The secret to great golf is actually not a secret. The only component of great golf is a game that is centered on a sound and fundamental principle. The golfers that excel and defeat others are the ones that have mastered the fundamentals of golf. Such golfers don't err in the sense that they avoid careless mistakes and they always do the required such as hitting easy putts that some miss due to a lack of focus or a burden of pressure. The best golfers are not always the ones that have the longest drives, the prettiest set up and swings, or the best clothing attire, but rather the ones that follow the strict regiment of rules rather than deviate. Golf fundamentals, the swing plane, and the sequence of motion in the golf swing are only the tip of the iceberg. We all remember from science lessons back in middle school that the tip of the iceberg represents between 15 and 20 percent of its total size. This is the same case with golf, as the sport is much more detailed and intricate than it may appear. This sport is much more than a ball being struck by a club into a hole. There are so many aspects to golf, and that is why the golfers that are fundamentally sound actually have a distinct and clear advantage over other golfers that have elementary knowledge of the game. Golf's great champions all know that pursuing a perfect swing is a waste of time. They invest most of their time, energy, and talent learning how to play the game which includes; golf strategy, course management, mental golf, short game mastery, and how to practice. The next time you go to a PGA Tour event, watch what "most" of the players are working on. After an hour or so of observing the to golfers, one will find that their secrets for success are really their short game excellence and the strenuous golf course strategy they execute. Tiger Woods without his strategic and mental skills would be a fairly successful low handicap golfer. A great accomplished and famous golfer, such as Tiger Woods, may lack a perfect golf swing but may still be the world's best and highest ranked player and may probably go on to win many tournaments. Tiger has rebuilt his golf swing three times since joining the Tour. He may not have been consistent, but he found a way to adjust consistently, offsetting any previous faults he may have. During those rebuilding efforts his swing was marginally effective, by his standards, but he continued to win because he has superior strategic and mental skills. That skill set of his is just an added bonus to the mastery he has in fundamentals. The fundamentals of golf teach one how to perform to the best of their abilities depending on whatever situation they are in. Therefore, Mr. Woods' excellence in this area makes him a cut above the rest. By learning this analogy of Tiger Woods and his excellence in fundamentals, many young golfers may hopefully follow suit.
