificat Community gathered virtually that weekend, notes of gratitude and congratulations were sent via email, and later in the summer, a small group gathered outside of Magnificat as Sr. Helen Jean was presented with her portrait painted by Chloe Becker ’20, which will hang in Magnificat’s new Sisters of the Humility Center for Science Exploration and Innovation. As the notes to Sr. Helen Jean came in, certain themes began to emerge. Many Magnificat alumnae from across different decades reminisced about her presence at their sporting events, or simply in the hallways during class changes. Her welcoming nature and constant presence made so many feel at home at Magnificat. A former Magnificat parent wrote, “Maybe the second time I visited Magnificat as my daughter was touring the school I met you for the first time. You saw us as new faces, came and sat near us and started a nice conversation — your extreme genuineness, gentleness, joy, humility, and faith truly caught me off guard. Every time I have run into you since you show those same qualities. Our daughters, Magnificat, and the community are so blessed by you.”

6

MAGNIFICAT HIGH SCHOOL

Sister Helen Jean is a ray of sunshine, like no other! Never have I met a person who exhibits the God-given joy that each and every day brings. Losing my mother the summer before Freshman year was rough. Sister had a smile on her face every day for every person. That meant so much to me, and I have carried that throughout my life. At my niece's graduation ten years ago, she knew exactly who I was, and showed me love and respect, about the wonderful life I have had, even having lost someone so important at an important time of life. I will never forget that, and only hope my four daughters encounter such a lovely and giving person in their lifetime. Thank you, Sister, and God grant you many more wonderful years!! ~Judy Zeber George ’85

Another theme throughout the notes was a deep gratitude for Sr. Helen Jean’s Daily Prayers. They are another way Sister continues to connect and unite the Magnificat Community, as so many alumnae, parents, and friends of Magnificat begin each day in the same way with her prayers. A 1992 alumna writes, “Thank you so much for your written and emailed daily prayers. For years I’ve looked forward to them in my inbox each day and I start my daily morning prayer with you each and every day here in California. Thank you for continuing to enrich my prayer life and spirituality over the years, even across the country virtually!” In her new role as Vice President of Mission Emerita, Sr. Helen Jean will continue to support the school for special projects, new forms of pastoral presence, and continuation of her Daily Prayer and Circle of Prayer emails. “My years at Magnificat have been a precious treasure with such wonderful students, inspired teachers, dedicated staff, insightful leaders, committed parents, generous donors, provident Board members, faithful alumnae, friends, and HM Sponsors. I have been so touched by kindnesses I’ve received throughout the years and on the occasion of my retirement from formal roles in leadership and Mission. My deepest gratitude to all who have supported me and Magnificat. May they all receive a hundredfold of blessings! I am so proud of the young women of Magnificat who are and will be such transforming models of faith, hope, and love to their families, friends, church, and world.”

Dear Sister Helen Jean, Congratulations as you celebrate 45 years of dedicated service to Magnificat High School. I have been associated with Magnificat for 36 years with my daughter and now my granddaughter. I have always been amazed at the relationships you develop with the girls as well as with their parents and their extended family. You are truly a special gift! I look for your daily prayer every morning as I begin my day. It is amazing how it zeros in on my current issues. Thank you for your direction as I follow the path of our dear Lord. God bless as you enter retirement. I highly recommend it. ~Cathie Noga

Dear Sister Helen Jean, I want to thank you for the daily prayer emails. They have been a wonderful way to start each day. I am amazed at how each one has addressed issues that have been pertinent for me at the time that I have read them. Thanks for the supportive guidance in each prayer. May you find joy in the next aspect of your life. I suspect it won’t be sitting in a rocker on the front porch! ~Kathleen Smith Zupan ’65

I worked at Magnificat in the late 80s and was Sister Carolyn’s Secretary. It was clear from my first day there, Sister Helen Jean was the kind of person we all aspire to be. Her faith and optimism were obvious in everything she did. She is the holiest person I ever met. She touched my life and gave me hope. I knew that God put me there to meet her and see how faith and devotion live through others. I am humbled and grateful for that. As life’s challenges happen, I try to ask myself... “What would Sister Helen Jean do?” ~Judy Krueger 2019-2020 REPORT TO THE COMMUNITY

Faculty and Staff Invest in Magnificat Today for Tomorrow’s Students Magnificat faculty and staff invest their time and talents in our students every day. So when they choose to also make a philanthropic gift to the school, it is a strong statement of their belief in and support of Magnificat High School. Last year, more than 80 members of our faculty and staff made a gift to Magnificat. Many chose to give to The Magnificat Fund, while others chose the Building Excellence Together Capital Campaign or a Named Endowed Scholarship. Regardless of the amount or designation of their gift, the impact of their giving is immeasurable. Marybeth Metro McCormick ’86, who recently returned to Magnificat as the school nurse, says, “I give back to Magnificat because in 1986 I didn't appreciate at the time all that Magnificat gave to me. Now that I am back walking the same halls 34 years later, I realize what a special place this school is. I appreciate the sacrifices my parents made to send me to Magnificat, the education, and the staff and teachers. I would like to provide others with an experience like my own.” Physical education and health teacher Gloria Polzer supported the school through a gift to the Building Excellence Together campaign because of the transformative effect Magnificat has on its students. “I strongly believe in the Mission of this school, and I love this place,” she said. “I want every girl that wants to come here to have the

8

MAGNIFICAT HIGH SCHOOL

opportunity to do so. This school will change [her] life." For math teacher Cheryl Simecek ’90, making a gift to the campaign was an investment in STEM education. “I believe it is important to provide a physical space where excellence in science education can be achieved,” she said. “Many of our graduates pursue STEM fields in their post-secondary education and are engaging in meaningful and innovative careers. Supporting the capital campaign to renovate the science spaces was an important way to support the continued growth of our young women.” In many instances, foundations and corporations that are able to make large financial grants to the school review giving percentages from faculty, staff, alumnae, and parents to gauge the commitment of our Magnificat community. As the percentage of employees giving back increases, so does the likelihood of Magnificat being able to secure additional funds from foundations. This fact was echoed by an anonymous staff member who said, “As a Magnificat employee, I want to show that I’m ‘all in’ by contributing, and I know my gifts, however modest, help to strengthen our school and community by increasing the likelihood of support from foundations and businesses.” Some of our faculty members choose to make a gift even in their first year of teaching. As one

“I give as an employee, an alumna, and a past parent because I believe in the quality of education, the Mission, and single-gender education. I'd like to ensure that students today and in the future will be able to have a Magnificat education and become lifelong learners and leaders in our world.” ~Anonymous employee said, “It was one more way I could be a part of this awesome community.” For others, like current Theology teacher Mary Clare Fanta Oberst '75, the connection to Magnificat and the reason for giving goes much farther back. “My family has been invested in Catholic education, specifically Magnificat, all my life. I have wonderful memories as a student having my dad at NIB as chairman and returning each year to participate. As the oldest of eight children, my parents made sacrifices to send me and my two sisters to Magnificat. I followed in that tradition by sending my daughters and then returning as a member of the faculty. It has been an honor and a privilege to witness what Magnificat has become in my twenty-plus years on the faculty and I hope to continue to be able to contribute to its growth and excellence.”

Bill and Theresa Francis Kathryn Francis Haneline ’05 Christine Francis Ciullo ’07 Laura Francis Schneider ’10 Anne Francis ’11

“We strongly believe that a faith-based, single-gender education is so beneficial for the formation of young women.” This year, nearly 500 parents of alumnae made a gift to Magnificat High School. Even though their daughters have graduated, they continue to make Magnificat a priority in their giving, many times because they understand more than anyone what an impact Magnificat can have on preparing their daughters for their future. Theresa and Bill Francis are no different. Their first priority in choosing a high school for their four daughters nearly twenty years ago was to ensure a solid Catholic education. They knew that Magnificat could provide that along with a strong college preparatory curriculum. It was the holistic aspects of their education that made the difference, however. Theresa and Bill both said the Kairos experience had a profound impact on each of their daughters, and credit clubs, sports, “and particularly the dance team” for each playing a role in their daughters’ holistic education.

Theresa and Bill Francis

As supporters of the Mission of Magnificat, and knowing the difference it could make in their daughters, Theresa and Bill each got involved on a personal level. Bill joined the Board of Directors in 2005. “It was rewarding to help steer Magnificat in fulfilling its Mission,” Bill said. Theresa volunteered in many capacities, mainly the annual Gala. She also helped coordinate many Mothers’ Club events,

such as dances, after-prom, and the Mothers’ Club Senior Mass & Luncheon. Perhaps the most memorable moment for them, however, was one of their last as Magnificat parents, as their youngest daughter Annie gave the commencement speech to her graduating class in 2011. “She presented like a pro,” Theresa and Bill said. When their oldest daughter, Kathryn, began her freshman year at Magnificat, the Francis family made their first gift to the school. They have given nearly every year since. “We strongly believe that a faith-based, singlegender education is so beneficial for the formation of young women. The world is not always fair and balanced, but we feel that Magnificat helped prepare our daughters for the next step. By financially supporting the school even after our girls graduated, we might help others who might not have that opportunity without that financial support.” Magnificat is so grateful for the support of the Francis family and so many others like them who continue to make gifts long after their daughters have left our halls. It is a powerful statement of belief in the Magnificat Mission and the school's future.

Bridget Barrett ’86 Of her experience as a student at Magnificat, Bridget Barrett '86 says, “The girls I met all those years ago have become my life-long friends, like family. Madame Ethel Kilo, Mrs. Molly Allison Rose ’77, and Mrs. Donna Dowling Sheridan ’61 encouraged me to be curious, to love and appreciate reading and learning, all which remain with me today. My biggest takeaway from my time at Magnificat is to never forget that it is not about me. I am a small part of something much bigger and more important. I must be an active participant in building and sustaining my communities.”

serve on Magnificat’s Board of Directors, bringing the number of alumnae professionals on the Board to ten.

Bridget was still a student of political science at Catholic University of America when she began to support Magnificat High School. After joining Starbucks Coffee Company and relocating several times over her 18-year career, she took advantage of Starbucks’ matching gift program and doubled the impact of her gifts.

Volunteering at Magnificat has deepened her understanding of the importance of philanthropy and has allowed her to view the school in a whole new way. Bridget points to the expanded art programs, sports opportunities, the new Sisters of the Humility of Mary Center for Science Exploration, and the unique Design Learning concept as a just a few of the ways Magnificat is setting itself apart from other schools. “My participation as a volunteer gives me the confidence to speak on the kind of education Magnificat delivers today. It is exciting to be a part of the future of Magnificat.” She believes that there is a unique power in an all-girls learning environment with Magnificat’s high standards and commitment to developing young women to be faith-filled leaders.

As fate would have it, Bridget moved home to Cleveland in 2015 and began a new role as a marketing executive for Great Lakes Brewing Company, and the Board of Directors wasted no time recruiting her to serve as a volunteer on the Marketing Committee of the Magnificat Board. In fact, while serving on the committee, she was honored in December 2019 by Crain's Cleveland Business as one of Cleveland's top C-level marketing executives for her commitment to the greater Cleveland community and professional integrity. Earlier this year, Bridget accepted an invitation to

In a strategic move for Magnificat’s future, Bridget has decided to include Magnificat in her estate plan even though she plans to be around for a very long time. “Nothing is more important to me than ensuring any young woman can benefit from access to a Magnificat education, regardless of circumstance. I don’t really consider myself to be philanthropic. I believe at some point, we all need a helping hand. Everyone has a gift they can give to support another.” She wants to ensure that Magnificat continues to build on its foundation of Learn, Lead, and Serve.

Pat Kennedy Each year, Magnificat parents support the school with their time, talent, and treasure in many ways. A perfect example of this is Pat Kennedy and his family. The Kennedy family members have been lifelong supporters of Magnificat, and their roots run deep. Pat’s mother (Marilyn Maher Kennedy ’61), sisters (Nina Kennedy Varga ’88, Kathleen Kennedy Mulgrew ’89, Anne Marie Kennedy Gilliam ’94, and Brigid Kennedy Chambers ’95), nieces (Brenna Varga ’20, Carys Varga ’21, Caitlin Varga ’24, and Grace Chambers ’24), and now his daughter (Camryn Kennedy ’22) have all attended Magnificat, and the school has had a positive impact on each of them. "We all feel at home there,” Pat says. “Our daughter is becoming a complete, well-rounded young woman. She is becoming a well-educated leader focused on serving others." The Kennedys are true models of servant leadership, committing significant amounts of time to the Magnificat community. Over the years, the Kennedys have been active community members, attending choir concerts and Masses in the PAC, Night-in-Blue raffles, and volunteering at numerous school events. It is also not uncommon to see Pat volunteering his time in the Magnificat Bookstore, organizing Fathers’ Club events in his role as President, and

making phone calls to current parents to support The Magnificat Fund. "We have always tried to get involved in whatever our children are engaged in; we do this to teach our children the importance of being involved and giving back to the community. Hopefully, they will be inspired to continue our example," Pat says. To show their appreciation for all that Magnificat has given to their family over the span of three generations, they began donating to The Magnificat Fund in 2018 in memory of his father, James Kennedy. He said of his philanthropy, "The school will be part of us much longer than the four years our daughter will be a student here, and we will continue to support The Magnificat Fund because we believe in the importance of Catholic education and want to see the school prosper for years to come." Pat believes it is important for current parents to support The Magnificat Fund, as they not only impact their daughter’s education with their contributions, but they also allow Magnificat to continue to provide rigorous academics, innovative programming, and inspiring leadership development, grounded in the values and traditions of the Sisters of Humility of Mary, to all students. Liz Kalfas ’98 Big-Little week, Night-in-Blue, warm chocolate chip cookies, uniforms, choir, late nights working on the yearbook, and a senior retreat she described as transformational for her—these are just some of the Magnificat memories Liz Kalfas counts among her favorites. However, she added that “none of it would have mattered without all of the incredible women I met: students, staff, and faculty. Sharing space with women who wanted to support each other was something I took for granted at the time and only came to fully appreciate years later.”

Liz Kalfas and her cousin Alex.

Social justice and service top Liz’s list of the most important lessons she learned about at Magnificat. “Attending a private, Catholic all-girls high school is a privilege in many ways, the greatest for me were the numerous opportunities I had to put my faith and Catholic upbringing into action in the greater community, beyond Mags or my parish. My Magnificat sisters and I were blessed with the tremendous good fortune of having some incredibly inspiring, strong women who set faith-filled examples through their daily life and challenged us to do the same — Ms. Powell, Mrs. Clark, Mrs. D-K, Ms. Dabrowski, Sr. Helen Jean, Sr. Mary Pat, and too many others to name. They helped me to become brave enough to ask the question, ‘How can I use my life to make a meaningful impact on others and my community?’” After Magnificat, Liz moved on to Canisius College, where she earned a bachelor degree in psychology

12

MAGNIFICAT HIGH SCHOOL

and communications studies and a master of science in student personnel administration. Liz is currently the Director of Regional Development for the Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine, and Magnificat is fortunate to have Liz as an advocate and a former member of the Alumnae Board. When asked why she counts Magnificat among her philanthropic priorities, Liz says, “I believe strongly in the education and empowerment of young women. We need brave, broad-minded women who are ready to meet the challenges of the world and not be afraid to lead with heart. Giving to Magnificat gives me a seat at the table, as a donor and an alumna. It allows me opportunities to stay connected to this ever-evolving educational institution, the Mission, and the students, while also granting me a small way to pay forward all that I gained during my time as a student.” She credits her parents for teaching her at an early age to put her faith in action by supporting causes that are important to her through philanthropy or service. Liz recommends making philanthropy part of your monthly budget and taking advantage of the option to have recurring gifts deducted automatically each month. “I have auto-pay set for my bills, why not my charitable giving? Working as a professional fundraiser has also given me an insider's perspective on the critical role all gifts play in an organization's ability to sustain and advance the mission. Each donor matters, each dollar makes a difference.”

Crista Spehar Adamczyk ’04 After graduating from Magnificat, Crista continued her Catholic education at John Carroll University where she earned a bachelor’s degree in communications before moving on to Cleveland State University for an MBA. She had a vibrant career as a marketing communications professional until the birth of her twins, Grant and Rhett, who Crista and her husband Jason welcomed in February 2020. Grant and Rhett joined siblings Cole (5), Nathan (3), and Grace (2). Magnificat was fortunate to have Crista as an active Alumnae Board volunteer for several years as her family grew! Like many alumnae, Crista speaks fondly of the lifelong friendships and sisters she found at Magnificat, a group she describes as eclectic with a wide range of interests cultivated at Magnificat. “My closest friends participated in athletics, forensics, band, theatre, art, dance, faith-formation groups, and plenty more. Magnificat allowed each of us to be unique, but tied us together as Blue Streaks. Despite life taking my friends to different universities, states, and even countries, our shared experiences while at Magnificat were so formative and special that our bonds of friendship are as strong as ever.” Crista is especially grateful for learning about Magnificat’s patroness, Mary. “It was during my time at Magnificat—in theology class, on retreats, and in

student prayer groups, that I began to really learn and fall in love with the Mother of Christ. Mary is a shining example for all young women...in answering God's call to serve, she shared and sacrificed her most precious gift, her Son, to save all of us.” When asked why she chooses to support Magnificat, Crista readily replied, “The world needs strong women of faith now more than ever. The world needs Magnificat women. This school provides a safe place for young women to learn, lead, and serve in the spirit of Mary's Magnificat. Magnificat students and alumnae bring Christ into the world. The Magnificat community is fulfilling its call to serve Catholic youth, and I want to support that mission.” Crista is a great example of an alumna who has opted to break up her gifts to Magnificat into managable, monthly payments, which can be easily set up online at www.magnificaths.org/giving. She said scheduling a recurring gift was an easy way for a busy young mom like herself. Crista offers this advice for aspiring philanthropists who want to pay it forward and invest in Magnificat: “I'd like to emphasize that the act of giving is what's important. Perhaps there will be opportunity for larger monetary donations in the future, but right now, the act of simply giving to a community that has given us so much is what matters the most.”

Back Row: Jason holding Rhett and Crista holding Grant; Front Row (L-R) Cole, Nathan and Grace.

Ways to Give

All gifts to Magnificat, no matter the size, leave a lasting impression on current and future Blue Streaks. There are many ways Magnificat is able to tailor your giving experience. Let us help you find the right option that is best for you.

Recurring Monthly Gifts

Automatic monthly giving enables you to easily manage a gift to Magnificat High School. Setting up a recurring gift allows you to break up a larger annual gift into a more manageable, budget-friendly amount.

Cash Gifts and Online Giving

The simplest way to support Magnificat is through cash gifts and online giving. You can either mail your donation to the school or visit our website.

Appreciated Securities and Gifts of Stock

Magnificat High School accepts donations of securities that are held for more than one year. Donors are permitted to use the full value of the security at the time of donation as a tax deduction, while avoiding any capital gains tax.

Gifts of Property

Magnificat High School accepts donations of a donor’s property, including residence, vacation homes, jewelry, art, etc. The specialized help of appraisers and tax advisors is necessary to make gifts of property.

Create a Legacy with Planned Giving

Planned giving offers tax benefits and the opportunity to make meaningful contributions in support of Magnificat’s Mission without parting with cash today. Life insurance, IRAs, wills, and trusts are examples of planned gifts, often referred to as deferred gifts.

Cash Gifts and Online Giving Donor-Advised Funds

A donor-advised fund, which is like a charitable savings account, gives you the flexibility to recommend how much and how often money is granted to Magnificat High School and other qualified charities.

Matching Gift Program

If you or your spouse work for a company that matches gifts to secondary schools, your contributions can have double the impact. Ask your employer or your spouse's employer for information on how they will match your gift.

For more information please visit our website magnificaths.org/giving or contact Amy Kubacki, VP of Advancement, or Meg Chochola, Senior Director of Development, at 440-331-7227.
