WELCOME This, the fourth year that the Mount Albert Grammar School Fine Art Show has been staged, promises to be the best yet. Ours is an art show which continually refreshes and innovates. New artists to the show such as Lucy Eglington, and Tanya Blong, are showcased alongside well-established New Zealand artists such as Max Gimblett, Karl Maughan and Reuben Paterson. Our talented student artists are also an integral part of the show and their works are exhibited in two formats. The small wooden blocks which were so popular last year are back in a beautifully curated wall of up to 200 works. Larger canvases and photographic pieces are also being displayed. All student artwork is available to purchase. The MAGS Fine Art Show brings together current and former students, private art collectors, investors and gallery owners. What a great feeling it is to purchase art at our show! You acquire a unique asset that you’ll enjoy in your home for years to come. At the same time you are supporting the local arts community, whilst also donating to the MAGS Foundation. To help us move towards being a more environmentally-friendly art show you will notice we have made a few changes this year. Our catalogue has been reinvented to a smaller programme. We now guide you to our Facebook page www.facebook.com/MtAlbertGrammarFineArtShow and the MAGS Fine Art Show website www.magsartshow.co.nz to read the artist profiles and view a selection of their artwork. We look forward to you joining us at the wonderful, vibrant Gala Evening, or during the Art Weekend. The Friends of MAGS Committee

A WORD FROM

THE HEADMASTER

PATRICK DRUMM HEADMASTER MOUNT ALBERT GRAMMAR SCHOOL

I am delighted to welcome you to our Fine Art Show for 2017. The show has cemented itself as a significant event in our annual school calendar and again promises to draw strong support from the wider Mount Albert community. The impressive exhibition combines artwork from current MAGS students along with that of artists from the broader New Zealand art community. I am grateful to members of the Friends of MAGS Committee whose hard work and organisational skills have produced an event of such quality. Proceeds from the sale of artwork will go the Mount Albert Grammar School Foundation with a focus this year on upgrading and modernising the multi-media facilities in the FW Gamble Hall – the heart of our school! Thank you again to our exhibiting artists and all who have contributed to what promises to be a stunning celebration of the Fine Arts at MAGS.

THE FOUNDATION

Investing in the future of the School

PETER THORP CHAIRMAN MOUNT ALBERT GRAMMAR SCHOOL FOUNDATION

The annual MAGS Fine Art Show is now well established as a most successful event that continues to attract the support of leading artists and the wider community. Thanks to the ongoing efforts of the Friends of MAGS, with the assistance of the MAGS Foundation’s Director of Advancement, Tim Kay, the show this year will again feature high quality art in high quality displays at a high quality event. By supporting the Art Show, you are supporting MAGS through the MAGS Foundation. The Foundation is a registered Charitable Trust that assists the school in its ongoing quest for excellence in all fields. The Foundation’s vision is to work with the school to make Mount Albert Grammar School New Zealand’s premier school. To achieve that vision the Foundation is working to create a culture of philanthropy within the school and its wider community. By your support as an artist, sponsor, volunteer, purchaser or just by attending you are all helping to achieve that vision. The cause is worthy and so is the event, so please support our 2017 Fine Art Show generously.

MAGS ARTIST IN RESIDENCE PROGRAMME

This exciting initiative is made possible with funds raised from previous Fine Art Shows. By hosting ‘Artist in Residence’ programmes, learning opportunities for students are enhanced while giving them exposure to contemporary practice and ideas. Two artists have visited this year – Sam Mitchell and Finn Wilson. 2010 Wallace Art award winner, Sam Mitchell returned in 2017 to show her ceramic work and provide advice and support for students in painting ceramic tiles ready for firing in the school kiln. “It was great having Sam show our students what can be achieved in ceramics with their existing painting skills. It revitalized our kiln which

will now be getting a lot more use at the request of the students,” said Acting Head of Visual Art, Bryn Corkery. The tiles created were displayed as part of a community art installation in Owairaka Domain to mark Matariki. “It was great to have such a successful New Zealand artist interact with students, while displaying the use of alternative paint media,” said Bryn. Professional street artist, Finn Wilson, discussed his work with students, and provided inspiration and assistance to experiment within his genre.

HAVING PROFESSIONAL ARTISTS VISIT THE SCHOOL ALLOWS OUR STUDENTS TO DISCOVER DIFFERENT WAYS OF SHARING THEIR OWN WORK TO THE PUBLIC WHICH THEY MAY NOT HAVE CONSIDERED BEFORE. BRYN CORKERY, ACTING HEAD OF VISUAL ART

Students heard how Finn has built a career with his art, exhibiting at galleries, art shows and taking commissions. Much of Finn’s work is created on skateboards and surfboards. He brought in skateboard bases, spray paint and paint pens for students to customise these decks with their own brand of street art. Bryn said it was encouraging to see how much the students, particularly the boys, enjoyed working in the genre. “We are keen to encourage more Junior boys to choose Art as an option so they can continue with Art subjects through the Senior years,” said Bryn. Selected student pieces will be exhibited at the 2017 MAGS Fine Art Show.

A WORD FROM THE CURATOR This year the MAGS Fine Art Show seems even more mind boggling to curate and hang than last year. I hope you find inspiration in the creativity on display and connect with the art, and therefore the artists. An Art Show is the ideal opportunity for taking the first step towards becoming a lover of art. However, in this show setting, the number of artworks, people and general buzz can be an overwhelming environment to make decisions. Please take your time viewing; be led by your heart and trust your instinct. Art is about creating an evocative reaction that is personal to you. It is subjective. The initial reaction that moves you, that reminds you of an experience or a person and makes you smile or get the warm fuzzies ... that is the trigger to buy. When buying from an artist/maker, you are buying more than just an object or painting. You are buying hundreds of hours of failures and experimentation. You are buying days, weeks and months of frustration and moments of pure joy. You are not just buying a thing ... you are buying

a piece of heart, part of a soul, a moment in someone’s life. Most importantly, you are buying the artist more time to do something they are passionate about. Be open to the possibility of purchasing art from an emerging artist. Seldom do you find an army of volunteers tirelessly seeking the new, yet to be discovered artists from around the region and bringing a curated collection to you. These selectors have done the work for you, so that you can be part of the artist’s journey. And who knows, even the Hoteres of this world had to start somewhere ... one of the new emerging talents here could be the next. Enjoy the selection and buying process and the fact that you have acquired an authentic piece of art, made by a talented person with a message in mind that has found its way into your life. This is an enriching experience you will treasure. You might enjoy it so much that this is the beginning of becoming an art collector. Clare Mora

AS COLLECTORS AND APPRECIATORS OF ART, YOU PLAY A VITAL ROLE. THE ART MARKET IS DRIVEN BY THE EXPRESSION OF PASSIONS, TASTE AND PHILOSOPHY.

Lisa Grennell – On a Thread

RICHARD THOMSON, DIRECTOR INTERNATIONAL ART CENTRE

THE CONTEMPORARY ART SCENE IN NEW ZEALAND New Zealand’s contemporary art scene is one of diversity and excellence. Over the last decade, a strong wave of young talent has asserted itself with some younger emerging artists having come to the fore. Now in 2017, a new generation is finding their voice. Many of these emerging and established artists are represented in the programme of this year’s MAGS Fine Art Show, and across galleries, graduate shows and group exhibitions locally and nationwide. At International Art Centre, we are privileged to work at the forefront of New Zealand’s art market. Within this market, there are two major strata. Firstly: works of historical significance depicting our nation’s whenua and tangata whenua which carry inherent value. The demand for works by artists such as Charles Goldie, Louis John Steele, Frances Hodgkins and Gottfried Lindauer

continues to rise steadily, and new records have been set in the last two years. While art market capital revolves in part around these important historical paintings, however, it is also driven forward by the less predictable but at times spectacular performance of modern and contemporary works. For this reason, auctions are an important mode of engaging with contemporary talent and gauging market trends. As collectors and appreciators of art, you play a vital role. The art market is driven by the expression of passions, taste and philosophy. Simply put, the best way to collect and invest in art is to follow your instincts and pursue that which you love.
