MOUNT ALBERT GRAMMAR SCHOOL FINE ART SHOW 2016
WELCOME TO THE MAGS FINE ART SHOW 2016 The Fine Art Feel-Good Show of the Year
We are pleased to introduce you to works from established and emerging New Zealand artists, hanging side by side in the third annual Mount Albert Grammar School Fine Art Show 2016. We are proud to exhibit a visual extravaganza of fine art, objects, sculpture and photography. This year we have added two events to the Art Show: amidst the knowns and the soon-to-be-knowns, selected Mount Albert Grammar School art students are also chosen to participate. A carefully curated exhibition of works on 20 x 20 cm canvases is displayed, where students have worked with the MAGS art department to create a spectacle. This exhibit will be judged and the winning students will be awarded prizes. All student artwork is available to purchase. Additionally, we are introducing the Small Sales Saturday/Sunday on the weekend: smaller works of functional art for those seeking fun, artisan bits and pieces to take home on the spot. Make sure to visit early, as when it sells, it goes! Diversity is celebrated and showcased when household names such as John Pule and Mark Wooller are viewed in conjunction with the evocative portraiture by German-born Delicia Sampero. The 2016 show offers a smorgasbord of paintings and prints, but ceramics and sculpture are an important part of the creative melting-pot too. Thank you for coming and enjoy! ARTIST IN RESIDENCE In the last week of Term 1, Year 10 and 12 Painting classes were given the opportunity to work with one of New Zealand’s top artists, Ms Sam Mitchell. The 2010 Wallace Arts Award winner helped students create an acrylic painting in her signature style, working directly onto perspex. She brought in one of her works for students to use as an example. Ms Mitchell was at MAGS for three days conducting workshops for six classes, rising to the challenge of working with some quite large classes. She said she really enjoyed her time here and commented on the enthusiasm of the students. Year 10 student Natalie Schoonbee said working with Ms Mitchell introduced her to a different way of painting. “She opened up our eyes to the various styles and inspirations we can use in our own work.” Year 12 student Eleanor Fletcher said: “Experimenting with texture and depth was a challenge; it has been such a great experience.”
