Due to the increasing demand for its services Sexual Trauma and Recovery Services (STARS Dorset) is to extend and open a new centre in West Dorset. The charity currently has its main offices in Poole and the new centre will mean its services will be more accessible to clients in the west of the county.
STARS Dorset is a free service for anyone of any age or gender who lives, works or studies in Dorset and has experienced any form of sexual violence at any time in their life. The charity offers four core services: a one to one Counselling service, a Helpline, an Independent Sexual Violence Advisor Service and a service specifically for Children and Young People. Helen Stevens, STARS Service Manager said “The need for the work STARS Dorset does is continually growing, last year we helped over 1000 people in the county. Although we currently work with clients in West Dorset having a dedicated centre in the area will mean our services will become more accessible to the local community which is vital.” Martyn Underhill, Dorset Police and Crime Commissioner added ‘“The dedicated staff and volunteers at STARS Dorset provide incredible emotional and practical support to people who have been through some of the worst experiences possible. While it is incredibly sad that their services are so badly needed, I am proud to see STARS arrive in rural Dorset. This
extra footprint of services will make them more accessible and increase reporting as well as support outside of the conurbation.”
Anyone who has been affected by sexual violence and would like confidential advice and support can call the STARS Helpline on 01202 308855 or visit www.starsdorset.org.
Local companies work together for Poole care home
Bourne View is Colten Care’s new flagship luxury nursing home based on the grounds of the former Dorset Fire Service headquarters in Poole. It is part of an independent family-run company Colten Care which operates 21 care homes across the South of England.
As the work on the new care home started, principal designer and contractor Colten Developments employed local consultants Mabey Francis as Mechanical & Electrical designers and contract administrators. Watertite Heating were appointed as mechanical contractors who procured all mechanical items including the boilers and water heaters which were supplied by Poole-based manufacturer Hamworthy Heating. Choosing heating and hot water plant Mabey Francis specified Hamworthy Varmax boilers, Dorchester DR-FC Evo direct fired condensing water heaters and pressurisation equipment.
The two chosen Varmax 180 condensing boilers are highly efficient and come with a 5-year warranty on the heat exchanger. They deliver a combined output of up to 382kW which they can adjust to actual lower heat requirements when needed to save energy consumption.
Andy Cope, director for Mabey Francis, commented,“We decided to specify Hamworthy boilers, because we have been designing the

Two Dorchester DR-FC Evo water heaters deliver a combined continuous output of 1,940 l/h to satisfy the hot water needs of the care home. As they have a built-in burner, they do not rely on an external heat source such as a boiler. Andy elaborated, “We chose separate direct fired water heaters because they allow the heating boilers to directly compensate for heating with no compromise to efficiency upon hot water demand. The Dorchester DR-FC Evo model was selected for its condensing technology, making it more efficient, and proven reliability continuing the long line of Dorchester water heaters we have specified over the years.” Working together Mike Dennett, projects director for Watertite Heating who installed the plant, commented,
“The support I receive from Hamworthy’s area sales manager is always excellent. Data sheets and brochures are also easy to download from their website, making forward planning easier. Lastly, delivery dates were agreed in advance and adhered to.”
Andy Cope, director for Mabey Francis, said, “As a practice, we have been specifying Hamworthy products for over 40 years. They are based locally to our offices and have provided us with excellent technical support and after-sales service.”
Steven Pinder, site manager for Colten Developments, added,
“We at Coltens are pleased as a local business ourselves to be using another local company who have proved more than capable of providing an excellent product with an excellent service.
This installation joins the other 20 nursing/ residential homes all of a similar size in the Colten group that have been completed using Hamworthy products. The whole installation has gone smoothly without problems and we’re very happy with the result.” www.hamworthy-heating.com
