THE HEADMASTER

Dear Parents, Guardians, Students, Albertians & the Wider Mount Albert Grammar School Community, TThis year has been another successful year for the school. The senior prizegiving, the sports and arts dinners, the service and arts lions assemblies, junior prizegiving and Year 9 certificate of achievement ceremony all highlighted the outstanding success of both individuals and teams. Academically, our school is in great shape. We are producing results that are amongst the best and we continue to improve systems that track and monitor academic performance at all levels. The ability to generate lists is very straight forward. It’s the next step that requires the work and it’s here that there will always be room for improvement, but we can be pleased with where we are currently at and with the plans for 2013. Co-curricular activities at our school are called such because they sit alongside the academic programme as something we value as a part of the holistic education that the school offers. I am very pleased that we have staff who are so willing and able to dedicate many hours to this. There are too many schools where the co-curricular has been just an optional add-on and where staff don’t make a contribution. The expectation here is that they do and the results speak for themselves. As I said in my prizegiving speech, education is the silver bullet. Education is everything. It lifts people out of poverty and changes lives. At the heart of education are teachers. The competition for the best teachers should be fierce. They should be making six-figure salaries. Schools should be incredibly expensive for government and absolutely free of charge to us, the citizens, just like our armed forces. Teachers can, and do, make a real difference to the lives of individuals and to society as a whole. We have all had those inspirational teachers that have made a difference to us when at school - whether that was in the classroom or elsewhere. The New Zealand state education system is one of the best in the world. It’s not that its structure is particularly significant, or that we have any special programmes, it’s the quality of our teachers. Unfortunately, it’s fashionable at the moment to blame schools and teachers for the fact that not all students pass and that we have a very long tail. The suggested solutions seem to be make teachers work harder, create multiple targets and measure them regularly, design plans and write them up in expensive glossy booklets, set up think tanks, have countless meetings and have officials from all branches of the education sector focus almost exclusively on this one group and expect us to as well.

You cannot blame our educational system and teachers for not ALL students being successful when there are so many other factors that contribute. We take full responsibility for the role The Headmaster, Dale Burden we play in learning in school but I challenge policy-makers, politicians and others in positions of power to take responsibility for addressing the outside-of- school barriers to learning such as poverty, lack of access to formal early childhood education, violence in the family and other social problems, because until these are fixed, we won’t make progress. Next time someone makes a comment regarding the length of the “tail” in other countries in relation to New Zealand, ask them how these social issues are being addressed in those countries. Therein lies the answer, or at least a major part of it. We are lucky to have such great staff at MAGS. It’s the staff that set the tone, set the culture and set the expectations for the students. It’s the staff that put in the extra effort, go beyond a mere job description and aim every day to make a difference. In our school that means being well prepared and making learning happen in every lesson, taking on responsibilities beyond the classroom that support the school’s holistic education mission and playing an important role in the school-wide pastoral care network. I include all the non-teaching staff in this as well as they play a huge role in supporting teachers and the school administration to maintain the positive school culture that we have developed. One of the highlights of the year has been the award of the CP Liddell Staff excellence awards. Chris Liddell has kindly provided a sum of money to be awarded to up to four staff each year to recognize their excellent contribution and performance. Staff nominate their colleagues and a panel of three, including me, make the final decisions. This year’s recipients were Mrs Jacqui Cesan, Mrs Michelle Farmer, Mr Elliot Moka and Mrs Kathryn Molloy (Wainui). The School

Staff Farewells Reg Korau HOF Maori and Head of Te Puna has left us for a new position in Napier. We will miss him and wish him well. Gavin Milne has left to join Dilworth as Head of Faculty, Science Avinash Prakash is leaving us after serving one and a half years as LTR biology Lisa Hooker is leaving us after serving one and a half as LTR biology and has secured a job at another Auckland school Anna Holman in Biology has left Science to become a full time parent. Alison Wright in Science has left to be a full time parent. Jennifer Hobbs in English has resigned due to illness. We thank Jennifer for her work in term one and wish her well. Lynn Lacy-Hauck in English LTR, her contract with us has come to an end. We would like to thank Lynn for her hard work and wish her all the best as she takes the next step in her teaching journey. Ioana Schwalger has done an amazing job this year being our Photography teacher while Ms Curin was on maternity leave. Thanks to Jayshri Shingade for stepping in at ESOL at short notice. Thanks to Beverley Lawrence in ESOL We bid farewell to Jan Springett who is leaving MAGS after 24 years in various roles throughout the school. Jan started with us in 1989 on a part time basis as library assistant and then added a part time Careers assistant job before transferring from the library to a 20 hour per week job in Careers. About 10 years ago, Jan increased her hours to fulltime with an even split between Community Education and Careers. In 2002, she added accounts/administration assistant to her Community Education hours and moved out of the Careers department. Jan has been in that role ever since. She will be hugely missed by those of us who have worked with her in her many and varied roles over the past 24 years

Peer Support There were 110 applications from Year 12 student for 90 spaces in the Peer Support Leadership training. The two day training programme is organized and facilitated by the Guidance staff. The training is undertaken in January, before the remainder of the students return to classes. All the students were notified by mail in November.

Peer Mediation A number of Year 12 students attended weekly training during Term 3, with Marianne Wilson, Paul Ferner and some fully trained and badged Year 13 mediators. While we hope that they will not be needed, we do know that minor disagreements between friends can easily be resolved with the help of student mediators. Complicated cases are also undertaken, with the assistance of the guidance staff who are also trained in Restorative practice. Peer Mediation will be overseen by Marianne Wilson next year, with assistance from a senior leader. This year’s leader was Brianna Baker.

International Students An outstanding year! 2012 has been the best year the school has had with its international students since young people from other countries first came to our school to experience our MAGS Way. We have had international students in the school since the 1970s, as we are ideally placed in the city and have a boy’s boarding hostel to attract keen young people for a New Zealand education. 2012 has seen the biggest number of international students ever in the school with over 150 enrolling from more than 20 different countries, from Latin America, Asia, India, Asia-Pacific, Europe, Russia and Africa. Our international students cover a wide range of ages and all year levels in the school.

2012 Prefects This year we had three brilliant young people as Prefects, the largest number of international Prefects ever and we congratulate William Engle, Takafumi Sen and Jing Wen (Candy) Wang for their outstanding contributions in every way. They have been role models and supported our international students right through the year in a quite superb manner. All three have set the standard for international prefects in the future.

Senior Prize Giving A number of outstanding international students received awards at this year’s Senior Prize Giving, as follows: Takafumi Sen won the Evan Gray Cup for the Best AllRound International Boy. Takafumi has been at MAGS since April 2009 where he started in Year 10. He gained his NCEA Level 1 Certificate in 2010 and Level 2 Certificate in 2011. This year he is on track to gain his Level 3 Certificate. He has been an outstanding supporter of Japanese and other international students! In 2011 he was

appointed as an International student leader and did a fine job. This year he has been involved in a myriad of tasks: Co-chair of the International Student Committee; helping with tours of the school for visiting agents, groups and new students; supporting our new students, and student leader for our Japanese and many other students; peer support in the international English class; member of the Amnesty International Student Group; Premier basketball team member for 3 years; Junior basketball coach; organizing sports tournaments and Japanese sports teams; co-organiser of the food and culture evening. In February, Takafumi was appointed as a School Prefect and he has totally justified the confidence that the Headmaster showed in him. He has been an outstanding prefect and role model for our international students. Takafumi plans to return to Japan next year and possibly study at a Military University. Jing Wen (Candy) Wang won the Evan Gray Cup for the Best All-Round International Girl, for the second year. Jing Wen started MAGS in Year 11 in February 2010, quickly showing her academic potential. In 2010 she did extremely well in NCEA Level 1 and in 2011 did very well in NCEA Level 2. In 2012 Candy is on track for a NCEA Level 3 Certificate and University Entrance and has won a number of prizes and an Arts Lion for her Outstanding Achievements in Arts; Most Conscientious Dance Student and Excellence in Cultural Leadership; a Scholar Lion for Excellence in Graphics and a Service Lion for Service to the Wider School Community and Performing Arts. She is a top dancer, having begun at age 5 in China. Over the last 3 years she has been involved extensively in dance, inside and outside the school, both individually and in groups she has either joined or formed. Having been an International Student leader in 2011, Candy was appointed as a School Prefect this year and has been a wonderful supporter of our international students, particularly our Chinese students. Her quite outstanding involvement this year includes: Co-chair of the International Student Committee; Peer Tutor; Peer Support for our International English class; member of the Amnesty International group; Chinese cultural group leader; Arts Committee member; Auckland Dance Festival representative and Finalist in

‘MAGS Got Talent’. Jing Wen has been an outstanding prefect and role model for our international students. Year 13 Livestock Handling Camp

Understanding the commercial reality of handling and treating mobs of cattle and sheep is an integral part of the Year 13 Agricultural Science curriculum. This year the class worked at Limestone Downs Sheep and Beef Station to develop such skills. Students electronically weighed and recorded bull weights to determine drenching dosage rates. They then yarded and moved bulls, oral drenching each beast from the catwalk once secured in the race. At first students found themselves in a wrestling match with each 400kg bull, trying to get access to its head, open its mouth and shoot the drench into its throat. The bulls were crafty and often put their heads down out of reach, thus requiring much prodding and determination to dose each animal. As the hours and days progressed so did the students’ skills. Yes, some brawn was still required but so was technique and ability to ‘read’ the animals in order to move them efficiently, safely and with minimum stress.

Telford Agriculture Camp Ten Year 12 Agriculture students flew to the far south to experience farming in South Otago. Differences were immediately apparent: the weather was so, so, so, much colder, South Islanders have their own set of vocabulary e.g. they ‘tail’ lambs, not ‘dock’; and they talk with a different accent, rolling their rrrrrrs. The experiences were vast and memorable: lambing beats; arc and tig welding; tailing, ear notching, innoculating and castrating lambs; quad bike riding; butchering an entire hogget into cuts of ribs, chops and roasts; mothering up lambs; grafting apple trees; training a horse to move and change direction in a small circular corall using only voice and body movements. We have all developed new skills, which we could never have imagined learning. Horticulture Department Introducing the New Zealand Trade Academy in Horticulture 2013 For the very first time, the Horticulture Department at Mount Albert Grammar School will be starting up a Trade Academy for a group of Year 11 students. They will be offered a unique opportunity to experience, first hand, work in the Primary Industries - Agriculture, Horticulture and Forestry - over the course of the year. This opportunity has arisen in the school thanks to a joint venture with ourselves, the primary industry training organisation and employers. The students will earn valuable trade credits, alongside their academic credits, which all work towards the NCEA qualification. The course runs over a three year period and the students experience a variety of work sites / types which could enable them to pick up an apprenticeship at the end of it. Year 10 Market Day On 30 October the second semester Year 10 Business Studies students had their opportunity to show their enterprising business ideas, innovative products and creative promotional strategies. The standard of the products that the students produce continues to rise and this semester was no exception; with a number of the groups demonstrating that they have creative skills, making non-edible products.The event was held in the Albertian Quad at lunchtime and was well attended by both staff and students.

Classical Studies Tour – Greece and Italy During the September/October holidays, 33 students and 10 adults visited Greece and Italy. The Classical Studies Tour has become a regular feature of the Mount Albert Grammar School calendar and this tour, the fourth, was the largest with 33 students and ten adults. This tour focussed on sites that are important for studying Classical Studies, but also aimed at giving the students a wider appreciation of the classical world. Starting at Athens we visited the Acropolis and the new Acropolis Museum, as well as the National Archaeological Museum, then travelled to Delphi, Olympia, Mycenae and Corinth. An overnight ferry trip took us to Italy, where we spent two days in Naples and three in Rome. The students returned very tired but they had all had a very enjoyable experience. The next tour is planned for 2014. Students who are currently in Years 10 and 11 who may be interested in going on the next tour should see Mr Cave for information. On 25 October, our five ASB Bursary award winners were invited to a luncheon at the Logan Campbell Centre along with the Academic Dean, Mr Gibbs. These students were distinguished because they had made a considerable contribution to the life of the school and had also volunteered their time outside of school to the community.

Languages; German Trip

homestays they travelled on to Munich, taking in a day-trip to Neuschwanstein (the rainiest day they experienced), and spent a final day buying presents, visiting the Deutsches Museum (one of the world’s great museums of technology), viewing some of the imposing buildings and relaxing before the arduous flight home. This was the trip of a lifetime for many of the group and the buzz continued into Term Four. Many didn’t want to leave Germany so soon and also wanted to return sooner rather than later. Overall, the trip was a resounding success. Our special thanks go to Mrs Roberts whose calm presence, understanding and advice was appreciated by all.

On 29 September, a group of 27 students of German from Years 11 and 12 left New Zealand to undertake a two-week tour of Germany. This is the third such trip that Mr Gibbs has organized. They landed in Frankfurt on the Sunday and had the opportunity of visiting the city centre in the late afternoon, but the next day had to take a high-speed train to Berlin, where they spent several days. Highlights were the Dom (cathedral), the Pergamon Museum and its fantastic panorama exhibition, Alexanderplatz, the holocaust memorial, the Tiergarten district and the Reichstag. With special group tickets they navigated their way around the S-Bahn and U-Bahn systems and came to understand how a real first-world country operates its public transport. Then they had a free day to shop and see more sights. Quite a few students went to the famous Berlin Zoo while others accompanied Mr Gibbs to the Russian War Memorial in Treptow, the Funkturm and Exhibition Centre, the 1936 Olympic Stadium with Jack Lovelock’s name engraved in concrete and the Schloss Charlottenburg (a palace). The Ostbahnhof became their local haunt. From Berlin they again took an ICE train to Bonn before taking a short cruise up the Rhine past the castles and vineyards. In Heidelberg they viewed the castle and other sights before travelling to their homestays in Roding (east of Regensburg). This is a central Bavarian town where they were celebrated with a Bavarian evening hosted by the mayor, the principal of the local school and Herr Frank from the regional council. They attended school in the mornings (German schools tend not to go later than 1pm) and also visited a local zoo which specialised in the animals of the region and, made the front page of the newspaper as a result. In the first week of the holidays, a group of Senior French students from MAGS and Birkenhead College travelled to Tahiti for a 7 day immersion into the French language and Tahitian culture. They arrived to a tropical island where the temperature didn’t stray far from 30° and stayed for two nights at the Sofitel Beach resort for their first and last nights. The Racing in a Pirogue On y va! other five nights were spent in homestays, which was a much better idea to be able to use their French in real life situations. The first morning they munched their way through a wonderful buffet breakfast which combined the best of French food (pain au chocolats, fresh baguettes, croissants and omelettes made to order), with Tahiti tropical fruits: luscious mangoes, pineapples and pawpaws. Then they headed into downtown Papeete to meet their French teachers at the language school for their first day of four intensive French lessons. After school that first morning, there began the first of many awesome activities planned for their stay. They travelled on a bus to the closest white sand beach, and learned how to make a local specialty, “poisson cru-raw fish salad”. The next day they experienced Swimming with sting rays on Moorea another aspect of the Tahitian culture: racing in a Pirogue – which is a Tahitian traditional outrigger canoe. It was school against school, and they were stoked that MAGS won and are now keen to start up a MAGS Pirogue team. The best cultural activitiy was a day trip to Moorea,an Island off Tahiti, where they swam with, and fed reef sharks and sting rays. This was scary but easily one of the best things

they did in Tahiti. They later went snorkelling through coral at the little ‘motu’ where they stopped for a Tahitian-style lunch (poisson cru, chicken and barbecued fish) and an afternoon of sunbathing and swimming. The last two days were spent in their school and shopping. The big central Papeete market was just down from the school for everyone to purchase presents for people at home. What further strengthened their French was staying with a Tahitian home stay family who only spoke French. Meeting their home stays and making friendships seemed to be the highlight of everyone’s trip. It was really satisfying being able to communicate with other people in a foreign language but at times the language barrier could also be quite hilarious. Not only did we become friends with our homestays but we also made new friendships with other MAGS students and the students from Birkenhead College. Travelling with a group of kids your own age is a lot of fun and an amazing opportunity that everyone should take advantage of. In a couple of years there is a possibility of a trip to France. We loved this Tahiti trip so much that we have already put our names down for another. By taking a language, students can experience other cultures and also experience the rewards of knowing a second language. It‘s really worth it.

Chinese Essay Competition 2012 The Chinese Essay Competition is proudly sponsored by the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China, and organised by the Confucius Institute in Auckland, in association with the NZ Chinese Writers Association and ILEP. The essay competition is open to students at New Zealand secondary schools and tertiary institutions who are nonnative speakers of Chinese language. It is seen as an incentivised opportunity for learners to extend language skills from oral into written expression. This year, four students from Mount Albert Grammar School joined the Competition, and they won prizes. The students are Alexander Boyle (10DRW); Jeon Woo Kim (11HBS); Adil Imran (10DRW) and David Tuipulotu (13NRG). Congratulations on their achievements.

Japanese The Year 9 Japanese class was fortunate to have a Japanese assistant this term, and the students have experienced Origami (Japanese paper folding art). The students enjoyed this fantastic opportunity to learn Origami, as well as speaking to the assistant in Japanese putting their brilliant new language skills to use straight away. We intend to have more Japanese assistants next year, in order for students to make the most of this learning opportunity, and to expand their horizons through learning the language and culture.

On Monday, the 29th of October, Ms Liu’s Chinese classes were in E19 cooking up a delicious dish; Dumplings. It was an extremely fun, end of year experience, and the art of making dumplings seemed Making dumplings in the Food Tech room to be more enjoyable than expected. With the mixture already made, all they had to do was scoop a spoonful of goodness and dollop it on to a circular-shaped pastry, then wrap it into the desired pattern. The tables were organised very well, with vegetarians being on the left hand side and the carnivores on the right. The feast included many dishes that were unique to Asia, such as Korean Kimchi, sweet sesame, vegetable and meatfilled dumplings, as well as roasted duck and chicken. The day was enjoyed by the whole of Ms Liu’s Chinese classes (Yrs 10,12 & 13). Vanity versus Apetite ; a fairytale Eerie silence filled the valley as thick mist poured in over the high ridges. Jagged cliff faces hung from the valley walls, grey, cold and treacherous. The sky burst into flames as the sun began to sink below the horizon, casting long shadows across the dew coated grass. Clouds of steam rolled out of the dragon’s nostrils. The tendrils of the fiery evening sky reached out and danced on his yellow-green scaly hide. Black eyes surveyed the valley for any sign of movement, any sign of a possible victim. A brave stag stalked out from the safety of the woods and ventured onto the plains. Greedily hoeing into the sugary spring grass, the stag abandoned its cautionary instincts. The dragon swooped down and killed the stag with a single bite to the neck. Warm blood splattered onto his fearsome face. It dripped onto the ground, staining the grass red. ‘Let that be a lesson to all beasts smaller than I’, thought the dragon, as he devoured his kill. Legs muscles bunching, the dragon leapt into the air in a single lithe movement, spreading its wings wide. The mighty beast soared over the misty valley as hearty laughter rumbled in its fire filled belly. All the creatures of the valley shrank down into their hiding places as his dark shadow passed over the land. As the shadows grew longer, the dragon seemed to grow stronger. The sun lay down to rest and a solemn moon began to rise. Darkness cloaked the valley. The dragon flapped its massive wings and flew away. This valley had been his hunting grounds for many years, but the dragon had become bored with mere animals for meals. Tales of more exciting kills echoed within the dragon’s bloodthirsty mind as he raced westward. He flew all night, and when the sun finally rose its morning light raced about the dragon’s scales with vigour. The dragon landed in the clearing of a thick forest and began searching for a delicious meal. A shining light was like a beacon to the dragon. He knew that some humans made shiny things. The dragon was curious. He wanted to know what this flashing light was, … and if there was a tasty meal to be had. The dawn light strengthened as the mists cleared. A new day began. Exotic birds sang and little creatures scuttled around on the forest floor. The dragon stuck its large snout between the trees, trying to investigate the shining object. “Admiring my mirror are you, mighty dragon?” asked the dwarf. “What, pray tell me is a mirror?” questioned the dragon, tilting his great head to the side. “It is a beautiful object, that you can see your reflection in,” said the dwarf. “May I see it?” asked the dragon. “Very well, but be careful with it. Do not breathe on it or scratch it!” exclaimed the bossy dwarf as the dragon stretched out his scaled paws. The little man held out his mirror for the dragon to see. “Oh!” cried the dragon, as he saw himself in the mirror. “It is most strange to see oneself so clearly!” “Would you like one, my dear dragon?” asked the dwarf shrewdly. “Oh, yes!” said the dragon, “It would be delightful to own such a thing!” So, the clever dwarf gave the dragon a mirror of his very own. Visual Arts Eden Arts Awards In the Term 3 holidays ten Art students from Mount Albert Grammar entered the Eden Arts Young Artist Awards for 2012. Olivia Isbey was one of the talented Olivia Isbey (far left), Dick Frizzell (3rd from right) Year 13 Photography students who submitted her work titled “Never give up, Never fail”. It was the first year that Mount Albert Grammar School had entered and the competition was tough, with a high standard of work submitted from a number of schools. Artist, Dick Frizzell, judged the competition and Olivia won, not only the Best Photographic work, but was also the Overall Winner, and she received a total of $6000 in prize money. Her work was also sold and Olivia kindly donated the proceedings to CanTeen. Olivia embodies the ethos of Mount Albert Grammar School in her striving for Excellence and in her commitment to the community and worthy causes.

Bringing Storybooks to Life A team of top year 10 Visual Arts students under the expert tutelage of painting teacher, Ms Ainslie Jones, have worked hard over the last term, dedicating their lunchtimes and after school time to completing a storybook themed mural for the local Talented Tots Early Learning and Child Care. Three girls went to the Centre and helped children put the finishing touches to the work by adding rainbow coloured handprints

Responding to a request from Kings Garden Centre Cafe, a group of diligent year 11 painting students worked on a mural assemblage as part of their final internal assessment. Students submitted plans to the cafe owner Yvonne Lennon, who then chose designs by Ashlee Ridgway-Keehn and Brittany HaylockSkinner, which celebrate the environment, gardening and the many delicious treats available everyday at Kings CafĂŠ. They are pictured here having helped with the final installation.

Snapshots of a School day Year 11 painting students produced these acrylic on canvas paintings for their final internal paintng assessment. The paintings were based on snapshots of school life that the students selected and photographed. Intended to become part of an installation in the new E block stair well, they are currently on display in the new Youth Art Gallery in the Mount Albert YMCA Community Centre on New North Road. Kev Carter the OSCAR & Youth Programmes Manager is pleased to have student work on show in the community and is very happy with the positive public response.

Service Lions Congratulations to the recipients of the inaugural service lions which were awarded to students by guest speaker Colin Prentice at a special assembly on Friday 26 October. Mr Prentice has held Erikana Pedersen receiving her Service a number of senior Lion from Mr Colin Prentice leadership roles in education and aid work including being Principal of Macleans College and Mount Roskill Grammar School, Chief Executive Officer of World Vision, New Zealandâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s largest international aid agency, and Director of the Schools Partnership Office at the University of Auckland. He has had extensive teaching and mentoring experience in education, sport, church life and business. Both Mr Prentice and Headmaster Burden stressed how important it is to serve others. Of all the awards available to students in the school, Mr Burden believes this one is the most important because it recognizes those who choose to give to their school community.

Sports Dinner The Mount Albert Grammar School Sports Dinner was held in the Tasman Room of the Alexandra Park on Thursday 18th October. It was a very enjoyable evening, celebrating our top sporting athletes, with guest speaker Richard De Groen, an old boy who is the Commonwealth Games Federation’s Team Development Manager. Our students were awarded 42 Black Caps for representing New Zealand in their chosen sport. These were awarded by Bryan Williams, an old boy of Mount Albert Grammar School, and ex All Black legend. Bryan has recently retired as our Director of Rugby Academy and was awarded a framed All Blacks/MAGS Rugby Shirt. He does insist that he’s not retiring from MAGS though! Greg Moyle representing the Albertians, and Chairman of the Board of Trustees, presented 123 Blue Caps to teams and individuals that had won an Auckland title in a Premier Grade Division. Thank you to Chris Metcalfe, who once again did an amazing job of being the MC for the evening.

Arts Dinner The Annual Arts Awards Dinner was held on Tuesday 23rd October at The Sorrento In The Park in Cornwall Park . The dinner celebrates the achievements of our Visual and Performing Arts, Cultural and Music students and is always a popular event on the school calendar. Ably hosted by Arts prefects Jennece Morris, Nathan Kara and William Engle, this year was no exception. In 2012 we welcomed Media Studies Department to the event. Media Studies students have to create music videos and documentaries as part of their curriculum which requires a creative process the same as devising in Drama or Dance choreography. There is also an increasing number of Visual and performing Arts students also choosing Media Studies as a subject. Following the opening address by Mr Burden where he acknowledged both the achievements of the students and the hard work and commitment from the faculty, the hosts introduced the first performance of the night which was an excellent music video created by a year 11 student Shekynah Clarke and then Media Studies HOD Ms Beck presented the new Media studies awards. All HODS presented their department awards and the evening was interspersed with stellar performances from

each department . Year 13 student Charlotte –Rose Agbeli -Werry played the part of June Carter (wife of Johnny Cash) in a devised monologue that included a song. This was a polished and moving performance. The next chosen performance was by year 10 student Lisa Mclaughlan who choreographed her dance to an original composition by year 12 music students and captivated the audience with her skill and control. The final performance for the evening was by the Lisa Mclaughlan award winning Barbershop Quartet who sang Love Me by Elvis Presley and as always had the audience cheering. As well as the new Media awards, four new Cultural Awards were presented for the first time. For Maori PFA there were two new awards, Taonga for the Kapa Haka Leaders for 2012; Zhane Symons and Sjian Colbert. Three other new Cultural awards, (1) Excellence in Cultural Choreography and Performance ,won by Candy Wang and Excellence in Cultural Leadership (Pasifika). Trophies donated by Albertians and culture group mentors Alexandra Su’a and Fred Kome were won by Tongan Group leader Jahkeisha Annandale and Niuean group leader Solomone Falaniko. The final awards, Dux Artium girls and boys were read by senior Arts Manager, Te Aroha Keenan, with the winners being-: Girls; Year 12 student of Media, Visual Arts and Dance, Brosnan Ackerman and Boys ; Year 13 student of Music, Dance and Maori performing Arts Mosa’ati Mafileo. By the sound of the applause following the announcements these were very popular choices.

Leaversâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; Dinner The annual leaversâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; dinner took place on Monday 5 November at Alexandra Park. There were over 400 students, parents,teachers and Albertians attending. Students were presented with graduation certificates by Ben Stallworthy,the President of the Albertians and everyone was kept entertained by the MC Chris Metcalfe. This year the guest speakers were Dr Mary-Grace Aballe and Dr William Good who were the head prefects of 2005. They spoke about the importance of their time at school in preparing them for their medical studies and encouraged all the graduating students to make the most of their opportunities. The evening was concluded by Mr Cave who gave his final speech as Year 13 Dean.

Sports Round up Girls’ Basketball – Nationals,Nelson Girl’s basketball is on the rise after the team finished above their pre-tournament rankings at the recent NZSS Basketball Championships held in Nelson during the first week of the school holidays. The MAGS team finished pool play with convincing wins against Marlborough Girls College (70-43) and Buller High School (74-47). However, in the top-of-thepool final game against Hamilton Girls High School the MAGS team suffered their first defeat losing 55-87 to finish second in Pool B and gain a place in the quarter-finals against arch-rivals Fraser High School (Hamilton). MAGS were up to the challenge and won comfortably 69-47 and, in doing so, created history for the school in girls’ basketball by reaching the semi-finals. A local derby against Auckland Girls’ Grammar School in the semi-final saw Keziah Lewis lead the way for the MAGS team, scoring 26 points to take them into the final for the first time winning the encounter 52-43. The MAGS girls met Hamilton Girls’ High School in the final who were the only team to have beaten them so far in the tournament. The Hamilton team had crushed the dreams of an all-Auckland final when they won their nail-biter semi-final against the Greater Auckland Secondary School Champions Rangitoto College 73-71. The final was fiercely contested right from tip-off, with MAGS putting Hamilton GHS under pressure and they had a slight advantage going into halftime, up 32-30. However after the break the Hamilton team took control scoring 16 unanswered points and ended up going on to win the final in convincing style, 74-56. The good shooting statistics from Keziah Lewis (18), Idaho-Maree Purcell (15) and Kerryn Poto (9) just was not enough to keep the MAGS team in the game. The Mount Albert Grammar School team have lifted their ranking at the National tournament from 13th in 2010 to 2nd this year, which is an outstanding achievement. Thanks to the coaching of Julie Kelman-Poto, Hori Poto and team manager Sam Dockery, together with the commitment and dedication by the girls in the team. Keziah Lewis was named in the tournament team, which was just reward for her excellent play throughout the week.

Cheerleaders

Mount Albert Grammar School entered their very first Cheerleading Competition on Sunday 29th October at the North Shore Events Centre. The team performed well in the School Level 1-2 Co-ed section against Cambridge High School, Massey High School, Glenfield College, Waitakere College and Te Awamutu College and they came 5th. The team have been practicing really hard and enjoyed competing. They’re now looking forward to working even harder on perfecting their routine and competing again for MAGS. Thank you to Erin Douglas for coaching them.

Distance Running Matthew Battley ran the Auckland Half Marathon in 1:15:11 and he was placed 8th. This is a fantastic result as the average time was 2:20:55.Look out for Mathew as he competes at the Dunedin Nationals in December.

Mount Albert Grammar School secured two silvers in the Secondary Schools’ Nationals event held in August. Penny Bennett competed in the International Elite grade and came 2nd with Ruth Lever coming 2nd in the Club A Rhythmic Gymnastics section. Both these girls went on to represent Auckland, traveling to Dunedin in October to compete in the Gymsport Nationals. Penny came 2nd in Senior Women’s Penny Bennett (front) competing Trampolining and Ruth in Synchronised Trampolining at came 1st in both the Level the NZ Indo Pacific Trampoline 9 and Senior International Championships in Sydney Rhythmic Group. Also, representing Auckland were Kate Nicholson in Junior International and Hannah Dabb in Double Mini Trampoline events. Penny went on to represent NZ at the Indo Pacific Championships 2012 in Sydney, where she won a bronze medal in the Individual event and was part of the New Zealand senior Women’s Team that won. Kate Nicholson also competed in Sydney and secured a PB in her individual event and came 4th in the synchronised Trampolining event. There were teams competing from Australia, Japan, Canada, Thailand & New Zealand.

In the holidays, Leah Mettam (Year 9) participated in the NZ National Ice Skating Championships, where she placed 3rd in the Intermediate Ladies Section. Leah has also been selected for the AFF National Women’s League team.

Ice Hockey This year, Matthew Taylor (Year 10) was selected in the Auckland Junior Elite Ice Hockey Team, as well as the New Zealand U16 Development team, who participated against Australia in a week long tournament. Matt’s ambition for 2013 is to make the travelling NZ U16 team to Australia.

Martial Arts Congratulations to Keneti Ah Kuoi-Atmore for his numerous wins earlier in the year at the Robert Gemmell Martial Arts Auckland Championships. Keneti competed in various Martial Arts, including Shaolin Kempo, Hsingi and Bagua, also winning titles in traditional Chinese Weaponry, self-defence, forms and fighting in the various styles. The Championship culminated with Keneti receiving the U20 Fighting Champion and U20 Best Overall Titles. This is the 3rd year of winning these titles for Keneti.

Rowing October 27, 2012: A win in a prestigious eight event, and a clutch of seconds in the first regatta of the 2012-2013 season, has seen the Mount Albert Grammar School Rowing Squad off to a flying start. The Waitemata/TGS Regatta at Lake Pupuke on Saturday, October 27, was attended by around 1000 athletes, up from about 700 last year, reflecting a spike in enthusiasm for rowing off the back of New Zealand’s gold medals at this year’s Olympics. The MAGS squad now has 42 members, up from 27 last year, covering all levels, from novice to under-18 rowers, and including girls. The Boys under-16 eight won their event in assertive style, surging from 3rd place to cross the line ahead of 6 other schools. It was their first race in the squad’s new eight boat. The winning crew was: Carl Pracey, Matthew Smith, Evander Tangiiti, Jarvis Palmer, Adam Callander, Jed Bradley, Tyler Tuiala, Jonathan Winter and coxswain Dylan Dodds. MAGS also gained seven 2nd placings and two 3rd placings. One of the 2nd placings was the boys under-15 eight, indicating we have another fine crop of novices to continue our success. Next up is the Bennett Shield at Lake Pupuke on Saturday

November 24. Term 3, saw many rowers continue training around winter sport commitments, giving them a good foundation of fitness when the rowing season started in September. Novices were recruited from both the Junior and Senior school, giving Head Coach Will Maling, and teacher in charge of rowing Ben Grace, more options when designing crews. Our new boats and oars arrived, bringing Magsrow’s plant inventory to one eight boat, two four/quads, one pair/double and two singles. We also now own 16 of our own oars. All these purchases have been achieved thanks to fundraising by Magsrow families.

This made the score 10–15 to Onehunga with just two minutes left on the clock. MAGS scored again with a well-constructed team try under the post and the conversion was successful to make the final score 17–15. Next were Tangaroa in the quarter final and we were keen to put in a good team performance. Aaron McLalland had an excellent all round game and scored two long-range tries. Irae Simone was also very dominant during this game, and made some excellent line-breaks. MAGS finally put an excellent team effort together and ran away with the game to win 40 – 0. In the semi final, we played Botany Downs College to qualify for the top 4. We were keen to put in another good performance and carry on with their momentum gained from their quarter final win. We scored two back-to-back tries early and Botany never recovered. Brody Lam scored an excellent long-range try from the kick-off in the second half to put the result out of reach of Botany. The final score was 42–0 to MAGS. In the final MAGS played Auckland Grammar School. We were excellent in defence, and were desperate to defend their own line. MAGS needed more possession in second half if they were to have any chance of winning. Aaron McLelland out-sprinted the opposition, to score an excellent length of the field try to get us back into the match. Shortly after, Dylan Lam barged over the line to make the score 12 – 10 to MAGS. MAGS desperately defended their line again in the last minute of play. MAGS won the final 19–10 and were thrilled with the victory. Congratulations to coach Rocky Khan and the boys for winning back-to-back Auckland 7s titles.

Rugby 7s The Mount Albert Grammar School Boy’s 7s Team were looking forward to the challenge of defending their title in the Auckland 7s competition. In pool play MAGS played Mt Roskill Grammar School and this was a very tough physical game. Mt Roskill really took it to MAGS and were the first to score. In the second half MAGS finally kicked into gear and scored some good team tries. The final score was 24–14 to MAGS and the team were happy to get their first win of the competition. In their second pool match MAGS played Howick College, in what turned out to be a one- sided game. MAGS were too quick and powerful for their opposition. George Edwards, Ethan Thompson and Brody Lam made some great breaks for MAGS during this match. Final score was 44–0 to MAGS. In the final match of pool play, MAGS played a very skillful and powerful Onehunga side. Onehunga scored early to hit the lead, and then scored again just before half time to lead 0-10. Rugby Girls The Mount Albert Grammar School Girls’ team made history by being the first Girls’ Rugby Team to ever play in a competition for the school. They had fantastic first up win, versus Onehunga 12-10. MAGS played Tamaki College in

their second game and this was a tough and physical game. Unfortunately, Tamaki scored a try on full time to win 15-14.In their last pool game, we won 12–0 over Edgewater College. The goal was to make the semi-finals, and this was achieved. In the semi-final, we played Auckland Girls’ Grammar School. This was going to be a tough game but one our girls were looking forward to. MAGS attacked for the whole first half but could not score. AGS defended their line well, and on half time broke out to score a try. The girls were disappointed at half time because they had not turned the pressure they were putting on AGS into points. AGS scored two more tries to win the game 0-15. The injury toll was mounting for MAGS, but the girls had to get up for the 3rd/4th play-off versus Tamaki College. Tamaki scored early, but MAGS replied with an excellent team try on half time. In the second half both teams were out on their feet but they never gave up. Tamaki scored two late tries to win the game 7-17. Star players for MAGS were Te Ao Frandi, Aotea Frandi and Frances Bloomfield. Ramsey Tomokino did an excellent job as Coach, with most of the girls playing rugby for the first time. This experience will make the team stronger next season.

Swimming Over the October holidays, Morgan Wadley (Year 10) competed at the New Zealand National Short Course Swimming Championships. Her results in the 14 year old female age group were: 3rd 50m butterfly, 7th 50m breaststroke, 6th 100m butterfly, 10th 100m breaststroke and 11th 100m medley. Tyler Jerrom (Year 10), also attended the New Zealand National Short Course Swimming Championships in Wellington. He qualified in 6 events, achieved 6 PB’s, made two U15 finals and he won a Bronze in the 14 year old male age group 50m Butterfly.

Tag Football The following students have been selected to represent New Zealand in the up and coming Tag World Cup in December. There are 16 nations competing at the tournament and the students are guaranteed to experience some excellent competition. U16 representatives: Leah Mettam (Yr 9), Shannon Filimoehala (Yr 9), Jessica Nicholson (Yr 11) and Zoe Moriarty (Yr 11). U18 representatives: Jamie-Lee Price (Yr 12), Rangi Moeua (Yr 10), James Quincey (Yr 12), Michael James (Yr 12) and Maytricx Kauhiva (Yr 12). U20 representatives: Samuel Lulia (Yr 12).

Girls’ Rugby Team

Softball MAGS has a Boys’ and a Girls’ team entered into the Junior Competition, which is played at May Road in Sandringham. Stuart Kinghorn, the Senior Coach, has been Junior Softball working with the boys, and new staff member Samantha Farmiloe has been doing a great job managing the girls. Both teams went on to win their respective grades.

Rawhiti Williams (Year 10) was selected by Tennis New Zealand to play in the U14 Boys Top 8 Junior Masters Tennis Tournament over Labour Weekend. Rawhiti entered the competition as the number one seed, he went through the entire tournament without dropping a set, and the significance of this achievement is that only the top 8 players in the country are selected to play in this tournament for each age group and gender. From this, Rawhiti secured himself a spot in the team to compete against Australia in their National tournaments Rawhiti Williams in action in December. He not only won the title, but he was awarded $1000 worth of travel vouchers to other tournaments.

SPORT

Touch Junior Touch is well under way, with MAGS having three teams competing each Tuesday at Grey Lynn Park. The Junior A Boys and Girls Teams both look very strong in their grades after some impressive high scoring wins. The Boys A2 Team, are in a hard pool but have also been very competitive.

Volleyball This term we entered two Boys’ and two Girls’ Teams into the Junior Volleyball Competition. The boys have been coached by Mr James Bellingham with management help from Mr Bryn Corkery. Both are teachers at MAGS. This year the girls were fortunate enough to have the services of Mr Redver Viliamu to coach them. He has 25 year’s playing and coaching experience and is currently coaching the Waitakere-Auckland Men’s Club team. Though the junior season is a short one the players had an enjoyable season.

Water Polo Girls The Junior Girls have trained hard all winter in preparation for the Term 4 competition, even braving the outdoor pool at St Mary’s, now that’s commitment! The girls are looking forward to competing in the NISS tournament from 29 November to 2 December. They are a young team who are showing lots of potential for the future. Thank you to Miranda Chase for coaching the girls all year, we will miss her involvement. Miranda Chase (Year 13) has been selected in the NZ Youth Girl’s Water Polo team to travel to Perth, Australia in December to participate in the World Championships. 2012 NZSS Netball Championships, Timaru From start to finish, the 13 players that travelled to Timaru were focused on the job ahead of them. MAGS started the week with impressive results and continued this through to the final. Our theme for our successful UNISS campaign was “Together we are One”. Going into NZSS we wanted to look at the product we wanted to put out on court, and ensure we developed other tactics and skills we could use. Our girls brainstormed and came up with a formula based on the song “Girls on Fire”= Drive + Skills + Heart”- a great fit for this team. This song rocked out on the drive before every game. Captain Erikana Pedersen led her team on and off court, supported by stellar performances from all the players. CoCoach Paula Smith said “It is hard to single out one individual as it was a total team effort with all girls doing their jobs with accuracy and full commitment. This group of players are very special and it’s a joy to see their hard work rewarded with such an emphatic display of netball”. MAGS vs Westlake Girls 46-20, MAGS vs Marlborough Girls’ 65-14, MAGS vs St Mary’s Girls’ 47-23 , MAGS vs Craighead 51-25, MAGS vs Avondale 39-21, MAGS vs Baradene 39-26 and the Final, MAGS vs Tu Toa. 43-24. A complete domination of Secondary School Netball saw Mount Albert Grammar win the Grand Final against Tu Toa. This was the last verse of a poem written by Erikana Pedersen, Shekynah Clarke and Alanis Toia, and this sums up the “MAGS Pride” they took out on court for this game. “These will be our last 40 minutes left So give it your best and never rest Those blue and yellow colours will be soaring The last words I leave you with... “THROUGH HARDSHIP TO GLORY” “The game does not build character, it reveals it. This team have been masters of their own destiny, the product they put out there was second to none.” said co-coach, TeAroha Keenan.

President’s report; Ben Stallworthy The 90th Jubilee was very successful providing an opportunity for hundreds of Albertians and their families to reconnect with the School. The atmosphere was relaxed and convivial and was an opportunity for many people that had not been near the School since leaving to rekindle a sense of camaraderie and pride in being part of the Mount Albert Grammar family. In my opinion the most important benefits of the 90th Jubilee were related to the activities that were initiated by the Albertians Association to promote the event. We set out to engage with current pupils and the School and to try and enrol these groups into the event. The following projects highlight how we tried to achieve this goal;

The Albertians Association sponsored the Year 12 Business Class’s entrepreneurship programme by funding them to design and sell 90th Jubilee merchandise. We funded the projects and organized Albertians to mentor and assist the class; We organized prominent Albertians to speak at school assemblies about their experiences; A committee of current students assisted with planning and running the activities.

This year has been a particularly busy year for the Albertians Association. Last year we stated that the activities of the Albertians Association are focused on two key objectives: Promoting the School in the wider community; and Developing camaraderie amongst the wider community of past students. In 2012 we celebrated the 90th anniversary of Mount Albert Grammar with a jubilee weekend, which provided a wonderful opportunity to promote our two objectives. The 90th Jubilee consisted of a range of activities spread over two days: A relaxed Friday night mix and mingle in the School Hall targeted at the younger Albertians. This event was attended by approximately 180 past students and teachers; Saturday was devoted to sports with current first teams playing against St Kentigern College. Hundreds of people from our school’s wider community watched our sports teams in action; School tours were organized for returning past students so that they could see how the School has developed since they were last there; A formal lunch in the School Hall was attended by approximately 160 past students providing a social opportunity suited to older Albertians; and Saturday’s activities culminated in a relaxed after match function in the School Hall.

We are very proud of these projects because, through them, we are starting to develop a stronger link between the Albertians Association and the School. Within the Albertians we have a wide range of people with skill, experience and knowledge that can support current students. Activities like these projects bring current and past pupils together enhancing the sense of belonging, camaraderie and heritage that is such an important part of esprit-de-corps. Other benefits of the 90th Jubilee were increasing our

database of Albertians, bringing new people into the Albertians Association and providing a rehearsal for future large events like the 100th Jubilee. Although the 90th Jubliee was our biggest event of the year the Albertians Association continued to work hard promoting the School in the following ways: By publically acknowledging the success and service of Dale Griffiths in being made Chair of the Pharmaceutical College by voting him Albertian of the Year; Another two Albertians were admitted to the Hall of Distinction during 2012: Greg Moyle for his service to both the School and our wider community and Professor Michael Walker for his contributions to biological science; Social networking and information sharing via the internet has been encouraged as a way to keep past students up-to-date with current activities and successes and we now have active LinkedIn and Facebook social networks: By supporting regular events like the Old, Old Boys Lunch and ANZAC Day services. In summary, this year was defined by our commitment to the 90th Jubilee, a successful event that has opened up new opportunities for the way the Albertians Association can work with the School. Next year we will build on our success by looking at the following activities: Continuing to grow our pool of ‘active’ Albertians using social networks to keep them in touch with the Association and the School; Developing the relationship that we started with current pupils during the 90th Jubilee by sponsoring business projects and coming into the School to talk to current students; Trialing new social activities that are smaller and more frequent and keep Albertians in touch with each other; Promoting the success of current students and Albertians both within our community and externally. If you have ideas about how we can better achieve our aims please get in touch with us. ALBERTIAN OF THE YEAR 2012 Dale Griffiths DipPharm, PGDipPharmPrac, PGCertClinPharm, RegPharmNZ, FPS, MNZCP At Mount Albert Grammar School 1969 – 1973 Dale Griffiths started school in a two language class and progressed through the school, with considerable success. As Headmaster Maurice Hall said in his testimonial, “He is thus a boy of above average ability.” He played soccer in his early years, represented the School in yachting and rugby league and he looked after the lighting and sound for many functions. The Headmaster again: “ He is a quiet well- mannered and capable young man and has shown himself independent and reliable.” Dale was registered as a pharmacist in 1980. He spent some time working in Thames Hospital and as a locum in community practice before becoming a pharmacy manager. He bought his own pharmacy in 1994, which is now in a large practice with 10 General Practitioners along with other allied professionals. Dale has undertaken significant postgraduate education and has a special interest in diabetes. He has had wide involvement in pharmacy organisations, joining the Executive of the Auckland Branch of the Pharmaceutical Society of New Zealand in 1999 when he was appointed as an Intern Mentor. He was later the Branch President. Dale’s most rewarding contribution is in assisting over 20 young graduates to full registration as pharmacists. Many other roles followed. Since 2005 he has been on the National Executive of the Pharmaceutical Society of New Zealand, Treasurer for three years and Vice-President since 2010, the same year that he became Chairman of the New Zealand College of Pharmacists. Later in 2010, Dale’s work for the profession was recognised with the award of a Fellowship of the Pharmaceutical Society of New Zealand. Dale has held two governance roles at the School of Pharmacy, The University of Auckland. He has been the Community Pharmacy representative where he helped to develop the externship requirements for the undergraduate course and is currently Pharmaceutical Society of New Zealand representative on the Board of Studies, which evaluates the performance of the School itself. He has been involved with multidisciplinary panels developing a national electronic prescribing system for primary care.

CORRIDORS Dale’s contribution to the School has been immense. He has been a member of the Albertians Association Executive since 1999 and was President for three years. He was a Trustee of the Mount Albert Grammar School Foundation from its Dale accepting the award from Ben Stallworthy inception in 2009 until last year, and he has been a parent representative on the School’s Board of Trustees since 2006. Herb Towers Staff Award This award is funded by the Mount Albert Grammar School Foundation, and is a grant presented to a member of MAGS staff for outstanding service to the school. The Herb Towers staff award was first presented in 1990. Congratulations to Jess Lythe who was the 2012 recipient.

Michael Koenen (2005-2009) Michael has been invited to join the Tennessee Epsilon Chapter of Alpha Chi, a nationally recognised honor society for upper-classmen and graduate students that counts among its members the very best students in America. Membership is extended only to students who have earned the requisite academic credit and class standing while attending Lincoln Memorial University. This is an outstanding achievement as fewer than 10% of your class will be invited to become members of this august organization. Congratulations to five Albertians who have recently made National Sporting Honours. They are Portia Woodman (2005-2009) (Women’s Rugby Sevens) Liam Robertson (2007-2011) (Underwater Hockey) Gareth Williams-Spiers (2004-2008) (Rugby Sevens) Iopu Iopu (2004-2008) (Rugby Sevens) and Daniel Lamb-Hunt (2001-2005) Baseball.

Visitors to the Development Office Ishmael Tilialo (2000-2004) Ishmael visited school on 24 September 2012 with his wife while on a two week holiday. Ishmael is currently studying at Brigham Young University and is into his third year doing a BSc in Marketing and Management. He is also playing rugby for a college team. Cameron Hughan (1983-1987) Cameron visited school on 24 September 2012. Cameron is living in Sydney and has been for the last 22 years. He was a prefect in his last year of school. Donovan Burton (1986-1989) Is living in Brisbane, Australia and was in visiting the school on 9 November 2012. Donovan studied at Griffith University and gained a Bachelor of Environmental Planning with 1st Class Honours in climate change and he is a PhD. Candidate. Donovan is a Scientist, his role being a climate adaptation specialist. René Burton (1991-1993) René visited school on 9 November 2012. He is an experimental Film maker and photographer and is currently doing a Post Graduate Masters degree at AUT. Donovan Burton, René Burton

Boris Haden (1941-1946) Passed away on 13 September 2012. Boris was a house boy while he was at Mount Albert Grammar School. Abdul Ali – Thomas Roy Felton (1959-1963) Passed away on 21 September 2012 aged 66. Roy was a diligent pupil, with particular strengths in Maths and Chemistry. In 1964 he achieved Dux, won a National Scholarship, a John Williamson Scholarship and an ASB Bursary. He was also President of the Debating and Astronomy Clubs, and Secretary of the Christian Crusaders Club. Headmaster, Mr Nairn, in Roy’s Testimonial, described him as “a quiet well-mannered boy with a likeable nature. He is thoroughly reliable and a most conscientious and persistent worker”. Roy then went on to Auckland University, gaining an M.Sc in Maths, before going to Secondary Teachers’ College. In later years he returned to Auckland University for a Dip Stats, attended Bible College NZ for a BD, and also nearly completed a D Theol from Melbourne College of Divinity looking at stylometry in John’s Gospel. Roy made his career teaching maths, mostly specialising in Statistics, at Henderson High School, AuckIand Institute of Technology (AUT), The University of Auckland, Avondale College, back to AUT and Manukau Institute of Technology from where he retired in 2010. He changed his name by deed poll to an all-nations name of Abdul Rahim Wula ZhongShu Kauri Satya AhHun Ali, and every week attended Muslim, Christian and Hindu worship, fitting in all the other religions and sects as time allowed - hoping to influence them all to join his new religion, which he felt would unite all peoples. He also developed a great affinity with the Maori people. Roy’s mind was ever-active. He travelled extensively overseas and in New Zealand, leaving 20 filing drawers of notes with instructions on how to fix an extremely diverse range of world problems. Eighteen months ago Roy was diagnosed with terminal Prostate cancer. At his funeral his colleagues from Manukau Institute of Technology spoke very highly of his helpful attitude to staff and students. A very intelligent, interesting man, with a good heart. Dr Ross Burton (1934-1939) Passed away on 30 September 2012 aged 90. In his final two years at school he was a member of the First XI Soccer team. In 1939 he finished 2nd in the 100yards and 880yards, was a member of the Senior French Club and he was a Prefect. He was joint School Dux. Dr Ross Burton was a prominent doctor and highly regarded within his profession. He was Head of Radiotherapy at Auckland Hospital and worked closely with the controversial Milan Brych with their trials leading to chemotherapy treatment and other treatments for cancer patients. Ian Airey (1978-1981) Passed away on 25 October 2012 aged 48. Ian was Head Librarian and a Prefect in his last year at Mount Albert Grammar School.

Mount Albert Grammar School Foundation The vision of the Foundation is to provide resources for MAGS to become New Zealand’s school of choice. The Foundation supports the fulfilment of the School’s vision, values and tradition. The Foundation has evolved from the Old Boys 50th Jubilee Trust and has provided assistance by way of grants and scholarships over the past 40 years. Nevertheless MAGS is underfunded compared to its peers and our goal is to expand the capital base of the Foundation so that we can make more significant contributions to the School.
