LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT AND BOARD CHAIRPERSON Dear Friends,

Though our traditional milestones were quite different last year, the virtual nature of many events welcomed alumnae and friends across the country to engage in ways they never have before. Our 63rd Annual Night-in-Blue fundraiser saw remarkable support with record-breaking sponsorships and over 900 spaghetti dinners sold via drive-though. “Late Night with Magnificat,” our first live virtual gala garnered widespread popularity thanks to the hard work of our committee; the creativity of our students; and the commitment of alumnae, families, and friends far and wide. And, our second annual Giving Day far surpassed the goal that had been set by the previous year’s support. Finally, the Building Excellence Together capital campaign had a strong finish this summer as we reached our $7.75 million goal to ensure the longevity of Magnificat’s strong academic, athletic, and co-curricular programming through updated and innovative state-of-the-art spaces on campus. Your continued commitment to our school’s mission to educate young women holistically to learn, lead, and serve in the spirit of Mary’s Magnificat is what propels us forward in these times that continue to be so challenging for our world. We stand on the strong shoulders of the Sisters of the Humility of Mary, who had a prophetic and profound vision for educating faith-filled women leaders. Thank you for all you do to help us continue bringing their vision to life. Gratefully,

Moira Clark ’77 President

Colleen Moran O’Neil ’88 Board Chairperson

1 2020-2021 REPORT

The 2020-2021 school year has been named by many as the most challenging year in recent history for educators throughout our region, country, and world. And yet, at every turn, our families, faculty/staff, alumnae, and friends rose to the occasion to ensure that our students would continue to receive an in-person, holistic Magnificat education — one that tended to students’ social, emotional, and spiritual wellbeing while providing both rigorous and supportive academic programming. We offer our sincerest thanks to all who made this historic school year such a success amid so many challenges.

TO THE COMMUNITY

We bring you this annual report with hearts filled with gratitude for the countless ways in which the Magnificat Community — once again — came through with remarkable support for our students and our mission last year.

YEAR IN REVIEW 2020-21 OCTOBER

HIGH SCHOOL

Since students could not travel to the Community Center of the Sisters of the Humility of Mary, Campus Ministry hosted mini “Freshman Heritage Days” on campus where students spent time learning about the history and charism of the Sisters, reflecting and praying together, and living out the HM’s commitment to care for creation.

NOVEMBER

AUGUST

Students returned to the building for the first time since March 2020; Magnificat would continue in-person learning with the option to stream for the duration of the school year. In addition to daily coursework, the co-curricular, faith-formation, and athletic activities that contribute to Magnificat’s holistic approach were able to continue with modifications to ensure the health and safety of all.

The school community rallied together for Night-in-Blue, with students reaching 167 percent of the fundraising goal, setting an all-time record for the 63-year-old timehonored tradition. Students and parent volunteers prepared and served over 900 pasta dinners in Night-inBlue’s first-ever drive-through event.

APRIL

After being accepted to Magnificat in February, members of the Class of 2025 were welcomed to campus for the first time as official Blue Streaks. Students and their families had the chance to meet members of the Leadership Team, student ambassadors, and school counselors to learn more about the many academic, co-curricular, and faithformation opportunities they will have as students.

The Magnificat Board of Directors and Leadership Team began a strategic planning process that will determine the school’s goals and direction for the next five years. After gathering input from key constituents throughout the summer and fall, the plan will be finalized and presented to the community by the end of 2021.

MARCH

MARCH

The annual Gala took on the format of a late-night talk show featuring live coverage from the HM Center for Science Exploration & Innovation along with student-produced commercials and late-night gimmicks. For the second year in a row, the virtual format for the Gala meant that out-ofstate alumnae and friends could participate in this event that’s so crucial in raising funds for tuition assistance.

The Class of 2021 celebrated their graduation from Magnificat with Dad Prom, the Mother-Daughter Mass & Luncheon, the Big-Little Challenge Cup Competition, Senior Prom, and finally a combined Baccalaureate Mass & Commencement on Karnatz Family Field. Graduates of the Class of 2021 are attending 52 colleges and universities this fall.

College: The University of Miami in Coral Gables, Florida Studying: Undeclared Business or Possibly Marketing Academically, Magnificat prepared me for the future through a rigorous course load and the amazing teachers that pushed me to be the best. Playing basketball at Magnificat also prepared me for the future because I gained invaluable leadership skills, learned to collaborate with my teammates, and practiced resilience and hard work. Additionally, being a leader for the Student Ambassadors Club showed me the importance of community, which has become one of my core values as I look to get involved in college.

Mariana Ramos-Andujar College: The Ohio State University Studying: Computer Science

Magnificat prepared me for the future in many different ways. In my classes at Magnificat, I learned to be a critical thinker with almost everything I did. We researched everything new that we learned and then analyzed the data. In my classes here at Ohio State, I have already used these very skills to find and analyze good research and data to use in my work—just as I was taught to do by my Magnificat teachers. This knowledge will stay with me throughout my life and help me as I develop my career.

Keara Kelly

College: University of Notre Dame Studying: Finance with a minor in Real Estate Magnificat certainly prepared me well for this new chapter of my life. After challenging myself to take rigorous classes in high school, I feel ready for the hard work needed to succeed at Notre Dame. My experiences in entrepreneurship class and as president of the Marketing Club helped me to decide to pursue a degree in business. Being a student leader of Ambassadors’ Club and a member of Outreach Club helped me develop leadership qualities and understand the strength of community building. All of these experiences and opportunities at Magnificat helped make my transition to Notre Dame much easier!

During my time at Magnificat I was so lucky to gain the knowledge and confidence that will help me succeed far beyond high school and into life. I found my passion for the world around us and it inspired me to become part of the change. I found God in my everyday tasks— in ways that I will continue to use for the rest of my life. The Dance Team shaped who I am and how I face hardships. After finding my love for dance on Magnificat’s Dance Team, I will be continuing my dance career on the collegiate Wisconsin Dance Team. Because of Magnificat I am ready and prepared for this next chapter.

Because of Magnificat, I am entering the world with the knowledge and confidence I need to be a real changemaker in society. Throughout the past four years, my classmates, coaches, and teachers always pushed me to achieve the highest forms of success. Furthermore, my leadership experience with the Magnificat Speech and Debate Team, Students in Medicine, and more gave me a greater outlook of the world and of the human race as a whole. These experiences have helped me discover my desire to create large-scale change for the betterment of our society.

Magnificat uniquely prepared me for the college experience by actively empowering me to develop my own ideas and express them passionately and persuasively through engaging and challenging classes. Extracurriculars like Ambassadors Club and the National Honor Society instilled the value of service to others while allowing me to mature as a leader. As I embark on the next chapter of my education as a Division I student-athlete (soccer) at the College of the Holy Cross, I am truly thankful for the holistic education I received at Magnificat.

W H Y I S U P P O R T T H E Y O U N G W O M E N O F M AG N I F I C AT Bachelor’s Degree: Butler University, Arts Administration Best Advice for Magnificat Students: Pray often. Sing joyfully. Be kind. Find the best in others, as you will learn and grow from one another. Why did you choose Magnificat for your high school? I chose Magnificat for its loving, encouraging, and safe environment. I knew it would be a place where I could grow spiritually, emotionally, and academically. The quality and engaging manner of the faculty and staff set Magnificat apart from other schools I had toured. I am thankful my parents allowed me to make my own choice for high school!

HIGH SCHOOL

What were your biggest takeaways from Magnificat? My biggest takeaway was the ability to celebrate and embrace one another’s unique gifts and talents. I think this is directly related to a truly immersive mission of learning, leading, and serving in the spirit of Mary’s Magnificat. It was truly a joyful and grateful way to approach life and people. “My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord. My spirit rejoices in God my Savior.” We each celebrated the greatness of God’s creation in each other. This resulted in the building up of one another and great personal growth. What would you like to share about your post-Magnificat journey? The confidence and comfort I gained in myself during high school prepared me to navigate the changes and challenges of college. I married my college sweetheart in 2007, and we soon moved to Okinawa, Japan. This changed my professional life a bit, but music always remained at the center of my work. Over the past fifteen years, I have taught private voice, violin, and piano lessons, directed choirs, managed education programs, and coordinated fundraising efforts for arts nonprofits.

Why have you continued to support Magnificat? I hope that Magnificat will continue to be a place to form young women leaders, and a continued center of excellence in Catholic education in Northeast Ohio. I firmly believe that our continued financial support ensures the future of Magnificat. My Magnificat experience was so wonderful - I want to make sure that it is available to generations of young women to come. Do you have a favorite Magnificat memory? Did you have a favorite class or teacher? I have a number of great musical memories, including singing in the choir at the graduation ceremonies and singing with the show choir at the Rock ’n Roll Hall of Fame. There were also many great memories—decorating lockers, making kites in physics class, engaging history classes with Ms. Hebda, a lifelong friend in Becky Prada, and reliving “The Count of Monte Cristo” in French Class with Madame Roache!

What surprises you most about Magnificat and the way it has changed or not changed since you graduated? Learning at Magnificat is dynamic! My daughter, Caroline, has so many amazing class offerings that we didn’t have. The technology and collaborative learning opportunities really create a unique learning environment. The cocurricular activities and educational travel options have also expanded! Why do you support Magnificat? What do you hope Magnificat will achieve in the near future? Long term? My husband and I are committed to supporting both of our high schools because they were impactful on the people we are today and the relationships we cherish. I want Magnificat students to have the opportunities that I did. I want Magnificat to have the tools and resources they need to educate young women. Do you have a favorite Magnificat memory? I have great memories of high school, filled with lots of laughter with so many amazing people. My favorite memories were having big sisters as freshmen, the candy line, our junior year Night-inBlue skit, senior retreat, and graduation.

17 2020-2021 REPORT

What is unique to you about Magnificat? Since it’s a regional school, I met girls from all over Cleveland. I loved getting to know so many new people. This was such an important part of my experience at Magnificat. Truly, the unique thing about Magnificat is that it is a community. Members of the Magnificat community are united and share a special bond. What really sets Magnificat apart are the people—students, families, teachers, and staff. I would encourage other parents to challenge their daughters to get involved, meet new friends, and explore their faith, new classes, and co-curricular activities. Parents should get involved, too! Become a part of the Magnificat community!

TO THE COMMUNITY

What were your biggest takeaways from Magnificat? My years at Magnificat changed me. I didn’t recognize or appreciate the opportunities I had at the time. As a student, I was challenged and encouraged to ask questions. The culture at Magnificat encouraged me to work hard as a student, and I felt safe and respected enough to be myself. I had kind, nurturing teachers—and also really, really tough ones. As an all-girls school, Magnificat gave me the opportunity to focus on my relationships with classmates. Experiences like senior retreat formed bonds that remain strong 25 years later.

NAMED ENDOWED SCHOALRSHIPS

W H Y I S U P P O R T T H E Y O U N G W O M E N O F M AG N I F I C AT Why do you choose to support Magnificat? My experience at Lourdes was memorable and precious in almost all respects, and in gratitude to the Sisters of the Humility of Mary and fellow graduates and to honor family members, I established the Deucher Family Lourdes Scholarship. Two aunts and an aunt by marriage attended Lourdes, as did my sister and I and our two cousins. My niece, Laura Hoye Sowul ’87 is a Magnificat graduate, and her daughter, Theresa, graduated this past spring.

HIGH SCHOOL

Why did you choose Lourdes Academy? Lourdes had a very good reputation. It was also conveniently located! The teachers, almost all HMs, were rigorous and well prepared; in the jargon of undergraduates of my day, they “knew their stuff.”

MAGNIFICAT

20

Was there a particular teacher who inspired you the most? There were so many wonderful teachers who influenced me—Sister Ellen Francis (Sr. Mary Hurley, ’44 Lourdes) for chemistry; Sister Dominica who was dynamo of knowledge and enthusiasm about music, Sister Mary of Lourdes (Sr. Bernadette Vetter) who coached us to successes in competitive forensics and one-act play contests, and Sister Mary of the Angels, who was the moderator for our school newspaper, the Lourdes Light—just to name a few. The most valuable gifts I carried away from my time at Lourdes came from friendships with other students and in particular associations with the Sisters. Beyond their dedication to teaching Retired Associate Professor of English, and learning, I especially treasure their examples of patience, respect, and, above Duquesne University all, kindness, both to myself and to fellow Founder and first director of students in exchanges that I witnessed.

Dr. Constance Deucher Ramirez ’54, Lourdes Academy

the University Honors College; cofounder of the Master of Science in Environmental Science and Management; Assistant VP for University Programs; Dean of the McAnulty College and Graduate School of Liberal Arts PhD, University of Pittsburgh MA, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Woodrow Wilson Fellow

What do I hope Magnificat will achieve in future? I hope the school will stay on track in its commitment to academic excellence, as also in its commitment to forming wise, compassionate, faith-filled young women; in short, that it will preserve and perpetuate the legacy of the Sisters of the Humility of Mary. I trust the legacy lives on, in student and alumna contributions to church, society, the world itself, in ways never imagined even ten years ago much less 60 or 70.

IN MEMORY OF

Chuck Geschke

The Magnificat community mourns the loss of Dr. Chuck Geschke who passed away on April 16, 2021. Chuck Geschke may be best known as the trail-blazing computer scientist who founded Adobe with a friend and colleague, but he, along with his wife, Nan McDonough Geschke ’60, will be forever appreciated at Magnificat for gifting the school with its first-ever gift of $1 million in 2008. This remarkable gift was added to the endowed scholarship fund they began years before in memory of Nan’s sister, Kathleen McDonough Clement ’63. Thanks to their boundless generosity and commitment to providing a strong Catholic education to young women who may not otherwise be able to afford it, dozens of young women have benefitted from The Kathleen McDonough Clement Endowed Scholarship here at Magnificat.

All gifts to Magnificat, no matter the size, leave a lasting impression on current and future Blue Streaks. There are many ways Magnificat is able to tailor your giving experience. Let us help you find the right option that is best for you.

Cash Gifts and Online Giving

The simplest way to support Magnificat is through cash gifts and online giving. You can either mail your donation to the school or visit our website: magnificaths.org/giving.

Create a Legacy with Planned Giving

Planned gifts offer tax benefits and the opportunity to make meaningful contributions in support of Magnificat’s Mission without parting with cash today. Life insurance, IRAs, wills, and trusts are examples of planned gifts, often referred to as deferred gifts.

Donor-Advised Funds

A donor-advised fund, which is like a charitable savings account, gives you the flexibility to recommend how much and how often money is granted to Magnificat High School and other charitable organizations.

Appreciated Securities and Gifts of Stock

Magnificat accepts donations of securities that are held for more than one year. Donors are permitted to use the full value of the security at the time of donation as a tax deduction, while avoiding any capital gains tax.

Gifts of Property

Magnificat accepts donations of a donor’s property, including residences, jewelry, art, etc. The specialized help of appraisers and tax advisors is necessary to make gifts of property.

Matching Gift Program

If you or your spouse work for a company that matches gifts to secondary schools, your contributions can have double the impact. Ask your employer for more information on how they will match your gift. For more information regarding any of these options, please visit the Ways to Give page on the Magnificat website, or contact Deborah Durbin ’81, Vice President of Advancement, at ddurbin@maghs.org or 440.331.11572 x263.

Automatic monthly giving enables you to easily manage a gift to Magnificat High School. Setting up a recurring gift allows you to break up a larger annual gift into a more manageable, budget-friendly amount.
