The Messenger Tick…tock…tick…tock…tick!

Magnolia Baptist Church

"Every person a place to serve and a place to belong." December 2012

Are you ready for the end? Or perhaps a new beginning? Either way, buckle up, because we are well into the final countdown until the 2012 Mayan apocalypse, set for Dec. 21. That date corresponds to the end of the 13th b’ak’tun, or 144,000-day cycle, on the Maya Long Count calendar, marking a full cycle of creation, according to the ancient Maya. This milestone has triggered both fear and excitement in some subcultures, particularly online. Some see the day as a true doomsday, when the Earth will be destroyed in a planetary collision or other major disaster. Others see it as a day marking a new dawn of peace and unity. Others disregard the whole thing as ancient nonsense (I tend to fall into this group). Regardless of where you fall in the scope of conversation, December 21, 2012 is on the way. Barring an earlier cataclysmic event, the prophetic soup of ancient and contemporary religion, scientific speculation and pop culture buzz is ready to be served. Are you ready? If not, why not? Apocalypse predictions are a fairly frequent occurrence in western civilization. Most recently, radio preacher Harold Camping gained notoriety after predicting Judgement Day on May 21, 2011 and the end of the world on Oct. 21 of that year. Camping had initially claimed the world would end in 1994, later asserting he had gotten his Biblical math wrong; the real date, he said, would be Oct. 21, 2011. Which was wrong, but I suppose that’s o.k. too, as long as Camping is doing the math! I can remember conversations with Corrie about not being ready for the end. There was still so much I wanted to see. There were experiences yet to be encountered; adventures still to explore. I shake my head at that today. What is it about this world that draws our focus? What does this world offer that we don’t want to lose?

1st John 2:15-17 reads: “Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, love for the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh and the lust of the eyes and the pride of life, is not of the Father but is of the world. And the world passes away, and the

lust of it; but he who does the will of God abides forever.” Makes you rethink your Christmas list doesn’t it? In terms of dying, I am in no way ready to die. In terms of Heaven’s glory and seeing God on His throne, I echo John’s words from Revelation, “Even so Lord Jesus, come.” Nothing compares with the glory of God. Nothing matches Heaven’s splendor. So let the calendar draw to yet another close, but let your hearts ever remain wanting to see Jesus face-to-face. As C.S. Lewis once wrote, “Those who made the greatest difference in this world, were simply the ones who thought the most of the next.”
